If you only listen to one of my podcasts, please pick this one. Why? Because guest Sam Clark, CEO of Clark Construction in Lansing Michigan, candidly shares his organization's six year diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and results in an authentic and meaningful way. Would you like for your organization to have a 99% engagement score? Or to grow from $200 million to $500 million in three years? Understanding "dominant culture" and learning how to build an inclusive organization has women and minorities beating down their doors and has significantly contributed to these business results. As Sam states, this isn't "white male bashing". It's understanding the barriers to success that people outside of the dominant culture face, addressing these barriers through inclusivity, and unleashing the tremendous innovation of diverse organizations.

Having built a successful career in private equity—including 13 years with formidable Carlyle Group—Sameer Bhargava was probably not the most likely candidate to fill a CFO position at Clark Construction Group of Bethesda, Maryland. The two businesses belonged to strikingly different worlds. Whereas Carlyle populated its world with leading-edge investment vehicles and innovative global assets, Clark has left its mark with signature skyscrapers and civic projects that are credited with transforming public spaces in a big way. Still, both Washington, DC, area–headquartered businesses share what arguably remains industry’s greatest hiring determinant: a common geography. Clark Construction’s resume is filled with “hometown” projects of stature, including The Wharf—a pedestrian-oriented DC waterfront community—and the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. “In every block that you drive by, Clark is building something incredibly impressive,” remarks Bhargava, who quickly emphasizes Clark’s national footprint by mentioning other Clark credits, including San Francisco’s Salesforce Tower and San Antonio’s Frost Tower. While Bhargava’s enthusiasm for Clark’s work is evident, he makes it clear that his move to Clark was driven by more than geography and the firm’s A-list menu of cityscape projects. “In medicine and other industries, you get better and smarter the more specialized you become, but in business it’s quite the opposite,” says Bhargava, who encourages others to “take the risk to be uncomfortable” and “do things differently.” –Jack Sweeney

Some people would let a clinical depression diagnosis stop them in their tracks, but not my guest for today’s show. He battled through the darkness and took steps to get himself in a good place on the path to achieving his dreams. He is now living his best life in CA with an exciting and highly-coveted job at one of America’s most innovative tech companies.  Sebastian Kurian is a Corporate Counsel at Google supporting its Energy and Location Strategy Team. He focuses primarily on energy infrastructure and supply transactions globally, including maintaining Google's 100% renewable energy goal and pursuing its ambitious, new 24/7 carbon-free goal.  At Google, Sebastian has closed renewable energy deals across four continents.  Sebastian also handles data center site selection and other utility infrastructure and supply matters. Before joining Google, Sebastian was a Corporate Counsel at Amazon, where he was the lead global utilities lawyer for Amazon Web Services. During his time at Amazon, he closed or advised on many renewable energy deals. He is also the former Assistant General Counsel of Clark Construction, one of the oldest and largest building and civil construction firms in the United States.  Sebastian began his legal career as a commercial real estate and finance associate at Miles & Stockbridge. A native of Baltimore, MD, Sebastian received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania with honors (2004) and his JD from the University of Maryland with honors (2008).  Why Sebastian pursued a law degree What is the best way to arrive at a career choice? Most people would advise you to focus on your strengths and interests and chose a career that aligns with those. Sebastian knew that the dental and medical fields popular with many young Indian students would not be a good fit for him. In short, he didn’t like math, and he wasn’t very good at it. What he did like, however, was political science and business, so he thought a law degree would be a versatile beginning point that would utilize his strengths. Since he didn’t know any other lawyers in his family or community, he went into the career blindly, not knowing what he was choosing. As a lawyer, Sebastian felt like he was on call 24/7 and never had any time off from the long hours and demanding schedule.  TWEET: “As a lawyer, Sebastian felt like he was on call 24/7.” @skurian8  #chasingdreams Sebastian’s battle with depression If you’ve ever battled depression, then you know there can be a stigma attached; this is especially true for Indians, where a depression diagnosis brings a certain amount of shame and dishonor. Many Indians won’t seek professional help for depression symptoms, precisely for this reason. Sebastian had to build up the courage to see a doctor, accept his diagnosis, and confront his problems. Things had spiraled downward so badly that he had even seriously contemplated suicide to the point of planning out how he would take his life. Sebastian had never dreamed that depression would affect him, but he found himself going through treatment that consisted of therapy and antidepressants. Now, he’s living proof that you can fight through the darkness and come out on the other side to move forward and achieve your wildest dreams. TWEET: “Sebastian had to build up the courage to see a doctor, accept his diagnosis, and confront his problems.” @skurian8  #chasingdreams At a crossroads How many times do random encounters put us in the perfect place we need to be? This happened to Sebastian as he struggled in an unhappy place back in 2012. He was miserable in his job, and his career had gone backward. He was stepping back from a relationship, his job, and life in general. Sebastian says he was extremely close to quitting his job and joining the Air Force, and he had even contemplated moving to Africa. It was a random incident that moved him across the country and landed him his dream job at Google. