Send us a textIn this engaging conversation, Bob Sorrentino speaks with Ilene and Gary Modica, authors of 'Tuscany Treasures.' They share their journey of obtaining dual citizenship through Gary's grandfather, their experiences living in Lucca, and the process of selecting the perfect Italian town. The Modicas discuss their unique approach to writing a guidebook focused on local festivals and traditions, as well as the importance of experiencing the authentic Italian culture found in smaller towns. They also provide insights on navigating Tuscany, the challenges of citizenship, and their top recommendations for must-visit towns in the region.TakeawaysTheir guidebook focuses on festivals and local traditions.Smaller towns offer a more authentic Italian experience.Planning is important, but spontaneity can be fun too. Both Eileen and Gary successfully obtained Italian citizenship.Citizenship laws are changing and can be frustrating.Lucca is a charming town often overlooked by tourists.Traveling by train is a viable option in Tuscany. The Modica's recommend several lesser-known Tuscan towns. Northern Italy's cuisine is rich and creamy, while Southern Italy is tomato-based.Culinary preferences are deeply rooted in regional identities in Italy.Italians have specific dining etiquette, such as no cheese on fish.Cappuccino should not be ordered after 11 AM in Italy.Expect no ice in your water; it's not customary in Italy.Living in Italy requires patience due to bureaucratic processes.Seasonal eating is a way of life in Italy, with local produce dictating menus.Train travel is highly recommended for exploring Italy.Airbnb or VRBO are preferred for longer stays in Italy.Cultural immersion is essential for understanding life in Italy.https://ouritalianjourney.comhttp://www.facebook.com/ouritalianjourneyhttp://www.instagram.com/italianjourney/http://www.twitter.com/IleneModicahttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfe0md6bVa2-JKpufLS_J-ghttp://www.pinterest.com/imodicaTurnkey. Affordability is generally NOT a concept much associated with Italy's Tuscan region. The epicenter of all things Renaissance is often depicted in films with heavenly landscapes and hilltop towns, and books often describe its idyllic setting amidst some of Italy's most delightful sensory experiences. Many of us have swooned for decades. But affordable?? Can someone ACTUALLY live in Tuscany affordably? Believe it or not, Gary and Ilene Modica of Our Italian Journey do. They are accomplished authors and bloggers sharing their own journey to a life in Italy with a mission to help enourage others to make a way. Lucca is incredible. In addition to telling us all the secrets the walled city holds, this episode includes some amazing tips and insight into increasing personal comfort in a rental home while lowering costs in heating and cooling. It also covers a topic SO close to my heart: grandparenting from afar. Solutions To Our Waste Problem - Melissa Modica, Waste Harmonica “We're all doing our part, but the big manufacturers producing the products, we need to go back there. We need to say, how can we do this better?... Clients don't realize that waste and recycling all contribute to that whole initiative with ESG...” Melissa Modica on Electric Ladies Podcast A fundamental part of any environmental or ESG (environment-social-governance) initiative has to include managing the waste that our businesses and our lifestyles generate. All that stuff you have delivered? Packaging waste. The truth about the waste management system in the U.S. is pathetic, but there are talented people working on it day and night. Listen to Melissa Modica of Waste Harmonica share some of the creative solutions their clients are using in this enlightening discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. Melissa is Director of Business Development at Wast Harmonica, and brings many years and credentials to the waste management challenge. You'll hear about: How the current recycling system is ineffective and inefficient What manufacturers, cities, municipalities and MURFs – the facilities that manage our waste – need to do better and faster How the Infrastructure Bill & Inflation Reduction Act are helping How ESG standards and reporting systems are accelerating waste management improvements Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Always speak up, you know, put yourself out there. If it's a no, keep going….If you're having a bad day today, let it go. Tomorrow's a new day. Don't bring it into your next workday. You have to just stay focused.” Melissa Modica on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's related Forbes articles here too. My guests this week are Ilene and Gary Modica. In 2010 they left Phoenix, Arizona for a holiday in Italy, and this was not only the start of a love affair with Italy, but also the start of many amazing adventures. I interviewed Ilene and Gary in September 2021, and they revealed that they had travelled to 86 Italian towns and cities, before choosing Lucca as their ‘forever home'. They have documented their travels and adventures and are award winning bloggers, and co-authors of the books, Our Italian Journey, and When your Heart finds its Home. This is a really engaging, open and honest interview in which Ilene and Gary discuss the highs and lows of setting up home in a new country, along with their experience of seeking dual citizenship through Gary's Italian ancestry. We continue our journey immersed in the New Testament this weekend with a very special guest. I have invited a longtime and dear friend, Dr Joseph Modica to come and minister to us. He is a New Testament scholar, author, and has served as professor at Eastern University for decades. I will be interviewing him and we will glean insights from him about the New Testament and how we are to live with Jesus as Lord. Dr Modica sees himself primarily as a pastor-scholar: someone who attempts to model a robust gospel, an ecumenical spirit, a generous orthodoxy, a formative hospitality and respectful conversations. Erika and I have deep affection for him and he was a huge support to me during a particularly hard time in my life. I am sure you'll enjoy getting to know him and you won't want to miss what he has to say.
