74: Dr. Scott Antoine: Why PANS and PANDAS are leading hidden causes of mental illness in children

The MindHealth360 Show

In this vital and technically complex presentation, Dr Scott Antoine explains why PANS (Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptoccocal Infection) are common and overlooked root cause of psychiatric symptoms in children (such as OCD, restrictive eating, anxiety, emotional distress, depression, dramatic mood swings, psychosis and suicidal ideation). In doing so, he encourages physicians to explore mental health in an entirely new way, especially in the treatment of children.    Dr Scott Antoine completed his undergraduate training at the University of Scranton, after which he completed his doctorate at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He later served in active duty with the United States Army as an Emergency Physician and worked as an Emergency Physician at St. Francis Hospital until 2019. In addition to his board certification in Emergency Medicine, he achieved board certification in Integrative Medicine and holds certifications in Functional Medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) and A4M. His book The Comprehensive Physicians Guide to the Management of PANS and PANDAS was released in February 2024 to excellent reviews.    He discovered his calling when he and his wife Ellen, also a Functional and Integrative Medicine physician, battled to correctly diagnose the root-cause of their 12 year old daughter's sudden-onset OCD, insomnia, rage, as PANS. Since then, he has helped hundreds of children recover from PANS and PANDAS, and in 2019 helped to pass a law which prohibits insurance companies in Indiana from denying coverage for medical care (including IVIG) for children with PANS and PANDAS.   In this richly informative personable interview, he presents an evidence-based outline of the successful ways to both diagnose and treat PANS and PANDAS, and stresses that they are not nearly as rare as mainstream medicine seems to believe. He decodes complex medical expertise, referencing over 300 clinical studies and peer-reviewed medical literature, that identify biological mechanisms and the root causes that underlie PANS and PANDAS. In this episode, Dr Antoine unravels why PANS/PANDAS can have such a profound, often sudden impact on Children's psychiatric health, and demands that PANS and PANDAS be considered more broadly in psychiatric diagnoses. In this episode you will learn how infections, toxins and the immune system interplay in the expression of harmful psychiatric symptoms, why they cause PANS and PANDAS, and how they can be successfully treated.   In this episode learn about: Why PANS and PANDAS are hidden and common root cause of OCD, violent mood swings, depression, anxiety and suicidality, how they are diagnosed, and the role of testing. Why physicians routinely overlook and even deny PANS and PANDAS as a cause of mental health symptoms. Why toxins and infections can trigger PANS and PANDAS and their associated neuropsychiatric symptoms. How Strep is related to autoimmunity and why to treat it even if strep tests are negative.   Why a range of infections - not just strep or Lyme borrelia - can trigger neuropsychiatric symptoms (OCD, attention issues, hallucinations, psychosis, depression, suicidal ideation), including other tick-borne co-infections, influenza, Epstein Barr, chlamydia pneumonia and Covid. Ways environmental chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides and mycotoxins (mould) can lead to inflammation and autoimmunity. The concrete link between rheumatic fever and OCD, ADHD, mood issues and psychosis. Other causes of autoimmunity, including genetics, intestinal permeability, infection/T-cell activation and molecular mimicry  (the mechanism by which microbes can induce autoimmunity). The 4 vital components of treatment: 1) find and treat infections 2) find and remove toxins 3) re-regulate the immune system 4) break neurological loops (OCD, anxiety). How to treat infections using prolonged use of antibiotics, and which antibiotics to choose. Why herbs (isatis, baicalensis, cat's claw etc) can reduce the duration of antibiotic use, and the studies that prove it. The binders (activated charcoal, zeolites, humic acid) and bitters that help remove toxins. Ways medications (naltrexone and steroids) can help re-regulate the immune system. Why and when IVIG is used for the treatment, why it can relieve and cure symptoms (OCD, anxiety and tics) quickly. How Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) and hypnosis outperforms medications in breaking neurological loops (OCD, anxiety, intrusive thoughts) Other helpful interventions that assist healing; nutrients, diet changes and probiotics.

