Reflect Forward
How Business Leaders Can Help Fix Our Broken Political and Economic Systems w/ Prof. Rawi Abdelal

Reflect Forward

Rawi Abdelal is a Herbert F. Johnson Professor of International Management at the Harvard School of Business. He's also the director of HBS's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, faculty co-chair of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, and the faculty chair of the HBS/YPO President's program, which is where I met him. During his 20 years on the HBS faculty, Professor Abdelal has served in many leadership roles and has twice earned the Greenhill award for service to the Harvard Business School. Professor Abdelal is an expert on globalization, geopolitics, and political economy. Widely published, he has written about the global financial system, international politics, the influence of multinational firms on world politics, and the transformation of energy markets. He is currently at work on two projects. One project, The Fragile State of the World, explores the interrelated challenges that undermined the first era of globalization and that threaten to destroy the current age of global capitalism. The second project, The Profits of Power, explores the geopolitics of energy in Europe and Eurasia. Episode in a Tweet: As global political and economic systems break down, business leaders can step up and help fix the problems that plague us by focusing on income inequality, creating dignity at work, and looking at education differently. Quick Background: I met Rawi when I attended the HBS/YPO president's program a few years ago, and I was struck by his speaking style, intellect, and knowledge of geopolitical systems. I love politics, some might say I am a bit of a politics junkie, so his lectures resonated with me. In December 2020, I invited Rawi to join me for a YPO fireside chat about the outcome and ramifications of the Joe Biden presidency. It was a fascinating conversation, and afterward, I asked him if he would come on Reflect Forward and he agreed. In this episode, Rawi and I talk about the state of global politics, why we have seen populist movements, and why politicians are unable to stimulate change. We also talk about how business leaders can make an impact by doing something about income equality, creating inclusive workplaces where people keep their dignity, and revamping our views on education by promoting trade school and alternatives to college degrees. Rawi also gives us insight into himself, sharing stories of deep shyness and how he has overcome his fear of public speaking. This is an in-depth and insightful interview and I feel fortunate to have spent this hour picking Rawi's brain and getting to know him better. You can find Rawi on LinkedIn or on the HBS website. Question of the Episode: Are you on Clubhouse yet? My Answer: I am signed up, but I haven't used it much; I plan to put on a Clubhouse event sometime this summer. Curious about Clubhouse? It is a social networking app that allows people to gather in chat rooms to discuss various topics. You can't see each other; it's just an audio platform where a moderator oversees the discussions and interviews.

Most people who chase their dreams don’t aspire to build a company. We all know that an endeavor of that magnitude takes a huge commitment of your time and energy. Making a career out of your passion is a rare achievement that few are fortunate enough to do. Today’s guest shares a candid behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and successes in her journey to entrepreneurship.  Lisa Pongrass is the founder and CEO of Canvas & Hyde, a luxury handbag company based in Brooklyn, New York. An acclaimed interior designer and fashion stylist in her Australian homeland, Lisa has over twenty years’ experience that has propelled her to the forefront of fashion and beauty on the international stage. In 2006, Lisa was named one of Harper’s Bazaar’s 100 Best-Dressed Australians, recognized for her classic style, an element that has been the mainstay of her direction and inspiration for Canvas & Hyde. With the rise of digitally trend-driven “it” bags of the moment dominating the fashion world, Lisa sought to create her own line of “anti-it bags” through Canvas & Hyde. With an intrinsic love of design and fashion, she focused on creating a brand that emphasized quality craftsmanship and a minimal urban aesthetic. Although Lisa was at the forefront of the fashion industry in Australia, she immersed herself in a new challenge--an intense education of the intricacies of the manufacturing process. To assure luxurious quality control, Lisa delved into researching and learning the craft of luxury handbag construction for over a year. Determined to source the finest quality and sustainable materials in partnership with environmentally responsible factories, Lisa collaborated with factories in Italy and the US. With her strong vision and meticulous research, Canvas & Hyde was born.  A lifelong love for fashion How many people get to turn their passion into a company and career? For Lisa, her nerdy and obsessive love for fashion was never what she thought her career would involve. After working in interior design for about ten years, she made the shift into the connected field of designing handbags. It was important to her to start her own business and give birth to a meaningful brand, which she calls a “dream come true.” Launching out held a certain degree of uncertainty because there were so many things she didn’t know about the business. Lisa says, “As a solo entrepreneur, I feel like I have one pizza and ten children to feed.”  