We will have our show on the women's final soon, but in the meantime we are delighted to share a bonus episode with Saša Ozmo, the Serbian reporter who has covered Novak Djokovic more closely than anyone on his ascendancy toward the front of most of the G.O.A.T. discussions. Ben and Saša discuss Djokovic's win over Nadal (and the importance of consolidating it), the ups and downs on his recent path, where the races against Nadal and Federer now stand, differences between how Djokovic is perceived in Serbia and Western media, and the local context behind Adria Tour. If you are or know) a Serbian, please do buy Saša's book! Thank you again for the incredible support for NCR we've received on the NCR Patreon which has powered us into our TENTH(!) season! Please consider joining in as we bring you the best shows we can during the French Open! And thank you to the many listeners who have already given their support! (And thank you to G.O.A.T. backers J O'D, Mike, Pam Shriver, and Nicole Copeland!)
The No. 1 male tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic has been shut down after reportedly issuing a letter to Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley as the shambolic arrival of overseas participants continues. On Sunday night, a third plane with a positive COVID-19 test arrived in Melbourne as tennis stars continued to complain about the conditions they face in quarantine. There are now reportedly 72 players who face a hard 14-day lockdown, unable to leave their hotel rooms.Spanish tennis website Punto de Break reports Djokovic called for Tiley to support the players who are being forced into quarantine, after originally believing they would be able to leave their rooms for five hours a day to practise and receive treatment.Journalist Fernando Murciego reports Djokovic's proposals include:Fitness and training material in all roomsDecent food for elite athletes, following players taking aim at the meals on offerReduce the days of isolation for players in quarantine and carry out more tests to confirm they are negativePermission to visit your coach or physical trainer, as long as both test negativeGrant both the player and their coach permission to be on the same floor of the hotelMove as many players as possible to private houses with a tennis court to facilitate trainingANDREWS REJECTS DJOKER, SETS PLAYERS STRAIGHTVictorian Premier Dan Andrews set Djokovic straight at a press conference on Monday.“People are free to provide a list of demands. But the answer is no,” he said. “That was very clearly laid out beforehand. So the notion that there's been any change, the notion that people weren't briefed — I think that that argument really has no integrity whatsoever.”Andrews elaborated on other stars complaining about quarantine, saying: “I know that there's been a bit of chatter from a number of players about the rules. Well, the rules apply to them as they apply to everybody else, and they were all briefed on that before they came.“That was the condition on which they came. There's no special treatment here.“I'm here not so much to be opining about how in touch with the real world these people are. That's not my job. My job is to make it very clear. People were told what the rules were (before they got here).“The arrangements for the tennis are based on public health advice. The advice was, ‘It's not easy, it has to be done properly'. Despite commentary from players about what they'd like to do ... it's about what needs to be done.”Commissioner of COVID Quarantine Victoria, Emma Cassar, bluntly shut down Djokovic's requests on Monday.“It's a firm no from me,” she told Neil Mitchell on 3AW radio, adding there will be no changes to the quarantine restrictions imposed upon players.Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton also weighed in, saying he believes one tennis player is among Victoria's four new COVID-19 cases.“Victorians have gone through a long lockdown. Victorians have copped this as much as anyone in the world, and it's for them really to reflect on some of the privileged positions that others might have with respect to how their quarantine plays out,” he said.DJOKOVIC'S PROPOSALS MOCKEDDjokovic was the former president of the ATP Player Council but resigned to help set up the PTPA (Professional Tennis Players Association). As his proposals began to circulate, social media was quick to remind the world that Djokovic had tested positive for COVID-19 in June after organising the Adria Tour, a tennis exhibition series in Serbia and Croatia held without any social distancing measures in place. It comes a day after Austrian World No. 42 doubles player Philipp Oswald, who is one of the players in hard quarantine, called out Djokovic and other players who landed in Adelaide instead of Melbourne for an exhibition tournament.Tennisnet.com reported a Q&A where Oswald called out the tournament double standards as it was revealed on January 9 that a curtain-raiser to the summer of te...

