This week, we start watching the remaining Best International Film nominees from this years Oscars. This first film is one where we will only say - see it if you are a fan of and / or tolerate every genre of movies. If you do, put it at the top of your queue. Sirat (2025), directed by Oliver Laxe.
On today's very special episode of Final Cut, Walter Fedczuk, Chase Wassenar and Kristen Pignuolo reminisce about their latest LA visit and give an early review of LACMA's upcoming exhibit before moving onto Sirat. Together, they discuss what parts of the film are undeniably great, the divisive choices with the film's casting and dialogue, and the deeper symbolism that either really helped or really hurt their enjoyment. This one is a divisive one, folks.Follow Chase, Walter, Kristen and the Rough Drafts Podcast on BlueSky.
For Iranian artist Farnaz Khosh-Sirat, it was critical to end the performance with “a blossom of hope,” believing hope is the reason Iranians will never be defeated. She communicated this with a lively song on a major scale.
Other songs performed by Iranian artist Farnaz Khosh-Sirat drew from classical Persian poetry, including works by Hafez emphasizing themes of grievance and the necessity of love and friendship.
Iranian artist Farnaz Khosh-Sirat performed at the “Among the Tulips” concert behind the mural she had created for Multicultural Center through the week of April 12.
Iranian artist Farnaz Khosh-Sirat's opening pieces, performed in a minor scale, centered on grief and loss. One referenced a well-known lyric, “from the blood of the youth, a tulip has grown,” a line that mirrored the Multicultural Center's tulip mural behind her.

Is Farage faltering? Reform's poll lead is slowly sliding, so much so that last week Farage administered a Trumpian punishment beating to pollsters YouGov in classic “shoot the messenger” style. Is Britain starting to see through Nigel's chicanery – or is it all wishful thinking on our part? And how are Labour and the Tories dealing with not one but two insurgent parties: the Greens as well as Reform? The Driver from 1978 was written and directed by Walter Hill (Hard Times, 48 Hours, The Warriors) as a response to what he saw as coventional genre fare. Hill was after making a film pure in intent and story without the typical Hollywood trappings. Audiences in 1978 were not impressed but the film has since been championed by contemporary filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright as an example of adrenaline fueled style over needless substance. The film stars Ryan O'Neal, Isabelle Adjani, Bruce Dern and Ronee Blakley. Along with this car chase classic, Dan and Vicky discuss recently seen items like Sirat, The Retreat, Solo Mio, K-Pops!, Hoppers and Netlix documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model. Ian sits down with director Oliver Laxe, whose 2025 film Sirat will compete for Best International Feature at next weekend's Academy Awards! In this harrowing story of grief, desperation, and alternative cultures, a father (Sergi López) attends a rave in the Moroccan desert to find his missing daughter. He has his young son (Bruno Núñez Arjona) in tow, and the pair wind up following a caravan of partiers deeper into the wilderness. There, they encounter tragedies beyond imagination, and face an existential crisis set to a cruel techno beat.In this brief interview, Ian and Oliver talk about the co-writer/director's unconventional approach to screenwriting; shooting dangerous and complicated scenes in the desert; and how movies kill their audiences and bring them back from the dead!Sirat opens in Chicago at the Music Box Theatre on Friday, March 6 (featuring a Q&A with Oliver and co-writer Santiago Fillol!).
This week's Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt sit down in a London hotel room with Amanda Seyfried and Mona Fastvold, star and director respectively of the audacious new musical biopic, The Testament Of Ann Lee. It's a conversation that takes in everything from wearing T-shirts with your face on it to the trick of choreographing incredibly complex dance numbers, and is a ton of fun. That starts around 42:18 and finishes around 1:02:50. Elsewhere, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, for the first time on the regular pod, Evolution Of Horror host Mike Muncer, as they discuss movie news including the BAFTAs and the latest Toy Story 5 trailer, answer questions on what movie-related thing they'd give up for Lent, the movie juries they'd like to be on (or not), and run their critical eye over Scream 7, The Testament Of Ann Lee, Sirat, and The Bluff. Oh, and Chris finally gets round to explaining how, and why, he nearly stepped on Florence Pugh's dress. Enjoy.

Ep. 383: Oliver Laxe on Sirat Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. In Sirat, director Oliver Laxe tells the story of a father searching for his daughter with his young son's help. But the milieu isn't what one might expect: a desert rave scene in an unidentified country in a world plunged into disarray and war. Premiered in Cannes last year and still in U.S. cinemas, Sirat's visceral, spiritual journey joins together the father (Sergi Lopez) with a motley crew of ravers rumbling into the desert and running into a tragedy that tends to catch audiences off guard. I spoke with Laxe recently about the film, which is nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature alongside It Was Just an Accident (directed by Jafar Panahi), The Secret Agent (Kleber Mendonca Filho), Sentimental Value (Joachim Trier), and The Voice of Hind Rajab (Kaouther Ben Hania). Our latest guests on Soundtracking is Oliver Laxe co-writer and director of Sirat. Sirat sees Luis and his son travel through Morocco from party to party in search of Luis's daughter, who has been missing for five months having last been seen at a rave in the desert. It features an incredibly immersive score by French techno wizard, Kangding Ray.

What happens to the body in the deep sea? You need oxygen to survive, but too much oxygen can be deadly. If you rise to the surface too quickly, nitrogen bubbles can form in your body and kill you. Terry Gross spoke with author and scientist Rachel Lance last year about her research for the military. She used a hyperbaric chamber that mimics what divers and submarines are exposed to. Her book, ‘Chamber Divers,' is about the scientists whose dangerous experiments about underwater pressure and injury were critical to the success of D-Day.Also, Justin Chang reviews ‘Sirat,' which he calls one of the most gripping movies of the year.
