In this episode os the Smarticle Podcast, Brandon shares a personal update on his busy schedule and current reflections. He recounts the recent challenges faced by his community in Asheville, NC, in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, particularly the struggle with drinkable water. Brandon discusses attending a Mipso concert at the Orange Peel, which provided a rare, refreshing sense of normalcy and joy despite ongoing difficulties. He emphasizes the importance of finding hope and joy in small moments, such as live music and the first snowfall, and sends warm wishes for Thanksgiving.   00:00 Introduction and Personal Update   00:49 Reflecting on Hope and Joy   01:47 Challenges After Hurricane Helene   02:48 A Night of Normalcy: The Concert Experience   04:43 Finding Hope and Joy in Everyday Moments   05:17 Thanksgiving Wishes and Conclusion   smarticlepodcast@gmail.com   #joy #hope #smarticle #livemusic @Smarticleshow  @BDDoble @larryolson threads.net/@smarticleshow @brand.dobes The Smarticle Podcast  https://www.smarticlepodcast.com/ jOsvUp6X2uy9dNQZMlkB

I'm gonna call this week's Talkhouse Podcast a very special episode, since it's focused on a specific topic and also offers a call to action and hopefully some inspiration for you, the listener. It certainly did that for me, the host guy. Our guests today are frequent Talkhousers Nick Sanborn and Amelia Meath, better known as Sylvan Esso, along with fellow North Carolina musician Libby Rodenbough, who's played with a bunch of bands, most notably Mipso. These three share a home state, North Carolina, which as you know was hit hard by Hurricane Helene just a couple of weeks ago. The devastation that hit the western part of the state didn't seem to get a ton of national media attention, perhaps because Helene was followed so quickly by Hurricane Milton. But as you'll hear at the beginning of this conversation, parts of North Carolina have been affected in ways that will take years to bounce back from. Just days after the storm, Rodenbough—along with David Walker and Grayson Haver Currin and lots of others—conceived of a fundraising effort to feature musician friends, many of whom have deep ties to the area. The idea quickly ballooned into a 135-song compilation called Cardinals at the Window, available on Bandcamp and featuring previously unreleased music from huge names like R.E.M., Phish, Jason Isbell, and Sylvan Esso along with tons of other folks, both native to the area and from well beyond. In just over a week, the compilation has raised over $300,000 to provide direct relief to people whose lives have been turned upside-down by the storm. The area will need lots more than that, of course, to get back on its feet, but it's a heartening reminder that when given the chance to help, people still do, even when folks seem hopelessly divided. That's part of the focus of this chat: Meath, Sanborn, and Rodenbough have been out there helping people over the past couple of weeks, and while they're crushed by the indescribable devastation that towns like Marshall, North Carolina have seen, they're also heartened by the notion that its people have been quick to lend a hand to their neighbors. I found their actions and this conversation inspiring, and I hope you do, too. You can buy the compilation on Bandcamp or check out cardinalsatthewindow.org and lend a hand that way if you can. 0:00 – Intro 2:17 – Start of the chat 4:21 – For all you listeners out there, here's a summary of what's up. 10:23 – How being a touring musician inspires empathy 20:38 – "I've got a generator, and I've got room." 26:24 – Anarchy, anthropology, and helping each other Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Libby Rodenbough, Amelia Meath, and Nick Sanborn for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and definitely search Cardinals at the Window to see how you can help the people of North Carolina. When was the last time you picked up a book or a magazine instead of going to your smart phone or computer to read about music? I admit that, like so many of us these days, my first instinct is to scroll through social media or look at websites. The rise of digital media along with the ubiquity of smart phones has been nothing short of dramatic; the subsequent decline of print and other physical media is also impossible to ignore. Roots music journal No Depression, like so many others, went out of print in the midst of that sea change, although it continued online. Eventually it would