Souvenirs...
Angelica Gavaldon has lived a difficult and amazing life in tennis. She grew up in Tijuana, Mexico, was a highly touted junior, and blasted onto the scene in 1990 when she qualified and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Along with Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis she was identified as a blue chip prospect and the pressure of being on tour affected her right from the beginning. After the tremendous success at the 1990 Aussie the 16 year old t was burnt out and took a self imposed extended break. She worked her way back and in 1995 repeated the feat, qualifiying and then quartering The 1995 Australian Open. She got to 34 in the world in 1996, and over the course of her career posted wins over great champions including Novotna, Graf, Mandlikova, Majoli, and Amanda Coetzer. We discussed how she has recently rediscovered her love for tennis, Angelica shared her views on the state of Mexican tennis, and how she is trying to bring a pro tournament to Baja Mexico. It was a terrific chat. Recorded 9.25 Released 9.30The Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast is Powered by Diadora and The Golden Ticket Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What happens when you put one of the world's most famous tennis coaches together with an outstanding neurologist with a passion for our beautiful game? The answer is a fantastic book that can help shape the approach you take to tennis and the approach you take to life. The book is called Billion Dollar Mind, and in today's episode, we have the two authors. The coach is the world famous Rick Macci, who featured prominently in the King Richard film as he coached Serena and Venus as juniors, as well as Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, Jennifer Capriati and a whole host of others, including our other guest, Dr Nivedita (Niva) Uberoi Jerath. Dr Niva is an accomplished player and an equally accomplished neurologist.Rick takes us through his approach to tennis and life alongside some amazing anecdotes about his approach with players who went on to become global stars, whilst Dr Niva brings neuroscience based strategies to help you achieve your full potential.Whether you are a coach, player or parent, if you believe in the power of positivity and want to get practical tips on how to be more positive, I highly recommend the Billion Dollar Mind book and I think you're going to enjoy this episode. Graf, Navratilova, Seles, Serena, Hingis... Jennifer Capriati not only competed with the game's greats, she beat them. It was an unconventional path. From youth prodigy to tennis survivor, Capriati put herself back in slam contention in 2003 when she met Justine Henin in an all-time classic semifinal under the lights at Arthur Ashe. Renowned coach, Rick Macci, is back alongside his former student and current neuromuscular neurologist (more info on that in the pod!), Dr. Nivedita Uberoi Jerath aka Dr. Niva, to discuss their new book, BILLION DOLLAR MIND (https://amzn.to/3tMs021). Last year, you had the opportunity to hear from Rick about his coaching philosophy and approach to junior tennis development (https://parentingaces.com/articles/its-a-journey-ft-rick-macci/). In this episode, I interview one of the greatest tennis coaches ever. Coach Rick Macci has coached tennis for over 40 years. He's helped five players reach world #1 including Serena and Venus Williams, Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, and Jennifer Capriati. If his name sounds familiar, it may be because Rick was portrayed by Jon Bernthal in the movie "King Richard".Rick shares several entertaining stories from when he coached these players, the type of mindset he encourages players to adopt, and stories from their junior days. One interesting part of the episode is his explanation for why he thinks playing doubles is especially helpful for younger professional players. He uses Coco Gauff as one example. We also discuss:How often the Williams sisters played doubles as juniors & 2 rules he made them follow. What a club player should look for (and not look for) when searching for a coach. How to develop confidence in strategies that you're uncomfortable with (like poaching!)The mindset players need on the court against pushers or counter-punchers.His favorite doubles drills. You'll get a lot out of this episode in terms of strategy and mindset. Rick has a new book coming out called Billion Dollar Mind that we chat about as well. At the end, Rick talks about how he likes to use video to help club-level players improve. Something I'm a big advocate of and use all the time myself.See the shownotes for this episode here: https://www.thetennistribe.com/rick-macci-interview/**Doubles Strategy Courses** These video courses will help you play smarter doubles and make winning easier.25 Winning Doubles Tactics Video Course: https://the-tennis-tribe.teachable.com/p/25-winning-doubles-tacticsLeague Doubles Training Masterclass Video Course: https://the-tennis-tribe.teachable.com/p/league-doubles-training**Doubles Ebooks** These guides offer proven advice to improve your doubles strategy.25 Winning Doubles Tactics: https://www.thetennistribe.com/25-winning-doubles-tactics/Return Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/return-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/Serve Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/serve-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/Net Play Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/net-play-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/***Download your free doubles guide to learn how to force errors and get more easy volleys at TheTennisTribe.com/doubles-guide/. ***Tennis Gear reviews: The best racquets, shoes, bags, & moreRead our written doubles lessons hereSubscribe to our YouTube Channel for video lessons

