What does it mean to belong to your church? What are the standards? Who is in and who is out? Is there room for a process? What happens when someone sins? What about the person who is in sin and just starting to come to church and wants to learn? And what about the person who is considered an insider but whose personal life is a complete mess? What do we do? What is more important: believing? behaving? belonging? Which should come first? And what does that matter? Our guide in our journey today is Dr. Mark Baker. Mark is the J.B. Toews Chair Professor of Mission and Theology at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary and the author of Centered-Set Church: Discipleship and Community Without Judgmentalism (Downers Grove, IL: IVP Academic, 2021) Mark helps us to examine what he calls three different approaches to church. Borrowing from the missiologist Paul Hiebert, he helps us to see what is considered a "bounded set," "fuzzy set," and a "centered" set approach to church. This is a conversation about where you live in the everyday-its about how we judge and shame others, and what the best approach is to ensure flexibility with the process while honoring the purity of obedience. Everyone makes mistakes every now and then, and "I'm only human," is an excuse many of us use. According to Pastor Mark today on Bold Steps Minute, the phrase "I'm only human" isn't actually true for believers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Most all parents constantly feel guilty that they're not doing enough for their kids. For Christian parents, does our faith make any difference when we suffer like this? Theology professor Kelly Kapic's most recent book, "You're Only Human" takes on this constant guilt and self-judgment. He reminds us that human limitations are not the same as sin. As a college professor he has seen first hand how so many of our kids are taught to have those same demands on themselves. Kelly is the author of several books including his award-winning, "Embodied Hope: A Theological Meditation on Pain and Suffering." He reminds us that our stress isn't a time-management problem, it's a theological problem of knowing who God is and how he wants us to live into the world he created. This is part one of two episodes. “Our creativity is better with seasons of rest,” says Kelly Kapic, author of You're Only Human: How your limits reflect God's Design and Why That's Good News and today's guest on Working with Dan Doriani. Rest is a reflection of our limitations, and limitations are more broadly a sign of our humanness. God made us finite, with boundaries to what we can accomplish. Our creatureliness, our dependency, and our finitude lead us toward humility, or at least it ought to. Dan and Kelly work through all the implications of being human in this illuminating conversation. We're giving away a few copies of Kelly's book—click here to enter for the opportunity to win You're Only Human, provided by Brazos Press. We all know that we have limits, that's a part of being human. But most of us see our limits as a curse not a gift. How do our limits reflect God's design? How are our limits actually good news for us? How is it a good thing that we are dependent beings? We'll answer these questions and more with our guest, Dr. Kelly Kapic, a theologian at Covenant College in his book, You're Only Human.Dr. Kelly Kapic is Professor of Theological Studies at Covenant College, where he has taught since 2001. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Embodied Hope and Becoming Whole. ==========Think Biblically: Conversations on Faith and Culture is a podcast from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, which offers degrees both online and on campus in Southern California. Kelly M. Kapic (PhD, King's College, University of London) is a professor of theological studies at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, where he has taught for twenty years. He is an award-winning author or editor of more than fifteen books, including You're Only Human and Embodied Hope, which each won a Christianity Today Book Award. Kapic, a popular speaker, has been featured in Christianity Today and The Gospel Coalition, has worked on research teams funded by the John Templeton Foundation, and contributes to the Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care and various other journals. In this converation, Kelly and I talk about his latest book, You're Only Human, and what it means to celebrate our creaturly limitations as a source of joy and hope. We cover areas related to performance driven Christiantiy, Sabbath, transhumanism, and how the never ending quest to do more, produce more, achieve more, and fulfill all the duties that we're told we need to fulfill is hindering our flourshing as humans and cuts against the grain of how God wants us to live. On today's show, Chong and Dan share what's been going on in our lives during a busy 2022. This gets us to unpack the concept of “busyness”, and how we in modern society constantly strain against our limits and wonder if we are doing “enough”. Drawing on insights from the book You're Only Human, we consider how limits are not an inherently bad thing. We also explore the root of our busyness, namely pride in pursuing our own interests and seeking to be the master of our own lives. We conclude with a call to not be everything, everywhere, all at once.Music by: Julian WanConnect with usInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/ingoodfaithfmTwitter - https://twitter.com/ingoodfaithfmEmail - ingoodfaithmail@gmail.comShow notesYear in review (2:01)Dan's “sophomore slump” in ministryChong's priority stack - core, primary, secondaryPrimary responsibilities (children, church, work) expanding and crowding out other thingsConcept of busyness (16:31)Why do we feel like we are never doing enough?Introduction to Kelly Kapic's bookUltimately a theological problem - misunderstanding who we are and what we were made forYou're Only Human by Kelly KapicFinitude is not sin (25:17)God created us with limits (and it was good); he did not create us with sinCautionary tale: Everything Everywhere All at OnceTime management techniques cover up the core problemIGF 11: The Crisis of FreedomPride as the root cause (45:05)We want to do more and be more, want mastery over all things… i.e., to be like GodHumility as the antidote - to think less of ourselves and to think of ourselves lessGiving thanks for our limitationsConclusion (1:02:09)The insidious effect of busyness - robbing us of joy in the present

The Blessing of Limitations with Kelly Kapic We live in an age of speed and overwhelm, where we often feel we are constantly expected to do more, move faster, work harder, brush past boundaries and limits, and shave margins. When we inevitably fail to meet all demands, we are left feeling not only exhausted and discouraged, but often disoriented and diminished. But what if, instead of seeing our limitations as an impediment, we could learn to view them as a blessing, even a gift? In You're Only Human, theologian and scholar Kelly Kapic provides a theologically grounded approach to understanding and receiving the gift of our human finitude. On this final podcast episode of our Advent series, Kelly Kapic offers us a way to find joy and relief in our incarnational limits and use them to foster greater freedom, spiritual growth, and deeper community. This podcast is an edited version of our Online Conversation from December 2022. Author Kelly Kapic joins Tom and Sean to discuss his new book Your Only Human. If you are continually driven to do more or try harder but end up feeling exhausted, guilty, or ashamed, this conversation is for you. Learn how your limits are part of God's good creation.
