The Lumineers joined KROQ hosts Klein and Ally, along with a room full of lucky listeners, at Audacy's Helpful Honda Sound Space in Los Angeles to celebrate the release of the group's 2025 album, Automatic, and give us a taste of what's ahead on their upcoming world tour. The Lumineers recently revealed details surrounding the highly-anticipated North American leg of their Automatic 2025 World Tour -- with dates beginning July 3. As the band gets set to drop by stadiums, arenas, and amphitheaters across the US and Canada through mid-October in celebration of their 2025 album Automatic, Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz gave fans a taste of what's to come with a special set recorded live in Los Angeles. Sitting down to chat with one half of the duo, Wesley Schultz, during the event, Klein began by questioning him about a crime that is mentioned in their track “Same Old Song,” which he believes took place when the band last visited KROQ. “Wesley, are we responsible for you losing your mom's guitar forever?” Klein wondered. “It was 2011 actually, so you guys wouldn't have played us back then, sadly,” Wes explains. “We were filming a takeaway show, where you would show up and it was one take, so you couldn't edit, and you couldn't fix anything. We went into La Brea Park by the tar pits and we -- I think the only instrument we have is a mandolin -- so we're playing that song ‘Classy Girls,' and our friend was filming us. We came back to the minivan and it was like 3:30 in the afternoon, and the trunk had been just popped open… Anyway, we were just confused. Like, we opened up the trunk and we're like, ‘Oh, where are they?' That's funny, where are the instruments?' Because it's just daytime you don't think, and it's a really busy street. Yeah, they took everything, but they left the keys behind, meaning they left the keyboard because that was too heavy for them, or too big. Too worthless. I don't know.” “I wrote a lot of those songs on my mom's guitar that they took, so it was kind of sad,” he adds. “We filled out a police report and on the top right, it has your number of the day of crime and we were like 1,472 of that, and the cop was like, ‘You're not gonna see that.'” “The other cool thing,” Wes continues, “We had three more weeks to tour and everyone along that tour lent us instruments. I remember one of the cities, the guy from the 4 Non Blondes who played acoustic guitar gave us a guitar for that gig. Everywhere we went with a cello, with guitars, with bass guitars… You know, a side of people that were so kind for the rest, and we were again nobodies. They [KROQ] weren't playing us,” he jokes. “I don't know if I said that before.” Touching on the new record, Automatic, which arrived Valentine's Day 2025, Wes tells us the band didn't initially intend on releasing the album on the lover's holiday, “But in our first music video for this album, on ‘Same Old Song,” Jerry [Fraites] was drumming with roses that were attached to his sticks.” Followers quickly surmised that the band was alluding to a release date. “They were actually correct,” he says, “because it was coming out on Valentine's Day, but no we're not that well planned out.” But don't be fooled, Wesley definitely has a romantic side, explaining how his wife, Brandy, technically co-wrote the album track “Dead Sea.” “She said, ‘You're like my dead sea,'” he says. “We were just dating at the time and I was like, ‘Did you come up with that?' Then on Valentine's Day, I actually gave her a demo of that and I snuck it into a box of chocolates. I cut out a CD shape, put the CD and hid it in the box. I did it to kind of roast her, because she said she hates people that give boxes of chocolates as a gift. We were apart, I was recording, and I sent it to her, and she didn't even open it. She's so mad, like ‘He doesn't listen to me,' and I was like, ‘Well did you open it?' She turned around, opened it up, and ...

The Lumineers are back with their 5th album Automatic, a record that sees the band embracing childlike wonder, live off the floor recording and new perspectives on modern times. Dive in as Lana interviews Welsey Schultz going song by song through the record.