In this episode, I have an enlightening conversation with artist Carla Falb, who shares her unique journey through art, spirituality, and personal growth. We explore the profound influence her father's role as a Methodist minister had on her early understanding of mysticism and creativity, and how these experiences shaped her artistic vision.-----------------------------Since 2002, Carla Falb has been creating paintings of roller coasters from images she captures on her GoPro while riding in the front car. Facing the initial fear and the adrenaline rush of the ride is infused into her work – like a 21st century J.M.W. Turner tied to the mast of a ship witnessing a storm at sea. To the casual viewer, her series depicts mere amusements, yet her underlying intention is that the roller coasters symbolize our experience in this life, with all its peaks and valleys. After the death of her mother on Christmas in 2016, her emphasis shifted to nighttime imagery with light bursting through the darkness. For Falb, the light in her paintings represents our divine sparks or higher selves, connected to one another in a universal field of consciousness. Carla Falb was raised in Philadelphia and spent her summers at the Jersey Shore.  She was very close to her father, a Methodist minister, who shared his interest in mysticism with her, as well as his quirky sense of humor, love of art, music, dancing, and amusement parks! Falb received a B.F.A. from the Philadelphia College of Art and a Certificate in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1983.  During that time, after learning traditional drawing and painting techniques, she created paintings based on imagery from her dreams and visions. Twenty years later, Falb returned to Philadelphia and attended the University of the Arts for her M.F.A. where she began painting roller coaster structures.  In addition to her painting practice, Falb has taught art full time since 1987. She received a Dodge Foundation Fellowship for Artists/Educators that funded her travel to Southern California in 2009 to record source imagery for her Roller Coaster Series.  During her visit, Falb fell in love with the area, and relocated to Orange County in 2017 where she is currently a tenured professor at Fullerton College.  Exhibition highlights include solo exhibits at the Billis Williams Gallery in Los Angeles, where she is represented, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' Alumni Gallery. Her work was also featured in exhibits at the Preston Contemporary Art Center in New Mexico, and at the Noyes Museum of Art in New Jersey.  The Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts recently commissioned and acquired one of her HangTime paintings, which feature the light streams of a roller coaster captured on a nighttime helicopter ride.  Discover more about Carla and her work:Carla's WebsiteCarla's InstagramFollow Martin Benson for more insights:*To stay updated on the podcast and related content, check out my Instagram*To support the show and access exclusive content, consider subscribing for $0.99/month on Instagram (link above).Credits: Special thanks to Matthew Blankenship of The Sometimes Island for our podcast theme music!Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/martin-l-benson/support

“I appreciate the Rococo for its extravagance and theatricality, as it appeals to my love of kitsch.”- STUART NETSKY      Netsky is a conceptual artist making paintings, mixed media sculptures, prints and other objects. An original voice and artist whose work jumps off the canvas and confronts us with the eclectic absurdity of our image inundated culture. A lover of the theatrical, mixed with his unique version of pop and Romantic master painting.  His work is made in distinct series, creating a pictorial eclecticism that obscures our ability to make sense of the image, acting as a metaphor for the confusion and shifting dichotomies in social interactions.Digital images speak to our technologically driven world and reflect the temporal paradox in pop culture whereby the past is brought to the present, the present to the past. He digitally appropriates art and historical images with those from film and popular culture, juxtaposed with psychedelic and floral patterns and mixes them all together. His influences include Francois Boucher and Gerhard Richter, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Gene Davis, Bridget Riley, Nicholas Krushenick and Jean-Antoine Watteau, among others - the rococo and abstraction, op art and pop art, anime and realism, and the psychedelic all come together, layered, spliced and distorted, materials that evoke the psychosexual. He views his practice as a drag display operating within the  time he has lived in while embracing nostalgia and romanticism for their tender and universal  sensibilities. He received a Master of Art in Art Education from Philadelphia College of Art in 1986 and went on to receive a Master of Fine Art in sculpture from Tyler School of Art, Elkins Park, PA in 1990. Netsky was an Adjunct Professor at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Jefferson University. He has had solo exhibitions of his work at Philadelphia's Institute of Contemporary Art, Larry Becker Contemporary Art, Richard Anderson, NYC, Locks Gallery, Bridgette Mayer Gallery, and a retrospective at the Rosenwald Wolf Gallery, University of the Arts. He has also shown in innumerable group shows nationally and internationally. In 1995, he received the Pew Fellowship in the Arts. As you reflect on this conversation, consider