TWEET: “As a solo entrepreneur, I feel like I have one pizza and ten children to feed.” @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams Handling the rough patches How do you handle life’s rough patches? Lisa says that challenges come up constantly when you run your own business. Being kind to yourself is essential. Lisa rewards herself with a nice hot bath to relax at the end of the day. She realizes that what she’s doing isn’t a matter of life and death, like the challenges many people around the world are facing each day. Another important aspect in handling challenges is not to take yourself too seriously. Lisa likes to take a “big picture” view in being grateful for the opportunities. TWEET: “Being kind to yourself is essential.” @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams Balancing work and life Don’t we hear a lot about “work-life balance”? Is there really such a thing? As a single mom for four years, Lisa found it difficult to juggle the demands of motherhood with building a brand, and she gave up sleep at times to make it work. As an empty-nester now, Lisa finds the balance even more difficult because she’s on her own to create the balance. Sticking to a schedule to eat and sleep well is harder to do. It’s rewarding to achieve each milestone of success, whether a large or small one because you know you’ve done it for yourself. Lisa says that success is the greatest high in the world and is what propels her to get up the next day.  TWEET: “Success is the greatest high in the world.” @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:10] Young Lisa and her dreams [3:35] An avenue of uncertainty [6:42] What Lisa would have done differently [8:49] How she knew it was time to hire more people [10:07] What surprised Lisa on her journey [13:40] What networking is all about [14:46] Handling challenges as they come [17:45] Balancing work and life [22:32] Goals vs. journey [25:48] When you’re struggling to pivot [27:33] It’s never too late [30:11] Get to know Lisa better RESOURCES MENTIONED Lisa on Facebook Lisa on Twitter Lisa on Instagram Lisa on LinkedIn Lisa’s Website   TWEETS YOU CAN USE: It surprises me every day how much people want me to succeed. @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams Knowing one’s weakness is a strength. @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams At the time I considered launching my business, I thought, “How difficult can it be?” @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams It’s important to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. @canvasandhyde #chasingdreams

Some people would let a clinical depression diagnosis stop them in their tracks, but not my guest for today’s show. He battled through the darkness and took steps to get himself in a good place on the path to achieving his dreams. He is now living his best life in CA with an exciting and highly-coveted job at one of America’s most innovative tech companies.  Sebastian Kurian is a Corporate Counsel at Google supporting its Energy and Location Strategy Team. He focuses primarily on energy infrastructure and supply transactions globally, including maintaining Google's 100% renewable energy goal and pursuing its ambitious, new 24/7 carbon-free goal.  At Google, Sebastian has closed renewable energy deals across four continents.  Sebastian also handles data center site selection and other utility infrastructure and supply matters. Before joining Google, Sebastian was a Corporate Counsel at Amazon, where he was the lead global utilities lawyer for Amazon Web Services. During his time at Amazon, he closed or advised on many renewable energy deals. He is also the former Assistant General Counsel of Clark Construction, one of the oldest and largest building and civil construction firms in the United States.  Sebastian began his legal career as a commercial real estate and finance associate at Miles & Stockbridge. A native of Baltimore, MD, Sebastian received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania with honors (2004) and his JD from the University of Maryland with honors (2008).  Why Sebastian pursued a law degree What is the best way to arrive at a career choice? Most people would advise you to focus on your strengths and interests and chose a career that aligns with those. Sebastian knew that the dental and medical fields popular with many young Indian students would not be a good fit for him. In short, he didn’t like math, and he wasn’t very good at it. What he did like, however, was political science and business, so he thought a law degree would be a versatile beginning point that would utilize his strengths. Since he didn’t know any other lawyers in his family or community, he went into the career blindly, not knowing what he was choosing. As a lawyer, Sebastian felt like he was on call 24/7 and never had any time off from the long hours and demanding schedule.  