Could ongoing BRT construction mean the end of the road for long-standing Colfax businesses? The public transit project has been in the works for years, but the real impacts of sidewalk closures and disappearing parking spots are finally hitting home. Producer Paul Karolyi and host Bree Davies are joined by Westword staff writer Jason Heller to talk through his reporting on how business owners are balancing concerns with the prospect of better bus lanes. Plus, they dig into more news of the week, including The Lumineers' new album and frontman Wesley Schultz's guide to Denver, gender-affirming care for kids returning to area hospitals, and the questionable names being thrown around for Denver's new National Women's Soccer League franchise. Jason talked about new music from Plague Garden. Bree mentioned a 2013 New York Times article on The Lumineers and budget cuts impacting childcare programs across the state. Paul talked about the “Watershed Alliance" for Sloans Lake. What do you think about The Lumineers? Are they a distinctly Denver band to you? Do you have a great Lumineers story to share? US indie folk band The Lumineers are back. Automatic is the group's fifth studio album, and has members Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz travelling “new sonic and thematic terrain” after twenty years of partnership. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two powerhouses in what I guess you might call modern indie-folk, though it's a lot more than that: Gregory Alan Isakov and Jeremiah Fraites. Fraites is, along with Wesley Schultz, a founding member of the Lumineers, the band whose simple-yet-powerful take on folky Americana has been met with pretty massive success over the past couple of decades. The band's catalog goes deeper than massive hits like “Ho Hey” and “Stubborn Love,” songs you've probably heard even if you're not super familiar with the band. The Lumineers' latest album is 2022's Brightside, but that's not Fraites' latest: He just released his second solo album of intriguing, fantastic instrumental piano pieces—a big departure from the sound of his main gig, but great nonetheless. It's called Piano Piano 2—you can probably guess what the first one was called—and it stretches into even more cinematic territory than the first. Plus, it features a guest vocal from the other half of today's conversation. Gregory Alan Isakov may seem like an overnight sensation, but the Colorado-based singer-songwriter has been plugging away—sometimes quietly—for nearly two decades, building a fanbase for his intimate songs over the course of seven albums. His latest, Appaloosa Bones, came out late last year, and as you'll hear in this chat, the songs ended up being a bit more fleshed out than those on his past records. He's on tour now, and he's featured on the new Noah Kahan single as well. So yeah, kind of a big deal. Oh, and as I mentioned a minute ago, he collaborated with Jeremiah Fraites recently, on a cover of Radiohead's classic “No Surprises.” Check out a bit of the magic they wrung from making the song their own. In this chat, Fraites and Isakov talk about how songwriting never gets easier—sorry, budding songwriters—about Isakov's teenage obsession with the Nintendo game Metroid, and what that has to do with music, and about finding intimate sounds in massive places like Red Rocks, aka the best venue in the universe. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jeremiah Fraites and Gregory Alan Isakov for chatting. Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth --- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The Lumineers are an American alternative folk band based in Denver, Colorado. The founding members are Wesley Schultz (lead vocals, guitar) and Jeremiah Fraites (drums, percussion, piano). Schultz and Fraites began writing and performing together in Ramsey, New Jersey, in 2005. Cellist and vocalist Neyla Pekarek joined the band in 2010, and was a member until 2018.[1] The Lumineers emerged as one of the most popular folk-rock/Americana artists during the revival of those genres,[2]their popularity growing in the 2010s.[3] They are known for their energetic live shows and several international hit singles, including "Ho Hey", "Stubborn Love", "Ophelia", "Angela" and "Cleopatra".[4]The band has become one of the top touring bands in the United States[5] and is also popular in other countries.[6] The Lumineers have released four albums on American independent label Dualtone Records (Dine Alone in Canada and Decca/Universal worldwide).[7] Their self-titled first album was released in 2012 and peaked at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200.[8] It has been certified triple platinum in the U.S. and Canada,[9] platinum in the UK[10] and Ireland, and gold in Australia.[11] Their second album, Cleopatra, was released in 2016 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and also on the Canadian and British album charts. It is currently certified platinum in the U.S.[12] Their third album, titled III, was released on September 13, 2019[13] and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Their fourth album, Brightside, was released on January 14, 2022.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Robot Monster over Zoom video!Rock duo Robot Monster has released their newest single “OUT”, streaming now here. The song comes on the heels of their debut full-length album which was released earlier this year. Both were produced by Grammy award-winning Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Kaleo, Tom Waits, City and Colour) at King's studio, The LBT, just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. The band's previous single, “Get Somewhere” saw Robot Monster featured on Pittsburgh contemporary station T102; fans flooded the station with calls with over 7k calls following the band's on-air interviews. The song has also been featured on Spotify's Rock Hard and Apple Music's All New Rock & Breaking Rock playlists. Last May Robot Monster played their first show ever, serving as direct support for Stone Temple Pilots at the Palladium in New York City. The band is on tour now with The Bronx and Drug Church, with upcoming stops in Charlotte, Atlanta, and Memphis. For a full list of dates, please see below or visit: www.robotmonstermusic.com.About Robot Monster: In 2020, guitarist Will Brennan and drummer