Sign up now at Patreon. It’s two podcasts (Pod Yourself and the Frotcast) for the price of one! Patreon dot com slash frotcast! This is just a teaser, but you can hear the full episode by signing up on Patreon. This week, Matt is unhappily parenting, or maybe just looking for parking, in Sedona, Arizona, and Brendan is fixing an exploding pool pump, but that’s no reason to fret, because we’re ringing in the year with Sean Keane, from the Roundball Rock podcast and soon to be playing Cobb’s Comedy Club this January 7th in San Francisco. We’re discussing New Year’s Eve, and how it’s by far the most overrated holiday, but also mourning the death of a true poster, Mike Fossey, aka Mike F, by reading a few of his greatest posts. Then we mourn our dead The Wire actors, Ziggy and Clay Davis, and I tell the story of my one Isiah Whitlock Jr. encounter, which Matt rudely interrupts to call in from Sedona, Arizona while he’s in the middle of pooping. He tells us all about the crystal vortex and why he hates vacation parenting and thinks everyone in Sedona is actually on drugs. After that, we discuss Gwyneth Paltrow’s journey from actress to Goop CEO and back to actress again (Sean read a book!), and since it’s year-end list season, we review the one awards season film that Sean has seen, which happens to be Jay Kelly. Didja ever notice that Jay Kelly would’ve been much better if it had been about Adam Sandler’s character? Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? That leads into a bunch of related discussions, about American Beauty, Ben Affleck’s greatest roles and how well he lays pipe. And also Is This Thing On? and movies about stand-up comedy just generally. The regular Frot boys will be back next week, but in the meantime hope you like Sean and I just bullshitting about movies for a while. As always, no refunds.

Writer, director, and producer Bradley Cooper joins us to discuss the sound of his latest film, “Is This Thing On?” Audio became a primary storytelling tool in shaping the film's deeply subjective point of view. In conversation with the film's sound team, the director breaks down how perspective, texture, and restraint were used to place audiences directly inside the emotional experience of a man discovering stand-up comedy as his marriage unravels. For Cooper, that approach ultimately comes back to how films are meant to be experienced in theaters.“It's really about the theatergoing experience — how you best tell the story in these rooms, in this theatrical space. And to me, I haven't seen a better version than those two elements: Dolby Vision and Atmos. When Stefan [Sonnenfeld] and I colored the Dolby Vision, it was like, ‘Oh — there's the movie.' And when you do it in Atmos, in terms of mixing sound… the immersive experience — it's just a whole different experience than a 5.1 mix. It's not even in the same universe… And once you go there, you can never go back. I watched a movie the other night that wasn't in Atmos, and I couldn't stop imagining what it could be.”—Bradley Cooper, Writer, Director, Producer, “Is This Thing On?”Joining today's conversation:- Bradley Cooper, Director, Producer- Dane A. We've got a little stocking stuffer for you here at Breakfast All Day. Lots of big movies coming out over the next couple of weeks, including "Avatar: Fire and Ash," which we reviewed on Tuesday. As for the weekend's other new releases, here's what we have for you: THE HOUSEMAID. Deliciously twisty trash starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, who definitely knew the assignment. Because this is a Paul Feig movie (based on a best-selling novel), the clothes and interiors are to die for. This is a non-spoiler review, because you deserve to enjoy all the wild surprises in store for you. In theaters. IS THIS THING ON? The third film from director Bradley Cooper is in a lower, more intimate key that we both really enjoyed. Will Arnett stars as a husband and father of two who works through his divorce by turning to stand-up comedy. Inspired by the true story of British comic John Bishop. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Our last one of the year, and there was so much to talk about: Rob Reiner, Oscar shortlists, the Academy Awards moving to YouTube in 2029, trailers for "Disclosure Day," "Digger" and the "Melania" documentary, and more. We look forward to resuming these with you in 2026. We'll have one more episode for 2025 on Tuesday, with reviews of "Marty Supreme," "Anaconda" and "No Other Choice." Nick teams up with film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy for an expanded round of movie talk as the year end release rush hits full speed. They dig into a packed slate that includes the newest chapter in James Cameron's Avatar saga, Timothée Chalamet's latest turn in Marty Supreme, and Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson fronting a Neil Diamond tribute band in Song Sung Blue. The conversation also covers Will Arnett as a down-on-his-luck stand-up comic in Is This Thing On?, Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid, and the Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent, with a few more titles folded in along the way. With so many major releases landing at once, the discussion stretches out and takes its time, offering thoughtful reactions and plenty of back and forth between three longtime critics who know each other's tastes well. Esmeralda sits this one out, but the movie talk more than fills the space as the holiday film season kicks into high gear. [Ep 413]

