My Music Podcast: Mango in Euphoria – Punk, Pop, and Passionate TruthsIn this raw, joyful, and occasionally chaotic episode of My Music, host Graham Coath welcomes the bold, genre-blending artist Mango in Euphoria – a singer-songwriter whose name is as juicy as her sound. They dive into everything from the origins of Mango's name (inspired by her favourite fruit and a euphoric moment of rebellion), to her journey from France to London, where she found the freedom to fully express herself both musically and personally.Expect deep chats about:The emotional highs and lows of performing live (including crying on stage and still being cheered for it),Why she blends punk attitude with electronic beats,What heartbreak sounds like when you're a songwriter with no filter,The power of representation, pansexuality, and creating safe spaces at gigs,And her views on the music industry, DIY culture, and why she probably won't be repping at Eurovision any time soon.Plus, Graham and Mango bond over sweaty gigs, classroom chaos, and the importance of underwear-based merch. With a new EP on the horizon and a Eurodance single dropping soon, Mango is an artist on a mission to shake things up – unapologetically, emotionally, and with a whole lot of heart.

Big feelings for big rooms with the Club Heart Broken founder. Club Heart Broken is perhaps a misnomer. The party and label, founded in Cologne by MALUGI, may take its name from one of life's tougher emotions, but the vibe is all about unfettered, unadulterated joy. It's a state of mind its founder fully embodies—he's called himself the "happiest man in dance music." (We tried fact-checking this, but watching him perform seems proof enough.) Club Heart Broken's motto is simple: a party should be fun. A "party for lovers, loners and losers," the crew also made up of ferrari rot, SURF 2 GLORY and fellow maximalist Marlon Hoffstadt, represent the sound of young Berlin in the 2020s, notorious as they are beloved. Since relocating from Cologne, the party has snapped the German's capital infamously serious techno stereotype with its anything-goes, unpretentious music policy. It's made him and Hoffstadt especially in-demand worldwide—queues used to extend out of the door of Watergate and across Oberbaumbrücke. Musically, MALUGI is the most eclectic in the crew. His metaphorical record bag carries a lot of label material, from zingy Eurodance to upbeat pumpers, but also plenty of steppy, tuff UK bass music. Releases from Main Phase and Interplanetary Criminal, the likes of dubplate label ec2a, and even the odd Big Ang record pepper his sets, much of which you'll hear here. MALUGI's RA Podcast is a window into the more house-y side of his sound. From bubbling garage to chunky chords, RA.981 is a testament to MALUGI's belief: the best parties should leave you grinning, not crying. @malugienergy Find the tracklist and interview at ra.co/podcast/981.

Maximalist house from the sibling duo at the forefront of Berlin's new wave. Berlin is built on dance music. But of the many DJs who live, work and play there, few represent the evolution in the city's club culture like Tania and Dominik Humeres-Correa, AKA S-candalo. If the city was once governed by the tyranny of minimal, the post-pandemic era has cemented its reputation as the spot for "more-is-more" club soundtracks. It's still house and techno, but the chords are big, the drums are big and the basslines are even bigger. Nowadays, S-candalo are firm favourites at hotspots across the German capital, from Panorama Bar to Multisex and Radiant Love (not forgetting La Noche, their own burgeoning party). The duo find rich inspiration in '90s-era Latin house, a sound that takes New York house and incorporates rolling percussion from Latin genres such as samba, popularised on labels like Cutting Records and Strictly Rhythm (there's not one but two records from the latter in this mix). RA.956 fittingly lands at the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month in the US (more on that to come) and it's a resolutely fun affair. The duo's RA Podcast has got drive, sultry vocals and enough bounce to make you want to keep dancing way beyond the 90-minutes, marrying percussion-heavy house and ballroom with trance-inflected Eurodance from the '90s and early 2000s. (Oh, and a Shakira moment.) Genres aside, the duo's musical raison d'etre is pleasure. Perhaps the real scandal here is how it took us so long to get them on the series. @s-candalo @thc_dj @dhc_bln Read more at ra.co/podcast/956

