On today's episode, we speak to writer Brandon Osterman, whose short script ‘The Naughty List' won last year's Final Draft Big Break Short Screenplay Category. As part of his prize package, he received a consultation with Sav Rodgers, Marketing Manager for Seed&Spark, the film industry's most popular crowdfunding platform. Sav joins the conversation to tell us exactly what crowdfunding is and help all writers understand that funding for their project is possible to achieve. “Who is your audience? At Seed&Spark, we always say that great crowdfunding is audience building first and fundraising second. While there is definitely a fundraising need, finding your audience is invaluable… Something that I always tell prospective crowdfunders is you already have the tools you need to do this. You know how to tell a story. You're here because you're a storyteller. You know how to invite people in. You already know how to talk about yourself persuasively,” says Sav Rodgers. Osterman also shares his journey creating his award-winning short script and gives advice to writers who are thinking of creating their own short film project. “I don't think there's been a better time to be making short format content than right now. The demand for it seems to be expanding every time I turn around. I think if that's something that you're interested in, go after it. You know, I think there are more opportunities to distribute that form of content than there have ever been. I think we've got a generation now that's grown up with TikTok and social media and much shorter, digestible content that, whether it's conditioning or just sort of lowering of attention spans, I think more people are more tuned into short form content than they have ever been before. It's a really, really exciting time to be making shorts,” says Osterman. To hear more about the short filmmaking process and crowdfunding, listen to the podcast.
Happy Tuesday, Christmas Fanatics! What's this? A second episode drop this week? That's right! While we may have been slacking with editing lately, we haven't been slacking with recording! So since we missed releasing a new episode last week, you get to enjoy two this week!
Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics! Can you believe that we're already less than a week out from Easter? We sure can't! This year is flying! This week, Julia and Anthony are sans Thom and - after catching up on recent movie releases - dive into the 2024 holiday-slasher film, "The Naughty List of Mr. Scrooge". Is this one of those B-movie schlockfests that's so bad it's good, à la "The Mean One"? Or is this merely a bad Lifetime movie of the week dressed up like a Christmas horror film? You'll just have to tune in to find out! So settle back, relax, and enjoy this fun and festive episode, which is the perfect way to kickstart your week! As always, thanks for your love and support, y'all!
Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHThe movie kicks off with this kid, Jack. He doesn't believe in Santa and doesn't think anyone else should either. He tells all of his cousins that Santa doesn't exist and even shows them where their parents are hiding the gifts—very naughty.Fast forward 30 years, and Jack is now an adult—still very naughty. He's stealing important information and selling it to people on the dark web.Cut to Santa, who is doing some mall duty. He does this occasionally to remind himself why he does what he does. By his side is Callum Drift, the head of Santa's security. When they return to the North Pole, Cal tells Santa that he's retiring. There's just too much naughty out there. But there's no time to mourn because Santa gets kidnapped! They suspect it has something to do with the information Jack stole. So they track him down for questioning, and Jack is completely shocked to find out that Santa is real—along with some other mythical creatures. They hire Jack to help find Santa because Jack is really good at tracking things down. Cal is annoyed that he has to team up with Jack. They track down Ted, the broker who bought the stolen information. Ted reveals that the kidnapper is the winter witch, Grýla. Suddenly, Grýla takes over Ted's body, warns them, and then sends snowmen to kill them. They manage to fight them off, but not before Ted gets frozen. They suspect that Grýla may be working with Santa's estranged brother, Krampus, who originally created the Naughty List. Cal and Jack break into Krampus' lair but are captured and forced to slap-fight Krampus. They discover that Grýla came to Krampus to retrieve a magical snow globe that can imprison people.Grýla's plan is to duplicate the magical snow globe and imprison anyone who has ever been on the Naughty List. She decides to test the snow globes on Jack and his son, Dylan, with whom he has a strained relationship.Cal realizes that the only place capable of duplicating such magic is the North Pole. That means they never actually left the North Pole, and Santa is trapped in a vault that is draining his power.Inside their snow globes, Jack and Dylan have a heartfelt conversation, which makes them “nice” and causes the globes to shatter.Grýla is about to take off with an unconscious Santa, planning to use his sleigh to deliver the cursed snow globes—but not if Cal and Jack have anything to say about it! They fight, causing the sleigh to crash-land. This enrages Grýla, who drops her human disguise and goes full giant-witch mode on them.Luckily, Krampus shows up to save his brother. But Grýla is too powerful. Santa finally wakes up, and with the help of his reindeer, they manage to capture her and imprison her in a snow globe. Now, the rush is on to deliver all the presents in time. Santa invites Jack and Dylan to join him. As Cal watches them, amazed, he realizes maybe it's all worth it after all. He tells Santa he's not going to retire.
