Any consistent listener of the cast would know at this point that I must really dig this Close To You joint and yes. Yes I do. Stevie Wonder on the talkbox being by far my favorite version. Frank Ocean mix second, Sinatra third. The original is almost unrecognisable after hearing those three. At least to my knowledge the original was Burt Bacharach if I'm not mistaken. I'm not doing research this is just regular knowledge that a C-list internet disc jockey has bouncing around in my musically inclined melon. The Bacharach version, God bless him, I highly doubt that the lady he was singing about was ever satisfied. He has tons of heart but, sweet mercy.. That delivery, I can tell he hikes his pants and would never think to bless a lovely young woman with a plate of cheese fries at Outback Steakhouse and possibly see what happens after like an honorable gentleman. I'm absolutely out of my mind and have a goose loose. It's all good though baby. Tons of fresh ammunition for the next installment. Found some awesome old 45's.. Sinatra, Tony Bennett, an Ozzy Osbourne and a super sick find that I will keep a surprise til next episode. Til then, I remain your most honorable host. The Capt. This week, Megan fills Evan and Dave in on CLOSE TO YOU (1:31), starring Elliot Page (who also co-wrote the story) in Dominic Savage's tender and emotional indie drama as Sam, who journeys home for his father's birthday, his first trip to his hometown since his transition. We follow that up with SKINCARE (9:18), Austin Peters's thriller starring Elizabeth Banks as Hope, an esthetician with a line of products about to hit the marketplace. Unfortunately, another esthetician opens a location directly across from her, and wouldn't you know? Someone steals Hope's identity and messes with her in a way that could tank her product launch. We wish we could say we loved it. (We didn't.) Finally, Megan and Dave talk about ALIEN: ROMULUS (32:23), the Fede Álvarez-directed sci-fi horror interquel starring Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. It takes the ALIEN series in a different direction, sorta, if not for all the derivative plot conventions and it lifts from just about every other ALIEN film. It has its moments (and it's better than Ridley Scott's last two hack jobs), but it's a mixed bag. Over on Patreon, we talk about the 1989 teen satire HEATHERS, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, in honor of co-star Shannen Doherty.

Ahead of the GAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival, Gemma Creagh talks to Festival Director Greg Thorpe and Dominic Savage, Director of Close To You, starring co-writer and producer Elliot Page, which closes this year's festival. Close To You Elliot Page gives a delicate but defiantly star turn in his first feature role as a trans man since coming out in 2020. Sam (Page) is facing a nerve-shredding experience familiar to many queer people – returning home to a family occasion after a period of estrangement. What begins as a gentle reunion drama soon unravels, and in his time-out from familial stresses, Sam runs into a former hometown lover, Katherine, played by the brilliant Hillary Baack. The nostalgia of their younger days threatens to sweep them both away, but the world has changed and so have they. Close To You's improvised script and close co-production with the actors and director Dominic Savage is a model of queer film-making that lends the piece an intimate natural realism that is such a deep pleasure to sink into. The GAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival runs 1 – 5 August 2025. https://www.gaze.ie/ https://filmireland.net/