TWEET: “As a lawyer, Sebastian felt like he was on call 24/7.” @skurian8  #chasingdreams Sebastian’s battle with depression If you’ve ever battled depression, then you know there can be a stigma attached; this is especially true for Indians, where a depression diagnosis brings a certain amount of shame and dishonor. Many Indians won’t seek professional help for depression symptoms, precisely for this reason. Sebastian had to build up the courage to see a doctor, accept his diagnosis, and confront his problems. Things had spiraled downward so badly that he had even seriously contemplated suicide to the point of planning out how he would take his life. Sebastian had never dreamed that depression would affect him, but he found himself going through treatment that consisted of therapy and antidepressants. Now, he’s living proof that you can fight through the darkness and come out on the other side to move forward and achieve your wildest dreams. TWEET: “Sebastian had to build up the courage to see a doctor, accept his diagnosis, and confront his problems.” @skurian8  #chasingdreams At a crossroads How many times do random encounters put us in the perfect place we need to be? This happened to Sebastian as he struggled in an unhappy place back in 2012. He was miserable in his job, and his career had gone backward. He was stepping back from a relationship, his job, and life in general. Sebastian says he was extremely close to quitting his job and joining the Air Force, and he had even contemplated moving to Africa. It was a random incident that moved him across the country and landed him his dream job at Google. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “It’s OK to quit and walk away from something. Sometimes quitting and moving on is the best answer.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:37] Blazing the trail for Indian lawyers [5:47] Why Sebastian chose a law career at first [9:00] The law profession and its long hours [13:07] The move from East Coast to West Coast [18:44] A diagnosis of depression [25:15] Cultural stigmas of depression [27:00] Feeling supported [29:45] People with happy faces on the outside [30:38] What Sebastian was thinking [36:55] What therapy is like on the front end [43:29] Where Sebastian is headed next [47:10] ONE action for a dream chaser [48:52] Get to know Sebastian better RESOURCES MENTIONED: Sebastian on Instagram Sebastian on Linkedin Sebastian on Rising Stars 2019 Watch the episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cZAj9xRriyw TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: When you have nothing to lose, it’s a lot easier to take a risk. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: For Indians, a depression diagnosis brings shame and dishonor. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: I don’t have a Cinderella story about why I went to law school, but for me, it worked out, and I’m happy where I am today. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: The West Coast life is more laid back and less pretentious than life on the East Coast. @skurian8  #chasingdreams

With the prevalence of blended families today, being a stepparent is rarely thought of in a positive light. The truth is that it doesn’t have to be that way. Hold your skepticism until you hear what today’s guest has to say about blended families thriving and creating an atmosphere of love and mutual respect.  Tuniscia Okeke is the author of Empowered Stepmother. In this book, she invites stepmothers on a transformational journey of self-empowerment to regain their voices and discover their identity in a blended family dynamic. The family vlog “Tea with Tuniscia O” gives a candid look inside the love and connection shared between Tuniscia and her stepson, Ike. The vlog journals their family’s victories and strategies to co-parent successfully with Ike’s biological mother. Tuniscia is an avid reader whose most creative thoughts occur while she’s in “couch potato mode.” As a wife and mother of three children, two of whom are adults, Tuniscia’s most cherished moments are family time together at home or on vacation.  Tuniscia’s path Were you a stepchild? Tuniscia was---and then she became a teenage mother at age 18, and then again at age 19. As the mother of two little ones, life hit her hard and fast, and she had to grow up quickly. She became a paralegal for a while and then bought her first house at age 24, an achievement that was unusual in her family. Even though Tuniscia had to be a working mom, she always had a job that was near her children. Looking back today, Tuniscia realizes that her leadership qualities were unique for one so young, and others saw that in her also. TWEET: Too many times, stepmothers want to battle with the biological mother to see who’s more important. @blendingourlove #chasingdreams Becoming a stepmother Does anyone ever aspire to be a stepparent? The answer is probably a NO for most of us. Tuniscia never wanted this role, until she met her future husband, who happened to be the father of an 18-month-old son. It didn't take long for Tuniscia to fall in love with the father AND son, knowing that she wanted to be a positive influence in little Ike's life. Surprisingly, the foreword to Tuniscia's book is written by none other than Danielle, Ike's biological mother. She outlines how Tuniscia has helped her with the struggles to love and accept herself to be a better mom. Today, Tuniscia is Danielle's life coach, helping her rebuild and reinforce her beautiful bond with her son. The book came about as the guide Tuniscia wished she'd had when she went through the darkest days of her struggle in the role of stepmother.  