Following their launch in 1991 with debut single "Get Ready For This", Eurodance duo 2 Unlimited enjoyed a string of more than a dozen hits around the world. What does that have to do with Stock Aitken Waterman? Well, in the UK, the act fronted by Ray Slijngaard and Anita Doth was signed to PWL Records at a time when the Hit Factory's in-house productions were often struggling on the charts. Techno tracks like "Twilight Zone", "Maximum Overdrive", "Let The Beat Control Your Body", "The Real Thing", "Tribal Dance" and chart-topper "No Limit" were the sound of the future, while, as we've seen, more traditional pop/dance tunes were having a tough time of it. In this bonus episode, we explore the success PWL enjoyed with 2 Unlimited and what it meant for the working relationship between Pete Waterman and Mike Stock. Ray joins us to share his perspective on the rise of 2 Unlimited and the approach PWL took with the duo's tracks in the UK, initially using instrumental versions rather than ones with Ray's raps on them. He also discusses his personal and professional relationships with Anita and producers Jean-Paul de Coster and Phil Wilde, and the current status of 2 Unlimited.Support the Show.Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Since we're reporting on the ground from Malmo, our regularly scheduled episode will come out at the end of the week to coincide with Eurovision 2024! Until then we'd love to share two previous episodes we think set this year's contest up well. This is our episode about Sweden's takeover of Eurovision and global pop, in advance of them hosting this year's contest. Dr. Alban, Hello Afrika, One Love (26:30), Deborah Ann Woll, (HBO's True Blood, Netflix's Daredevil, (37:13) This week, we're talking about the Swedish domination of pop music. How this tiny country took over one of the world's largest entertainment industries is a story with a ton of twists and turns-- and, of course, Eurovision is at the center of it. First we deep dive into that history and try to figure out what it is about Sweden that has made it such a pop power house. Then we talk to EuroDance star Dr. Alban, who has sold over 16 million records worldwide, and who was part of the original group of artists at Cheiron studios-- the hit factory that launched Ace of Base, The Backstreet Boys, 'NYSNC, and Britney Spears. Finally, we sit down with Deborah Ann Woll, star of True Blood and Daredevil, for a game we're calling "Victory is Oh, So Swede," where we try to figure out what gives those Swedish Eurovision songs their extra edge. I've been wanting to do a Freestyle mixtape for a while now. I have cool memories of this music booming out of little Suzuki Samurais and Honda Civics in the late '80s during family vacations to the East and West Coasts. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of archived radio DJ mixes from the late '80s and was inspired to pull together some tasty Rap, Freestyle, Electro, Post-Disco, and House for this tape. I only recently became aware of the original version of 'Show Me Love' and found an unopened copy on Discogs, so the version at the end of this set is a genuine needle drop. A brief introduction to the Freestyle genre: Emerging in the early 1980s in the United States and originating in the urban Latino communities of New York City and Miami, Freestyle was characterized by a blend of synthesizer and drum-heavy electronic beats, Latin percussion, and emotive, often dramatic singing. Notable artists include Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Stevie B, and Exposé. Internationally, the impact of Freestyle was more nuanced. In Europe, while synth-pop, new wave, and house music were more dominant, elements of Freestyle influenced the emerging Eurodance scene. Meanwhile, in Japan, Freestyle was overshadowed by genres like J-Pop and city pop, along with various other forms of Western music. While its core fanbase resided in cities like New York and Miami, Freestyle's popularity was embraced in club scenes nationwide and received considerable radio play, particularly on urban contemporary, dance, and R&B stations during its peak in the late 1980s. This era marked the height of Freestyle's run in the charts with songs like 'Fascinated' by Company B, 'Crush on You' by The Jets, 'Point of No Return' by Exposé, 'Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)' by Samantha Fox, and 'Tell It to My Heart' by Taylor Dayne. Freestyle's influence persisted into the early '90s, notably in Eurodance with international hit songs like 'Rhythm of the Night' by Corona and 'Be My Lover' by La Bouche, which exhibited similarly catchy choruses and uptempo rhythms, but with much denser and slicker production. While in the Latin music scene, especially in the early to mid-1990s, Latin Freestyle, a subgenre, saw artists like Selena infusing traditional Latin sounds with Freestyle's electronic beats and rhythms. Freestyle remains a distinctive and memorable part of 1980s music culture, representing a unique fusion of sounds that captured the energy and diversity of its era. Fantasy 3 - It's Your Rock Pretty Tony - Fix It in the Mix Freestyle - Don't Stop the Rock Trinere - How Can We Be Wrong Sequal - It's Not Too Late Jennette - You Turn Me On Olga - Play Another Song for Me Pretty Poison - Nightime Newtrament - London Bridge is Falling Down (Dub Mix) Beat Street - Breaker's Revenge Bohannon - Let's Start the Dance III (Instrumental Club) Patrice Rushen - Number One (Instrumental Version) N.O.I.A. - The Rule to Survive Import #1 - Set It Off (Party Rock) Connie - Rock Me Lidell Townsell, M T F - Nu Nu (Radio Apella) Robin Stone - Show Me Love (New York Mix) If you're listening on Apple Podcasts, please shoot me a quick 5-star rating, and a positive review if you're feeling generous. Tom Walker (comedian, bigsofttitty.png) returns to the show in-studio and for only the second time in show history, we don't reveal the blockee in the show's title, so as to keep the suspense intact. It's a great Block Tale though and involves a recent meeting gone awry. What does not go awry is this episode, as Tom teaches us all about the Gratitude Cafe in Los Angeles and we discuss bad cocktail names, Tom and John performing on a show together, Jar Jar Binks impressions, and we learn about Australia's worst reality show: Thorpie's Angels. Plus, Tom is sick of Twitter (but finds a very funny video from a Street Fighter tournament), Stefan is back on his Toyman BS, and John is still loving that EuroDance video parody. If you want John and Stefan's rhythm to be glad, you can head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every damn month. Last week, Girl God joined the show to discuss the Canadian kids' game show "Uh Oh!" with us, and it was a real doozy. Plus you'll get access to our entire back catalogue of well over 100 episodes, merch discounts, access to our Discord, and lots more. Head on over and support your beautiful Blocked Boys today! Tom Walker is a comedian whose podcast, "bigsofttitty.png" is available wherever you get your pods.
