Julian Velard, Martin Brammer, and me.
Three years is a lot of time (although I'm still attempting to process the fact that this podcast has been an ongoing concern for almost that amount of time). Lives can change dramatically in that time span, and that is the case with the person I'm interviewing, singer/songwriter Julian Velard. Since he and I last spoke for the pod (Episode 30), Julian and his family have pulled stakes and moved twice; first to St. Louis, then to Los Angeles. Julian invested in a piano bar that he then had to back out of, and he also developed vocal nodes that required surgery--a scary proposition for a musician! On top of that, he's also raising two toddlers. Julian and I discuss all of the changes that life has thrown at him recently and how he's handling it all. The discussion is honest and raw, but hopeful. Enjoy!

Julian Velard is an amazing musician who has been heavily influenced by Billy Joel, as is indicated by his digital album entitled, Play Piano Man. Julian, however, has a great sense of humor (like Billy) and subsequently entitled his follow-up album that came out last year, Please Don't Make Me Play Piano Man. For all the joking around we do this was a really terrific sit down with someone who can explain more about the greatness of Billy Joel from a musician's perspective. Later, Julian actually plays the song from the album, Please Don't Make Me Play Piano Man, which was pretty much made for listeners of this podcast.

Hi everyone. I finally left the state and actually flew somewhere. It was quite exciting since everyone's slowly getting out again. But mostly, OMG, finally a story to tell after over a year. SO, the amazing audio I got from the car ride of drunk people screaming at each other, the drunken grandmother, the angry deli meat counter guy AND I found time to do some live stand up with Dave Attell too. Also, my new music pal Julian Velard. Hopefully you'll love him too. What a week. Finally!!! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Julian Velard is a singer, songwriter and pianist from New York City. His latest project, Please Don’t Make Me Play Piano Man, is a recorded attempt at a Broadway musical that’s filled with as much humor as it is with melody. In the past, you may have heard him on the Howard Stern show or on NPR’s Ask Me Another. Julian also currently records the podcast Real Gentlemen of Queens with Brian “B-Ski” Collazo, whose name you might remember from an earlier episode of Detoxicity. In our conversation, Julian wrestles with the idea of defining success on one’s own terms. He also talks about his anti-authoritarian childhood, generational trauma and being a product of your upbringing, not smoothing out his rough edges to be more palatable for the masses, becoming a husband and father himself, and much much more.

In this Bridge episode of Hit Parade, host Chris Molanphy is joined by Julian Velard, musician and inspiration for Chris’s most recent full-length episode, about hitmaker Billy Joel. As a Jewish, New York–based piano player, Julian admits that Joel remains the most relevant touchpoint in his career to this day—and that he’s fought an existential battle with the song “Piano Man.” Chris and Julian wonder how a modern pop landscape might reward (or litigate) Joel’s tendency toward pastiche, and they discuss his ultimate legacy—to critics, to lovers, to haters and other piano men. Next, Chris quizzes a Slate Plus listener with some music trivia, and the contestant turns the tables with a chance to try to stump Chris with a question of his own. Then, Chris teases the upcoming full-length episode of Hit Parade, which will look at the Southward journey of rap music in the late ’90s and early ’00s, spurred by chart-topping Atlanta rappers OutKast. Today's guest is NYC singer/songwriter and musician, Julian Velard! You may have heard his music on Howard Stern or when he's subbed in on NPR's Ask Me Another. Julian talks with Jason about what it's like growing up in NYC, how he didn't originally start in music, how he ended up in music, his appreciation for thoughtful writing, narratives we create with the content we consume, and his process in creating work. They also have a discussion about (awful) people who trade in on a phony identity to push their art. It's interesting! In Your Face-New York had two incredible hosts for our May episode: Emily Nussbaum and Baratunde Thurston. New Yorkers don't do anything in moderation. That includes binge-watching TV. Learn the secrets of this critical skill from Pulitzer Prize winning TV critic for "The New Yorker" Emily Nussbaum who explained how she navigates through 400 hours of programming a week. Baratunde Thurston, NY Times best-selling author of "How to Be Black," explored Roseanne, climate change, piggish politicians and more. Joining them was economist and Morning Joe panelist Steve Rattner on the city's loopy economy and Annabelle Gurwitch, who revisited her days and nights in New York's experimental theater scene. Julian Velard sang one of his New York flavored songs about love and real estate. And writer for the hit TV show "The Americans," Peter Ackerman presented Chapter IV of our serialized novella "Author to Come." Jazz legend Jay Leonhart leads the amazing 1-Train Band.

Quintessentially New York singer-songwriter Julian Velard joins me for a celebration/defense of fellow piano man Billy Joel, and his classic 1976 album 'Turnstiles'. We tell the story of how Turnstiles was Joel's return to New York, the building of his classic band, and his celebration of the city - from modern day standard 'New York State of Mind' to album closer, the apocalyptic 'Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)'. Julian compares the perceptions of Joel in the UK to the US, how he has become like a NYC sports franchise, whether it's a good or bad thing that he hasn't released in a new album in decades and how understanding Billy Joel as a great mimic helps you appreciate his music. My Favorite Album is a podcast on the impact great music has on our lives. Each episode features a guest on their favorite album of all time - why they love it, their history with the album and how it's influenced them. Julian Velard’s performance recorded live at the Historic Deepwells Mansion on September 7, 2016. With a style The Sunday Times calls “catchy but complicated; a surprisingly rare combination,” Julian Velard is piano-pop tunesmith recalling Stephen Sondheim or Randy Newman at the peak of their talents. With 4 albums of original material under his belt, he’s toured internationally alongside the likes of Jamie Cullum, Paul Carrack, and Amy Macdonald. His quirky, native new york, piano-man sound has found its largest audience in Holland, where he headlined Amsterdam’s legendary venue, Paradiso. His comedic timing and musical stylings have made him a regular on The Howard Stern Show and NPR’s Ask Me Another. For more, go to julianvelard.com. Photo courtesy of Howard Greenberg
For this episode of the Sophisticated Marketer’s Podcast, I thought it would be interesting to step away from straight marketing talk and go more to the creative side of things. The topic is story-telling lessons for marketers from a singer songwriter, and my guest is New York piano man Julian Velard. Julian built his music career through engaging storytelling, knowing and interacting directly with his audience, and projecting authenticity—all of which are also building blocks of great marketing. His latest record If You Don’t Like it, You Can Leave is one of my favorite records of the year and the track “No One’s Getting Married Tonight” might be the best pop song I’ve ever heard in my life. Download the podcast to learn how to find the balance between playing it safe and experimenting, how authenticity helps build a loyal fan base, and why Billy Joel and Neil Diamond are good role models for both marketers and musicians.