Logan Sidle weaponized Instagram and TikTok with scrappy appearances in backyards and junkyards, quickly earning supportive comments and direct messages from the diverse likes of Skrillex, Fred Durst, and Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers. Since then the band has experienced a meteoric rise – gaining a combined social following of 500k and regularly garnering over 2M views per week on TikTok.The magnetism of their musicianship and creativity quickly drew producer Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Buddy Guy, Tom Waits). King guided the New Haven, Connecticut duo as they collectively sharpened an identity and vision for what became Robot Monster. The band took shape without sacrificing, limiting, or overly complicating the initial spark, which quickly attracted so many.On their self-titled debut album they summon the enduring strength of stripped-down, bluesy rock n' roll with the feel of indie rock and punkish power. Songs like the riff-oriented and hooky groove monster “Caged,” the moody “Cargo Cult,” the expansively melodious “King of Everything,” and the atmospheric “When We Sang” confirm ROBOT MONSTER is a genuine force of nature. Both guys are in their twenties yet fully cognizant of the timeless appeal of what they've begun. Cornelius the Groundhog is excited to end hibernation and soon go back to school. But when his mother must leave him to forage for food, Cornelius is left in the care of Mrs. Squirrel. Not happy about this, Cornelius decides to go off on his own … a choice he soon regrets. Will Mrs. Squirrel come to the rescue?Granny MacDuff is pleased to bring you this story in conjunction with Adventure Nannies!About The Adventure Nannies:It's always been about adventure. The idea for Adventure Nannies was born in Denver in 2007, when founder Brandy Schultz made a name for herself as “The Adventure Nanny,” joining families on backpacking treks through the Canadian wilderness, trips to Burning Man, and other off-the-beaten-path destinations. In between Brandy's adventures, she met an aspiring musician, Wesley Schultz (now of The Lumineers), who had recently moved to town and was working as a busboy to make ends meet. They began dating and, as Brandy's calendar filled up with families trying to hire her for upcoming trips, she saw an opportunity to launch a business and support Wesley's music. The Adventure Nannies website officially launched in 2012 and was geared toward finding exceptional travel nannies with unique skill sets for adventurous families across the country. The company's services instantly became popular among families living on the coasts who were relocating or living temporarily in new cities. Brandy's drive and passion for helping families find the perfect nannies continued, but at the same time a song Wesley had written nearly a decade earlier, “Ho Hey,” became an overnight radio sensation and The Lumineers embarked on an expansive set of tours, being on the road for nearly 300 nights a year.In the midst of the band's success, Shenandoah Davis was brought in as a consultant in 2015 and quickly came on board to run Adventure Nannies while Brandy went on her own adventures with her family. An ex-musician herself, Shenandoah had met both Wes and Brandy through musical circles. Shenandoah has dived into the agency headfirst, quickly becoming an industry leader speaking at nationwide industry conferences, and joining the board of directors of The Association for Premier Agencies, the only group that sets ethical and best-practice standards in the largely unregulated field of domestic staffing agencies.Adventure Nannies has grown substantially over the past few years, offering private educator and newborn care specialist searches in addition to nanny searches, and growing from a team of 3 to a team of 17 (and 5 kiddos, 19 dogs, and 9 cats).

@mejoetowne @thewebbsisters Joe chats with the marvelously talented Webb Sisters about what they learned about collaborating with some of the world's top musicians and producers and what it feels like being on stage with thousands of people watching night after night. They talk about cultivating excellence in and around performance, the relationships that can change the trajectory of our lives and internal struggles that emerge around the very dream jobs we work so hard to bring into being. Ultimately, the Webb Sisters share that the obstacles themselves —from self doubt to performance anxiety and people pleasing can also become our best teachers. Who are Charley & Hattie? “The sublime Webb Sisters” was how Leonard Cohen introduced Charley and Hattie on his international comeback tour. Charley and Hattie joined Leonard for this 6 year global adventure on the road, becoming well known for their close harmony sibling vocals and unique instrumentation, of harp, mandolin and guitar. Starting at the beginning with their first major label release 'Daylight Crossing', they burst onto the UK music scene via Mercury Records receiving 'Single and Album of the Week' on itunes and BBC Radio 2. An album of strong melodies, led by Hattie's harp, Charley's rhythmic guitar and drenched in their signature harmonies; Tom Petty said: “their own records are incredible, they will blow your mind”. Whilst on the road with Leonard, The Webb Sisters recorded and released their album ‘Savages' and EP's ‘The Other Side' & 'When Will You Come Home', produced by legendary producer Peter Asher. Their song 'Baroque Thoughts' went on to win The International Music Award for 'Best Adult Contemporary Song'. The sisters joined Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to sing with them on their 40th Anniversary tour in 2017, singing with Tom on his final 50 concerts. Hattie and Charley recorded with The Lumineers on their record ‘III', performing with them live at The O2 Arena in November of the same year. Then collaborating with Wesley Schultz for his recent solo album ‘Vignettes'. Their distinctive vocal sound has contributed to live performances with; and recordings by the likes of Sting, The Avett Brothers, Glen Hansard, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Marketa Irglova, Damien Rice and Elvis Costello. The Webb Sisters received the 2019 Maynooth University Ireland Award for Arts and Culture. Thanks for checking out this very special bonus episode. Today we're pleased to feature a great podcast called Basic