Tennis has a level of equality that women in other many other sports must envy, with equal prize money and media coverage at many top tournaments. Much of this is down to the work of the Women's Tennis Association, founded in 1973 by Billie Jean King and other players to unite all of women's professional tennis in one tour. To mark the 50th anniversary, Kim Chakanetsa talks to WTA president, Micky Lawler and top player, Johanna Konta about how the game is changing on the court and off it: the great steps made towards equality, and the challenges and the progress still to be made. Former British No1 Johanna Konta won three WTA Tour titles. She also played for Great Britain in the Davis Cup and Olympics and was semi-finalist at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros. Born in Australia she moved to train in Spain at 14 and her parents settled in the UK. She's one of only five British women to gain a world top-ten ranking in the open era – reaching No 4 in the world in June 2017. She retired from professional tennis in December 2021, before getting married and starting a family. Micky Lawler was born in Holland, and while her father's job took the family to live in Argentina, Bolivia and Kenya sport played an important part of her life growing up. A multi-linguist, she was teaching English and planning to be an interpreter when she got her first job in tennis. A highly successful sports agent before moving to the WTA, she's helped build tournaments in countries around the world as a way of increasing opportunities for players. This episode is a combination of a farewell to Simon Blair for being a fantastic co-host on The Coaching Podcast and a tribute to former professional tennis player, Johanna Konta (highest ranking of WTA #4 in the world). Simon and Emma discuss the interview with Johanna like they used to do in the original episodes on The Coaching Podcast. Emma Doyle first met Johanna Konta when she was a young junior tennis player training at the National Academy in Melbourne as part of the TAP (targeted Athlete Project) program. Emma had the fortunate experience of working on court with Johanna was she was around 12 years of age and coaching her during the World Junior U14 teams event. Therefore, when Emma was in London in November of 2017 and they reconnected at the London National Training Centre, she took the opportunity to record this interview. Johanna talks about the importance of the coach being in 'partnership' with their athlete. What she looks for in a great coach is someone who is open-minded and who has strong values - values that align with her own. Johanna was one of the most hard-working, dedicated and professional players on the tour. She retired in December of 2021 and we wish her all the success in the world for the next chapter of her life. If you would like to go straight to the interview, start this episode at 12 minutes - it is another gold dust short yet impactful interview not to be missed. Johanna Konta is a British former professional tennis player, having represented Australia until 2012. She won four singles titles on the WTA Tour, as well as 11 singles and four doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit. The former British No. 1 reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 4 on 17 July 2017.

Weihnachtsgeschenk gesucht? Besucht unseren Shop auf tennisproleten.de

"Her movement was what impressed me the most. She was so agile and quick — and very powerful. She wouldn't miss an opportunity to be aggressive." Raducanu's mother, Dong Mei Zhai, who is now known as Renee, grew up in Shenyang before moving to Toronto. She then moved with her husband, Ian, to Bromley, southeast London, when their daughter was two. The 18-year-old first picked up a racket aged five, and after showing early promise at the Bromley Tennis Academy, earned a scholarship from the Lawn Tennis Association, allowing her to train while continuing her school work. She has credited her Chinese and Romanian roots with keeping her grounded, despite an increasingly international lifestyle on the tennis circuit. The teenager, who can understand Chinese, but is said to still need to work on her speaking skills, says her drive and discipline are in large part thanks to her mother's family. I think the confidence comes from just inner belief," she tells Vogue's October edition. "My mum comes from a Chinese background, they have very good self-belief. It's not necessarily about telling everyone how good you are, but it's about believing it within yourself. I really respect that about the culture."《时尚》十月版曾专访艾玛·拉杜卡努。 She has also spoken of her pride in her parent's strict work ethic, born of their determination to succeed as migrants in a new country. Following her stunning breakthrough run at Wimbledon this summer she said: "My mom has always instilled a lot of the qualities, like discipline and respect for other people, into me, so I think having parents like I do, they always push me, they have high expectations, so I've always tried to live up to that." I would say I take a big part of my inspiration from her. While there have been some excellent matches in Toronto and Montreal, we begin by discussing the unfortunate news that none of the Big 3 nor Serena Williams will play again before the US Open, after Rafael Nadal's ongoing foot problem has forced him to return home and Serena's leg injury from Wimbledon will prevent her from playing Cincinnati next week. Will New York be last chance saloon? Turning our attention to the week's tennis, Catherine, David and Matt talk about how nice it is to see Bianca Andreescu and Simona Halep back on court, review a bittersweet week for Johanna Konta, make some big Coco Gauff predictions, explain why Aryna Sabalenka continues to impress, try to figure out why Maria Sakkari keeps losing close matches, and dissect what went wrong for Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov. There's also a tangential debate about whether there's too much faff in tennis and what - if anything - can be done about it. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. Beim Turnier in Bastad gewann Casper Ruud.

The marquee matches of the day were both won in decisive straight sets, with Stan Wawrinka romping over Andy Murray, and Coco Gauff controlling play against Johanna Konta. Tumaini Carayol, NCR's newly-enshrined Spain and Sub-Saharan Africa correspondent, joins to discuss these matches and the reactions to them. Is giving a wild card to Murray debatable, as Mats Wilander claimed? Should Konta be less walled off with the media? And what made Wawrinka and Gauff so sharp? Doch hint...

This is Great British Bosses from Anything but Footy - the series where we profile the men and women responsible for running sport in this country - from grassroots participation to those medal moments at Olympic, Paralympic and elite level. In this episode - recorded remotely from three separate locations, Mark England - Chef de Mission of the Team GB delegation for the next summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, joins us via Zoom from home to discuss how he has had to re-work the British Olympic Association's strategy for the event following the postponement to 2021.Mark will be leading the delegation from Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Japan - a repeat of his role with the history making team from Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He talks about the challenges that elite sport has had in this country in order to ensure the unprecedented medal success has not been at the expense of the welfare of the individual athletes involved. He also discusses how he is in dialogue with the International Olympic Committee over their stance on the Black Lives Matter campaign and what would happen if a Team GB athlete chose to take the knee at the games. With exactly one year to go until Tokyo 2021, he also reveals how Johanna Konta's skirt caused him a real issue in Rio and why he needs to listen to John and Michael more about how he decides his schedule during games time in order not to miss the key medal winning moments. Wim Fissette , the coach of Naomi Osaka, has coached many of the top women on the WTA Tour in a short amount of time. He took up tennis at 8 years old when his mom began playing, and became a quality junior. As a junior, he was one of the best players in Belgium but was not identified as elite. After being invited to be the hitting partner for Kim Clijsters, he decided that coaching tennis would be his life. Wim Fissette told us this action packed story of moving from hitting partner to becoming a premier coach on the WTA Tour. He discussed many aspects of his coaching career and was extremely forthcoming and earnest. Wim Fissette told us how early in his career he was unsure if he was a good coach, or if he had just gotten lucky coaching Kim Clijsters. From there he took a step back to develop his coaching skills, and then got a phone call that changed his career trajectory. Wim Fissette breaks down his time coaching Kim Clijsters, Vika Azarenka, Johanna Konta, Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber. Wim Fissette describes how tennis has become his lifelong work, and how he balances the travel with a wife and young children at home. (Recorded March 1, 2020.
