IMMERSION: The Elements of AlUla: Arabia's Lost City and the Power of Water

Before the modern city of Alula rose to prominence, its natural springs and water systems were at the heart of its existence. For centuries, Alula's oasis has been a critical stop on the Incense Road, connecting cultures and trading routes across the Arabian Peninsula. Water, both from the sky and the earth, has sustained life here, and its management has shaped both the landscape and the people. In this episode, we step back in time and explore the ancient wells, oases, and water systems that have supported Alula for millennia. We'll see how the inhabitants of this region once relied on camels and complex water systems to survive in the desert, and witness a reenactment that celebrates the founding of the ancient city of Tayma. Along the way, we'll discover how Alula's connection to water continues to influence its art, culture, and life today. Recorded on location in immersive surround sound, this episode transports you directly to the heart of Alula, where history, nature, and culture come together in perfect harmony. Join Noor Hindi and special guests for a celebration of her new book DEAR GOD. DEAR BONES. DEAR YELLOW. What is political poetry and linguistic activism? What does it mean to bear witness through writing? When language proves insufficient, how do we find and articulate a pathway forward? DEAR GOD. DEAR BONES. DEAR YELLOW. interrogates, subverts, and expands these questions through poems that are formally and lyrically complex, dynamic, and innovative. With rich intertextuality and an unwavering eye, Noor Hindi explores and interrogates colonialism, religion, patriarchy, and the complex intersections of her identity. Mahboba Rawi was Born in Afghanistan and forced to flee as a teenager due to her activism against the Soviet occupation. She then lived in a refugee camp in Pakistan for two years before marrying and moving to Australia. After her son's death in 1992, she decided to take action to protect and advocate for children in Afghanistan. And founded Mahboba's Promise. An Australian non-profit organisation dedicated to helping disadvantaged women and children in Afghanistan. A country that has been torn apart by years of war and civil unrest and who now live under Taliban rule. Mahboba's Promise has established schools, shelters and health clinics across Afghanistan and provided numerous sponsorships to widows, orphans and girls in need. She has helped thousands and thousands of people and to many of them she is ‘Mother Mahboba' … Mahboba has been awarded an Order of Australia and in 2012 was Australian Muslim Woman of the Year. Her story is worthy of making a film… or three. Mahboba is an angel… up there with Mother Teresa for the work she does, it's simply incredible... In the world she operates, and the comparatively small size of her organisation it's difficult to comprehend the impact she has had on the many many lives in Afghanistan and around the world. Born in Beirut, he lived in Lebanon through the civil war in the 1970s and then immigrated to Canada in 1992. His work has been translated into more than thirty languages, and you might know him for acclaimed novels such as De Niro's Game, Cockroach, and Beirut Hellfire Society. Hage recently released his first collection of short stories, Stray Dogs. In the May issue of The Walrus, we featured the story “The Wave.” Hage recently sat down with Jessica Johnson, the editor-in-chief at The Walrus, to talk about his latest book, being a political writer, and identity. In this episode:Rawi Hage talks about writing short stories and finding inspiration in photography. Hage then discusses writing about marginalized people. He also describes becoming disillusioned with traditional photography—or at least of his place in it.Hage talks about the local aesthetics of photography and the intersections between photography and the written word. Finally, Hage talks about why he needs distance from his work and the nature of human beings to move between victim and victimizer.Links:Hear more about JS Rutger's story about housing inequality: thewalrus.ca/podcasts-the-deep-dive-s1e2/Read an excerpt from Rawi Hage's new short story collection: thewalrus.ca/the-wave/thewalrus.ca/im-not-your-kind-of-muslim/thewalrus.ca/ok-ok-blue-jays/spoon-tamago.com/2022/04/13/koenji-writing-cafe/Credits:Thanks for joining us on this week's episode of The Deep Dive. Reflect Forward
How Business Leaders Can Help Fix Our Broken Political and Economic Systems w/ Prof. Rawi Abdelal

