Hannah Pezzack is a writer, editor, and curator. Drawing on sonic knowledge, ecology, and the politics of intimacy, she regards language and sound as deeply intertwined sensory and embodied mediums. She is currently a junior curator at Sonic Acts – an art, theory, and technology biennial – and is the assistant editor of Ecoes, a bi-annual magazine about ‘art in the age of pollution', published by Sonic Acts Press. A lot of her work has been about relational ontologies – thinking about human and non-human exchanges and how we might be able to challenge the hierarchies and binaries between them. ➡️ PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/DecodingGeopolitics This is a conversation with Minna Alander - a research fellow at the Finnish Institute for International Affairs who's focusing, among other topics on Finnish security and defence policy, Nordic defence cooperation and Arctic security. Finland is quite an exception among European countries - because while today many are panicking and trying to make up for years of underfunding, Fins seems to be quite calm - as they have been ready to fight Russia on their own for decades - as they have done in the past in multiple iconic conflicts. In this conversation we talk about why is Finland prepared for war better than almost anyone else, what is the Finnish perspective of the Russian threat, how did Finland joining NATO completely changed the calculus for both NATO and Russia and what would a Russian invasion fo Finland look like. Thank you to everyone who is supporting this podcast on Patreon - it's incredibly helpful. And now, enjoy the conversation.

What can other parts of the world learn from Ukraine, as it pioneers bringing acts of ecocide into the discussion of justice in the context of war?Ukraine is not only having to confront the destruction of human life and infrastructure caused by Russia's invasion but also having to deal with damage to the environment. The question of the environment is closely linked to that of justice. Ukraine is a pioneer in bringing the acts of ecocide into the discussion of justice in the context of war. The lessons of Ukraine are thus of vital importance to those parts of the world that suffer from environmental damage in the context of armed conflicts, climate breakdown, and other crises. An expert panel gathers at the RSA to foster public discussion and continued cooperation between organisations and individuals for an ongoing environmentally focused conversation about the consequences of Russia's war in Ukraine, situated in the context of wider environmental challenges faced globally. This event is held in partnership with the Ukrainian Institute London, the Delegation of Flanders (Embassy of Belgium) in the UK and Ireland, Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland, the Cyprus High Commission and EUNIC London (European Union National Institutes for Culture). The event is made possible thanks to the financial support of the Culture of Solidarity Fund powered by the European Cultural Foundation.#RSAUILBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/ueembDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thersaorg/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/theRSAorgLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theRSAorg/Listen to RSA Events podcasts: https://bit.ly/35EyQYUJoin our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join

What happens if the geoeconomic risks of great power rivalry materialise? What can be done to prevent these potential dangers from unfolding in small open economies, such as Finland and Sweden? More specifically, how can small state preparedness be enhanced to tackle the risks of foreign ownership, supply disruptions and high tech dependencies? How on earth can comic art be utilised to study these topics? How can Europe react to Donald Trump's threats to NATO? There is a realistic scenario that the populist Republican can win the US presidential elections in November. What would it mean to NATO when Trump suggested that he would encourage Moscow to attack allies that are, as he said this, not paying bills? Boris Nadezhdin's surname has its root in the Russian word for “hope,” and he's inspired just that in tens of thousands of voters as the politician with an antiwar message who's come the furthest in the country's byzantine bureaucracy for presidential candidacy. Nadezhdin's campaign says it's collected roughly 200,000 signatures, which is twice what it technically needs for the Central Election Commission to add his name to the ballot in March. While the commission's approval remains unlikely, the Nadezhdin campaign has been a major news event for antiwar Russians, especially in the ever-growing diaspora, where thousands of people have lined up in cities across Europe and the Caucasus to offer their signatures. Nadezhdhin's allies have no illusions about his prospects, but showing their support for an antiwar challenger to Vladimir Putin has quickly become the opposition's first visible civic movement in some time. To understand how this happened, who Nadezhdin is as a politician, and how opposition politics has worked throughout Russia's Putin era, The Naked Pravda welcomes back Dr. Маrgarita Zavadskaya, a senior research fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. *** No country can be free without independent media. Yevgeny Prigozhin is now (in)famous around the world for mounting a failed