reemerge, however, with new ownership and a new format as a quarterly publication, while offering a website covering music news as well as articles, columns and reviews. In an era where the expense of printing a magazine is more and more impossible to recoup, No Depression has managed to do just that. It remains as one of only a handful of music publications, and that is remarkable by itself. This is just part of our story here, though, as we welcome Assistant Editor and nodepression.com director Stacy Chandler to this episode of Southern Songs and Stories. Stacy spoke with me at the end of September, 2023 in Raleigh, North Carolina during the International Bluegrass Music Association's yearly event. Comprised of a wide ranging music industry conference as well as a music festival, the IBMAs, as it is often called, feature music panels geared towards music artists and professionals, showcase events where attendees can get introduced to new artists, and even Tai Chi classes courtesy of Jim Lauderdale. I was not up at 8 a.m. to take Jim's classes, but I did take in as much as I could in the whirlwind week of all things bluegrass, including this conversation with Stacy Chandler as well as bluegrass legend Pete Wernick, and both Steve Mougin and Ben Wright, who will be featured in upcoming episodes here. Stacy Chandler of No Depression interviewed at the IBMA conference 09-30-23 In this episode, we touch on the history of No Depression as well as some of the artists and articles in its current issue, plus we share takeaways from this year's IBMAs while we examine the bigger picture of bluegrass music in 2023. It is a far ranging conversation which focuses on one of the biggest weeks of the year for the genre, the ways bluegrass has changed over the decades, as well as the parallel story of print journalism in the age of smart phones. Songs heard in this episode:“No Depression In Heaven” by The Carter Family“Thirsty” by Mipso, from Book Of Fools, excerpt“Slipknot > Casey Jones” by The Waybacks & Friends, from One Way Or Another, excerpt“Listen To The Radio” by Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle, from More Than A Whisper: Celebrating the Music of Nanci GriffithThank you for visiting us and giving this podcast a listen! In 2012, they co-founded Casting for Hope, a nonprofit that supports women with ovarian and other gynecological cancers, which has since raised over $1,000,000 for its financial and emotional assistance, programming, and fly-fishing retreats.A natural fundraiser, Taylor is also a Morehead-Cain Class Ambassador, collaborating with peers to support the Foundation's annual fundraising campaigns. The episode's intro song is by scholar Scott Hallyburton '22, guitarist of the band South of the Soul. How to listenOn your mobile device, you can listen and subscribe to Catalyze on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Libby Rodenbough's second solo record sees the fiddler and songwriter further stretching from the bluegrass/old time style of her band Mipso. Born in Greensboro, SC, music was just another activity that Libby did along with soccer and going to girl scouts. She played violin in her school's orchestra and thought she'd be a music major, until a college professor let her know that her playing was not up to par with those who studied classical music at a collegial level. She found herself at local bluegrass jam sessions and meeting her future Mipso band members, which led to her discover that music could be a creative outlet and a means of expression. On the new record, Libby is processing and coping with the death of her mother, who was diagnosed with an incurable cancer and died about 5 months before she began recording the album. Created amongst North Carolina musicians, she found herself nestled in a group of people who were also dealing with loss of and serious illness of loved ones. This gave the sessions a heavy and contemplative feel, but it was also comforting to be around friends who felt the existence and love of those who were no longer alive in the room. Libby is open, honest and real. We get into lady-things and cat-things. Hope you enjoy Libby! Join your host, Greg Howard Jr, as he sits down with Bryce from BUFFALO ROSE to talk about their new album Again Again Again.Buffalo Rose is a wildly charismatic six-piece modern folk/Americana band from Pittsburgh, PA. They take the singer-songwriter tradition to a new level by crafting original songs which are emotive, meticulously arranged, and