Celebrating Women in Horror, Part 4. One of the many films that presents a Christmas slasher for the year 2024, but this one has a unique twist to the film, I guess that Mr. Scrooge finally lost it. It was great speaking to Skye and gaining the inside scoop behind her character and the concept of the movie. This movie definitely resonates with the killer Christmas spirit and could very well be compared to other horror Christmas movies. However, this one holds the originality with the Ebenezer Scrooge killer. With everything leading up to the ending, it is so well-crafted that it's hard to dismiss the film entirely. Watch it for the suspense, the stellar direction, and the fun performances-but know that the destination won't quite live up to the ride. Watch The Naughty List of Mr. Scrooge on Plex, Tubi, Chilling, Google Play, and Roku.

We are on episode 7 of the Dash & Lily series and it's quite possibly the most depressing of the lot. Dash and Lily finally have a face to face meeting but it's not the epic love story either imagined, and there's puking involved. In this episode: Corinne tells her own true version of a Christmas Carol (involving dead sister sightings), we describe the saddest Christmas animatronics we ever saw, and talk sh*t about parents behaving badly (not our own...well maybe Tamara's cause her dad went to Hawaii once without her). This entire episode is simultaneously deep and shallow and there's so many people on the naughty list but we hope you still join us for Dash & Lily.

Looks like you've found yourself on Santa's Naughty List! How the Grinch Stole Christmas isn't just a beloved holiday classic; it's a deep dive into the complexities of acceptance, compassion, and the true spirit of Christmas, that also contains a Mean One!From Dr. Seuss's iconic original story to its 1966 animated version and the 2000 live-action adaptation featuring Jim Carrey, the Grinch's transformation from a cynical hermit to a figure of redemption mirrors our own struggles with loneliness and societal pressures during the holiday season. The live-action movie's rights were auctioned by Dr Seuss' widow, Audrey Geisel, in 1998; with a list of strict rules the winning studio had to follow. Ron Howard's idea to flesh out the backstory of the character, and to give more agency to Cindy Lou Who was part of the winning bid, and Geisel wanted a big name star like Jim Carrey to play her late husband's iconic green character. She got Jim Carrey. But his gruelling makeup and costume process would cause tensions on the elaborately designed set that brought Whoville to life.Christmas is about more than just presents; it's about togetherness and the power of kindness, regardless of how big our hearts might be. The Grinch's story is ultimately one of of acceptance and the true spirit of Christmas.I would love to hear your thoughts on How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Olivia and Shauna find themselves on the Naughty List (again) this holiday season, so this episode is all about those holiday romance movies - the kind where big-city girls visit their hometowns and fall for a hunky carpenter/baker/farmer (or whatever) and learn the true meaning of Christmas. These movies are often associated with the Hallmark Channel, but can be seen everywhere, really. Netflix in particular, is doing their best to put their own stamp on the genre, peopling the films with male strippers and sexy sentient snowmen and such. Last week, Brie and Kathy gave her a bit of a hard time about it when they were taping the show in Las Vegas, but the Big Guy gave the outfit his full approval. In this case, The Big Guy is Matteo. So Nikki took Matteo for his annual sit-down visit with Santa and ran into Bryan, Buddy, and Birdie there. All three of the kids had far different experiences. Matteo knew precisely what he wanted to ask for, and it caught Santa off guard. Birdie was hanging back to work on some arts & crafts and giving Santa some space, and Buddy was full of energy and Christmas cheer! There might be a fashion controversy brewing in the world of Nikki & Brie. Birdie fell in love with a purse, Brie thinks it's not a good fit, Nikki's a fan and came up with some crafty solutions, but will Brie approve? If Nikki goes rogue, she could end up on Brie's Naughty