how your own experiences and challenges might be transformed through creative expression and connection. Remember that sharing your journey, setting healthy boundaries, and advocating for understanding can be powerful tools in the mental health landscape. Note from Samuel: I was raised in a progressive Jewish family in Baltimore, MD. I went to the same small progressive school that my mother and aunt attended — my grandmother actually taught there while the two of them were in school, and my mother later taught there while my brother and I attended. When I was 18, I traveled halfway across the country to attend Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. There I met my wife, Kelley Stevens, better known as “The Private Practice Pro.” I attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed my psychiatry residency training at Loma Linda University. As I was completing my residency, I began to explore the world of stand-up comedy, and started performing throughout Southern California before traveling to other parts of the country to tell jokes, when I'm not too busy seeing patients. I myself have diagnoses of both OCD and ADHD. More than anything, OCD has colored so much of my experience. Because of this, my symptoms and struggles with this condition provide much of the material for my comedy. Instagram: @samsilvermancomedy ————————————————————————————————

Welcome to Hearts of Oak.  Our interview today features sculptor Sabin Howard discussing his monumental piece, "A Soldier's Journey," set to unveil at the National World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Sabin reflects on his late start in art at age 19, influenced by his European heritage, and details the nearly decade-long creation process of the 60-foot sculpture depicting a soldier's transformative experience in war.  He emphasizes the importance of traditional techniques, public connection, and the role of art in addressing collective trauma.  Sabin also notes the challenges faced during production, including logistics impacted by COVID-19, and is working on a documentary and a book titled "Born Cancelled."  His work aims to create accessible art that resonates with universal themes and honours veterans while reflecting on the human condition. Sabin Howard is the sculptor of A Soldier's Journey, the sculptural heart of the National WWI Memorial to be installed in Washington DC in September, 2024. Sabin grew up in New York City and in Torino, Italy. He studied art at the Philadelphia College of Art and then earned his MFA from the New York Academy of Art. For twenty years, he taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He has been elected to the board of the National Sculpture Society. He has received numerous commissions and has showed his work at more than fifty solo and group shows. After 72,000 hours of working from life models in the studio, Sabin designed and created the hero's journey that memorializes the courage and sacrifice of our veterans in WWI, and in all wars, in A Soldier's Journey. He has created an illustrious body of work, including three heroic scale pieces, HERMES, APHRODITE, and APOLLO, as well as many smaller pieces. His works are owned by museums and private collectors all over the world, and they have been favorably reviewed by USA Today, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Epoch Times, American Artist, Fine Arts Connoisseur, American Arts Collector, and The New Criterion, as well as many other journals internationally. He is an accomplished public speaker and is the subject of several television profiles. Today Dr. Liz Hale and Dr. Ray Christner discuss the pivotal role fathers play in their daughters' lives. They explore how dads can empower their daughters, the significance of role models, and the importance of emotional intelligence. Dr. Christner shares practical examples and personal experiences, emphasizing the impact of everyday choices and the modeling of respectful behavior. parenting #girldad #fatherdaughter About RayDr. Christner received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the California University of Pennsylvania (now Pennsylvania Western University, California), where he continued to complete a Master’s degree and certification in School Psychology. He worked as a school psychologist for several years before returning to school for further education. He earned his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM; now The PCOM School of Professional and Applied Psychology). Insights: Ray: Being a father is probably the most important job I've ever had, and maybe many ever will have. So just remembering our small everyday choices really do pave the way to our daughters having a refined definition of what their future looks like. So focus on those little, those little everyday choices. Liz: Creating that safety for when things don't go well. And being there before, during and after. For a child for a daughter. It's just that's just really beautiful. I think it's so crucial. With similarities to modern-day sockeyes, this giant species in the genus Oncorhynchus used to spawn in the Pacific Northwest as recently as 4-5 million years ago. What were its spikes for? Why did it go extinct? And is there anything we can learn from past extinctions? Three guests to help us reflect on this prehistoric branch on the salmon family tree: Ray Troll (artist), Kerin Claeson (professor of anatomy at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine), and Brian Sidlauskas (professor and curator of fishes at Oregon State University).

Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Police investigating murder of woman shot at south Gwinnett shopping center A woman was fatally shot Saturday night at a shopping center in Snellville. Gwinnett Police officers responded to the incident at 3541 Stone Mountain Highway around 7:30 p.m. and found the suspect being subdued by witnesses. The suspect was arrested, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved or a motive, but it may be domestic-related. The suspect is being questioned. Police urge anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, referencing Case No. 24-0042372. STORY 2: New Lawsuits Filed to stop Mulberry city council elections Stephen Hughes is trying to stop the new city of Mulberry's council elections following his unsuccessful attempt to block the city's creation. He has filed lawsuits against Gwinnett County and its elections board, arguing that Senate Bill 333, which established the referendum, violates the Georgia Constitution. The lawsuits aim to halt the November 5 council elections. If successful, a judge's ruling could prevent Mulberry from becoming Gwinnett County's 17th city on January 1, 2025. Mulberry supporters argue the lawsuits are driven by developers opposed to the city's formation, while Hughes challenges the bill's provisions on taxation and city services. STORY 3: Kemp heading to Korea on trade mission Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp are leading a trade mission to South Korea with state legislators and representatives from various state departments. The trip, focused on strengthening existing business relationships, will include meetings with executives from Hyundai, Kia, CJ Foodville, LG, SK, and Hanwha Qcells, many of which are part of Georgia's growing electric vehicle industry. The mission aims to reinforce partnerships that bring investments and jobs to Georgia, emphasizing the importance of connectivity and open communication for economic progress.     We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Chimpanzees are being forced to eat bat feces, and the viruses in itResearchers in Uganda have noticed a new behaviour in the wild chimps they study. The apes are browsing on bat guano, apparently to access the nutrients it contains, as their normal source for these nutrients has been destroyed by humans. Since bats are carriers of a range of diseases, from ebola to coronaviruses, this may be a new way these diseases could spread. The study was published in Communications Biology. Dr Tony Goldberg, a professor of epidemiology at the school of veterinary medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was part of the team.Controversial methods are working to buy Canada's caribou some timeWoodland caribou have been in steady decline for decades, as logging, oil and gas exploration and other disturbances compromise their western mountain habitat. Steady progress has been made to restore habitat in order to save these caribou, but since these forests will take half a century to regrow, conservationists are trying a variety of interim actions to buy the caribou some time. A new study led by Clayton Lamb from the University of British Columbia Okanagan found that these methods, including direct feeding, maternal penning, and, controversially, culling predatory wolves, have helped caribou recover to some extent, but restoration of their habitat will be necessary for full recovery. The research was published in the journal Ecological Applications.Giant ancient Pacific salmon had tusks sticking out of its faceMillions of years ago, enormous three metre-long salmon inhabited the seas of the Pacific coast. Named Oncorhynchus rastrosus, this ancient giant was first described in the 1970s as having long front fangs, which led to it being known colloquially as a “saber-toothed salmon.” But a new study published in PLOS ONE sets the record straight: the teeth actually protruded out to the sides from the fish's upper jaw, as tusks do. Lead study author and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine professor Kerin Claeson says despite their menacing look, the salmon did not hunt with these tusks, since these strange fish were filter feeders. The Gulf oil spill may have had ecological impacts we haven't seen yetFourteen years ago an explosion destroyed the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and kicked off the largest oil spill in history. While commercial fisheries have largely recovered from the disaster, there are signs that rarer and more vulnerable species might have been devastated. Prosanta Chakrabarty from Louisiana State University surveyed deep sea fish catalogued in museum collections around the world and found that out of 78 endemic species found only in the Gulf, 29 of them haven't been spotted in the years since the spill. The research was published in the Biodiversity Data Journal.Primordial black holes may be the solution the problem of missing dark matterThe hunt for exotic black holes that Stephen Hawking first predicted back in the 1970s is now well underway. Primordial black holes behave just like any other black hole, but they would have  formed in the early universe and could  be any size. Many scientists are particularly interested in the primordial black holes that are the size of an atom and have the mass of an asteroid because they suspect they could be the answer for the missing dark matter in our universe.

Season THREE Episode THIRTEEN of the Your Story Our Fight® podcast welcomes Donna Jordan. Born in the vibrant city of Newark, NJ in 1956, Donna emerged as an artist nurtured by the rich tapestry of culture and creativity surrounding her. From an early age, her parents encouraged her artistic freedom, leading her to immerse herself in every art program Newark had to offer.Donna's journey began with humble yet impactful beginnings, as she adorned church walls with thematic murals and painted holiday scenes on local storefronts, igniting a passion for visual storytelling. High school beckoned her to the prestigious Arts High, the first visual and performing arts institution in the nation, where she honed her craft in painting, photography, and design. Venturing further, she pursued formal training at the Philadelphia College of Art, delving deep into the realm of abstract expressionism, a genre that resonated with her soul. Philadelphia became her canvas, where she showcased her work in exhibitions and contributed to urban revitalization through mural commissions. California's allure drew Donna westward, where she immersed herself in the vibrant artist community while honing her skills as a designer and production manager. In 1984, serendipity intervened as she met her husband Michael, ushering in a new chapter of family and creativity. Several years later she was diagnosed with Lupus, which changed her life and her family's life forever. Amidst the joys of parenthood and the challenges of living with Lupus, Donna's art became not only her refuge but also a catalyst for collaboration. Establishing the Jordan Design Network allowed her to transcend physical limitations and unite with fellow artists in collective expression. Today, as Donna continues her artistic journey in the embrace of her beloved family and the ever-inspiring landscapes of New Jersey, she invites you to join her on a podcast where we explore the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of art.