inspired by a world of idiosyncratic influences that never let a dull or predictable moment creep in.The band released their debut album, The Soil and the Seed, in 2018 and established themselves as a vocal, instrumental, and creative force. Since then, Buffalo Rose has dropped two EPs, 2019's Big Stampede and 2020's Borrowed and Blue, opened for the Wood Brothers, Mipso, Pokey LaFarge, Tyler Childers, Infamous Stringdusters, and shared a festival stage with the legendary Sam Bush. The band's upward trajectory continues into 2022 with their latest EP Rabbit, created in collaboration with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tom Paxton, followed by a new full-length LP scheduled for release later in the year.Buffalo Rose's lineup of Lucy Clabby (vocals), Margot Jezerc (vocals), Bryce Rabideau (mandolin), Malcolm Inglis (dobro), Jason Rafalak (upright bass), and Shane McLaughlin (guitar, vocals) pushes itself and each other far beyond their perceived limits and blends their diverse and atypical approach to songwriting with the desire to see how unique a song can get and still feel like home. They use powerful vocal harmonies, strong playing, and an original vision to operate at every possible emotional level and put on dynamic live shows that are unforgettable experiences. They go from up and moving to sad and sweet and back again, bringing the entire audience along. This combination of artistry and enthusiasm makes Buffalo Rose one of the most vital and important groups working today. Rather than play the folk music of the past, the band gleefully combines genres and ideas together to move acoustic music forward to a new, contemporary place without ever losing sight of its roots. Fans of Lake Street Dive, Nickel Creek, and Punch Brothers will find much to like in this crew. Though Micki Balder's been dabbling with music her whole life, it wasn't until 2018 when a friendship's moment of truth unveiled itself in the middle of a Denver coffee shop. She walked home, wrote a song, and has been writing ever since, now a regular at local music venues around her Colorado home. Micki writes from a place of vulnerable storytelling, with people and relationships at the core of her music. She's been compared to modern folk bands like The Weepies and Mipso, along with classic songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon, but she draws inspiration from all over the spectrum — the swing and soul music of her lindy hop days, the earthy folk of Gregory Alan Isakov and Mandolin Orange, the candor and dry humor of John Craigie, or the heartbreak of Sara Bareilles, to name a few. Micki Balder is a folksy singer-songwriter writing sad songs for happy people (and ever so occasionally, happy songs for sad people!). Her music is born from a life-long desire to be a character in a musical, unapologetically singing her feelings for the world through simple and poignant lyrics.Dave sat down with Micki to talk to her about her writing process, alternatives to bridges, using a non-musical friend for creative support, and more! "Today, The Alt-Country Show premieres the scenic, DIY music video for "Parkway Bound." The song can be found on North Carolina artist, Shay Martin Lovette's sophomore release, Scatter & Gather. The album dropped on May 14th and is produced by Joseph Terrell of Mipso. Beautiful arrangements showcase Lovette's crisp vocals and punctuate his songwriting. [youtubelg]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UILkszuP0p4[/youtubelg] Lovette tells us a little bit about the making of the video, recording "Parkway Bound" for the album, and Scatter & Gather as a whole. On the idea behind the video: "I'm super excited to share this video, especially because it was a 100% DIY affair and the footage was captured on iPhones. My partner, Julianna Liegel captured most of the footage and Joseph Terrell, Gabe Anderson, and I filmed the rest. Gabe Anderson also edited the video. The idea for this video was pretty straight forward. “Parkway Bound” was written around the concept of someone leaving their troubles behind and escaping to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I am lucky enough to live less than a mile from the parkway, and have spent countless hours enjoying the mountains, trails, and creeks that can be found in the region so it felt natural to give the video a sort of “day in the life” type vibe. My good friend, Joseph Terrell (Mipso) who produced Scatter & Gather, drove his Jeep Comanche to Boone, North Carolina (where I'm based) and we hit the Blue Ridge Parkway for a full day of cruising to different scenic overlooks, rambling down trails, eating biscuits, and rock hopping to various waterfalls in the area.  