TWEET: I am not his biological mom, but I don’t use the word “step.” I’m here to help. @blendingourlove #chasingdreams Being free to love Have you thought about how a child feels when stepparents don't get along? Tuniscia's stepson, Ike, recently told her his wish that all stepchildren everywhere could be free to love their families as they want. He knows what it's like to feel like a caged animal, unable to love all the people in your life as you wish. Parents don't realize how this dilemma can stifle a child. Tuniscia's message is that blended families can thrive and find common ground. TWEET: I knew there was something special that other people saw in me.  @blendingourlove #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Follow your gut. Know your WHY--it’s the only thing that will propel you.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:30] How Tuniscia and I met at a local networking event [3:30] Tuniscia’s positive personality after many years of pretending [3:40] Tuniscia's path to responsibility and leadership [10:08] Making choices based on the hand you’re dealt [11:06] Becoming a stepmother [13:05] The Foreword of Tuniscia’s book  [17:12] A positive spin on blended families [23:10] Why people find themselves in places where they can’t chase their dreams [28:32] The narrative around blended families [30:07] The ripple effect [32:03] Why Tuniscia invited Ike’s biological mom to join them on vacation [35:05] What it means to be an empowered stepmother [37:05] ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED: Empowered Stepmother by Tuniscia Okeke Tuniscia on Facebook Tuniscia on Twitter Tuniscia on Instagram  Tuniscia on LinkedIn  Tuniscia’s Website   TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: Celebrate your small victories. @blendingourlove #chasingdreams TWEET: Being a stepmom makes you vulnerable because you’re not expected to succeed. @blendingourlove #chasingdreams TWEET: As a teenage mother, life was served to me quite quickly. @blendingourlove #chasingdreams

Are you the kind of person who always knew you wanted to help people, make a difference, and be an influencer? Most of the time, these characteristics are evident even in young children, and that’s certainly true for today’s guest. She’s helping others in numerous ways as she chases her dreams and watches out for the dream killers along the way. Rana Campbell is a fellow Chief Dream Chaser. She is the founder, host, and Chief Dream Driver of the Dreams in Drive podcast. She’s a storyteller at heart and loves helping others figure out how to shine and put their goals into action. Her work has been featured in Elle, The Jimmy Fallon Show, Huffington Post, MadamNoire, xoNecole, Fox 5, and more. Rana is a proud graduate of Princeton University and an Emma Bowen Foundation media program alum. Dreams that shaped a life Have you always had dreams of inspiring and influencing others? Young Rana always loved reading others’ stories, being the person with the ideas, and making sure other people believed in themselves. As she grew up, she saw stories and the potential for stories everywhere. In high school, she was drawn to dance and playwriting, and she continued that dance focus in college. It was there, in a communications and marketing internship, that she realized how much she loved talking to people. Pretty fitting for a future podcast host, huh? TWEET: Self-work is the best work. @rainshineluv #chasingdreams Fear of success? Most people fear failure, but have you ever feared success? Rana shares how she questioned success and said, “If I make it, will I want it?” That kind of fear can still hold us back. Rana never wanted to be famous, but it’s been a back and forth struggle in how she views success. She says, “I want to be Oprah, but I don’t want to be Oprah.” Through it all, the driving force behind the fear and the self-work is the overriding desire to help people. TWEET: Know if you’re doubting yourself, you’re not alone. Everyone’s journey is filled with those moments. @rainshineluv #chasingdreams Watch out for dream killers! Do you live YOUR life? There is so much more to life than we can touch. We limit ourselves most often because we allow others to define what we SHOULD be doing. Rana learned the lesson to define her own life and create her own rules. Her advice is to be cautious about the advice you receive from others, because sometimes their advice is based on their own fears. These people are dream killers. A lot of us aren’t moving forward because other people are telling us we shouldn’t.  