When Wimbledon was cancelled amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it became the first of tennis' grand slams to be scrapped since World War II in 1945.There was uncertainty, too, surrounding the next major, the US Open, but the event is going ahead in New York with no fans, no mixed doubles and limited fields in men's and women's doubles. This despite tournament revenue -- which hit $399.6 million in 2019 -- expected to drop by as much as 80%.Tennis' bubbleBe it in the NBA, NHL or Champions League, bubbles are the new norm in sports, accompanied by coronavirus tests and temperature checks. The US Open is also operating a bubble, with players and their limited entourages being shuttled to and from the tournament's hotels to the tennis site in Flushing Meadows, Queens. Instead of the usual accommodation in swanky, high-rent Manhattan, all but a few are staying in Long Island at the Long Island Marriott and Garden City hotel.Players got used to the new setup this week -- since a warm-up tournament normally held in Cincinnati, Ohio, is being staged at the US Open site -- and so far there have been virtually no complaints."It's nice," 2012 US Open champion Andy Murray told reporters. "They've done a really good job at the hotel. They've got games and arcades and things like that, which I enjoy."They're putting on different food in the evenings for the players. We can get delivery. Room is absolutely fine. You have a gym there. So, yeah, it's absolutely fine."Private housing was an option given to players but Murray declined because he said costs were "astronomical."But Serena Williams -- making a ninth attempt at landing a record 24th grand slam title -- and Novak Djokovic preferred their own digs. For Williams, past health scares including pulmonary embolisms swayed her decision."I didn't want to be in the hotel because I have lung issues, so I felt like it was actually a big risk for me personally," the American told reporters. "At my house, I can control more. There is no housekeeping, there is none of that type of stuff."And so as much as I want to be here, it's great, but I have genuine health issues that I just really needed to put my mind at rest to even be able to perform in New York."Djokovic, who tested positive for the coronavirus after his ill fated Adria Tour was cut short, is based at a home described by the New York Times as "nestled amid trees.""With the trees and serenity, being in this kind of environment is a blessing," Djokovic told the newspaper. "And I'm grateful, because I've seen the hotel where the majority of players are staying."I don't want to sound arrogant or anything like that, and I know the (United States Tennis Association) did their best in order to provide accommodation and organize everything and organize these bubbles so the players can actually compete and come here, but it's tough for most of the players, not being able to open their window and being in a hotel in a small room."Notable no-showsPlayers have said they felt safe in the new environment. But due to the pandemic, several stars bypassed the US Open. The highest-profile absentee is defending men's champion Rafael Nadal, who could have tied Roger Federer for the all-time men's grand slam lead.Practicing on clay rather than hard courts -- the surface of the US Open -- the Spaniard was always leaning against making the trip and officially withdrew in early August."The situation is very complicated worldwide, the COVID-19 cases are increasing, it looks like we still don't have control of it," the 19-time grand slam winner said.Other notable no-shows include Stan Wawrinka, Simona Halep, Ashleigh Barty, Kiki Bertens, Elina Svitolina, Belinda Bencic, 2004 winner Svetlana Kuznetsova, Gael Monfils, Nick Kyrgios and defending women's champion Bianca Andreescu.Andreescu, however, hasn't played since last year due to injury.Federer and 2009 titlist Juan Martin del Potro had already been ruled out as they recover fro...

Liverpool's English Premier League title win and what it means for the team and its fans. 2. Men's tennis world No. 1 Novak Djokovic has come under fire for his involvement in the Adria Tour, an exhibition series meant to bring some of the world's top players to the Balkans. Several tennis players, including Djokovic himself, and their coaches have contracted Covid-19. Safety measures at the event were lax, with physical distancing not practised and the absence of required testing for Covid-19. Why is the criticism valid and how should athletes be using their influence and voice in these times? 3.