By the end of the day we were exhausted but as we watched the sun disappear behind the Blue Ridge Mountains we were thankful for the journey." On the making of the song with Joseph: "'Parkway Bound' was recorded live at the Rubber Room Studio in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with my dream string band accompanying me and taking this tune to a beautifully folky place. Joseph Terrell (Mipso) sang harmony vocals, Aaron Ballance played Dobro, Libby Rodenbough (Mipso) played Fiddle, Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse) played mandolin, and Wood Robinson (Mipso) played upright bass. We only played the song twice and the second take was the keeper!" On the album: "Scatter & Gather is a collection of songs that I wrote on acoustic guitar at home in Boone, North Carolina and then fleshed out in the studio with members of Mipso, my band, and some very talented special guests like Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse). I had so much fun in the studio kicking ideas around with Joseph Terrell until each song got to a place that we both could be excited about. Joseph and I both have backgrounds in roots music but embrace the idea of experimenting with those roots so it was our goal to let both aspects shine through on this album." Be sure to listen to the podcast which features multiple tracks from Shay Martin Lovette's new album. The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week, we feature one of the leading roots-pop bands working today: Mipso. An affable and endlessly-creative quartet formed in Chapel Hill, NC, they are made up of fiddle player Libby Rodenbough, mandolinist Jacob Sharp, guitarist Joseph Terrell, and bassist Wood Robinson. Despite the anxious mood of their swing-state home base, it's quite an exciting time for the band. Z. was able to catch up with Libby and Jacob (via Zoom of course) to discuss their lushly orchestrated self-titled record which just dropped last week; and if you walk down 8th Avenue in Nashville this week, you might catch a billboard with their sheepish grins writ large in the sky. How did they get here? It's hard to find a group where every member can effortlessly sing lead and write genre-bending songs that fit seamlessly on six acclaimed albums and counting in under ten years. Well, maybe the resurgent chart-toppers Fleetwood Mac? Earlier standout records like the breakout Dark Holler Pop, produced by fellow North Carolinian Andrew Marlin (Mandolin Orange,) and Edges Run, which features a veritable online hit in the broken-voiced, emotional “People Change,” show how they appeal to not only folk fest-loving moms and dads, but also their edgier kids who appreciate their subtly subversive turns of phrase and playful gender-ambiguous neon-tinted wardrobe. As Z. found out during his conversation with Libby and Jacob, the band nearly broke up after a series of grueling 150-show-a-year runs, a scary car wreck and the pressure of putting out Edges Run for their rapidly growing fanbase. The forced slower pace of this last year and a half has been a gift in several ways - allowing the group to catch their breath and hole up to write more collaboratively than ever. The shimmering sonic backdrop that the gifted producer and musician Sandro Perri was able to bring to the sessions at the Echo Mountain studio in Asheville really makes the songs feel like they could exist in any era. You wouldn't be alone if you heard the connection between their honey-hooked newest record with the timeless mellow-with-a-hint-of-menace hits of the 1970s (looking at you James Taylor and Carly Simon) - as songs like “Never Knew You Were Gone” show off Terrell's gift for gently asking the deepest questions, like where he might go when he transitions to the other side in a “silvery fire,” or the sardonically nostalgic “Let A Little Light In,” which wonders if the soft-focused images we have of the peaceful boomtime 1990s (when Mipso was growing up) could use some real scrutiny. Rodenbough's silky fiddle work stars throughout - and her courageous, vulnerable lead vocal on “Your Body” may be the most memorable moment on the new work. Stick around to the end of the episode to hear mandolinist Jacob Sharp introduce his favorite contribution, “Just Want To Be Loved.”

