SlapperCast Episode 381: "Pride of Deer Month" In this episode, Paddy and Chad recap a busy week of Blaggards shows, including T-Bone Tom's in Kemah, HSF Biergarten in Brenham, and the latest “Blagfeather” show at The Big Top. We talk about the joyful weirdness of playing with different drummers while Turbo prepares for knee replacement surgery, including the return of longtime Blaggard drummer Mike McAloon, Keith York's thunderous and emotional return to the Brenham stage, Justice Swantner of Lonefeather, and our upcoming shows with another former Blaggard, James “Jimbo” Edwards. There's also some big-picture talk about the future of live music, finding new places and new ways to play, the return of our Pirate Festival at HSF, upcoming Ireland dates, and a newly-announced Blaggards/Lonefeather show at Rehab Bar on the Bayou on July 18. Also: Chad's birthday, Patrick's childhood European vacations, deer whistles, Thin Lizzy, Steve Earle, the sacred weirdness of Wednesday night gigs, and our heartfelt plea to PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN and actually experience the show while it's happening. Come see a show! We promise not to stare at our phones... if you don't. ;) At the end of the episode, enjoy the FULL performance of Paddy singing Thin Lizzy's "Killer on the Loose" with Lonefeather last Wednesday at the Big Top! Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, yet funding to support patients can be hard to come by because of the stigma attached to it. While smoking is associated with lung cancer, many people who have never smoked are diagnosed with the disease. Racquel Williams talks with Ride Hard Breathe Easy, an organization that raises funds and awareness for lung cancer patients through community bike rides, as well as a social worker at Fox Chase Cancer Center and a woman who is on her fourth battle with the disease, to understand how we can support lung cancer patients and how to get screened. Get involved or learn more about Ride Hard Breathe Easy at www.rhbe.org. Then, on Shara in the City, Shara is heading out of the city to join the circus! She gets a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the Philly-area premiere of Cirque du Soleil's “Luzia,” at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks now through June 7. Tickets to “Luzia” are available at www.cirquedusoleil.com.
"CLARENCE CARTER SLIPS AWAY ON THE MYSTERY TRAIN"When we speak of the deep soul drenched days when certain performers inhabited a heart full of soul so captivating and special that they were ordained as high priests of mournful and lustful magic, we will always recall Soul legend Clarence Carter.Clarence boarded The Mystery Train today, May 14, following struggles with prostate cancer and a battle with pneumonia and sepsis. He was 90.This blind Southern star from Alabama scored two Top 10 hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s with “Slip Away” and “Patches,” After having hits on the R&B charts (including 1965's “Step By Step” and 1967's “Tell Daddy”), Carter landed on the pop charts – as well as, concurrently, the R&B lists – with 1968's “Slip Away,” a song that highlighted Carter's powerful and emotional baritone voice with a lyric in which the singer implores his married lover for a secret rendezvous Two years later Carter released his biggest pop hit, the Grammy-winning (for Best R&B song) “Patches,” which rose to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mr. Carter also recorded a number of raunchy novelty songs eschewed by mainstream radio but finding success in later years: The 1968 “Back Door Santa” was sampled by Run-D.M.C. for the 1987 single “Christmas in Hollis,” and the even more explicit “Strokin'” from 1986 was featured on the soundtrack for Eddie Murphy's 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor as well as in William Friedkin's 2011 film Killer Joe.Sleep Well Clarence. The first of the six covers that appear on Please Please Me is a mid-tempo ballad called “Anna (Go to Him),” which was written and first recorded by Arthur Alexander. Chances are that most people who hear the version sung by John Lennon have no idea who Arthur Alexander is—but the Beatles certainly knew, and so did the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan: Alexander is reportedly the only songwriter whose tunes have appeared on studio albums by those three hallowed acts. Elvis Presley recorded one of his songs as well—albeit one that Alexander co-wrote—and so did Otis Redding and Tina Turner and Jerry Lee Lewis and Percy Sledge.Don Covay recorded for several labels, including Blaze, Sue, Big Top, Fire, Arnold, Fleetwood, Columbia, Epic and Scepter, releasing 'Popeye Waddle' b/w 'One Little Boy Had Money' in 1962 for Cameo Parkway, which became a hit.Don was, by now, recording solo material, and material under the name of Don Covay and the Goodtimers. He penned the U.S. number 1 single 'Pony Time' for Chubby Checker, wrote a hit song called 'I'm Hanging Up My Heart for You', for the Soul singer Solomon Burke, and wrote for Gladys Knight & The Pips, penning 'Letter Full of Tears', which made the top 20.Don formed partnerships with several associates including Horace Ott and Ronnie Miller. In 1964, when he signed to the Rosemart label. His debut single there with the Goodtimers, 'Mercy Mercy' featured Jimi Hendrix on guitar. The following year, Jimi Hendrix played again on the follow up single 'Take This Hurt Off Me' b/w 'Please Don't Let Me Know'.Clarence Carter didn't have it easy while growing up in Alabama; and being Black and blind was an extra burden, but he has overcome many other obstacles in so many ways. “I feel incredibly good about what I've been able to accomplish, but it was not easy. Our world presents challenges and barriers to success for people with disabilities, but I always wanted more in life and believe that the ADA helped me get to where I am today.”I would like to say that Carter now has three “B's” behind his name, Black, Blind and Blessed. Carter is known for serious Blues music, which includes a string of R&B hits. The songs “Back Door Santa,” “Slip Away,” “Patches,” “Too Weak to Fight” and the dance hall hit “Strokin” are part of his Blues legacy.