Janko Tipsarevic joined me from Belgrade, Serbia, and we discussed in length the fallout from Adria Tour, Novak Djokovic, and the fallout. We talked about how he thinks Novak is treated by the media. We talked about his opinions of the US Open going forward, and why he thinks tennis is being run completely wrong. We discussed his career and the importance of Dirk Hordorf to his career.

The fall out from the Adria Tour coronavirus cluster took an unexpected trip to the dance floor within a week later, with video surfacing of Alexander Zverev partying in Monte Carlo just days after being repeatedly exposed to the disease (and promising to follow health protocols) enraging people around the sport in tennis and severely damaging trust in tennis players. To discuss the ramifications, and the notions of a code of conduct, Ben is joined by NCR's Middle East correspondent Reem Abulleil (please do support her Patreon as well!) to talk about what the tours can and can't do, the corrosive effects of selfishness in tennis, and more. Should tennis continue on without putting super rigid restrictions on personnel behavior in place? And if tennis has to do so much in a pandemic that it stops being fun, should it just stop all together? Big, bleak conversations are had here, but we also had a lot of fun. If you'd like to support our show, particularly as our normal work has disappeared along with the sport, we've launched an NCR Patreon where you can do just that! Check out our five tiers and see which might be right for you! And thank you to the many listeners who have already given their support! (And thank you to G.O.A.T. backer J O'D!) Jason and Aldwin delve right into the details, discussing the onslaught of new positive cases and official player statements as a result of Djoko's Balkan debacle. So to make sense of all the mess and madness of the tennis world, we invited Dr. Adia Benton (@ethnography911), PhD Social Anthropology, Harvard 2009 AND A HUGE TENNIS FAN. Dr. Benton is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at Northwestern University, where she is affiliated with the Science in Human Culture Program. Her first book, HIV Exceptionalism: Development Through Disease in Sierra Leone, won the 2017 Rachel Carson Prize, which is awarded by the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) to the best book in the field of Science and Technology Studies with strong social or political relevance. Her body of work addresses transnational efforts to eliminate health disparities and inequalities, and the role of ideology in global health. In addition to ongoing research on public health responses to epidemics, including the 2013-2016 West African Ebola outbreak, she has conducted research on the growing movement to fully incorporate surgical care into commonsense notions of “global health.” Her other writing has touched on the politics of anthropological knowledge in infectious disease outbreak response, racial hierarchies in humanitarianism and development, the business of professional sports, and techniques of enumeration in gender-based violence programs. She has a PhD in social anthropology from Harvard University, an MPH in international health from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, and an AB in Human Biology from Brown University. She has held a postdoctoral fellowship at Dartmouth College and visiting positions at Oberlin College and in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. We discussed the enigma that is Covid-19, the global and American response specifically and of course what the hell went on at the Adria Tour. It was fun and informative and a pleasure speaking with Dr. Benton. ***Want to say thanks to Dr. Benton for taking time out of her life to be a guest on this episode*** Don't forget that the discussion can continue wherever you can find us to tell us your comments and how you really feel!!!
Two programming alerts for you here, one sort of a bummer but the other one super-duper.Firstly, we decided that the US Open roundtable episode we recorded after the press conference in New York had become instantly outdated when the positive tests started rolling in from the reckless Adria Tour, so we made the tough decision not to publish it since it was feeling obsolete. In much happier programming news, we have some very fun stuff rolling onto our Patreon now: games of tennis-themed Codenames with Ben, Courtney, Blair Henley and Nick McCarvel! We had a TON of fun with our friends, and hope you'll have just as much watching the three-part video series, the first round of which is up now. To access these shows, and for the hook up on how to play this tennis-themed game with your own crew of tennis-loving friends, please join the 200+ wonderful listeners who are backing us on our Patreon. If you'd like to support our show, particularly as our normal work has disappeared along with the sport, we've launched an NCR Patreon where you can do just that! Check out our five tiers and see which might be right for you! And thank you to the many listeners who have already given their support! (And thank you to G.O.A.T. backer J O'D!)As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook (leave comments on the episode thread!