Folk, by sharing one of their episodes in our feed. Fellow members of the American Songwriter podcast network, Basic Folk is a unique show that features honest conversations with a variety of musicians. The proceedings are anchored by public radio host Cindy Howes and guest host, singer/songwriter Lizzie No. They bring the warmth, the humor, and most importantly, insightful questions to a genre that is often misunderstood. Their definition of “folk” is extremely broad, so they've featured interviews with people such as Tom Rush, Jonatha Brooke, and even some past Songcraft guests, including Lori McKenna, Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive, and Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls. The interview we're sharing with you today features Cindy's chat with Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers. The two-time Grammy nominees have released three studio albums, starting with the triple platinum self-titled debut which featured now-classic songs such as “Hey Ho” and “Stubborn Love.” Subsequent releases have featured Top 10 Billboard rock singles such as “Ophelia,” “Angela,” and “Gloria,” making The Lumineers one of the most popular artists in the folk-oriented Americana genre. We chose to feature this particular episode based on Wesley's in-depth analysis of songwriting, including the first comparison we've ever heard on songwriting and playing golf as similar disciplines. Interesting interview, so check it out. Wesley Schultz. The Lumineers. Basic Folk. Good stuff!

This was such a cool episode for me. I absolutely LOVE The Lumineers - their music is INCREDIBLE. Today's guest is Brandy Schultz. Brandy is the founder of Adventure Nannies. She founded Adventure Nannies after 8 years of working as a travel nanny. As the original Adventure Nanny, she went cliff diving with kids in Italy, worked on a farm in Southern France, attended Burning Man, and learned survival skills in the Rocky Mountain wilderness. Brandy's passion for active families and dynamic visionary leadership has propelled Adventure Nannies from its infancy into the high-touch worldwide boutique nanny agency it is today. In between Brandy's adventures, she met an aspiring musician, Wesley Schultz, who had recently moved to town and was working as a busboy to make ends meet. They began dating and, as Brandy's calendar filled up with families trying to hire her for upcoming trips, she saw an opportunity to launch a business and support her musician boyfriend. You may know Wesley from his amazing band, the Lumineers. (Biggest indie/folk rock band in the world). In this episode, Brandy and I chat about her unconventional journey as an entrepreneur, building a business while being on tour, mid-way through we are joined by her husband, Wes and they talk about the crazy life of being on tour and keeping their relationship alive after 10 years, Brandy ends the episode with some advice she has for aspiring entrepreneurs. This was such a fun episode - Brandy absolutely is hilarious! I hope you enjoy :) @wellnowwhatpodcast on IG. Follow Brandy @brandybschultz on IG and @adventurenannies. @wesleyschultz
This week, host Z. Lupetin talks to one of the founding members of beloved folk-rock hitmakers The Lumineers - drummer and pianist Jeremiah Fraites. After following his heart to Italy, Jeremiah dialed into the podcast from Turin - his wife's hometown. Alongside juggling duties as co-songwriter and performer in one of the most successful acoustic groups of the last twenty years and raising his two-year-old son, Fraites released a gorgeous instrumental record called Piano Piano this January. Nearly fifteen years in the making, Piano Piano was created at his former home in Denver during the height of the early COVID-19 lockdowns, with his two favorite pianos leading the way as main characters in a story that seemed to unfurl, as his wife would say in Italian, “step by step” - delicately, but with passion. First he used a newer Steinway for the brighter, more forceful tones, and then a warmly creaky creature, that his piano teacher sarcastically named “Firewood,” for the most personal moments. Really, it's the tiny imperfections that make this solo work shine: when you can hear the bench swaying slightly, when you spot his wife making dinner in the next room as the sustain pedal is pressed into the wood floor, when the aged instrument struggles to hammer out the final notes (but finally does,) and when Fraites and the instrument seem to breathe and speak and cry out, together. While certain smaller songs like “Departure” and “Chilly” are as intimate as fateful field recordings, other standouts like “Tokyo” and “Arrival” are more polished pieces, blooming from that same small space but growing into masterful orchestral widescreen soundscapes with the help of violinist Lauren Jacobson (who often plays with The Lumineers,) cellists Rubin Kodheli and Alex Waterman, and the 40-piece FAME's Orchestra from Macedonia. Fraites was born in New Jersey, where he grew up with Lumineers frontman Wesley Schultz. When they self-released their confessional and warm-hearted self-tilted record in 2012, the two friends never imagined that they would have a chart-topping hit on their hands. Playing the scruffy bars around Denver before their fanbase expanded exponentially and their first record went triple-platinum, The Lumineers soon found themselves headlining international pop festivals, opening for U2 and Tom Petty, placing songs in The Hunger Games and Game Of Thrones, selling out Madison Square Garden (twice) and finally filling their favorite hallowed Colorado venues like Red Rocks. Before the pandemic slowed them down, The Lumineers were bringing their same acoustic spirit to a full-on arena tour coast to coast - showcasing their newest album III. If you're reading this right now, you've probably found yourself singing along to their romantic, stomping ear-worms “Ho Hey” or “Ophelia” or heard them accidentally a thousand times in the last decade, (both have been streamed over 500 million times and counting,) but all of that is paused for now. What a perfect time for a peaceful piano record to clear our heads. As Jeremiah has gained confidence as a sought-after composer, songwriter and unlikely pop performer, he's given himself the space to finally create the deeply personal record he's been hoping to share for decades.
Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateWesley Schultz has one of the most recognizable modern voices in folk music. His band, The Lumineers, are arguably the most popular group of the genre embarking on stadium tours worldwide to support their chart-topping records. From afar, he also seems like one of the most humble and good-natured people to have lived. After doing a deep dive into his history and being able to talk to him in this capacity, I can confirm that the rumors are true: Wesley Schultz is very kind, thoughtful and generous. Well, at least I can confirm, he is the nicest person I've talked to that also has a signature Frye boot.Wesley grew up in Ramsey, NJ with his parents, including his clinical psychologist father, who sadly died during Wes' teen years. He became very close with his future bandmate Jeremiah Fraites after Jeremiah's brother and Wes' good friend Josh died of an overdose. The two bonded through grief, which they expressed through performing music. Eventually they would make their way to Colorado as The Lumineers and found massive success with their debut album, which included the huge hit "Ho Hey." Two more hit albums followed. 2020 included plans for a world tour in support of the latest record, III. Once the pandemic hit and the world stopped, Wes and Jeremiah found themselves with free time. Jeremiah just released a beautiful instrumental album, Piano Piano. Wes also released his solo debut album, Vignettes, a covers album as a way to introduce people to songs they might not know. He performs songs by Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits, Counting Crows and for me, it came at exactly the right time. The album is calming and it grounded me in a way that only music can do. I am so fortunate for the opportunity to talk to Wes about his music. I hope you enjoy and learn something new about this very special musician! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Lumineers lead singer and co-songwriter Wesley Schultz first heard “Pretty Paper” when his parents played Willie’s classic, 1978 holiday album of the same name while driving around their New Jersey neighborhood looking at Christmas lights. The song is a Yuletide standard—so much so that a lot of listeners don’t even know Willie wrote it—and it prompts Wes to think aloud about the power of lonesome songs during the holiday season, give an unexpected, apples-to-apples comparison between Willie and Bruce Springsteen, and explain how absolutely rare it is to find a Christmas song you can listen to all year long. The Lumineers need no introduction but deserve one regardless. This chart-topping, award-winning American folk rock group makes genuine, straightforward music that comes from the heart and has been riveting audiences all over the world for a good decade-and-a-half now. With each album they've released their storytelling prowess grows stronger and a little bit darker and their last album III cements their status as masters of the concept album, tackling tricky subject matter and shedding light on pivotal societal issues that are so often marginalised. Chatting about the removal of ego from their art, Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Freitas talk about their unique songwriting relationship, dealing with writing a new album that is not influenced by a global pandemic, and share their thoughts as to how they've remained grounded all these years. Addiction has touched the lives of The Lumineers' Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz. Jeremiah’s brother, with whom Wes was also close, was just 19 when he died of a heroin overdose. Wes meanwhile has been dealing with the addiction of an anonymous family member for years. And it’s these experiences that inform The Lumineers latest album, III. It’s a concept album split in three chapters and focused on three generations of the fictional Sparks family, who are torn apart by drug addiction, alcoholism and tragedy. Not surprisingly, writing it touched on a lot of raw emotions for both Wes and Jeremiah as they explain in this interview. We also talk about the band’s formative years, the intense levels of dedication it took the duo to find success, how music helped them with their grief and much more.
Wesley Schultz from The Lumineers talks about the transition from touring to self-quarantine, negotiating the timing and process of having meals delivered and thinking more about the “we' than the “I”.