Why is it that as human beings we so often see our limits as the enemy of the good life, and not as a helpful frame? Whether we're chafing against 24-hour days, the betrayals of our bodies, our inevitable mortality, or the caps on our relational and psychological energy, it just seems like modern life tempts us to believe that finitude is a weakness to be overcome … perhaps even a sin. But what if that's entirely wrong? Kelly Kapic is a theologian and the author of You're Only Human: How Your Limits Reflect God's Design and Why That's Good News. He joins Anne today to gently correct (and even heal!) the disorder of our weary self-flagellation.
*Originally released on November 11, 2020* Isn't it interesting how we sometimes struggle to extend the same grace we give to other people... to ourselves? It is imperative to hold space to be kind to yourself just as you would to others. In this episode, Shani and Jackie explore questions such as, When is it appropriate to take a break, take a step back, or even just stop and be still? We need to be reminded from time to time: you're human and nothing good comes from running on E! Your greatest accomplishment will only be as good as you are to yourself. You weren't created to do it all & that is GOOD news. Praise God for that!
Have you ever wondered if you're doing enough? It's hard to escape this question. Do you ever feel like you haven't exercised enough, read enough, given enough, spent enough time with people, or spent enough time alone? Thinking about these things is exhausting. It's no wonder that many find life a worry. In the information age, there is always so much more than we can consume. And because we're more connected than ever, we constantly compare ourselves to others. But what if limits aren't bad? What if we've been pushing ourselves towards unachievable goals? What if we've misunderstood God's design for us as finite creatures? In this episode of the podcast, we consider the goodness of our limits as human beings. Episode Notes “Gift” and “good” aren't words that usually come to mind when we think about our limitations. Dr. Kelly M. Kapic, author of You're Only Human: How Your Limits Reflect God's Design and Why That's Good News, thinks this reveals a serious theological problem, writing that denying our finitude “distorts our view of God and what Christian spirituality should look like.” In this episode he joins Dr. Keith Plummer to explain how.

It is rare that I (Zach) am disappointed in an episode that we have recorded of The Vine Conversations podcast. But after having recorded 56 episodes as of today, this one has to be in the top 3. That recommendation should be enough to convince you to listen! Don't judge a podcast by its title! In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Kelly Kapic. Dr. Kapic is the author of You're Only Human: How Your Limits Reflect God's Design and Why That's Good News. We talk about how often our thinking about productivity does not take our finitude into account, how love is one of the most inefficient things you can do, and why our expectations for what we can get done in a day are so out of whack. Quotes “I'm not here denying the reality of sin, but I am here deeply concerned that we have misunderstood what it means to be a creature.” “God is calling us to be human, not superhuman. The Christian life is not superhuman life. It's just human life.” “Probably one of the most inefficient things you can ever do is love. Anything that you love requires your time, your attention, and your energy, and it makes demands on you. And so when productivity and efficiency become our highest value, often what's happening is we're trying to gain control of our environments. And the way you do that is by putting anything that will make demands on you at a distance. And that makes love hard, if not impossible.” “Part of the goodness of creation is we were made to be dependent on God, on our neighbor, and on the earth. That is not a result of sin. Dependence isn't a result of sin. Sin just distorts those dependencies.” Links Get Dr. Kapic's book You're Only Human Learn More about Redeeming Productivity Academy Support the Show. Dr. Kelly Kapic comes on the show to discuss his new book You're Only Human with Brazos Press. We bring his work into conversation with historical theologians, like Tertullian and Augustine.
Jedd sits down with Kelly Kapic, author of the new book, You're Only Human. The two explore the freedom and other gifts found in embracing our human limitations and finiteness. Rooted in a rich vision of both creation and the incarnation, the conversation also offers practical ways to cultivate gratitude, rest and faithful service.
We humans have a complicated relationship with our limits. We constantly push them; expand them; try to circumvent them. But limits are inherent to Creation. Why would God, who could have made the world in an instant, use a process instead? And what does this mean for our own process of sanctification, which we often want to be instantaneous? Matt, Derek, and Alastair jump into these questions with Dr. Kelly Kapic, the author of You're Only Human: How Your Limits Reflect God's Design and Why That's Good News. Don't play God in the life of someone else. You are human. There are so many opportunities to become a hindrance to the growth of others. We sabotage ourselves when we make a habit of looking to people. Eventually, our humanity catches up with us. Set your priorities right.
Work. Family. Church. Exercise. Sleep. The list of demands on our time seems to be never ending. It can leave you feeling a little guilty--like you should always be doing one more thing. Rather than sharing better time-management tips to squeeze more hours out of the day, Kelly Kapic takes a different approach in You're Only Human. He offers a better way to make peace with the fact that God didn't create us to do it all. Kapic explores the theology behind seeing our human limitations as a gift rather than a deficiency. He lays out a path to holistic living with healthy self-understanding, life-giving relationships, and meaningful contributions to the world. He frees us from confusing our limitations with sin and instead invites us to rest in the joy and relief of knowing that God can use our limitations to foster freedom, joy, growth, and community. Readers will emerge better equipped to cultivate a life that fosters gratitude, rest, and faithful service to God. Special Guest: Kelly M. Kapic.