I co-chaired AO courses for 20 years and was faculty for more and the philosophy behind AO and the friendships I made, became a big part of my personal and professional life. I still have the program from the first AO course I attended in 1982 with Stephen Perren and Tom Ruedit! I was part of the three-person team that negotiated the merger of PCPM into Temple. I was very fortunate to have great mentors along the way, a true blessing in my career. On the personal side, I got a love of all things Irish from my father, particularly Irish music, and literature. We'll be right back   Break 2: PEGGY SLAPPY – DTL   STORY 4: My students in prison have complex pasts but are now creating new stories The Northwestern University Prison Education Program recently celebrated the graduation of 16 incarcerated students with bachelor's degrees. The program aims to provide higher education opportunities to those in prison, fostering growth, healing, and rehabilitation. The students, who shared their complex life stories through assignments like sociological autobiographies, demonstrate the diverse backgrounds and challenges faced by individuals in the criminal justice system. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding the complexity of individuals behind bars, acknowledging their humanity, dreams, and potential for positive change. The incarcerated students participated in a full liberal arts curriculum, highlighting their academic capabilities and resilience.   STORY 5: This lawsuit has the NCAA staring down extinction. Is that a bad thing? The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is facing a potential class-action lawsuit from current and former athletes seeking $1.4 billion in damages for violating antitrust laws by restricting compensation for the use of athletes' "names, images, and likenesses" (NIL). The NCAA argues that such damages could force the curtailing of college sports programs across the country and has appealed the case. This legal battle comes amid a broader shift in policies surrounding college athletes' compensation, with increased focus on the athletes' earning rights, particularly in the context of NIL endorsements. The NCAA's longstanding amateurism model is under scrutiny as the landscape of college sports evolves.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: TOM WAGES – JACKSON EMC Story 6: ANGIE CLAWSON SALVATION ARMY And now, here is Keith Ippolito's conversation with Angie Clawson from the Salvation Army. This drop may signal a prolonged decline in mortgage rates, influenced by factors such as a slowing job market and signs that the Federal Reserve's efforts to combat inflation are effective. Mortgage rates are also impacted by factors like decreased mortgage applications and lenders vying for a shrinking pool of applicants. The Federal Reserve's decision to pause interest rate hikes contributes to the shift in mortgage rates. Economists anticipate a further decrease in mortgage rates, potentially falling below 7% during the winter months.   STORY 8: Gov. Brian Kemp's chief of staff moving to Georgia Power Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's chief of staff, Trey Kilpatrick, is set to join Georgia Power as senior vice president of external affairs from January 15. Kilpatrick, who served as chief of staff since 2020, has experience working with the late U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson and an Atlanta-based investment firm. Georgia Power's CEO, Kim Greene, expressed Kilpatrick's dedication to Georgia's growth and well-being. Lauren Curry, Kemp's deputy chief of staff, will succeed Kilpatrick as chief of staff, marking the first female in this role in Georgia's history, while Brad Bohannon will become the deputy chief of staff.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. In the Senate, there are 3 committees that have advanced legislation on PBM reforms, with leadership supporting a floor vote before the end of 2023. In the House, a consolidated bill was released in September and although there are plans for a full House vote, they are stalled due to the current issues in Congress. There are 3 key jurisdictions and proposed plans of the Senate that focused on in the session: The Finance Committee, including Medicare and Medicaid; the Health, Education, Labor, and Pension (HELP) Committee, including plans that regulate under the Employee Retirement and Income Security Act and the Affordability Care Act; and the Commerce Committee, including interstate commerce and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The Finance Committee Package includes the prohibition of spread pricing in Part D for Medicaid and Medicare managed care. The Part D rebates must also be passed through the prescription drug plan sponsors, used to lower the costs for prescription drugs with a 100% pass-through in Medicaid managed care, according to Andel.