She has been ranked No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and is the first Asian player to hold the top ranking in singles. She is a four-time Grand Slam singles champion. Her seven titles on the WTA Tour also include two at the Premier Mandatory level. At the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Australian Open, Osaka won her first two Grand Slam singles titles in back-to-back Grand Slam tournaments. She was the first woman to win successive Grand Slam singles titles since Serena Williams in 2015, and was the first to win her first two in successive majors since Jennifer Capriati in 2001. Born in Japan to a Haitian-American father and a Japanese mother, Osaka has lived and trained in the United States since age three. She came to prominence at age 16 when she defeated former US Open champion Samantha Stosur in her WTA Tour debut at the 2014 Stanford Classic. Two years later, she reached her first WTA final at the 2016 Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo to enter the top 50 of the WTA rankings. Osaka made her breakthrough into the upper echelon of women's tennis in 2018 when she won her first WTA title at the Indian Wells Open. Later in the year, she defeated 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams in the final of the US Open to become the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title. Since 2018, Osaka has won a Grand Slam singles title in four consecutive years. In mid-2021, suffering from depression and other issues, Osaka retired from the French Open, dropped out of Wimbledon, and lost early at the US Open. She closed down the rest of her tennis season to focus on family and health. Osaka is one of the world's most marketable athletes, having been ranked eighth among all athletes in endorsement income in 2020. She was also the highest-earning female athlete of all time by annual income that year. Osaka has gained significant recognition as an activist, having showcased support for the Black Lives Matter movement in conjunction with her matches. She was named one of the 2020 Sports Illustrated Sportspersons of the Year for her activism largely as part of her US Open championship run, and was also included on Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Moreover, she was the 2021 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she became the first tennis player to light the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony. On the court, Osaka has an aggressive playing style with a powerful serve that can reach 201 kilometers per hour (125 mph).

This week Maya is getting over a cold and lamenting how hard it is to be even just a little sick during a pandemic. Amy recounts giving it 100 at dominating at tennis. The ladies review Adele's special and Oprah's seemingly out-of-touch focus on the singer's weight, which causes Amy & Maya to conclude apparently your meat suit is everything. Next, they take a deep dive down pizza memory lane with Dominos and Rocky Rococo. Maya reviews the new Venus and Serena movie King Richard, which prompts them to take a deep dive into tennis nostalgia remembering all their fav tennis stars from the 90s including Jennifer Capriati and her Mazda Miata. The tennis world has always had a fascination with the young tennis prodigy. Whether it be Jennifer Capriati, Venus Williams, Rafa Nadal or even today, with Coco Gauff, we always find ourselves rooting and searching for the next great champion. When 15 year old, Cici Bellis made a name for herself at the 2014 US Open by upsetting a top 20 player in her grand slam debut, all eyes turned to this young future star of the game. In 2017, she would climb all the way to #35 in the world by defeating elite players such as: Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova and Svetlana Kuznetsova, and her strong season would earn her the exclusive title of WTA Newcomer of the Year. 2018 & 2019 would be both difficult and disappointing seasons as elbow and wrist surgeries would sideline this would-be champion from the game. But as with every great tennis journey, the best players always find a way back, and in 2020, she would finish her resilient year with a title run in Macon, Georgia (her 1st in 4 years). Join this fun interview as host, Jon Guerrica surprises Cici with one of her biggest cheerleaders in life and we learn how Cici plans to take the 2021 WTA season by storm. Now at 21, listen as we cover all of Cici's greatest career highlights, play a fun game or two and find out why Tennis Channel just chose her to be the next star of "My Tennis Life"....we'll give you a hint why, she's pretty fantastic. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jon-guerrica/support

The 2001 French Open saw Jennifer Capriati beat Kim Clijsters 12-10 in the final set to win her second Grand Slam title, but this was just a small part of Capriati’s story, one we tell in full on this podcast with the help of Tom Gullikson (her former coach), Lindsay Davenport (her compatriot) and Mary Carillo (someone who tracked her career closely). We cover Capriati’s prodigious talent and breakthrough results, her downward spiral and the events which turned her into a cautionary tale, her resurgence and Grand Slam wins, and the way in which she is still troubled today.Reflecting on her run to the Roland Garros title, we discuss the symbolism of Capriati’s semi-final victory over Martina Hingis and the dramatic but error-ridden nature of the final against Clijsters. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, featuring Matt Roberts. Not many people expected Andre Agassi to win the French Open, especially not in 1999, and certainly not when he fell two sets down in the final against Andrei Medvedev. But then he produced one of the greatest comebacks of all time, recovering to beat Medvedev and complete the coveted career Grand Slam. In this episode we talk through the events which led Agassi to that point. What had happened in his previous two French Open finals? Why did he used to skip Wimbledon and the Australian Open? And how did he get his career back on track after dropping to No.141 in the world? We hear from Brad Gilbert, Agassi’s coach at Roland Garros in 1999, who explains why Agassi’s participation at that year’s French Open was in doubt, how he came through a tough draw, and what he said to him during the rain delay. Andrei Medvedev, meanwhile, gives his version of events, and Chris Clarey of the New York Times tells us how Agassi’s Roland Garros title set in motion the most dominant spell of his career. This week, we once again look at the question of just how young is too young to force your child to be a bread winning, family supporting professional athlete. I think we can now safely say that 13 might be the answer. She burst on to the international tennis scene as a 7th grader, and quickly took the world by storm. She also began to hate her forced profession, and all that surrounded it, leading to years of problems & resentment. After a major career comeback, an injury forces her into a weird, dark place called "retirement", and a whole new round of problems!! Come out of the womb holding a tennis racquet, be a world famous hero by age 13, then go mainly downhill from there with Jennifer Capriati!! Check us out, every Tuesday! We will continue to bring you the biggest idiots in sports history!! Parenting in the Rain, Episode 25 Divorce and Sports Are you a parent worried about your child through your divorce? Here’s a link to my s Free Parent Class http://jackieflynnconsulting.com/parentingthroughdivorce In This Episode: Brian Brunkow is a San Diego-based lawyer, Glazier Head Coach Academy speaker, and the author of Zero Offseason – a guidebook on divorce & sports parenting. With a background in family law and coaching youth football, Brian’s focus is helping coaches and parents collaborate on the “ABC’s of Divorce & Effective Sports Parenting.” When time and money is so commonly used as a weapon in divorce situations, the “ABC’s” : Aligning Goals, Following the Best Interests Standard & Controlling Controllables. They help encourage the adults to stay focused on helping kids develop life skills thru positive youth sports lessons. Brian has a substantial background in coaching. It’s important to keep the kids on the field and involved in sports to give them the life skills that can come through sports. Sports can reduce the high school dropout rate with adolescents. When parents are passive aggressive with time and money, the child is the one that misses out and is ultimately hurt. Brian tells us about the Baldwin vs. Basinger story, how high conflict divorce can result in the child missing out on valuable time over custody battles. He shares some statistics about divorce. He also shares insight of how divorce can impact kids. T here are some program success studies that illustrate the importance of working together as parents for the children’s sake. Brian is the author of a book, “Zero Offseason”. Good behavior will not change the behavior of the other parent. But, it will give you a piece of mind. He tells us about the “ABC’s” : Aligning Goals, Following the Best Interests Standard & Controlling Controllables He talks to us about aligning goals. He tells us a story of divorced soccer parents and how their situation affected the child. Simple rules, but complex...“The kids gotta play, let the coaches coach, and the parents need to support.” Being the support system as a parent is so important. Sports help kids with socialization skills, as well as conflict management skills that will help keep them out of trouble in life. Youth sports teach kids discipline, mental toughness and grit. Communication between parents is very important. Using stories is a great way help parents work things out, so that the child doesn’t lose years of opportunity for sports growth. He talks to us about “Bleacher” Parents and references Jennifer Capriati and her experience through the divorce in her family. As a tennis player, she was an incredible athlete and top performer in the world. By the time she was 17 though, she retired from tennis. She didn’t have the support system at home. Some parents equate their ability as a parent with the child’s performance in the sport. The parents need to be smart about how they approach the calendar. A throughout calendar can prevent some conflicts from occurring. “ Best Interests” standard is all about the child, not the parents or the coaches. Brian recommends having a Co-Parenting Mission Statement to have on the refrigerator at both homes. You can get a copy of it at www.jackieflynnconsulting.com/divorceandsports The child may think, “Mom and Dad don’t get along, but they both have my back.” Impact – Safety is considered a “non-negotiable. Parents must communicate. For example, parents need to work together and communicate if their child gets a concussion. This is HUGELY important. It’s important for parents to remember that they can’t control bad behavior of the other parent, so it is best to focus energy on what you can control. Process-based goals keep things focused on the child. On field & off field, parents need to support their child. Brian recommends playing “Rock, Paper, Scissors” game with little kids as a way to teach them how to control the controllables. This is where you want your energy to be because this is where you can have an impact. It helps teach kids the importance of teaching them to focus on what’s in front of them. Brian is working on a program, a legal workshop for employees “aligning goals”, “best interests”, and “controlling the controllables”.

James Waterson reports on the news from day 10 of the US Open. Once again, all matches were canceled because of rain. An early mist left the courts damp, but the players went out to the courts anyway. They played for about 15 minutes before heavier rain fell, and the storms continued until the day and night sessions were canceled. Being asked to play in misty conditions frustrated the players, including Rafael Nadal. Meanwhile, Jennifer Capriati, Gustavo Kuerten and Yevgeny Kafelnikov have been announced as nominees for the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and Gael Monfils has pulled out of France’s Davis Cup semifinal tie against Spain because of a knee injury.
