Last year, in a move that shocked the tennis world, Ash Barty retired from tennis while she was the number one seed. Fans everywhere were confused when the 25 year old announced she'd be stepping away from the sport - just months after winning her third grand slam. Fast forward to January 2023, Ash & her husband have announced they are expecting a baby. Leading to speculation that this must be the reason for her retirement. Because of course, no woman can have that level of commitment to her job and a family. No woman can 'have it all'. But what does that even mean? In this episode of The Quicky, we take a look at what it means to have it all in 2023. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We're listening! Nick Kyrgios is hoping to become the first Australian man to win the Australian tennis Open in fourty seven years when the tournaments gets underway this afternoon. But he'll have to go through defending champion Rafael Nadal and nine-time winner Novak Djokovic to do it. And on the women's side it's anyone's game, after home hero Ash Barty's shock retirement last year. Host of the tennis radio show The First Serve, Brett Phillips, spoke to Jimmy Ellingham.
The first Grand Slam of 2023 will get rolling from January 16 in Melbourne, Australia. Last year, the event witnessed plenty of unseemly controversy, including a courtroom drama, over the deportation of Novak Djokovic, and it also saw Rafael Nadal pick up a historic 21st Slam title. But this year Djokovic is back, and has announced his intentions by winning the Adelaide International, a preparatory event, last week. While Nadal is the defending champion, world no 1 Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn due to a freak injury. The draw in the women's section, as has become the norm in recent years, is wide open. Naomi Osaka will be missing, as also last year's champion Ash Barty, who has retired from the sport, and world no 1 Iga Swiatek is under an injury cloud. The rest of the field has several contenders, from last year's runner-up Danielle Collins, to the Czech Petra Kvitova, world No. 2 Ons Jabeur and the American Coco Gauff. So, who are the favourites, who are the dark horses, and what are the narratives that are likely to dominate this year's Australian Open?
The first Slam of the year doesn't give us many weeks of tennis to form opinions, but it's delivered on story lines, with one taking the cake: Naomi Osaka -- having already withdrawn from the Australian Open -- announced she's pregnant and will miss the 2023 season. This barely a week after defending champ Ash Barty announced her own pregnancy. Tournament director Craig Tiley is up to his usual hijinks, this year banning booing, rolling out NFTs in an inhospitable market, and extracting surplus labour from what used to be free (player practices). All that plus draw analysis, January standouts, PTPA news, a complete diversion on our take on Rolling Stone's greatest singers list. Ready? 2:30 Naomi Osaka is missing the Australian Open, yes … but why, pray? 10:50 What kind of mess will Craig get into this year? Well, funny you should ask 16:00 Booing Novak Djokovic is illegal. Is this a real thing? 19:50 Scamming scammers: extracting surplus value from player practices plus the AO NFT gallery 29:10 The PTPA announces an executive committee 33:50 Who's standing out in the first two weeks of 2023? And remember to subscribe and share. Good Weekend senior writer Melissa Fyfe recently profiled Crowe, examining his work counselling everyone from CEOs to students to soldiers, and now hosts an in-depth chat with the man himself. In this episode, Crowe answers all the big questions: does a mindset coach need his own mindset coach? What is a ‘courage mantra' - and how do you come up with one? What was Shane Warne really like? When women's tennis world number one Ash Barty suddenly announced in March 2022 that she was retiring from tennis, it was huge shock. Barty, a three time grand slam champion, was only 25. At the time she said she was leaving professional tennis to pursue other life goals. Quitting is often seen as a negative thing to do, but in this episode we explore the positive side. PwC's Global Workforce Hopes and Fears survey of more than 52,000 people in 44 countries showed that one in five workers planned to quit their jobs in 2022. Marie Keyworth speaks to Moya Dodd, former vice-captain of Australia's women's football team - The Matildas. She now works as a lawyer in Sydney and says Barty's decision to 'quit at the top' could be a lesson to us all. Career coach Sarah Weiler has quit several roles herself, and has now made it her job to help others – how do you know when it's time to move on? And Dina Denham Smith is an executive coach based in the San Francisco Bay area. She helps what she calls ‘high performing, high achieving' people make decisions. She tells Marie how you can improve your situation if quitting isn't an option. Presented and produced by Marie Keyworth. (Image: Ash Barty. Credit: Getty)