TWEET: As a kid, I loved making sure other people believed in themselves. @rainshineluv #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”You need to be real with yourself about what your dream is. RJ Hodges is a professional speaker, certified personal mastery life coach, certified practitioner in the healing art of Reiki, and the creator of a coaching system known as L.I.F.E (Living in Full Existence) Education. He is a bestselling co-author of the book, Mission Unstoppable partnering with world-renowned leaders George Fraser and Les Brown. RJ is also the author of You Can’t Practice At The Game, The Art of Mastering You Volume One, and an audio book series called Winner Status. RJ is the founder and president of empowerment companies BORN II WIN and RJ Hodges Speaks, LLC. TWEET: Figuring Out What You Want and What to Do Next, with RJ Hodges on this episode It was a business opportunity that opened him up to helping other people. RJ Hodges was not your typical 19 year old kid. He stepped out of highschool and immediately got busy working in a network marketing business. His dream was not necessarily to build a huge multi-level business - but simply to build something out of his life. It was that business opportunity that opened him up to the idea that his real job was to help people and he soon discovered that there are thousands of ways to do that. On this episode you’re going to hear the path RJ chose and how it’s led him to some amazing opportunities. “I was born a giant and somewhere along the line became less than I was.” One of the powerful things RJ Hodges teaches his coaching clients and those he speaks to is that every one of us is born a giant with great things to do in the world. But somewhere along the way we get taught that we are less than that, that we can’t do certain things, that we are less capable than we really are. And we believe it. RJ loves to see the lights go on for people who begin to believe again in the giant within. His goal is to help people be free of those kinds of limiting beliefs and on this episode Aimee and RJ chat far and wide around that subject to help you unpack and think through what might be limiting you. TWEET: I was born a giant and somewhere along the line became less than I was ~ RJ Hodges You need to think of the concept of “target audience” differently. On this episode of Chasing Dreams Aimee and RJ begin talking about the idea of a “target audience” as entrepreneurs. Neither of them really care for the term because it feels limiting. But RJ has come to see that the target audience really has more to do with who HE is rather than who is ideal clients are. He’s finding that when people resonate with him they tend to be aligned perfectly with what he’s got to offer. So instead of focusing on a target audience, he focuses on being a better version of himself, with no apologies. You can hear more about this new way of thinking of a “target audience” on this episode. Magic happens when you become the thing you want to be. When RJ Hodges talks about “becoming the thing you want to be,” he means becoming focused on it deep within. He believes that the more you get focused on what you want and begin to remove the things that are not in alignment with who you want to be, you begin to resonate with those things and become that person. That’s when you stop chasing your dreams and your dreams begin chasing you. You can hear the inspirational way RJ communicates these concepts on this episode, so be sure you take the time to listen. TWEET: Magic happens when you become the thing you want to be ~ RJ Hodges OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [0:48] Aimee’s introduction to her guest today, RJ Hodges. [2:13] What is Reiki and why RJ uses it as a tool in his coaching practice. [3:34] How RJ started in network marketing at age 18 and moved into the entrepreneurial world. [6:11] The tension between stability and dream chasing and the direction RJ went. [9:51] The common struggles people have when pursuing their dreams. [15:10] The garbage we learn growing up that makes us less than we are. [19:30] RJ’s perception of what a “target audience” should really mean. [24:09] Why chasing your dreams is never over and why you should never quit. [30:15] How can a person discover which beliefs are limiting them and which are serving them? [34:04] Why information is key and how to use it to your advantage. [38:01] How RJ uses affirmations (not in the kooky way). Or click here to listen to today’s episode in iTunes, or click here to listen to it on my website. One of the most common concerns that many of my clients have is that they aren’t ready yet, or that they’re not good enough yet to become visible in their desired marketplace. They are afraid to show up because they’re not perfect yet and their ducks aren’t all lined up - maybe they’re not the perfect weight, or don’t have the most gorgeous website up.They’ve learned all they can, got a ton of training and certifications, and researched a LOT. This can lead to overwhelm, and the best cure for overwhelm is... action! But for whatever reason, they can’t motivate themselves enough to move forward and take real action!Often in this case, the deeper underlying fear is not a fear of perfection, or “not enough training”.It’s a deep fear of not being unique enough, and of not having something of enough value to offer in the marketplace. The fear-based ego says, "There are way too many insert your desired profession here, and I will just be cluttering up the marketplace even further. I don’t want to do that. What will people think?"