List this year. Again. Buddy is also working through some big feelings when it comes to having Elf in the Shelf in the house and it might be safe in the Danielson house for Chocolate Sprinkle the Elf much longer. Brie also gives an update on Birdie's school year and the easiest way to sum things up is “How to Get the Ick in 10 Days.” Birdie saw something that her grade school crush did, and it totally changed things in the classroom and out of it. To get ready for Christmas, Nikki & Brie look back at some great memories from their childhood, from food to movies, songs, food, and near misses with Santa himself. Then The Nikki & Brie Show suddenly becomes a True Crime Podcast when Nikki interrogates her sister about some missing headphones. Will Brie comply with the cross-examination or does Nikki have permission to treat the witness as hostile? To close it out, Nikki & Brie share a special Inspiration & Affirmation that's got a lot of heart. Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail! (The Great War's Christmas Truce) *** The case was so mysterious it was even featured on TV's “Unsolved Mysteries” and “America's Most Wanted”: who committed the Christmas murder of Latricia White? And what happened to Lee and Chance Wackerhagen? (An Unsolved Christmas Murder Mystery) *** We're so used to seeing old St. Nick showing up with a big bag of toys for the kiddies – but what if he arrived with another bag full of switches for your parents to use the whole year through if you were on his naughty list? We'll look back at when Santa wasn't purely jolly and jovial, and when he arrived to dole out both presents and punishment! (Santa's Naughty List) *** The Los Feliz murder mansion became the site of a horrifying and sad Christmas tragedy for one California family. (Christmas At The Los Feliz Murder Mansion) *** A haunting holiday mystery took place in England in 1916 when a young bride simply disappeared without a trace. (The Vanishing Christmas Bride) *** A man tries to take on supernatural forces – and ends up as an undead creature who appears as a terrifying Yuletide spirit. On a cold, crisp Christmas Eve at Santa's Village near Los Gatos, California, 4 of the very worst employees prepare to close up for the night. But something has its eye on them in the midst of this holiday cheer, and they may soon find their secret sins closer to the surface than they had hoped. All content, including names, places, events, companies, and etc, which may bear resemblance to entities living or from the vast reaches of unknown space are strictly coincidental. Send us a textIn the aftermath of the Juan Soto signing to the New York Mets, EstoBro comments that he has not seen this much 'beef' between the 5-Buroughs since the fictitious movie, The Warrior (1:35). He also encourages TV to play into the entertaining aspect of the cult classic and see how each New York fan base would fair as different gang groups if they were in the Warriors franchise. In the final entertainment episode for 2024, the show starts with music news and the latest developments of the Sean "Diddy" Combs crimes that list more names in the industry (18:00). The biggest one is highlighted with Jay-Z and his camp. There's also particular attention to Luigi Mangione, a major suspect involved in the murder of Brian Thompson. In internet news, it is quite possible that Hailey Welch could be facing potential jail time (32:15), as her meme coin went live last week and has a historic failure of a debut. The internet tails spinning with this lost investment, and TV explains to the listening audience why this failed and what made it a terrible financial decision. To lighten the mood of the episode, EstoBro relays going to the movies to see Moana 2 and Wicked (43:20), and reporting both of their performances at the box office since Thanksgiving. TV wins the year with the full manifestation of Inside Out 2 being the highest-grossing film of 2024, as EstoBro reads the list of the top 10 films that join Pixar on that list. Finally, revisiting a conversation from the 5th-anniversary episode (56:30), EstoBro wants to play Devil's Advocate to enable 'more reaches' that would be considered Christmas movies. We know some of our dedicated Spotify listeners received their Spotify Wrapped playlists last week.