And so this had to come together, at last. Oh, and I live in Tennessee, where anyone can open carry any weapon anywhere they like. Oy. THE CARPENTERS – A SONG FOR YOU with special guest Lucy O'Brien. This interview took place before and after we listened to the vinyl album. Up to the release of A Song for You, the Carpenters' success had seemed an awesome if somewhat fluky phenomenon, built on prodigious talent, some beautifully crafted pop sensibilities, and a very fortunate choice of singles -- their albums Close To You and Carpenters, though they were top-sellers, both seemed just a bit thrown together.  Then came A Song for You, a seemingly unified concept album written and recorded during a frantic period of concert activity, and brimming with lovely musical ideas even more lovingly executed, laced with good humour, and enough hits of its own to have established any artist's career on its own. And even in between the hits, the album was built on material that could have made a whole career for anyone.  The duo's best album and a classic in its own right. With special guest LUCY O'BRIEN. Lucy O'Brien's new biography is Lead Sister: The Story Of Karen Carpenter. She has written critically acclaimed books about Dusty Springfield, Madonna, Annie Lennox as well as She Bop: The Definitive History Of Women In Popular Music. So much work went into this mix, I almost missed the deadline… but, hey, it is to to say goodby to the real G.O.A.T., the one and only Burt Bacharach, our god of pop music! Here is my tribute to maybe the most important musician in my life. I tried to not only include my favourite Bacharach tracks (too many anyway..) but amazing, unusual covers of his music, most of them with a lot of Soul (and a Morrissey cover…). Also in here, lots of musicians (old and newer) talk about him, you will find interview bits of Burt himself, Hal David, Noel Gallagher, Richard Carpenter, Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costello, etc. Like Noel mentions in this mix, even if you have never heard of Burt (fool….), you definitely not only know a lot of his songs/compositions, but for some strange reason you can also sing along to them, because they are/were everywhere. They are part of the backbone of modern pop music all over the world. I am pretty sure that if there are aliens watching/listening to us, they not only love his music, but they probably will come one day to take him home with them in their ship (a balloon, as we all know now…). Unfortunately, it's too late for that now… ! His songs float by all of us when we are young, often in the background on our mum's kitchen radio, but as soon as we become older, experience the big feelings of love, heartbreak, loss, sadness, melancholy… those little songs suddenly make so much sense. They are (and will be) the best remedy against all low times! And I can't thank Burt Bacharach enough for making my shit times bearable. His songbook with lyricist Hal David is a monumental catalogue of pop music, and their longtime partnership with singer Dionne Warwick produced dozens of standards, many written specifically for her voice. We discuss the highs and lows of their work together: smashing the colour barrier between pop and r&b, their innovative song structures, their chart hits and deep cuts, and the disastrous movie musical Lost Horizon (1973) that led to the end of their partnership. She shares a story behind the album A Woman Like Me and explains the way she writes songs. She is also going to start her podcast about consciousness, awareness, and mental health. Songs you can listen to in this episode are: Feels Like Forever, Only You, and Close To You from her most recent album A Woman Like Me.Episode Highlights03:35 – I believe that all of my favorite artists have influenced my sound. My inner journey is directly connected to my music. The more comfortable I get with myself, the more comfortable I am writing lyrics that are true to myself. 18:19 – We are taking it a little slower; we've had a couple of shows, and they've been amazing. But this is OK for me because I'm working on a new album. 21:33 – A Woman Like Me is about a journey from the outside to the inside. If you are not right inside, then the outside is not going to be right. 30:29 – Normally, the last thing that I write is the bridge. If I cannot come up with the bridge, the song is not ready for the world. 39:23 – ‘Bout it or Doubt it – the Movies category. Lindsey shares why she does not like horror films and why she likes The Godfather. ContactFresh Coast Jazz Festival

Kara Isaac's contemporary inspirational romances are rom-com adventures designed to appeal to a wide audience of readers – even those who don't share the same faith walk. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and today Wellington author Kara talks about combining writing laugh out loud funny love stories with her other life as pastor's wife, mother of three  and public servant. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode Why Google Street View is a writer's best friend The part Bridget Jones Diary played in getting her started How a "Wellington Mum" got published by one the Big Five  How long she was writing before she got published The two authors she is binge reading right now And the mind attitude that's the secret to her success Where to find Kara Isaac: Website: www.karaisaac.com Facebook and Twitter https://www.facebook.com/KaraIsaacAuthor/ and @karaisaac What follows is a "near as" but not word for word transcript of our conversation, with links to important points. Jenny: And now, here's Kara.  Hello there Kara, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Kara: Thanks so much for having me Jenny: Beginning at the beginning . . . .Was there a "Once Upon A Time" moment when you realised you had to write fiction or your life would somehow be incomplete? Was there a catalyst? Kara: I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember so I've always loved books my whole life. I'd never really thought about being a writer until I was in my twenties and I was having a coffee with a friend. I was complaining to her about how I wanted to read more Christian fiction but I just couldn't find anything that I personally related to. There was a lot of fiction - historical set romances and at that time 'Chick Lit' was coming on to the market following Bridget Jones' Diary and a lot of books were coming out that featured a 'thirty something year old heroine' desperate to get married and settled down   - and that wasn't my cup of tea either. She looked at me and said "If you can't find anything you like, why don't you just write something that you would". I laughed it off, but then six months later I was on holiday and had some time on my hands. I thought I'd open a Word document and have a crack and see what happens, and I never really expected that I'd fall in love with writing and creating characters and stories, but I did. That was the beginning of 2006, so I haven't really looked back since then. Jenny: That's fantastic. That's now more than 10 years ago which is quite a reasonable apprenticeship isn't it? Kara: Yes, it's certainly felt like it that's for sure! Jenny: You've so far published three books in the contemporary inspirational romance genre as “stand alone” novels – not strictly speaking a series, but cleverly linked in the way they are set up – They all feature “international couples” – one either Kiwi or Australian and the other American  and the conflicts those boundaries create – and the first two have common characters . . .. Firstly what made you choose that genre? And secondly that “set up?” Kara: There's a couple of things in there - I guess the thing that particularly draws me to inspirational romantic comedies is I love books and stories that make me laugh, and I guess the inspirational component is I like stories that explore questions of faith and life and why people make the choices that they do, and how that affects them. That was the right marriage for me as a writer; maybe one day I'll branch out somewhere different. It wasn't a clever marketing thing when I started writing Close To You. I chatted with an editor at a writers conference and she'd asked me "have you ever thought of writing a story set in New Zealand around the Lord of The Rings?"  I thought in my head, that's one of the craziest ideas I've heard in my entire life because the previous eight years,