We boldly continue on in our series about touring and being a tour nanny with a special guest: "Mr. Brandy" as he's called in these circles, a.k.a. Wesley Schultz, the singer of The Lumineers. Wes and Brandy discuss what life on the road has been like since adding their son Lenny and Adventure Nanny Meaghan to the road crew, and what being a new parent and nanny employer has meant for Wes as a professional musician. Also, Wes writes us the new 'Adventure Nannies On Air' theme song!
Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites of The Lumineers join q's Tom Power to discuss their most ambitious project yet: a three-part album and film about the cycle of addiction.

On Friday night, I was set to plop down here in the office and fire out another fine episode of Short Time Shots. By the way, that's the show you're listening to and it's a look back at the day's scores and more in college wrestling. I'd also be your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant. But once my wife and I finished having some quiet time watching the most recent episode of Top Chef, I went to the Mat Talk Online headquarters and realized there were like a lot of duals last night. By the time I finished logging them into the nation's most robust college wrestling scoreboard, which you can find at almanac.mattalkonline.com, it was nearly 2 a.m. and I had to be up early Saturday to make chocolate chip pancakes for the girls. Sometimes, I just don't have the time to push out a daily scores episode. Today is different, because there were 104 dual meets that I could track on Saturday - there's a few JUCOs that won't report their results until March, but that's not important right now. It's Saturday, January 27 and here's what we had to roll with. We had two stellar top 10 duals, one in the Big Ten and another between former Big 12 rivals. Where to begin? Let's go with the place that had the bigger crowd and that would almost always be Iowa. No. 7 Michigan beat No. 4 Iowa 21-17 in front of over 10,000 fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Michigan wasn't as explosive as it was a week prior when the Wolverines trounced Minnesota. In fact, it seemed like they left a lot of potential bonus points on the table. Credit Iowa for wrestling very tough and nearly pulling out the win in a dual where they were without the services of All-American Michael Kemerer. Alex Marinelli stayed unbeaten, topping Logan Massa 3-2 at 165 pounds, but Michigan would sweep the last four weights with the biggest win coming at 197 pounds where Kevin Beazley topped Cash Wilcke 6-5. The win set up the dual-winning triumph by heavyweight Adam Coon, who beat Sam Stoll 3-2. In Stillwater, things were a bit wild and crazy, like the Wild and Crazy Kids. Anyone remember that? Chances are, if you're below the age of 32, you don't. Nickelodeon was so awesome back in the day -- You Can't Do That On Television, Double Dare, Turkey TV. Oh, speaking of things you're not supposed to do - Jaydin Eierman of Missouri decided to complicate things even more by pinning two-time national champion Dean Heil at 141 pounds in Missouri's 21-19 win over No. 5 Oklahoma State. Combine that with Willie Miklus' modest upset over Preston Weigel at 197 pounds and Brian Smith has his Tigers 16-0 and a clear No. 3 in the Coaches Poll. What's going to make things interesting in the voting this week is the fact Iowa was without Kemerer, but hey, big boy sports right - you play without your starting quarterback, you lose, you drop in the rankings. Rank it like a team sport, when you're looking at dual rankings. No. 10 Virginia Tech got quite a fight from Duke, but a fall by Zack Zavatsky at 184 pounds gave the Hokies enough breathing room to improve to 2-0 in the ACC and 12-2 overall. Zavatsky has scored 10 straight bonus point wins. He also helped the Hokies knock off Lehigh on Friday night. Cornell won two matches on the day. The Big Red beat Harvard 35-3 and Brown 27-9. The two wins give Cornell 80 straight dual meet wins in the Ivy League. Fredy Stroker saw his first action in the Cornell lineup. He split matches on the day, beating Harvard's Brock Wilson but losing to 500th-year senior Justin Staudenmayer of Brown. What's also of interest is Max Dean of Cornell beat his cousin Kanon Dean of Harvard 3-0. Last year, Max's brother Gabe beat Kanon. Must be a rather uncomfortable silence at the kids table on holidays up in Michigan. Rider has emerged as the top dog -- or in this case, horse -- in the EWL after the 19th-ranked Broncs beat 23rd-ranked Lock Haven 22-12. Let's cut right to the chase here. 165 pounds, right? Well, Chance Marsteller continued his climb up the rankings, beating two-time All-American Chad Walsh 8-4. The only other ranked team in action was No. 22 Wyoming, which beat Fresno State 40-6. Ok, let's just get this out of the way, Dewey Krueger is the Jose Oquendo of college wrestling. Don't know who Jose Oquendo is? Look it up. Or don't. The guy was the ultimate utility man in baseball. He could play