We are so excited to welcome The Rev. Wil Gafney, Ph.D. She is the author of A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church and Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to Women of the Torah and of the Throne, as well as many other publications. She is an Episcopal priest, and a delightful human, and we're grateful that she joins us to share her wisdom!
“Stay awake and see all the ways God is partnering with us in these nightmares. Don't sleep on God. Don't sleep on those through whom God works. Don't sleep on disability activists. Don't sleep on angry, sick and tired black women. Don't sleep on LGBTQIA folks who are never going back into those closets unless it's to pull out something fabulous for their next drag show. Don't sleep on children and teens creating the movements that will reform gun culture in America and move the needle on human made ecological carelessness and catastrophe. Don't sleep on the mama bears of trans children. And if you are awake, why don't you join us. There's a long day's work ahead and miles to go before we sleep.” Sermon by the Rev. Wil Gafney, PhD, from worship at 10:00 a.m. on the Palm Sunday, April 2, 2023 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Matthew 21:1–11, and a Gospel Drama based on the Gospel according to Mark. We continue an autumnal reading list with Pastor Clint Schenckloth as he suggests A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Chuch: Year W by Wilda C. Gafney. The book explores women's stories in scriptures.
In this episode, host Angela sits down with Rev. Dr. Wilda Gafney, Bible scholar, episcopal priest and the Right Rev. Sam B. Hulsey Professor of Hebrew Bible at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas. They discuss the importance of gender expansive Bible translation, which incorporates contextual consideration and raises the presence of women and feminine imagery that have been traditionally overlooked or underrepresented. Focusing on her latest work, A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church: Year W, she discusses how using gender expansive language enriches the reading, hearing, and application of the Biblical text. This lectionary also focuses on using explicit feminine God-language as a means of expanding our view and understanding of God. Words matter because they have the power to create or eliminate barriers to inclusion. Guest Bio: Womanist biblical scholar, Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney is the Right Rev. Sam B. Hulsey Professor of Hebrew Bible at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas. She is the author of Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to Women of the Torah and of the Throne, a commentary on Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah in the Wisdom series; Daughters of Miriam: Women Prophets in Ancient Israel; and co-editor of The Peoples' Bible and The Peoples' Companion to the Bible. She is the author of a Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church and translator of its biblical selections; the first two volumes, Year A and W (a standalone volume) were published in August. Volumes B and C are due in 2023 and 2024. She is currently writing a second volume of Womanist Midrash focusing on women in the Prophets. Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney can be followed at www.wilgafney.com. If you've followed this podcast for a while, then you've already heard the name of Rev. Wil Gafney when we spoke with Char Adams, who had written a thesis on Womanist Theology and in this episode, we get to speak directly to the Right Rev. herself! A leading voice and intimidating intellect in the study of Womanism, Rev. Gafney speaks to Forefront about many topics including why the phrase "the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob" neglects the importance of biblical women figures and is indicative of a long history of male-centric theology. Just in time for the holiday season, she also sheds light on approaches to studying both the Advent and Christmas seasons, what the Church means when it differentiates the two, and which figures have been overlooked in the long tradition of retelling the Christmas story.