Art imitates life for Canadian actor Will Arnett (Arrested Development, BoJack Horseman) in “Is This Thing On?” — a new film about a middle-aged man at a crossroads. Will left Toronto for New York City right after school to pursue a career in acting. Instead of doing stand-up or sketch comedy, he studied the craft in hopes of becoming a dramatic actor. But then his obvious comedic ability steered him in a different direction. Will joins Tom Power to talk about circling back to that dream with his latest film, and why he tells director and co-star Bradley Cooper he loves him every day.
Reaction to the much anticipated trailer for Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday. Plus reviews of Avatar: Fire and Ash, The Housemaid, David, Queen of Coal and Is This Thing On? Hilarity ensues?
This week everyone saw everything, so we start off with Park Chan-Wook's latest, the darkly comic thriller NO OTHER CHOICE (2:51), in which a 25-year veteran of a paper company is laid off and after a series of poor interviews, can't find another job. So he does the next logical thing: He decides to murder everyone in his field who may be more qualified than he is. Yikes! We all had our problems with this (it ain't THE HANDMAIDEN), but we did find things to like. But it seems we're outliers; NO OTHER CHOICE is getting critical raves but we all found it lukewarm for one reason or another. We follw up with Bradley Cooper's latest directorial effort, IS THIS THING ON? (28:44) Alex (Will Arnett, who's dynamite and also co-wrote the script) starts doing stand-up while sorting through the ditritus of his marriage. Tess (Laura Dern, who's dynamite) returns to her first (professional) love, and...things happen! (Sorry. It's 3 a.m.) Two of us really enjoyed this, and one of us did not. Over on Patreon, we talk about the 1985 Martin Scorsese comedy AFTER HOURS.

There's so much happening right now that we had to do a midweek visit with you here at Breakfast All Day. First, we reviewed the big movie of the week, "Avatar: Fire and Ash." James Cameron just keeps making "Avatar" movies, so we'll keep reviewing them. At least this time, Oona Chaplin adds an element of crazy-sexy danger as the leader of a tribe that's challenging the Na'vi. In theaters this Friday. Of course, we had to honor Rob Reiner, who was shockingly slain in his Brentwood home over the weekend alongside his wife, Michele. Since we recorded this, the couple's son, Nick, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder in connection with the killings. We remember Reiner as a director who made some of the most beloved and enduring movies of all time across a wide variety of genres, from "This Is Spinal Tap" to "The Princess Bride" to "When Harry Met Sally ..." to "Misery." We also pay tribute to how active he and his wife were in Democratic politics and causes. We'll devote our January Off the Menu poll to Reiner's work, so keep an eye out for that. Finally, a feel-good movie that we didn't feel particularly good about: "Rental Family." It's been out for a few weeks, so we wanted to catch up with it. Brendan Fraser stars as an American actor struggling to find work in Japan. He takes a job with an agency that hires out people to play a role in strangers' lives. Lots of people love this movie, but we did not. In theaters now. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us during the holidays. We'll have reviews of "The Housemaid" and "Is This Thing On?" plus movie news Friday, so come on back.

Award season is nigh, so is the holiday movie season. All the movies are heavily advertised and publicized now. But not all of them are worth your good money, In fact, we may save you a lot of money this time around. We start with "Marty Supreme." It's this year's award bait movie starring Timothee Chalamet. There was one last year too but this one is about a ping pong player. Really. We all saw it and let's just say we pretty much agree on it. We've also all seen "Jay Kelly." "It stars George Clooney as a movie star named Jay Kelly. It's got Adam Sandler in it too. Our thumbs all pretty much pointed in the same direction on this one too. But which way? Then there's "Is This Thing On?" starring Will Arnet as a standup comedian going through a divorce. "Aren't they all? You ask. Yes, but they're not all directed by Bradley Cooper. We've also got a quirky fable called "100 Nights a Hero" which probably won't play in a theater near you but should you watch it when it inevitably streams? And there's "Merrily We Roll Along" which is a filmed version of a Broadway musical which people payed big money to see. But even crappy Broadwaymusicals cost big money to see. Is this worth paying a movie price to watch? There's more. There's the streaming series "Pluribus" and tales of film company parties too. Plus we'll fill you in on who got snubbed by the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards. And by our count we may save you over $100 bucks you would have wasted at the movies so you owe us a listen.
