As the season draws to a close, Kevin contemplates whether the Eagles genuinely require need the bye week to enhance their chances for a successful playoff run. He questions if it would be prudent for the Eagles to begin limiting certain players' playing time as the playoffs near, emphasizing the potential importance of rest. The show also pays tribute to baseball legend Rickey Henderson, who sadly passed away at the age of 65. Known as the King of the Stolen Base, his contributions to the sport are celebrated. Meanwhile, the Phillies appear satisfied with their offseason activities, a sentiment that does not resonate well with Kevin Cooney and Austin Jones. While MLB analysts still regard the Phillies as the second-best team in the National League, a closer examination of the roster raises doubts about their status as true World Series contenders. On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith are in studio discussing the first ever loss in the Coliseum during the Lincoln Riley era, a 34-32 heartbreaker at the hands of Utah. After the game winning field goal as time expired, Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams are now 0-3 against the Utes over the past two seasons. After getting blown out on the road against Notre Dame, USC was looking to bounce back and get some revenge against a Utah squad that was extremely banged up. Backup quarterback Bryson Barnes stepped up his game, completing 14 of his 23 passes for three touchdowns and one interception and safety Sione Vaki dominated on offense with 9 rushes for 68 yards and 5 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. The Utes had 482 yards of offense, their highest total of the season. The Trojans offense had success running the ball with MarShawn Lloyd and Austin Jones rushing for nearly 10 yards a pop, but the duo only got 12 carries which limited their impact. Williams was 24 of 34 for 256 and didn't have a touchdown but did have the go-ahead TD scramble late in the fourth quarter. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the the latest news and notes from USC spring practices. Last week hours after their show the Trojan football team got some great news when five-star tight end Duce Robinson announced on Instagram that he was committing to USC. Since they we have heard from head coach Lincoln Riley and tight ends coach Zach Hanson about what it means to the team that Robinson will now likely be a Trojan this fall (as long as he doesn't skip college football and play professional baseball). There was also other tight end talk in practice this week with Utah linebacker transfer Carson Tabaracci now playing tight end and getting a ton of reps with the departures and injuries at that position. The guys also discuss some of the other big storylines from practice including hearing from the outgoing offensive lineman Cooper Lovelace for the first time, the added depth in the running backs room and what Austin Jones and Darwin Barlow had to say on Tuesday, Norm Chow, Uchenna Nwosu and Amon-Ra St. Brown attending practice and the upcoming live scrimmages for the Trojans this Saturday and then the spring game on April 15. Former Trojan wide receiver Travon Patterson will also be a special guest on the show talking about his time at USC and what he is doing now. Exactly one year ago today USC athletic director Mike Bohn shocked the college football world and hired head coach Lincoln Riley away from Oklahoma. What a difference a year makes, going from 4-8 to 11-1 with a shot at the Pac-12 Championship, the College Football Playoffs and a Heisman Trophy winner. Coach Harvey Hyde gives his thoughts on the quick and decisive turnaround Riley has made for this Trojan football program, capped by the controlling 38-27 victory over rival Notre Dame Saturday night in the Coliseum. Coach Hyde talks about the huge national exposure this USC football team is receiving with fans excited and alumni fired up about the program, right where he thinks the Trojans should be. For the second week in a row Hyde loved the way this USC defense was able to take away the soul of both the UCLA and Notre Dame programs, running the football. The defense played hard and fast and forced both the Bruins and the Irish to play outside of their comfort zone instead of relying on their bread and butter, run-first mentality. Once again the Trojans were able to take care of the ball and force turnovers, doing just enough to allow the offense to keep ND in the distance. Speaking of the offense, quarterback Caleb Williams continues to mystify and frustrate opposing defenses by showing off his moves and abilities and having fun while he's doing it. Coach Hyde loves that this offense believes it can run the football now and thinks Austin Jones is a great back who runs hard and it really hard to stop. Williams has proven himself to be the most important player in the country when it comes to his team winning and Hyde thinks he is a lock to become USC's eighth Heisman Trophy winner. Looking ahead to Friday night in Las Vegas Coach Hyde thinks USC is a different team now and that the Trojans have come together as a program. The game with Utah in Salt Lake City should be very different than the Pac-12 Championship Game in Las Vegas and Coach Hyde wants to see USC try and take away the Utes ground game and of