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “It’s OK to quit and walk away from something. Sometimes quitting and moving on is the best answer.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:37] Blazing the trail for Indian lawyers [5:47] Why Sebastian chose a law career at first [9:00] The law profession and its long hours [13:07] The move from East Coast to West Coast [18:44] A diagnosis of depression [25:15] Cultural stigmas of depression [27:00] Feeling supported [29:45] People with happy faces on the outside [30:38] What Sebastian was thinking [36:55] What therapy is like on the front end [43:29] Where Sebastian is headed next [47:10] ONE action for a dream chaser [48:52] Get to know Sebastian better RESOURCES MENTIONED: Sebastian on Instagram Sebastian on Linkedin Sebastian on Rising Stars 2019 Watch the episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cZAj9xRriyw TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: When you have nothing to lose, it’s a lot easier to take a risk. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: For Indians, a depression diagnosis brings shame and dishonor. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: I don’t have a Cinderella story about why I went to law school, but for me, it worked out, and I’m happy where I am today. @skurian8  #chasingdreams TWEET: The West Coast life is more laid back and less pretentious than life on the East Coast. @skurian8  #chasingdreams

3 Important Lessons from Lou Palandrani: Become adept at the art of listening. Do not neglect the importance of balancing professional and personal responsibilities. Have fun with your projects and teams! On this episode of the Construction Dream Team Podcast, host Sue Dyer welcomes Lou Palandrani, Senior Vice President of Clark Construction Group headquartered in Maryland. Lou has been with Clark Construction for 34 years and has been in the construction industry for 38 years. He has worked on $5 billion worth of award-winning projects in his career. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a civil engineering degree, and now he is Lead Certified and holds a California Contractors License. The following show notes are a transcription from the audio interview available at constructiondreamteam.com and everywhere podcasts are hosted (iTunes, Stitcher, etc.). If you like this podcast, please leave us a 5-star review! :) Lou’s Career Journey As mentioned previously, Lou graduated from the University of Delaware with a civil engineering degree. After that, he worked for a large engineering firm but quickly realized that sitting at a desk and doing calculations was not what he had in mind for a career, so he wanted to look into different opportunities. Luckily, his boss at the time saw a lot of Lou’s strengths and personality, especially Lou’s communication skills. He asked Lou what he thought about handling the design and construction ends and Lou was interested. Lou then went to a more construction-oriented company and shifted his focus to Construction Management. Lou mentioned how it helped to have someone that had an interest in his career early on. Again, his boss at that time saw his strengths and personality and focused him towards a focus where he was dealing with larger teams and where he was on the field. The construction industry is very people-oriented, so it is important to have people skills as well as technical knowledge. Lou thinks it is essential for experienced managers to take an interest in newer employees because it helps maintain the strength of the teams. Lou started with Clark Construction in Philadelphia, and 5 years in the company decided to expand and open an office in California. Lou thought he was going to stay on the East coast, but has been on the West coast in California for almost 30 years. Favorite Career Moment Lou’s favorite and most valuable moment in his career was when the company afforded him an opportunity to work on a job in Colorado with a high-end architect. He saw it as an opportunity and decided to try it. He found it was pretty different from Philadelphia. He was then afforded another opportunity to move to California for a project and again it had been very valuable for him. It gave him the opportunity to grow, see different things, learn, understand different methods of construction delivery, and it has enhanced his career and life. West Coast Vs. East Coast Project Approaches Lou had noticed some differences with how projects are delivered between the 2 coasts. He says that on the West Coast he had noticed a more collaborative type effort and a focus on developing a team. Back East, Lou says they seem to protect their boundaries a little bit more. Changes In The Industry Lou has noticed how the expertise of the subcontracting community has gotten better. They are now experts and are vital to bringing in ideas and vision to projects. On the other hand, Lou has seen technology limit some of the coordination and thought processes of some of their designers. The other thing that has changed is it is very hard to get young people interested in the trade, and he has seen a thinning of the construction trade field.  