Emergence of perceptual reorganisation from prior knowledge in human development and Convolutional Neural Networks

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.21.517321v1?rss=1 Authors: Milne, G. A., Lisi, M., McLean, A., Zheng, R., Groen, I. I. A., Dekker, T. M. Abstract: The use of prior knowledge to guide perception is fundamental to human vision, especially under challenging viewing circumstances. Underpinning current theories of predictive coding, prior knowledge delivered to early sensory areas via cortical feedback connections can reshape perception of ambiguous stimuli, such as 'two-tone' images. Despite extensive interest and ongoing research into this process of perceptual reorganisation in the adult brain, it is not yet fully understood how or when the efficient use of prior knowledge for visual perception develops. Here we show for the first time that adult-like levels of perceptual reorganisation do not emerge until late childhood. We used a behavioural two-tone paradigm to isolate the effects of prior knowledge on visual perception in children aged 4 - 12 years and adults, and found a clear developmental progression in the perceptual benefit gained from informative cues. Whilst photo cueing reliably triggered perceptual reorganisation of two-tones for adults, 4- to 9-year-olds' performed significantly poorer immediately after cueing than within-subject benchmarks of recognition. Young childens' behaviour revealed perceptual biases towards local image features, as has been seen in image classification neural networks. We tested three such models (AlexNet, CorNet and NASNet) on two-tone classification, and while we found that network depth and recurrence may improve recognition, the best-performing network behaved similarly to young children. Our results reveal a prolonged development of prior-knowledge-guided vision throughout childhood, a process which may be central to other perceptual abilities that continue developing throughout childhood. This highlights the importance of effective reconciliation of signal and prediction for robust perception in both human and computational vision systems. Copy rights belong to original authors. Freddie Keppard was king before King Oliver and he fortunately recorded quite a bit in Chicago in the 1920's, although many items are up for debate . . Here he is definitely with his own Jazz Cardinals, Cookie's Gingersnaps and Jimmy Bertrand. Somewhat less certain are the records with Jimmy Blythe, Sarah Martin and the Kansas City Stompers, although all have great jazz regardless! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support

They are a “cornet band” because the instruments they play (with the exception of percussion and occasional trombones) all come from the “saxhorn” family (conical brass). Like the modern British brass band, they use cornets (not trumpets) and alto horns with upright bells (not French horns), tenor horns (also with upright bells), baritone horns, and tubas. The music is a lot of fun, too: Verdi opera medleys from Nabucco and Atilla, old time serenades, waltzes, and marches. The Newberry Band was started in 2003 by Michael O'Connor, a musicologist and euphonium soloist who is currently on the faculty at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida. In addition to selecting the music the band performs, Mike does the research concerning band history and appropriate performance practice. A noted expert on 19th-century bands, Mike is also an entertaining speaker who provides informative notes about the music during the concert program.Vintage Band Festival, a four-day festival every three years, provides a joyful, fun, and family-friendly atmosphere with eclectic brass music played by bands from all over the world. Audiences of all ages get to enjoy the beautiful city of Northfield at both outdoor and indoor venues and experience the musical and historical legacy that Northfield has been able to cultivate. Other nearby cities are featured as well. Music and history lovers alike will be engaged by the exceptional and out of the ordinary music experience and emphasis on historical music, dress, dance, and ambience.

Wimbledon week one saw a GOAT come and go, her sister light up the doubles court, the two male legends anchor their sides of the draw, and the loquacious Cornet end Swiatek's 37-match win streak. Saturday lit up the tournament for reasons good and bad; after Anisimova notched an impressive win over Gauff, Kyrgios and Tsitsipas gave an absolute shit show of code violations, toxic behavior, and occasionally compelling tennis.