While Finey explores the culinary delights of Singapore, it's an old school three ring circus and there is no shortage of clowns, that's for sure. There are no safety nets used here. Roll on up under the Big Top (one of Stephen's recently laundered golf polos). Ken performs stunts, both cunning and not so. For Kev, it's the Tightrope and other Leon Russell songs. The grand finale is Stephen 'Danger is my middle name' Peak * and his amazing death defying fire eating and sword swallowing act. That is something to behold -especially as he washes it down with a seven course banquet from Fongs of Brighton - and in the show stopping finale finale with the wave of a sauce smeared chopstick, SJ peak becomes the elephant in the room. Ta Da! And to think the tattooed man missed all this. Musically, it is the purity of rediscovering a 4IP Top 40 chart from February 1968. No bells or whistles required. Robbie and I first met over two decades ago in the Big Top at the World Champion Blacksmith Competition at the great Calgary Stampede. We have forged a friendship over our passion for the farrier trade and horses, and it is fantastic to share some of that history with you. Robbie has overcome more than most, and his story of coming up in the world is inspirational and fantastic. We also talk about how Robbie looks at a foot for trimming and a tool that he's developed to help that. Sit back and enjoy, we are cleared for takeoff.
State of the Arts Episode 280 is now available on Spotify! My guest this week is award-winning independent filmmaker Devon Reed. This IMDb credited writer, editor and director is known for several acclaimed films including “The Audition”, “O Lucky Day” and “No More Mr. Nice Guy!” Several of his films were honored in well-known festivals including The Lovesick Film Festival, The Brightside Tavern Film Festival and The Nyack International Film Festival. “The Big Top” was his first feature film, which he boldly starred in himself when the lead actor unfortunately had to back out of the role. After this film was completed, Devon took a long break from filmmaking until he discovered Short Cuts NYC. Educated in film study and delightfully ambitious, my creative guest has shown himself to be a versatile, innovative filmmaker. I am honored to have this resourceful, creative talent on my podcast this week!

Trump brings peace in the Middle East, and the left is somehow trying to give credit to Biden, but no one is buying it as Trump arrives in Isreal as a hero. The media clings on to defending Big Tish and claiming that Trump is just weaponizing the DOJ but when the issue is turned around on them, they don't know what to do or say. Fauci is back for some reason, talking about future pandemics. Illegals are getting their medicate shutdown quietly by democrat governors, but shhhhhh, don't say anything. You ever wonder where Sleepy Joe Biden is and how he's doing? No? Just checking. Just another Monday in the Big Top.

In 1944, the Hartford Circus Fire turned the “Greatest Show on Earth” into one of America's deadliest disasters. Flames consumed the Big Top in less than 10 minutes. This episode of An Ounce takes you inside the Hartford Circus Fire — the spark, the panic, and the aftermath. Why was the tent waterproofed with gasoline and paraffin? Why were families trapped under burning canvas? And what lessons from earlier fires like Triangle Shirt waist and Coconut Grove went ignored until it was too late? If this story struck you, please like, subscribe, and share it with someone else who should hear it.
Say goodbye to General Glitterbeard, the first non-binary Inuit tap-dancer to command a carrier group, or Admiral Aquamarine, our pioneering transatlantic pole-vaulter from the Choctaw Nation of drag queens. These aren't leaders; they're LinkedIn virtue-signals with epaulets. Under Biden's Big Top, the military became a freak show where the ringmaster hands out stars for participation trophies—remember that circus where they paraded out every identity flavor like it was Ben & Jerry's gone rogue? Hegseth's fix? Promote warriors, not woke bingo cards. Lethal laugh: If promotions were this easy in combat, we'd have a five-star general who once survived a pillow fight.