course limit tight end Dalton Kincaid's contributions this time around. This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham give their thoughts on a very special game for the USC football team, not just for the young Lincoln Riley era, but for the history of the Trojan football program and the Rose Bowl itself. After falling behind 14-0 early on, Riley and the Trojans fought back thanks to the arm of Caleb Williams, the legs of Austin Jones and the turnovers forced by USC's opportunistic defense, none bigger than former five-star Korey Foreman's interception of Dorian Thompson-Robinson during UCLA's last minute comeback attempt. The guys also talk about how injuries impacted the game with the loss of one very important player, running back Travis Dye, and the return of what turned into another very important player, wide receiver Jordan Addison. With Dye out for the remainder of the season Jones knew he would have to step up and he used Dye as inspiration, writing the No. 26 on his wrist in tribute to his fallen teammate. Jones didn't disappoint, rushing 21 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns and adding four catches on as many targets for 57 yards. And after a quiet return against Colorado last week Addison broke out big time, catching 11 passes on 13 targets for 178 yards and a 35-yard touchdown that Williams dropped perfectly into his arms down the right sideline. After the game the rush of emotions from players and coaches out on the field were tangible. The Trojans took the high road during the week and didn't make any comments about their hatred towards UCLA or what they planned to do, unlike DTR, who declared they would put up 60 on USC like they did last year. The guys took all of that in and let their play speak for itself Saturday night and when it was over there was an outpouring of emotion everywhere you looked. Players gathered around the Victory Bell taking their turns to ring it, putting up four's-down hand signals and joining in with the Trojan Marching Band as they played Tusk almost on repeat after the game. There were also long embraces between players and coaches including guys who had difficult journeys in their USC playing career to get to a place this high. Foreman stands out for sure, but guys like Kyle Ford and Tuli Tuipulotu and Calen Bullock who were on this 4-8 squad last year and are enjoying every minute of what Tuipulotu called their "revenge tour." Somehow in Riley's first campaign at Troy he has his squad in the Pac-12 Championship game after his 10-1 overall start and 8-1 in conference and there is even more to play for beyond a conference title. His Trojans, with a win over Notre Dame next weekend, will likely be playing for the program's first College Football Playoff berth in Las Vegas. If USC wins out and finishes Pac-12 champions at 12-1, it seems highly unlikely that the committee would leave the Trojans out. There is still a long way to go, but for all of this to be on the table in Riley's first campaign is remarkable. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! The guys spend a little time recapping how the USC running game got going against the Bulldogs with both Travis Dye and Austin Jones going for over 100 yards and quarterback Caleb Williams rushing for two touchdowns on his own. They also discuss how the defense continued to make big plays with five more sacks and two more turnovers including Wyoming transfer rush end Solomon Byrd getting the sack, fumble and fumble trifecta. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to put a bow on USC's spring football game in front of a Coliseum spring game record crowd of over 33,000 that was shown live nationally on ESPN. Head coach Lincoln Riley wanted to showcase all of the work the players and coaches put in over the past five weeks and in our opinion they accomplished that objective. The entire atmosphere around the Coliseum was extremely welcoming with events for all of the fans in attendance and the product on the field was also intriguing, with two live 15-minute halves of football that gave the feeling of an actual game. The new players were finally introduced to Trojan fans (and the media) and everyone came away from the game with a better understanding of who those players are and how this team could potentially look when they kick off against Rice on September 3. Quarterback Caleb Williams came in with a lot of hype and he delivered, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to his former Oklahoma teammate Mario Williams. Former SEC linebackers Shane Lee and Romello Height also made positive impressions with their play on the field and leadership off of it. Former Pac-12 stars like former Oregon running back Travis Dye, former Stanford running back Austin Jones, former Colorado wide receiver Brenden Rice and former Washington receiver Terrell Bynum all looked good wearing Cardinal and Gold, giving the Trojans more weapons and more depth while draining some of the talent from the rest of the conference. The guys also dig into the pending NCAA Transfer Portal deadline of May 1, looking at some of the players Riley could potentially add before fall camp starts and how fast and furious things could get over the coming weeks and months. Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at podcast@uscfootball.com.