For episode 13 of the podcast, Ken catches up with Libby Rodenbough. While many may know her from her excellent band Mipso, today she is here to dig into her into her fantastic solo record, “Spectacle of Love.” The album is most certainly not a collection of Libby-penned Mipso songs; this is a different artistic expression. On the first song, “How Come You Call Me,” it feels like Libby is drawing on Aimee Mann more than Guy Clark or Emmylou Harris. And the songs that follow represent a wide range of sensibilities, from synth-driven songs to the entrancing instrumental, “Under the U-Bahn.” The album brings different sonic explorations together through lyrics that explore the distances between ourselves and others and how we reconcile the fact that our relationships are always in flux. Mipso is born from North Carolina’s broad range of disparate musical influences, their distinctly unique sound is an undeniable alchemy of the historical musical traditions of the rural south and their progressive home of Chapel Hill. A discernible and rising force in the upstart musical genre known as Americana, Mipso’s music is lush and forward moving. A tender, harmony-laden river runs through the band’s core, but the rocky outcroppings change with every album outing. Appalachia melds with modern alt-country, hints of folk-rock are leavened with a sly and subversive sense of humour, and underneath it all is a genuine and moving passion for the ever-evolving traditions of Americana. With the recent release of the band’s fifth album, Edges Run (April 2018/Anti-Fragile Music), Mipso continues the complex dance of looking back and moving forward with grace and beauty.

The band Mipso is a group that never anticipated being as successful or as long lived as they became. It is a band that mandolin player Jacob Sharp called unlikely, because none of the members studied music when they met in college at UNC-Chapel Hill, and none of them thought music was going to be a career -- nothing beyond their initial love of other bands, and of playing together. If Mipso is an unlikely band, it is also quite an exceptional one, now set to release their fifth album (sixth if you count their Mipso Trio debut). They were in the middle of recording their new record during the time we got together in the small city of Elkin, NC. In this episode of Southern Songs and Stories, we talk with members Libby Rodenbough, Joseph Terrell and Wood Robinson as well as Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive, who is soon to tour with Mipso in her project with Benjamin Lazar Davis. Folk Alley Sessions

During an exclusive Folk Alley Session that North Carolina progressive sting band, Mipso, did for Folk Alley, the group eloquently talks about "the how and why" of their evolution as a band and the decision to push their musical boundaries in the first place.

Folk Alley Sessions

(this Sessions originally posted December 20, 2018)“At this point, we are wide open, I think.” That's how the band Mipso talks about the evolution of their sound. Starting as a tried-and-true string band at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill several years ago, the band, earlier this year, released their fourth album, Edges Run. And it was with this album that they decided they no longer wanted to limit themselves to, as they say, “just strings.” Edges Run is a record that lets this group of talented young musicians experiment and push the boundaries of their sound. And, during the exclusive session they did for Folk Alley at Beehive Productions Studios in Saranac Lake, New York, this group eloquently talks about how and why they decided to push those musical boundaries in the first place.

Wednesday night’s gathering of the Roots clan will be an opportunity to reflect on the life and legacy of Cowboy Jack Clement, the kindly and eccentric genius songwriter and producer who passed away in 2013. One of our guests, the songwriting entrepreneur Matt Urmy, was a great friend and protégé of Jack and arrives with an album Jack produced before his studio burned up in a bad fire. For a while, we explored the idea of a night formally paying tribute to Cowboy Jack but the right mix didn’t come together. That said, looking at this week’s lineup, with its variety and individuality, I feel sure Cowboy would have loved this week’s show. And I’m sure you will too. WKNC Interviews

When Mipso joined me in the studio they were preparing for their album release show at Haw River Ballroom, a momentous occasion that combines one of the state's swiftest rising acts with arguably the finest venue in the area. When Joseph, Wood and Jacob joined me to chat about Dark Holler Pop, their sophomore full-length album that was released in late October, the conversation was free-flowing an all-encompassing. Ranging from the differences in life as a full-time student versus a full-time musician to their tour of Asia and their thoughts on the bluegrass uprising, I had a blast chatting with these immensely talented musicians. To top it all off they performed a few tracks in-studio from Dark Holler Pop, giving an intimate portrayal of the band's calm but robust sound. Croons and hollers line the tracks of Dark Holler Pop, and as they performed these songs in-studio they held nothing back.If you're looking for an immersive conversation that delves into the formation and future of this stellar North Carolina act, then look no further than this Carolina Grown session. Though we're rather early into this show, I must say that this has by far been my segment, so see what you missed or relive the experience below!
