Send us a textSeth Berkley, MD has been at the front lines of the world's biggest battles against infectious disease. As the longtime CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the cofounder of COVAX, and the founder of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, Berkley has helped bring lifesaving vaccines to billions of people. In his new book, FAIR DOSES: An Insider's Story of the Pandemic and the Global Fight for Vaccine Equity, Berkley lays out the hard truths of what went wrong during COVID—and how we can do better next time. From the rise of vaccine nationalism and political roadblocks to the explosion of misinformation, Berkley explains why inequitable vaccine access cost millions of lives and weakened global stability. On this episode of FUTUREPROOF., we discuss:Why the next pandemic is not a question of if, but whenWhat COVID-19 revealed about the politics of global healthHow vaccine nationalism and misinformation threaten our collective safetyLessons from COVAX and how to design faster, fairer systems in the futureWhy global cooperation isn't just moral—it's economic and existentialThis is a candid conversation about science, trust, and survival in a world that will inevitably face future pandemics.
“The amount of chaos that's been introduced into the federal health policy landscape is unprecedented,” says Michelle Mello, professor at Stanford Law School and the Stanford University School of Medicine. That turmoil, she explains, has left major gaps in expertise, trust, and leadership—and states are rushing to fill the void. In this episode of Stanford Legal, host Pamela S. Karlan talks with Mello about what this moment means for the future of science, public health, research, and the law.Mello describes how the hollowing out of career expertise at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has upended vaccine policy and research funding, forcing states into unfamiliar leadership roles. She and Karlan also unpack how shifting scientific guidance during the pandemic eroded public confidence, how politicized grant-making is reshaping the research ecosystem, and state governments' growing role in creating what she calls a “shadow CDC.”Despite the turmoil, Mello points to a few bright spots: state-level experimentation could generate valuable evidence of what works and what does not, and there are reassuring signs from the lower courts, she says, which she believes are capable of separating law from politics.Earlier this year, Mello explored many of these themes in her JAMA Health Forum paper, “The Hard Road Ahead for State Public Health Departments.”Links:Michelle Mello >>> Stanford Law pageJAMA Health Forum paper >>> “The Hard Road Ahead for State Public Health DepartmentsConnect:Episode Transcripts >>> Stanford Legal Podcast WebsiteStanford Legal Podcast >>> LinkedIn PageRich Ford >>> Twitter/XPam Karlan >>> Stanford Law School PageDiego Zambrano >>> Stanford Law School PageStanford Law School >>> Twitter/XStanford Lawyer Magazine >>> Twitter/X (00:00:00) Health Policy and COVID-19 Vaccines(00:05:10) The Vaccine Rollout Challenges(00:10:25) Public Trust and Recommendations(00:16:40) The Role of the Vaccine Committee(00:23:55) NIH Grant Process Insight(00:29:43) MIT's Stance on NIH Compact Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Listen to the recent CSIS Bipartisan Alliance for Global Health Security book launch of Fair Doses: An Insider's Story of the Pandemic and the Global Fight for Vaccine Equity by Seth Berkley. As the gravity and magnitude of the Covid-19 pandemic became apparent in the first half of 2020, how did the vision for a mechanism to ensure equitable access to new vaccines come together and what role did organizations including Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; the Center for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI); and the World Health Organization (WHO) play in enabling the COVAX Facility to distribute nearly two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to people in 146 countries, the majority of which were low-income countries, by the end of 2022? This event featured conversation between Katherine Bliss, Senior Fellow and Director of Immunizations and Health Systems Resilience, CSIS Global Health Policy Center, and Dr. Seth Berkley, author of Fair Doses and CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, from 2011 to 2023 regarding the challenges of vaccine equity and the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic that can inform preparations for inevitable future health crises. This event is made possible through the generous support of the Gates Foundation.
In this episode, Jess and Sarah welcome Dr. Seth Berkley, a leading public health expert, to examine pressing global health security challenges. In this episode Ben Plumley catches up with Dr. Seth Berkley, founder of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, former CEO of GAVI and amongst other responsibilities, now a senior advisor at Brown University's School of Public Health's Pandemic Center. Seth has recently published a new book “Fair Doses: An Insider's Story of the Pandemic and the Global Fight for Vaccine Equity” and he and Ben discuss the book's topics of vaccine equity, misinformation, and the rapid innovations in vaccine development, particularly the success and future potential of mRNA vaccines. Dr. Berkley highlights the challenges posed by misinformation and the political landscape, as well as the importance of global collaboration in addressing pandemics. They also explore his defining role in Covax's efforts to distribute COVID vaccines, the need for local manufacturing, and the impacts of nationalistic policies on global health. Dr. Berkley stresses the critical role of ongoing innovation and funding in preparing for future health crises and ensuring equitable access to health technologies. And he pulls no punches on the current US administration's failures in supporting global health research and partnerships. https://www.ucpress.edu/books/fair-doses/hardcover 00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction 01:05 Current State of Misinformation and Disinformation 03:56 Challenges in Public Health Communication 09:19 Reflections on COVID-19 and Vaccine Equity 12:44 Global Health and Future Pandemics 16:41 Vaccine Nationalism and Local Manufacturing 23:38 Preparedness for Future Health Threats 31:01 The Future of Clinical Research and Innovation 36:03 Seth Berkeley's Current Work and Future Plans 38:13 Conclusion and Closing Remarks Join the Conversation!