every position, and over the course of his major league career, he did. Last week, Krueger weighed in at 157 and yes, won by fall at 197. On Saturday, he got another victory, this time at 184 pounds. If Missouri would have been able to borrow him, I'm sure Brian Smith would have thrown HIM out there at heavyweight. Other things in the Division I world that you SHOULD be paying attention to - Binghamton improved to 8-4 and they stand at 5-0 in the EIWA, which is technically in first place. Cornell is 3-0 in conference, but 5-0 is greater than 3-0. Today the Bearcats beat Penn 19-18 and Drexel 21-12 to complete the cheesesteak sweep. That's one helluva job interim head coach Kyle Borshoff has done since taking over the program earlier this season. Sometimes those types of teams can just fall apart with a mid-season coaching change. That loss pretty much seals Drexel's fate from getting ranked this season. But yes, the Dragons did wrestle without Austin DeSanto, but what did we say earlier about wrestling with who you've got? Oh, by the way, that Bell's Hopslam I was talking about the other night? Yeah, pine tree juice. I got about two swigs into it and went NOPE. You can keep your double imperial death star IPAs. I like some hops, but mother of all that's holy, yes, it tasted like stoned cat Christmas tree urine. But hey, I guess some people like that, but I ain't them people. Hofstra's been catching some hell, but the Pride today picked up a good 22-17 win over Buffalo after falling behind 14-0 early on. Dennis Papadatos - the best hair product game in college wrestling. Navy won the All-Academy championships hosted in Charleston, South Cackalacky by The Citadel. The Mids won six individual titles and Jadaen Bernstein was the outstanding wrestler of the event. Army West Point was second. That wraps up our Division I recap, all those scores and more again, at almanac.mattalkonline.com. Speaking of Division I, you know I've talked about the best, most awesome, stellar, bodacious NCAA Division I preview guide? Well, it's available for pre-order now by going to mattalkonline.com/fanguide18. Use the offer code "podcast" and save yourself $5. Trust me, it's the ONE thing you need going into Cleveland this year. Yeah, you don't need clothes, but you need this digital preview guide. In other places around the country, Grand View won its 64th dual in a row. The Vikings beat second-ranked Missouri Valley on Friday before finishing up the conference dual schedule with a 31-16 win over No. 14 Baker. Grand View hasn't lost a dual since 2013. They've only lost NINE in school history. This is the 10th year of the program. Ashland went 6-0 at the Midwest Duals hosted by Belmont Abbey, which isn't exactly in the Midwest, it's in North Carolina. Four of those wins came on Saturday. Bellarmine earned its first two conference victories in school history. What's interesting is Bellarmine, which is in Louisville, Kentucky, started a wrestling program by absorbing what was left of the program at St. Catherine's, which closed its entire school two years ago. The Knights beat Truman State and Drury. Tiffin also picked up four wins on the day, beating Queens, Belmont Abbey, Coker and Limestone. Western State Colorado upset No. 10 Central Oklahoma 26-18 in a single dual, while in Division III, we had multiple wins registered by a slew of teams as quads were aplenty. Centenary, Johnson & Wales, TCNJ, NYU, Gettysburg and York -- the one in Pennsylvania -- all had successful dual days. Earlier this month, the namesake of the Pete Willson Invitational, former Wheaton coach Pete Willson passed away. The tournament named in his honor is like the Southern Scuffle or Midlands of Division III. On Saturday, Messiah put five in the finals and outdistanced second-place Mount Union to claim the team championship. The most impressive performances were turned in by 125-pound champion Carlos Fuentes of Wheaton, who beat Baldwin Wallace's Chris Doyle 12-3 in the finals. Mount Union's Jairod James knocked off 2016 Division III champion Ben Swarr 6-4 in the finals at 174 pounds. And UW-La Crosse's Wesley Schultz pinned Messiah All-American Kyle Koser in a minute in the 197-pound final. The tournament showed good individual balance as eight different teams won individual titles, led by Messiah's three -- Stephen Maloney at 149, Kevin Edwards at 157 and Jeff Hojnacki at 165. There’s been a lot of talk about shifting weights this week and of course, on Thursday night, the action in Brookings, South Dakota did not disappoint as No. 15 South Dakota State beat No. 22 Wyoming 20-18 in Big 12 action. Wait, the dual meet? What are you talking about? We’ll talk about all that and more on Short Time Shots, a look back at the day’s wrestling scores and more, I’m Hall of Fame broadcaster, announcer and writer Jason Bryant. Caution - NAME DROPPING AHEAD. So by now most of you know Wyoming’s Bryce Meredith, the top-ranked 141-pounder by Flowrestling met up with South Dakota State’s Seth Gross, the top-ranked 