POPULARITY
When was the last time you picked up a book or a magazine instead of going to your smart phone or computer to read about music? I admit that, like so many of us these days, my first instinct is to scroll through social media or look at websites. The rise of digital media along with the ubiquity of smart phones has been nothing short of dramatic; the subsequent decline of print and other physical media is also impossible to ignore. Roots music journal No Depression, like so many others, went out of print in the midst of that sea change, although it continued online. Eventually it would reemerge, however, with new ownership and a new format as a quarterly publication, while offering a website covering music news as well as articles, columns and reviews. In an era where the expense of printing a magazine is more and more impossible to recoup, No Depression has managed to do just that. It remains as one of only a handful of music publications, and that is remarkable by itself. This is just part of our story here, though, as we welcome Assistant Editor and nodepression.com director Stacy Chandler to this episode of Southern Songs and Stories. Stacy spoke with me at the end of September, 2023 in Raleigh, North Carolina during the International Bluegrass Music Association's yearly event. Comprised of a wide ranging music industry conference as well as a music festival, the IBMAs, as it is often called, feature music panels geared towards music artists and professionals, showcase events where attendees can get introduced to new artists, and even Tai Chi classes courtesy of Jim Lauderdale. I was not up at 8 a.m. to take Jim's classes, but I did take in as much as I could in the whirlwind week of all things bluegrass, including this conversation with Stacy Chandler as well as bluegrass legend Pete Wernick, and both Steve Mougin and Ben Wright, who will be featured in upcoming episodes here. Stacy Chandler of No Depression interviewed at the IBMA conference 09-30-23 In this episode, we touch on the history of No Depression as well as some of the artists and articles in its current issue, plus we share takeaways from this year's IBMAs while we examine the bigger picture of bluegrass music in 2023. It is a far ranging conversation which focuses on one of the biggest weeks of the year for the genre, the ways bluegrass has changed over the decades, as well as the parallel story of print journalism in the age of smart phones. In this episode, Taraleigh and Dr. Leah talk with guitarist Walter Strauss about how he rides the edge in making music and life in general. Listeners get a music lesson as he breaks down concepts of groove, melody, rhythm, and harmony for all to understand with guitar accompaniment for experiential learning. The three discuss spontaneity and generosity in improv and live music and what it's like for everyone to be riding that edge together. Walter talks about his upcoming solo album For Melody Wherever She May Find Me and his musical collaborations all over the world. For the “Did you Know,” Dr. Leah shares how live music can relate to attachment theory and Taraleigh encourages listeners to be inspired by their favorite musicians to repair relational breaks in the “Daily Jam.” Walter Strauss is an innovative guitarist known for his richly textured and syncopated playing, as well as his international collaborations. A composer and songwriter in diverse genres, he also translates music from other instruments to the guitar, resulting in mind-bending guitar renditions of the music of the West African kora that legendary kora player Toumani Diabate calls “inspirational,” as well as music of other far-flung instruments of the world. Walter's current solo release (out April 20) “For Melody, Wherever She May Find Me” is a guitar exploration of beautiful global song melodies and originals - from a Malian balafon melody to a Stevie Wonder song and a Shetland fiddle tune. He continues his collaborations - Mamajowali, with Wassoulou hunter's harp player Mamadou Sidibe and American multi-instrumentalist Joe Craven, Fula Brothers with Mamadou Sidibe, and FulaMuse, the combined band of Fula Brothers and west coast songbirds MaMuse. Walter has composed music for film, including the Ken Burns / Artemis Joukowsky documentary “Defying the Nazis”, and the “Re-evolution: The Cuban Dream” series on PBS. He has also produced and engineered records for artists like MaMuse and former Waybacks frontman Stevie Coyle. Walter's Bay Area CD release show is coming up at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley on April 20.This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. This Episode: Newer Dancehall, Soca, House, 90s/00s RnB, New Hits, Euro-dance (Waybacks). IG LIVE SESSIONS: COVID-19 hit and DJ-ing came to a halt. However, the vibes must go on. Wasn't sure how long it was going to last, so I quickly set up in my garage (aka Man Cave #2) thinking it was going to be temporary. Between IG cutting off DJs mid-stream due to copyright claims and COVID being here to stay culturally forever, these sessions only ran for a few weeks until I made the switch to TWITCH and back in my studio. www.instagram.com/iamdjdmoney

The very highly regarded US Appalachian Old Time band, the Stairwell Sisters hit the UK for their first full Scottish tour after a remarkable performance with Celtic Connections last year. With a knack for infusing the old music with intoxicating energy and soul, the Stairwell Sisters will play from new release Get Off Your Money and accompanying the music will be a unique step-dancing/clogging collaboration between Evie Landen and Scottish step-dancer JOHN SIKORSKI of the Scottish Step Dance Co. San Francisco's all-gal urban old-time teardown, THE STAIRWELL SISTERS have amassed a rowdy repertoire of timeless tunes plus a solid standing of smart, original material that is winning praise on a international level as counter-culturalists of every generation enjoy their energetic musicianship, tight vocal arrangements and red-hot buckdancing. In the Spring of 2008 they released their third CD, Get Off Your Money, produced by Austin's Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks, Waybacks). The Stairwell Sisters have come quite far since founding members Lisa Berman and Sue Sandlin began practicing vocal harmonies in a stairwell at work. Their third release showcases the all-female string band's authentic old-time sound with the band's present-day interpretations and original compositions. The five member band arranges traditional fiddle tunes and old-time standbys by running music through the "Sister Mill". In this way, songs take on new energies and identities. Thus, songs depicting timeless themes such as working class struggles, love, and loss regain their relevancy Line Up: Stephanie Prausnitz (fiddle/vocals), Evie Ladin (banjo/clogging/vocals), Lisa Berman (dobro/vocals). Martha Hawthorne (bass/vocals) and Sue Sandlin (guitar/tiple/vocals)
Fingerstyle guitarist and songwriter Stevie Coyle has a background that puts my own song "Jack of All Trades" to shame. He's toured with The Royal Lichtenstein Circus and has hosted killer whale shows. He's been a member of The Frontmen and The Foremen. Steve is also a proud survivor of the Great Standup Comedy Scare of the 1980s.