Reflect Forward

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2021 50:56

Rawi Abdelal is a Herbert F. Johnson Professor of International Management at the Harvard School of Business. He's also the director of HBS's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, faculty co-chair of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, and the faculty chair of the HBS/YPO President's program, which is where I met him. During his 20 years on the HBS faculty, Professor Abdelal has served in many leadership roles and has twice earned the Greenhill award for service to the Harvard Business School. Professor Abdelal is an expert on globalization, geopolitics, and political economy. Widely published, he has written about the global financial system, international politics, the influence of multinational firms on world politics, and the transformation of energy markets. He is currently at work on two projects. One project, The Fragile State of the World, explores the interrelated challenges that undermined the first era of globalization and that threaten to destroy the current age of global capitalism. The second project, The Profits of Power, explores the geopolitics of energy in Europe and Eurasia. Episode in a Tweet: As global political and economic systems break down, business leaders can step up and help fix the problems that plague us by focusing on income inequality, creating dignity at work, and looking at education differently. Quick Background: I met Rawi when I attended the HBS/YPO president's program a few years ago, and I was struck by his speaking style, intellect, and knowledge of geopolitical systems. I love politics, some might say I am a bit of a politics junkie, so his lectures resonated with me. In December 2020, I invited Rawi to join me for a YPO fireside chat about the outcome and ramifications of the Joe Biden presidency. It was a fascinating conversation, and afterward, I asked him if he would come on Reflect Forward and he agreed. In this episode, Rawi and I talk about the state of global politics, why we have seen populist movements, and why politicians are unable to stimulate change. We also talk about how business leaders can make an impact by doing something about income equality, creating inclusive workplaces where people keep their dignity, and revamping our views on education by promoting trade school and alternatives to college degrees. Rawi also gives us insight into himself, sharing stories of deep shyness and how he has overcome his fear of public speaking. This is an in-depth and insightful interview and I feel fortunate to have spent this hour picking Rawi's brain and getting to know him better. You can find Rawi on LinkedIn or on the HBS website. Question of the Episode: Are you on Clubhouse yet? My Answer: I am signed up, but I haven't used it much; I plan to put on a Clubhouse event sometime this summer. Curious about Clubhouse? It is a social networking app that allows people to gather in chat rooms to discuss various topics. You can't see each other; it's just an audio platform where a moderator oversees the discussions and interviews.

bes is the nom de guerre of a poetperformer, transdisciplinary researcher, conscientious creator and advocate for civil and human rights. Currently Washington, D.C.based, bes began collaborating with Art Is Dead (A.I.D.), an Istanbul-rooted “art and non-art formation” while living in Turkey in her early-mid twenties. Her poetry attempts to scrape the borderlands of memoir, activism, and antropoesía (Resato 2013), verse with an ethnographic sensibility. Arab American poetry and the Beat movement are important strands of influence in her thematic and stylistic tendencies. Involvements in choral and vocal performance, theatre and competitive creative writing and public speaking from an early age inform her poetic praxis today. Migrants: Cynthia Masiyiwa and Mahboba Rawi

Mahboba Rawi was a teenager when the Soviet-Afghan War broke out. She led protests against Soviet control in her high school. After she was nearly arrested, she decided to flee the country. Along with millions of others, Mahboba made the ten day walk to the border with Pakistan, not knowing whether she would ever see the relatives she was leaving behind again. Eventually, she married an Afghan-Australian man and settled with him in Australia. Life took another tragic turn when her son drowned in an accident. His death moved her to set up her own charity, Mahboba's Promise which supports impoverished children and widows in Afghanistan. Cynthia Masiyiwa left Zimbabwe ten years ago when the country was in political and economic crisis. Worried for her future, her parents sent her to live with her sister in the UK. Cynthia thought the UK would be a "land of opportunities", but she quickly experienced several setbacks. She disliked the cold climate, the "frosty" behaviour of Londoners - and then her mother died. As the only black student in her class, Cynthia was shocked to experience racism; in fact she jokes that running from bullies helped her become a 'champion sprinter'. Later she gained the confidence to challenge the prejudices of her peers and eventually her classmates became her allies. Now she works for Citizens UK helping other young migrants to navigate the immigration system and even persuading the government to improve it. (Photo: Cynthia Masiyiwa. Rawi Hage was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and lived through nine years of that country's civil war. He immigrated to Canada in 1992. He is a writer, a visual artist, and a curator whose debut novel, De Niro's Game (2006), was shortlisted for the 2006 Scotiabank Giller Prize and the 2006 Governor General's Award for English fiction. He lives in Montreal where I caught up with him at the Blue Met International Literary Festival.
