In this episode, host Angela sits down with Rev. Dr. Wilda Gafney, Bible scholar, episcopal priest and the Right Rev. Sam B. Hulsey Professor of Hebrew Bible at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas. They discuss the importance of gender expansive Bible translation, which incorporates contextual consideration and raises the presence of women and feminine imagery that have been traditionally overlooked or underrepresented. Focusing on her latest work, A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church: Year W, she discusses how using gender expansive language enriches the reading, hearing, and application of the Biblical text. This lectionary also focuses on using explicit feminine God-language as a means of expanding our view and understanding of God. Words matter because they have the power to create or eliminate barriers to inclusion. Guest Bio: Womanist biblical scholar, Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney is the Right Rev. Sam B. Claudia Love Mair and Christine Valters Paintner have a conversation with Wilda Gafney about her book Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to the Women of the Torah and the Throne. Womanist Midrash is an in-depth and creative exploration of the well- and lesser-known women of the Hebrew Scriptures. Using her own translations, Gafney offers a midrashic interpretation of the biblical text that is rooted in the African American preaching tradition to tell the stories of a variety of female characters, many of whom are often overlooked and nameless. Gafney employs a solid understanding of womanist and feminist approaches to biblical interpretation and the sociohistorical culture of the ancient Near East. This unique and imaginative work is grounded in serious scholarship and will expand conversations about feminist and womanist biblical interpretation.
If you've followed this podcast for a while, then you've already heard the name of Rev. Wil Gafney when we spoke with Char Adams, who had written a thesis on Womanist Theology and in this episode, we get to speak directly to the Right Rev. herself! A leading voice and intimidating intellect in the study of Womanism, Rev. Gafney speaks to Forefront about many topics including why the phrase "the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob" neglects the importance of biblical women figures and is indicative of a long history of male-centric theology. Just in time for the holiday season, she also sheds light on approaches to studying both the Advent and Christmas seasons, what the Church means when it differentiates the two, and which figures have been overlooked in the long tradition of retelling the Christmas story. My guest for this episode is Dr. Wil Gafney. Dr. Gafney is Professor of Hebrew Bible at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas. She is the author of several books including Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to Women of the Torah and of the Throne. She is also an Episcopal priest. We talked about a lot about biblical interpretation, including womanist biblical interpretation. For those who aren’t familiar with the word womanist, it was coined by the author Alice Walker and briefly means a black feminist or feminist of color but you can read her full definition here. This video about womanism is also helpful. This was a rich conversation and if you’ve ever felt like you’ve “failed” at reading the Bible, I hope you find it helpful. You can learn more about Dr Gafney at her web site and also on social media where she is active on Twitter @wilgafney. “Lament is the power of truth that makes the powerful tremble and gives the powerless strength.” A powerful sermon amplifying the voices of women lamenting the abuse and subjugation experienced by women through the ages – and calling the church to break its silent complicity in the creation of a culture that dehumanizes women. I sat down with Wil Gafney to talk about her new book Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to the Women of the Torah and the Throne. We discuss what drew her to the Hebrew Bible, play some conceptual lightning round, ask her which woman from her book needs a major motion picture, discuss translation, the future of Womanist biblical studies, what its like to write a Biblical commentary, how the Hebrew Bible emphasis on remembering can inform contemporary debates about monuments and history, and I introduce a new segment centred on Amazon reviews... we talk about a LOT, and its a whole bunch of fun. We continue with our series Ask Me About My Feminist Agenda and are delighted to have The Rev. Wil Gafney back on the podcast. Her unique approach to The Bible in regards to Race, Gender, and Culture have been a blessing in my own "faith journey." We discuss her ideas on Feminism, Race and Politics as well as her book Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to the Women of the Torah and the Throne.