133-pounder by everyone. What started as some Twitter talk quickly escalated into a match that caused wrestling historians, including myself, to pore through old results to find out the last time this happened. So before we get into the history, Meredith, an NCAA runner-up two seasons ago, topped Gross, an NCAA runner-up last season 4-2, scoring midway through the third period to break a 1-1 tie. He tacked on a riding time point to make it 4-2, but when you look at what this was, it was much more than a 4-2 win. Giving promotional credit where credit is due -- Flowrestling, which has the rights to stream all of South Dakota State’s home duals -- jumped all over this and rightly so. On Flowrestling Radio Live on Thursday morning, they brought on Jackrabbits coach Chris Bono to explain the situation and why he bought in. Bono, who also had the buy in from Wyoming coach Mark Branch, and Flo, played this one perfectly. It’s like catching lightning in a bottle -- build up, the right amount of hype and a great match to finish. We need more opportunities to showcase the individual matchups we have in dual meets like this. The only thing lost at the end of the dual was who won, considering Wyoming still had a chance to win the match in the last weight. So, December 18, 1998 - Eric Guerrero handed Stephen Abas a 5-3 loss. What exactly was the situation there? Let me run to the stacks and tell you, from the pages of Amateur Wrestling News. Abas was ranked 2nd in the country behind Oklahoma State Cowboy Teague Moore. So what we could have had was No. 1 vs. No. 2 at 125, but instead, we had No. 1 at 133 vs. No. 2 at 125. But would we? NO! You see, Teague wasn’t in the lineup that weekend for Oklahoma State and it would be future All-American Jeff Ragan getting the call. So does Stephen Abas go to work on a then-unheralded underclassmen or does he bump up and face another Californian. It went 5-3 in Guerrero’s favor. Shifting our attention to Division II No. 10 Upper Iowa improved to 6-3 with a 30-7 win over MSU Moorhead, that in the Northern Sun Conference. At 174, Jordan Gundrum picked off eighth-ranked Adam Blees to highlight the Peacocks victory. Wins by Isaac Lopez, Richard Bencomo and Tuli Laulu sealed the victory for coach Jason Ramstetter’s Adams State Grizzlies as they beat New Mexico Highlands 25-16. Closer to home, Augustana -- University -- the one in South Dakota -- picked up a 27-9 Northern Sun victory over Southwest Minnesota State. Record another fall for Aero Amo at 184 pounds from Augustana. This guy has been around forever it seems. Fresh off a championship at the Virginia Duals, King University returned to its winning ways with a 26-21 win over Coker in ECAC South action. It was a 5-5 split, and even without nationally ranked 133-pounder Dustin Kirk, the Tornado were just fine. Geography note, as offered by Julia Salata. If you’re catching a trucker out of Philly, he probably had a nice long toke, because you don’t head west through the Cumberland Gap to get to Johnson City, Tennessee. Don’t believe me? Google Map it. Speaking of Moorhead, we’ll go to Division III, where top-ranked Augsburg headed West on I-94 and stopped just short of the North Dakota line, but they didn’t stop short of a win. The Auggies didn’t Fear the Ear, instead, they’d win the four of the first five matches via bonus and beat Concordia -- the one in Moorhead -- 36-6. On the mic out in Moorhead, PA announcer Brian Doucette. No. 8 UW-Whitewater beat No. 12 UW-La Crosse 19-15. The big Warhawk win came at 125 pounds where Mike Tortorice knocked off super freshman Zach Villareal 8-0. At 197, returning national champion Jordan Newman iced the victory with a 7-4 win over Wesley Schultz. Wabash jumped out to a big lead and cruised past Millikin 25-15. The Little Giants -- yes, we haven’t had too many Little Giants references this year -- had five of their six wins via bonus, including a fall at 157 from Kyle Hatch. Millikin also shut out MacMurray 48-0. UW-Oshkosh topped MSOE -- that’s the Milwaukee School of Engineering 36-10. In addition to name-dropping the Concordia announcer, I’ll do the same for the Titans former announcer Casey Nelson, who like me, was an applicant for the Timberwolves gig a few months ago. Up in the mitten (that’s Michigan in case you’re wondering), Olivet picked up five bonus victories including technical falls from Tyler Grimsley at 165 and Ryan Clark at 184 to beat Adrian 27-19. Big news also came out of Michigan this week as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced it would be sponsoring men’s wrestling as a conference sport starting next year. That will put Olivet, Adrian, Alma and Trine -- which isn’t in Michigan, but it’s in the conference -- as the four schools with teams. The positive there? Well, since a conference sponsors the sport, the opportunity to add new programs within is greater, so let’s keep an eye out to see if Albion, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo and St. Mary’s are looking to start teams in the future.
