Embracing Limits: Kelly Kapic on the Gift of Being Human

First Look

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2025 39:18

In this profound and hope-filled conversation, award-winning theologian Dr. Kelly M. Kapic joins us to explore the intersection of mental health, anxiety, and theology. Drawing from his acclaimed book You're Only Human: How Your Limits Reflect God's Design and Why That's Good News, Kapic challenges the cultural narrative that treats human limitations as flaws to be fixed. Instead, he invites us to see our finitude as part of God's good design—a truth that offers deep relief in the face of anxiety, burnout, and unrealistic expectations. We also touch on insights from his other works, including Embodied Hope and Becoming Whole, as we discuss how accepting our God-given limits can lead to greater spiritual health, emotional honesty, and a more grounded life. If you're wrestling with perfectionism, exhaustion, or a pressure to "do it all," this episode is for you. We talk about why our limits are not sins, the theological roots of anxiety and performance culture, how embracing finitude opens the door to real community and grace, and what it means to be fully human in a fast-paced, success-driven world. Join us for a refreshing and compassionate take on what it means to be whole in a world that prizes productivity over presence. Check out Kelly's book: You're Only Human Also, see his new 40 day devotional: You Were Never Meant to Do It All

Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.”   Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”   Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“   Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“   Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Rather than sharing better time-management tips to squeeze more hours out of the day, Kelly Kapic takes a different approach in You're Only Human. He lays out a path to holistic living with healthy self-understanding, life-giving relationships, and meaningful contributions to the world. He frees us from confusing our limitations with sin and instead invites us to rest in the joy and relief of knowing that God can use our limitations to foster freedom, joy, growth, and community. I know scripture commends us to sacrificially serve the church, but I am just feeling exhausted by it all. Any practical and spiritual advice? 2. What was God’s very first created being if it wasn’t Jesus Christ? 3. I have many friends who are involved with the “deliverance movement,” where folks are said to be delivered from oppressive and demonic forces. According to the scripture I do not see anything in regard to this need in the church. Why is this taught, what are your thoughts? 4. I am not sure what is meant by “if you break one commandment you have broken them all. If that is the case, then what exactly is the significance of the 10 commandments?   Resources Ordinary: Sustainable Faith in a Radical, Restless World by Michael Horton Conversations with Jehovah’s Witnesses: A Friendly Approach to Sharing the Truth about God and the Bible by Ron Rhodes The God Who Gives: How the Trinity Shapes the Christian Story by Kelly M. Episode 504 | Adriel Sanchez and Bill Maier answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com Key questions answered in today's show: 1. I have a couple of friends who say that Jesus has come to them and spoken to them in their dreams. Most recently, they said that Jesus came to them and said UFO’s were real and angel’s chariots. I kind of cringe any time I hear that. I wanted to know, what are your thoughts on Jesus coming to people in their dreams? 2. As an introvert, I’ve actually enjoyed being at home more these days. I actually worry about when life goes back to normal because I don’t want to lose the joy and contentment I’ve been experiencing. Is this wrong? 3. Is thinking about our Triune God as an egg Modalism? The egg, egg white, and shell are three separate things but still one egg, like how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three separate things but all God. Is this a valid way of thinking or not? 4. I asked Jesus Christ to be my savior a while back, but I can’t stop drinking, smoking, and cussing. I’ve tried everything. What can I do? Episode 448 | Adriel Sanchez and Bill Maier answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com Key questions answered in today's show: 1. If Jesus is still embodied (albeit in a glorified body) does this mean that He is not omnipresent?  2. What is the sign of the coming of the Christ in Matthew?  3. In John 7, Jesus's brothers ask Jesus to go to Judea. In verses 6 through 9 Jesus explains that He "is not going up to this festival." Then in verse 10 Jesus does the opposite of what he told his brothers! After Jesus's brothers left for the festival, then Jesus went privately "in secret". Whatever Jesus's reason was to go, Jesus lied to his brothers! I just am so disturbed by this passage because it seems like what we call a " little white lie."  4. Should we move to attend a specific pastor's church?  Resources The God Who Gives: How the Trinity Shapes the Christian Story by Kelly M. Should Christians Give Money to Panhandlers?

Episode 383 | Dr. Michael Horton and Adriel Sanchez answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com Key questions answered in today's show: 1. How should Christians handle panhandlers? Are there Biblical principles for giving to people who come to us and look down and out? 2. I’m really confused about predestination in Ephesians 1. Is Paul saying that everyone who is saved is predestined? 3. I was raised in a Christian family, but I have only been actively following Jesus for the last couple of years, since I started college. What I have discovered is that it seems really hard to make progress as a Christian. Is it normal for Christians to struggle with the same sins over and over?  4. Where was Jesus for the 3 days after he died on the cross. I happen to believe that he went to hell to pay the full price for our sins. I would love to know what you guys think. I have a few Scriptures in mind when I think about my answer. In Luke, Jesus said he had not yet ascended to his Father after his resurrection and thus he did not go to heaven? He also said that as Jonah was in the belly in the whale so shall the son of man be. Paul said that he who ascended first descended. And cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree. I’m under the perspective that he paid the full price, which was hell.