mutiny against the Russian military in a last-ditch attempt to avoid being absorbed into it, as the Kremlin reclaims its monopoly on violence and ends an experiment with outsourcing bits of the Ukraine invasion to mercenaries. The Naked Pravda has focused numerous times before on Wagner Group, and it's now time to write the private military company's obituary. Or is it? How did Prigozhin manage to convince his men to embark on this misadventure? What did we learn about the Russian political elite in this crisis? And what should we expect in Belarus, where at least some remnant of Wagner Group is said to be headed? For insights into the failed insurrection and its aftermath, Meduza turns to three experts. Since Finland joined NATO in April, many defense analysts have begun referring to the Baltic Sea as "NATO Lake." What might be the long-term effects of NATO's gradual encirclement of this strategic region? Giselle, Dalibor, and Iulia are joined by Minna Alander, research fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, to discuss the security landscape of the Nordic region since Finland's NATO membership and its implications for the Baltic and Arctic regions. Alander also reviews Germany's national security strategy, particularly the success and shortcomings of its defense policy over a year into German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's "Zeitenwende" address.Show Notes: Sign up for the Eastern Front's biweekly newsletter here. On the podcast this week we look at the UK's role in the defence of the Nordic region. Since the annexation of Crimea, the UK has taken a keen interest in the Nordic and Baltic regions, with the formation of the Joint Expeditionary Force. With Kyiv's counter-offensive now underway, we look at how Europe's security is being reshaped by events in Ukraine, what London and the JEF states are looking to achieve by operating more closely in the north, and the balance of forces between NATO and Russia in the Baltic now Finland is a NATO member. Also, this week, we look ahead to the NATO summit in Vilnius next month. With Finland now an alliance member, but Sweden still outside, are alliance politics (with Turkey and Hungary) leaving NATO's northern flank vulnerable. What role are key alliance members like France and the UK playing ahead of Vilnius, and in the face of intense fighting in the east, what kind of plan might the alliance offer Ukraine? Joining Roxanne Escobales on the show this week are Olivia O'Sullivan, Director of our UK in the World program, Alice Billon-Galland, a Research Fellow with Chatham House's Europe program and from Helsinki Matti Pesu, a Researcher with the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. In this podcast, an experienced conference and webinar moderator is joined by two doctors in the field of paediatric infectious diseases: David Greenberg and Maria Hemming-Harlo. In this podcast, our guest experts provide information and their perspectives on the following topics: The disease burden of rotavirus The related morbidity and mortality of rotavirus How rotavirus is transmitted The clinical picture of rotavirus infection The evidence supporting routine vaccination with RotaTeq (Rotavirus Vaccine, Live, Oral, Pentavalent) This podcast was funded by Merck Sharp & Dohme LLC. Below please find the reference list for Vax Voices, Podcast 1: The Global Burden of Rotavirus Disease and Evidence Supporting Routine Vaccination With RotaTeq to ensure listeners can further explore the content discussed. View the product information and indication for RotaTeq here. View the Select Safety Information from MSD below. Select Safety Information RotaTeq should not be administered to infants with a demonstrated history of hypersensitivity to the vaccine or any component of the vaccine. Infants with a history of intussusception or who have congenital malformation of the gastrointestinal tract that could predispose infants to intussusception should not receive RotaTeq. Infants with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease or SCID should not receive RotaTeq. Administration of RotaTeq should be postponed in infants suffering from acute severe febrile illness. The presence of a minor infection is not a contraindication for immunisation. The administration of RotaTeq should be postponed in subjects suffering from acute diarrhoea or vomiting. No safety or efficacy data are available from clinical trials regarding the administration of RotaTeq to infants who are potentially immunocompromised. Cases of gastroenteritis associated with vaccine virus have been reported post marketing in infants with severe combined immunodeficiency. Vaccine virus transmission from vaccine recipient to nonvaccinated contacts has been reported. Caution is advised when considering whether to administer RotaTeq to individuals with immunodeficient contacts. In post-marketing experience, intussusception (including death) and Kawasaki disease have been reported in infants who have received RotaTeq. As a precaution, healthcare professionals should follow-up on any symptoms indicative of intussusception (severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bloody stools, abdominal bloating and/or high fever) since data from observational studies indicate an increased risk of intussusception, mostly within 7 days after rotavirus vaccination. Parents/guardians should be advised to promptly report such symptoms to their healthcare