Shaun Murphy und Judd Trump bestreiten das Finale des German Masters im Berliner Tempodrom vor einer tollen Live-Kulisse. We're back for 2026. Happy New Year everyone. Smashing way to kick off the year too, with one of snooker's great voices, Neal Foulds, joining us to preview one of snooker's great events, the Masters. We take a look at every first round match to come at Alexandra Palace, including the clash between defending champion Shaun Murphy and Wu Yize on day one and some absolute crackers like Neil Robertson against Ronnie O'Sullivan. There are various other treats here too, including Neal's own memories of playing at the Masters in the 1980s and 1990s. And we round up some of the other action on the table in recent days, including the 17th maximum break of this season. After winning several amateur titles, including the Welsh Amateur Championship in 1975 and back-to-back English Amateur Championships in 1977 and 1978, Griffiths turned professional in June 1978 at the age of 30. Griffiths's second professional event was the 1979 World Snooker Championship, which he reached as a qualifier. After beating Alex Higgins in the quarter-finals and Eddie Charlton in the semi-finals, he defeated Dennis Taylor in the final by 24 frames to 16, becoming only the second qualifier to win the World Snooker Championship, after Higgins in 1972; only Shaun Murphy in 2005 and Zhao Xintong in 2025 have since emulated the achievement. In 1988, Griffiths reached a second World Championship final. He was tied at 8–8 with Steve Davis but lost the match 11–18.Griffiths reached at least the quarter-finals of the World Championship for nine consecutive years, from 1984 to 1992. He also won the Masters in 1980 and the UK Championship in 1982, completing snooker's Triple Crown. Griffiths was runner-up at the Masters three times and reached the final of the 1989 European Open, where he lost the deciding frame to John Parrott.Although he also won several other tournaments, Griffiths's determination to match his rival Davis led to changes in technique which commentators said cost him his natural flair for playing. He retired from the professional tour in 1996 to become the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association's director of coaching. During his coaching career, he worked with leading players including Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams and Ding Junhui. If you're having difficulty finding what you're looking for in life, have you thought about looking in a completely different place? One that might require walking away from what you have?Of course you can say that's a lot easier said than done, especially if it feels like there's not a whole lot out there for you. For Shaun Murphy, known internationally as Mister Motivation, the idea of staying in place, settling, and subsisting never really worked for him. Fine is a 4-Letter Word, and at every step of the way, standing still has never been “fine” for him.His father was murdered when he was six years old. His mother, an immigrant from Barbados, was poverty-stricken yet resourceful and would go through walls to make sure the family had enough – not much, for sure, but enough – with about $100 per month to spare. And yet, if she was down to her last $20 and met a starving stranger on the street, she'd buy them a good meal. So showing up, working hard without complaining, staying grounded in service, and helping other people – these were the core values the experience imprinted on Shaun.After high school, he briefly went to college then dropped out to serve in the military for eight years. But when he got out, he discovered three unpleasant truths. One, there is not nearly enough support for military servicepeople transitioning to civilian life. Two, after eight years of active duty and living well, all of a sudden he was back to not knowing for sure where his next meal would come from. And third, he found that as a man in his community, a man just couldn't talk about it when things aren't fine. Even if his buddies gave him an understanding ear in the moment, they might embarrass him over it a few weeks down the road. And women would see him as soft.Shaun's next job was working in the mailroom at NYU, where he learned a priceless lesson I'll let him tell you about. Next it was off to Iraq, working as a combat civilian working the postal mission. And then he was introduced to Teach for America and realized this was his calling. By now, he had a good-paying steady job and career prospects. “Impact over income”, Shaun tells us – so he got the degree he needed and took a huge pay cut for the opportunity to spread wealth into the lives of others.Fast-forward a bit, and Shaun found himself a former college dropout who had become a college professor teaching college students how to succeed in college.There's so much more to this story, as I'm going to let Shaun tell you in his own words. Alongside the book's release, Murphy is also dropping a new motivational single, marking the launch of what he calls “Motivation Music” — a genre where personal growth meets beats and bars.   Shaun's journey is anything but typical: From losing his father at age six to serving in the U.S. Army, teaching special education, leading veteran recruitment for the nonprofit Teach For America, and becoming a college professor, he has lived every word he now teaches.