“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world...” - Marianne WilliamsonWe tell ourselves, there are people more experienced, more knowledgable, and prettier than we are, who are already doing what we want to do.The truth is, my loves, there is no one like you. One of my mentors, Marie Forleo, says that “the world needs that special something that only you have.”Your Tribe Needs to Hear From YOUBy playing small and not showing up and shining your light, the way you were BORN to do (as a side note, the Universe plants your desires into your head!), you will be doing a HUGE disservice to not only yourself, but to those who need your service or product from YOU the most.Yes, it’s true - there's a lot of the same information out there. It’s not all about the information - no one is really recreating the wheel here, and that’s not even a requirement to be successful. I myself was inspired to write this post by things I’ve learned from Marianne Williamson, Marie Forleo, Tony Robbins, Mike Dooley… the list goes on.The Secret Ingredient to Success in Business is YOUIt's ALL about the packaging. Ready for the secret ingredient to success in business as a lightworker? Your personality is the packaging!Your unique perspective on the world has NEVER been seen and WILL NEVER BE SEEN AGAIN in the Universe. No one sees the world like you do. There is only one you.And there are people out there waiting to hear from you.A lot of this is about taking yourself out of the equation for a second.I’m going to use my own coaching business as an example...I used to think that there were so many business coaches out there, that they all looked the same and were doing the same thing, and that I didn’t stand a chance at standing out. I didn’t see my uniqueness as an asset back then. Fast forward to today. On a coaching session this morning, I had a client tell me that she’s been looking for a business coach for a long time, but never found someone who resonates with her until she came across me.Win-win!This same story can easily be true for you, too.Click to Tweet: As a lightworker, it is your divine responsibility to find and serve your tribe.Think about it: doing otherwise due to fear & ego-based thoughts would be selfish. If you can identify, find and serve YOUR tribe, just by being you... you are providing so much value.Your tribe might have even heard the SAME exact things before, but they might need to hear it from you - from your perspective, your life background, your intonation. What's beautiful is that with time, you'll develop your voice and gain confidence as you continue to put yourself out there. And you'll attract people who love you, and repel those who don’t jive with your energy. It’s sort of like jogging - it’s tough and clunky at first, unnatural even, but with time and repetition, it becomes easy and you start to see results.Ready to Put This Into Practice? So if you’re like OK, Mona Lisa, I already know this intellectually, but I don’t FEEL IT. I get it, I’m very feelings-based, too! If that's the case, I have some homework for you.Prove it to yourself. Find ONE person in the world who would love to hear about your product or service (or even a theory that you love!) from you in particular. And once you do - officially congratulate yourself for joining the game!Once you find one person, you'll know that there are more out there. So find one person to provide your service to - even if it's free if you’re just starting out (the value you'll get is the KNOWING). If you already have clients, do a survey to your existing clients - ask why they decided to work with you, what were the key determining factors. I guarantee you'll see similarities, and you'll see your own personality as a big contributor. You literally never know what people need to hear - don't judge it based on your own frame. People are in different places and you could be the one to tell them something that will change their life. They might NEED to hear it from you.Did anything surprise you about today's Podcast? We are in week three of this 5-part series on the creative process! Yay! If you haven't yet listened to parts one and two, go ahead and do that first so this all makes more sense. Today's Mini Moved Me is all about how we can REFRAME our work. In other words, are we open to seeing our work in a different way? Exploring the possibilities? Stretching the approaches? Often, the tools in our tool belt - i.e., all the research we are continuously doing - makes it possible to see our work in a different light. Creating something "new" is really about seeing the old in new ways, and making it your own. [Tweet "As #speakers - reframing is important if we are to bring new insight to old ideas (and they're all old ideas). "]     Some ideas from Andy in terms of how we can "reframe" as we're creating something new: -What Works Matrix by Jack Welch - identifying people, companies, organizations that are doing it well (not exactly like you - but something you aspire to) -Expect and plan on trying and failing. There is so much to learn as we try and find the new! -If we want to be able to reframe we need to literally step away, retreat, slow down and NOT think about what we're focused on. Our brain makes connections in the unconscious - so sleep, quiet, reflection - even zoning out in the shower - are essential to the creative process. Tune in for next week's continuation of this conversation - focusing on the "AHA Moment" - what Andy calls REALIZE!