provider. The level of protection provided by RotaTeq is based on the completion of all 3 doses. As with any vaccine, vaccination with RotaTeq may not result in complete protection in all recipients. HQ-ROT-00133 | 02/23 Podcast References: 1.Nelson R. COVID-19 disrupts vaccine delivery. Finland is in NATO. This week, the ratification was made complete, and the country joined the North Atlantic alliance. To talk through how it got there, Lawfare Publisher David Priess sat down with two research fellows at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs in Helsinki: Henri Vanhanen, who has also served as a foreign policy advisor to the National Coalition Party, which recently won the most seats in the Finnish parliament and is in the process of forming a government, and Minna Ålander, a research fellow who, like Henri, has recently written for Lawfare and has been on the podcast previously to talk about Finnish security issues. They talked about the long road to get to NATO membership for Finland, what Finland brings to NATO, and what NATO brings to Finland.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. This week on the podcast we look at the latest developments relating to Sweden and Finland's accession to NATO. This week the Hungarian parliament finally ratified Finland's membership to the alliance, two weeks after President Erdogan in Turkey gave his seal of approval following a meeting with the Finnish president. Sweden however remains trapped in limbo, with both Turkey and Hungary delaying Stockholm's membership and Erdogan in particular asking for more concessions. We discuss why Turkey and Hungary took issue with Sweden and Finland, what the strategic situation in the Baltic looks like now with only Finland in NATO, and the challenges facing Sweden amid fraught ties with President Erdogan? We also look ahead to Turkey's presidential election in May. Recent opinion polls point to a neck-and-neck race with some polls even showing President Erdogan falling behind the opposition. Turkish voters cast their votes on 14 May, so we discuss what the sentiment is like in Turkey ahead of the election, and how will the world respond to a potential change of power in Ankara for the first time in 20 years? Late last month, there was a sudden and brief explosion of news reports in Russia and Ukraine about an ascendant youth movement of violence supposedly built around the subculture of anime fans. According to vague stories in the media, fistfights were breaking out at shopping malls and other public places as part of a transnational campaign by something called “PMC Ryodan.” After a large fight in St. Petersburg led to dozens of arrests of Ryodan and anti-Ryodan youths, a federal lawmaker in the State Duma even appealed publicly to Russia's Interior Ministry, demanding a ban on all content associated with “PMC Ryodan.” There was mass police action in Ukraine, too, where officials called PMC Ryodan an instrument of “Russian propagandists” leading an “informational-psychological operation” to “destabilize the internal situation in Ukraine.” It turns out that the hysteria surrounding this youth subculture almost completely misunderstood the sporadic violence. Semantically, the first thing to grasp is that “PMC,” or private military company, is used facetiously when describing the Ryodan group. Members of this anime fan community are actually more likely to be the targets — not the instigators — of the brawls breaking out at youth hangouts. In fact, it seems the group got its “PMC” nickname after its followers started fighting back against the jocks who like to bully them. The PMC Ryodan scare was especially perplexing abroad, where casual observers typically view Russian youth culture through the lens of a pro-Kremlin/anti-Kremlin dichotomy. But most young people in Russia, just like most people anywhere, don't live and breathe polemics at every moment of the day with every fiber of their being. So, what can we say about Russia's youth culture beyond the familiar Kremlin-based divide? The Naked Pravda asked two scholars for answers. Will Finland and Sweden join NATO? Since Russia launched its unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine in late February, European political and security dynamics have changed in profound ways. For Finland and Sweden, the invasion has ignited a new round of debate around the question of NATO membership, causing both countries to reexamine their longstanding policy of remaining outside the transatlantic military alliance. Despite this movement, no political decision has yet been made in either country, and obstacles may remain in the way of membership. Nevertheless, it appears that a seismic shift in foreign and security policy could be on the horizon for both countries. Anna Wieslander and Mika Aaltola join Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Jim Townsend to discuss what we might expect to see going forward. Anna Wieslander serves as director for Northern Europe at the Atlantic Council. In addition to her role at the Atlantic Council, she chairs the Institute for Security and Development Policy in Stockholm and serves as secretary general of the Swedish Defense Association. Mika Aaltola is the Director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. He is also a tenured professor of International Relations and European Union Affairs at Tallinn University in Estonia and holds the rank of docent at Tampere University.
