Madison Keys can win on clay. Now that she has, maybe she'll finally believe it. The 24-year-old took home her first clay title at the Volvo Car Open, defeating Caroline Wozniacki 7-6(5), 6-2 in the final. The win capped off a resurgent week for Keys, who came into Charleston off two back-to-back heartbreaking three-set losses, and leaves with her 1st title since 2017 Stanford, having beaten three major champions - Jelena Ostapenko, Sloane Stephens, and Wozniacki - to win her fourth WTA title. Hear from both Keys and her coach Juan Todero after their wildly successful reunion.

"That's what we hold our hat on: We've got to work a little bit hard than everyone else to be successful." Charleston tournament director Bob Moran joins the TENNIS.com Podcast with Nina Pantic and Irina Falconi. He shares the biggest challenges in running the Volvo Car Open (3:50) and all the ways the WTA Premier has been innovating each year like using the Volvo Car Open app to provide an in-seat concessions service (5:53). Speaking of innovation, this February they held a UTR-based pre-qualifying event, allowing any female with a 10.0 or higher to compete for a spot in the qualifying draw. Jessica Ho, a 22-year-old Floridian who had a WTA ranking of No. 516 and a UTR of 11.79, won the wild card. Moran talks a lot about how important building tennis in the community of Charleston is, and one much-loved member of that Southern community is Shelby Rogers. The 26-year-old made her comeback from knee surgery this week after 13 months off the tour (15:52). The largest WTA-only clay event in the U.S. has a reputation for being the go-to spot to catch future stars. Past champions and finalists include the likes of Kiki Bertens, Sloane Stephens, Daria Kasatkina, Angelique Kerber and Jelena Ostapenko. Moran looks out for which youngster might be the next star, and even named Bianca Andreescu as one such potential act—notably before she won Indian Wells and withdrew from Charleston (24:31). “There’s no real moment where you’re 100 percent sure you’re ready to play again. You just kind of have to jump back in and go for it.” Shelby Rogers joins Nina Pantic and Irina Falconi on the TENNIS.com Podcast this week. The American is ready for her return to the tour at her hometown event, the Volvo Car Open in Charleston. The former world No. 48 has been out for just over a year after undergoing left knee surgery, and explains the ordeal she went through and how the new protected ranking rules are helping her (02:53). She was ranked No. 78 when she played her last match in the first round of Indian Wells in 2018. Time away from the tour hasn't been all bad though as the 26-year-old got to live a normal life and embraced online school with Indiana University East (06:23). While she was injured, Rogers also tried her hand at working for the Tennis Channel as a commentator, interviewer and host (08:04). It’s Rogers’ first significant injury, so she shares what she learned and what goes into plotting a comeback schedule, which may include a return to Roland Garros (14:31). We take a break from the serious stuff to dig up her falsely edited Wikipedia page from years ago which claimed she lost several toes in a car accident and credited power lifting for her comeback (17:33). Back to business—she explains how her life changed after she reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 2016, including entry into the Elite 8 Club (19:41). And now that she’s had experience working in working for media, she tells us how her perspective has changed (21:36). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Laura Siegemund was on a clay-court roll last spring before she went down in a heap ahead of the French Open, blowing out her ACL during a match at the Nuremberg Open. Sidelined for 10 months, Siegemund used her time to further her psychology studies and dip her toe in public speaking. Siegemund returns to her hometown tournament at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix this week as the defending champion. WTA Insider caught up with the German two weeks ago at the Volvo Car Open, where she made her tour-level return. You know it's the clay season when Kiki Bertens starts taking home titles. The 26-year-old clay court stalwart kicked off her clay season by capturing the biggest title of her career on Sunday, defeating Julia Goerges 6-2, 6-1 to win the Volvo Car Open. To win her first Premier title, Bertens had to do it the hard way. After rain washed out play on Semifinal Saturday, Bertens saved match point in a grueling 2 hour and 42 minute semifinal win over Madison Keys before turning around to play the final a few hours later. Not that Bertens minded all too much. The more hours she gets to spend on her favorite surface, the better. And it showed in Charleston. Bertens was all smiles as she joined the WTA Insider Podcast after her long final day, to discuss her up and down season so far, why her game just makes sense on clay, and why she owes Aleksandra Krunic more than just a glass of wine after her title run.

Episode 77 truly struggled to be born, interrupted and amended by the news that shook the tennis world: Serena might be -- and then, definitely is -- pregnant. The night before, we recorded a perfectly fine look at the upcoming clay season and a fun #SeeWhatHadHappenedWas about the French Fed Cup madness. All that is still here, but first, we ride the wave of emotions inflicted upon us by the GOAT troll, Serena Jameka Williams. All that and an interview with tennis photographer Daniel Ward, whom Jonathan met at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, SC. 0:00 Serena's team confirms what we feared: she's pregnant & missing all of 2017 5:00 Our first - now irrelevant - take on the Serena Snapchat bombshell 12:35 The original episode 77, before Serena messed everything up 14:50 Let's talk about the clay season - Novak & Andy are back, Roger's out 22:30 Male players we're watching on the clay 26:45 WTA on clay - Serena's nowhere to be found, but Maria is coming 32:00 The race for WTA no. 1 and other women to watch this clay season 34:35 Schiavone wins title at Bogota, makes RG main draw 38:25 Vicky Duval beats Tomljanovic & Bouchard at Challenger 40:55 #SeeWhatHadHappenedWas #FedCupDrama #LOL 54:30 Jonathan's interview with tennis photog Daniel Ward (@uncdanward)
Episode 75 is our second dispatch from the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, South Carolina. The weather is moody and the top seeds are dropping like flies. Jonathan brings us two interviews: the first a casual chat with two Tennis Twitter pals, and then an engaging sit down with the one and only Mirjana Lučić-Baroni. Also, be on the lookout for an interview with Naomi Osaka on episode 76! 1:15 Jonathan's hectic day in Charleston 4:03 Keys, Venus & Vesnina headline a day of upsets 7:38 Richard Williams sightings all over Charleston 9:53 Assessing what's left of the draw 12:40 A parking lot chit chat with Twitter pals Chad (@CCSmooth13) & Bri (@4TheTennis) 27:43 The main draw: Jonathan's chat with Mirjana Lučić-Baroni. It's our sesquicentennial! As Ben and Courtney commemorate 150 episodes (well, actually this is our 181st, but you know we're not much for counting correctly), they first take you on a trip to the south of France, where NCR's France correspondant Carole Bouchard wraps up the Monte Carlo Masters, where Nadal won on clay and it was somehow a surprise. Then, after a detour through Fed Cup, we pivot to the south of the United States, and soak in the sounds of the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, one of our favorite stops on tour with some of our favorite people. You'll hear from four of them: volunteer extraordinaire Lynn Coursey ("She's here!"), Diane Elayne Dees and Daniel Ward of Women Who Serve, and tournament manager Eleanor Adams. Then Courtney and Ben meditate (or something) on their relative experiences with the sports worlds of Portland and Philadelphia. Ben also announces the upcoming NCRvision Song Contest which will be brought to your in just a few weeks, so be sure to tweet or email us your submissions! As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and subscribing/reviewing on iTunes or whatever your podcasting app/platform of choice may be.
