The shock of a global pandemic exposed so many flaws in our current system. With that in mind, what kind of preparation and leadership do we need for the next global disaster? Dr. Seth Berkley, the CEO at Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, joins us to shed light on the topic. He co-founded and led the organization to accelerate vaccine access to the poorest of the poor worldwide. Dr. Seth also co-created COVAX, the global emergency response and the only multilateral solution to COVID-19. In this episode, he chats with host Anne Pratt to discuss the initiatives they've spearheaded from the start and what they're currently doing to keep up and prepare for what's next. People want the virus to be over, but the virus might have different plans. It's essential to have leaders with the foresight and commitment to long-term solutions and efforts to ready us for whatever comes. Listen in to learn more about the current state of vaccinations worldwide and why we need to continue on this path to maintain global health and safety.Love the show? In episode #124, the second episode of our Live From Munich mini-series, Steve is joined by Seth Berkely, CEO of Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, “the largest purchaser of vaccines in the world”. He speaks on strengthening health security: “Do we prepare for our hopeful future? Or do we prepare for reality?” “The right thing to do is to continue to prepare for worsening variants, worsening disease. And the best way to do that is to make sure high-risk people all over the world are as protected as they can be.” We are only as safe as our neighbors. Longterm, "it hurts the world if new variants appear, get the chance to circulate, and then jump out again, as we've seen.” Different vaccines have different advantages for various levels of infrastructure, and “we want to get countries to a place where they can say we have the right vaccine, in the right place, at the right time to meet the needs of our population.” “We're fools if we don't keep in mind that we have to protect everyone in the world.” Seth Berkely is the CEO of GAVI, The Vaccine Alliance.

With the rapid spread of Omicron and CDC guidelines changing on a near-daily basis, the pandemic can feel more confusing than ever. To help make sense of it all, we bring you this week's episode two days ahead of schedule. Even in the face of a highly infectious variant, COVID vaccines still offer the best protection from severe illness and death, but 40% of the world's population, mostly in low income countries, have yet to receive a first dose. With so many people unvaccinated, new variants will continue to emerge. So, what can be done to break vaccine gridlock and bring this pandemic to an end? On this week's episode, Dr. Luciano Cesar Azevado, an ICU doctor in São Paulo, explains how Brazil went from being a COVID hotspot to a world leader in vaccinations. Then, Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, talks with Ray Suarez about overcoming the challenges of vaccine distribution in hard to reach areas. Guests: Dr. Luciano Cesar Azevado, ICU physician and professor of critical care and emergency medicine, Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO, GAVI, The Vaccine Alliance Hosts: Philip Yun, CEO, World Affairs Ray Suarez, co-host, World Affairs
In this episode, an edited version of a live event on November 15, Katherine talks with Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, about the first year and a half of COVAX, the global collaboration focused on ensuring globally equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines. One year after the first vaccines were made available, their distribution remains highly unequal, with an overwhelming majority of doses so far delivered to populations in high-income countries. Even as vaccine production has expanded, inequities have worsened, especially among lower-income countries. What difficult lessons have been learned over COVAX's first year and a half? How likely is it that populations in lower-income countries will have access to Covid-19 vaccines in 2022? And how can countries that have surplus vaccines best support COVAX and the distribution of vaccines globally?

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez discusses the Biden Administration’s efforts to address concerns - like a lack of running water - in Native American nations. And Sister Norma Pimentel, who group, Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley receives migrants after they’re released from the custody if the U,S Customs and Border Security.
Maybe we shouldn't be surprised that a vast gulf is opening up between Covid vaccination rates in the richest countries and the poorest. But still the numbers are shocking. While the UK has given 27% of its population a first dose, many nations have yet to inject a single arm. Hardtalk speaks to Dr Seth Berkley, head of Gavi, the Global Vaccine Alliance and key driver of the effort to ensure the whole world gets Covid protection. It is a great ambition; is it achievable?

For our first episode of Pandemic Planet, we are joined by Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. For the past two decades, Gavi has mobilized its network of government, private sector, and civil society partners to make vaccines affordable and available to millions of children in the world's lowest-income countries. Nearly a year into the pandemic, how has Gavi pivoted to respond to the challenge of the novel coronavirus? How has it worked with new partners to stand up global mechanisms like COVAX? And as we prepare for the largest rollout of vaccines in history, what lessons can Gavi offer the world on the importance of equitable immunization to global security and recovery? Hosted by Katherine E. Bliss. Produced by Julia Kim.

Over the past twenty years, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has proven to be a high-impact and resilient global health partnership. Launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2000, Gavi has mobilized its network of government, private sector, and civil society partners to make vaccines affordable and available to millions of children in the world’s lowest-income countries. Yet after years of improvements, immunization coverage has now stagnated in some countries, and the challenges posed by demographic change, urbanization, and conflict all threaten to slow global progress. Gavi’s new strategy for 2021-2025 lays out a plan to confront these challenges and reach the most vulnerable children with vaccines, and the organization will seek funding to help it reach its goals at a pledging conference to be hosted by the United Kingdom in June of 2020. The United States has supported Gavi since 2000, and the Alliance’s contributions to health security and efforts to enable countries to move towards sustainable, self-financed immunization programs resonate with U.S. global health and development goals. On Monday, February 24, from 2:30 to 4:00pm, the CSIS Global Health Policy Center will host a public event focusing on challenges and opportunities for advancing Gavi's work in this new 2021-2025 phase. Following introductory remarks by CSIS Senior Vice President and Global Health Policy Center Director J. Stephen Morrison, Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, will deliver a keynote presentation on Gavi’s plans for replenishment and beyond. He will then be joined by Irene Koek, Acting Assistant Administrator for the Global Health Bureau at USAID; Robin Nandy, Principal Advisor & Chief of Immunizations at UNICEF; and Katherine Bliss, Senior Fellow with the CSIS Global Health Policy Center, for a panel discussion examining the role of U.S. support for Gavi as the organization enters its third decade. In April 2019, a youth-led panel with representatives from youth and student organizations and global health leaders took place at our house in Stockholm. Before the panel, we hade the opportunity to sit down with Peter Sands (Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria) and Dr Seth Berkley (CEO of Gavi the Vaccine Alliance) to discuss their respective work and personal engagement in global health. It became an interesting dialogue spanning over sustainable development goals, barriers to gain impact to achieve the 2030 agenda, the role of stakeholder engagement and reigniting global solidarity. We hope you enjoy it! The panel Securing long and healthy lives for generations to come – a youth-led conversation was co-organized by the student organization network of the Swedish Institute for Global Health Transformation and the student and junior doctor section of the Swedish Society of Medicine.