Lessons Lou Has Learned Lou shared with listeners that the one lesson he has learned that he wishes he could share across all projects is to be a better listener. Lou says he has become a better listener by gaining experience, biting his tongue more often, and mellowing out over the years. Biggest Career Challenge Lou believes that balancing your work life with your personal life can be very challenging. You need to have a successful personal life to support a successful work life. Lou remembers for a long time, work was his focus. He remembers one instance where he had a father-daughter dance that he was supposed to go to, but he got involved in a meeting that went on longer than expected and he was cutting it close to when he needed to leave. He realized he wasn’t going to be home on time, and his daughter was very upset. He then had a bit of an epiphany and realized that he needed to do a better job respecting his family and personal life as he does with his work life. Lou also says with technology, it does give us a little more flexibility to balance the work and personal life. Clark Construction Lou shares that the company he works for started as a family owned business and was originally called the George Hyman Construction Company. There are many Clark Construction offices located throughout the country, with a total of 4,500 employees nationally, and they bring experience, creativity, and teamwork to the projects they are involved in. Best Advice The best advice Lou ever received was, “It doesn’t matter if a job is $1 mil or $100 mil, there are 100 things to do and you are expected to do them 100% right.” So no matter how big or small a job is, always be on your game and do your best. Be ahead of the curve and keep your eye on the goal from start to finish. Parting Advice It is important to have some fun when delivering a job. You need to enjoy your job and like what you do. Enjoy being able to see the fruits of your labor. Resources for Listeners Managing By Influence (book). It teaches you that you manage and influence people by what you do, and what you don’t do, which Lou keeps in mind daily. Saving Priceless History! From cracks in the US Capitol Dome, to the dirt of Idaho, to the empty shelves of the Iraq Museum, experts protect the artifacts of our society. These artifacts are an important element of maintaining the lessons of who we are, of remembering what came before, and of having an appreciation of what we can accomplish. Encompassing historical archaeology, restoration, and even investigating the theft of priceless artifacts, it turns out these efforts have beginnings and endings, outputs and outcomes, teams, plans, risks, and budgets – they are projects. In this episode, we discuss three very different CRM projects: the restoration of the most iconic building in the United States (the Capitol Dome), the identification of a lost town in Idaho, and the memorable recovery during the Iraq conflict of some of the most important cultural artifacts of antiquity. We see the efforts of these professionals, Christine Merton, Bob Weaver and Colonel Matthew Bogdanos through a PM Point of View, and take some lessons that we can use in all of our projects. Brett Earnest is on the Board of Directors for Bicycles Against Poverty (as well as other non-profits) and is also the General Manager of Clark Construction in Seattle, WA.  While he certainly has a busy day job, he doesn’t lost site of trying to make a difference in whatever way he can.  Why does Bicycles Against Poverty matter to you? I could have a lot of personal fulfillment and impact.  At the time I had no idea the impact that this organization would have.  And I wanted to have first hand impact. How does the structure work: $ 100.00 busy a new bicycle.  Individuals in the villages have the opportunity to finance the bicycle to build credit, and then have the ability to start a business and become self-sustaining entrepreneurs. What has surprised you the most about the work you are doing: The reality that one bicycle really can change someone’s life.  From literally saving a child’s life, to starting a business and getting out of poverty.  This is not only life changing, but is having the ability to change an entire village. How has this work changed you personally: Humility and reflecting back on the things I take for granted.  Regardless of how bad a day is, I am reminded that people have far less and yet are still vary happy and loving.  So who am I to be upset being frustrated by the little things that come up in life.  My travels to these countries, doing this type of work, are a great reminder of that. How can people find organizations to get involved with: Church Organizations and the Chamber of Commerce are a good start.  But, I would encourage people to start the conversation with the people they know about what they are doing or what organizations they are involved with.  Further, once you are involved with an organization, you will find that those folks are involved with multiple organizations.  Just start the conversation. Best advice: It’s never too late.  We should always be thinking about how we can improve the lives of those around us.   What you believe to be to true: Never look at yourself and say that you could have done more… you always have the opportunity to do more now.   And the other is to never take what you have for granted.  There are others, who would benefit greatly from your time, or any amount of money you may have to spare.  You can make a difference today.   How to find out more about Bicycles Against Poverty and donate or support in  any way: http://www.bicyclesagainstpoverty.ort (www.bicyclesagainstpoverty.org  )   Thanks for Listening!
