How do you read the Bible? Most of us assume we already know: we read to learn what happened, to understand what a passage means, or to find a principle to apply. In this episode, host Dan Hummel is joined by guest Jeff Dryden, professor of biblical studies and department chair at Covenant College, to ask whether Scripture is inviting us to something deeper.Dryden is the author of A Hermeneutic of Wisdom: Recovering the Formative Agency of Scripture (Baker Academic), which argues that the whole Bible — not just its "wisdom" books — is written to shape our deepest loves and convictions, not merely to hand us information or timeless principles. Dan and Jeff talk through why biblical scholars are trained to tell us what a text meant rather than what it means, how that division of labor between biblical studies and theology leaves a formation-shaped gap, and what philosophers like Hans-Georg Gadamer and Michael Polanyi have to offer pastors and everyday readers trying to close it.Along the way: why Paul is a far less systematic thinker than popular imagination suggests, what Mark's Gospel is doing to our idols of Jesus, and why "the Bible wasn't written to us, but it was written for us" is true — and doesn't go far enough. In this episode:Why biblical scholars are trained to ask what a text meant, not what it means — and what gets lost in that division of labor Why the Bible is always "applied theology" — never abstract, formal theology — and what that means for how a sermon should be builtReading Mark's Gospel as an exercise in dismantling our idols of who Jesus isHans-Georg Gadamer's idea of Wirkungsgeschichte ("history of effects") and why we can never step outside the tradition we read fromAugustine's test for biblical understanding: if you haven't grown in love of God and neighbor, you haven't understood a wordWhy the historical-critical and grammatical-historical methods — liberal and conservative alike — share the same modern DNAWhat's next for Dryden: a forthcoming book on evangelical moralism and legalism as counterfeit versions of the gospelAbout the guest:Jeff Dryden (PhD, Cambridge University) is professor of biblical studies and chair of the department at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, where he has taught for nearly two decades. Why do so many people reach midlife feeling disconnected from themselves? In this powerful and deeply human conversation, Brian Dixon — known professionally as Dixon — shares his journey from quiet misalignment and emotional drift to reclaiming purpose, courage, and authenticity later in life.Dixon, is an adventurer, author, speaker, and founder of The Someday NOW Project, a human re-engagement movement dedicated to helping people reconnect with purpose, energy, and the parts of themselves they may have lost to burnout, routine, and misalignment. After a life-threatening pulmonary embolism following a mountain bike accident, Dixon realized the life he was living no longer aligned with who he truly was. At 52 years old, he trained for two years before launching a paraglider solo off Lookout Mountain in Colorado, a moment that became symbolic of reclaiming his voice, identity, and future.Today, Dixon helps individuals, leaders, and organizations recognize the signs of disengagement and reconnect with meaningful action, ownership, and authentic living. He is the author of Hold My Beer: I'm Going Back in the Game.Together, we explore:why so many men silently struggle in midlifethe emotional cost of always playing the provider or superhero rolewhat Dixon calls the “Man-Zombie Epidemic”the importance of challenge, adventure, and authentic livingand how reconnecting with yourself can completely change your lifeThis episode is deeply honest, inspiring, and relevant for anyone who has ever felt disconnected from themselves or stuck living a life that no longer fits.Find Dixon Here:gowithdixon.com/facebook.com/DixonColoradoRealtorlinkedin.com/in/briandixonstoryteller/youtube.com/@LiveWhereYouPlayTVBook:Hold My Beer: I'm Going Back In The Game -  https://gowithdixon.com/#container16Find Marisa online:Website: https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmarisaleenaismith/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmarisaleenaismith/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/marisa.lee.12YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@avoiceandbeyond3519/videosResources:MLN Coaching Program: https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/mentoring/Schedule a Free Clarity Call: https://calendly.com/info-56015/discovery Gratitude Journal: https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/product/in-gratitude-my-daily-self-journal/Download your eBook: Thriving in a Creative Industry: https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/product/ebook-thriving-in-a-creative-industry-dr-marisa-lee-naismith/Like this episode? Before Laurel Canyon became a myth, it was a room. This is Part 2 of my deep dive into David McGowan's Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon: Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & the Dark Heart of the Hippie Dream. In Part 1, we looked at Laurel Canyon from above: the military family backgrounds, Lookout Mountain, and the strange feeling that the official hippie dream had something sitting over it in the hills. In this episode, we go inside the rooms. This part gets into Vito Paulekas and the Freaks, the strange dancers and scene-makers who helped create the atmosphere around the early Los Angeles counterculture. These were not just random people in the crowd. They helped make the scene feel like something was happening before the public fully understood what the “hippie dream” even was. Then the story gets darker. We talk about Godo Paulekas, Kenneth Anger, Lucifer Rising, Bobby Beausoleil, occult film, performance, young runaways, unsafe rooms, and the question that keeps coming up throughout this whole series:What kind of freedom was this, and who was actually safe inside it?This episode covers:Vito PaulekasThe FreaksGodo PaulekasKenneth AngerLucifer RisingBobby BeausoleilLaurel CanyonThe Sunset StripThe early countercultureThe dark side of the hippie dreamThis series is not about pretending every connection proves one giant conspiracy. What happens when you wake up one day and realize you've been asleep for 20 years successful on paper, but dead inside? For Brian "Dixon" Dixon, that realization came after a near fatal pulmonary embolism. But it didn't have to. In this powerful episode of Productivity Smarts, host Gerald J. Leonard sits down with Brian Dixon, Colorado based adventurer, speaker, and author of the upcoming book Hold My Beer, I'm Going to Change My Life. Dixon shares his raw, personal journey from decades of misalignment, chasing the wrong career, surrendering his dreams, and becoming a "man zombie," to a life changing breakthrough at age 52, when he finally launched a paraglider off Lookout Mountain, a dream he had buried for 25 years. Gerald and Dixon explore the "provider trap" that causes so many men to lose themselves, the small signals of misalignment we ignore until a crisis hits, and the antidote: Hold My Beer energy, a non negotiable, committed launch toward the one thing that still lights you up. Dixon offers a simple "man zombie test" to check in with yourself, explains why most people never recover their fire, and proves that it's never too late to stop talking about the old days and start living the new ones. Whether you're feeling stuck, burned out, or just vaguely numb, this episode will give you the permission and the push to say, "Hold my beer, I've got something I need to do." Ready to wake up? Listen now and learn how one committed launch can start a positive flywheel that changes everything.   What We Discuss [00:00] Introduction [02:01] Meet Brian "Dixon" and his upcoming book [04:39] The "hold my beer" moment that changed everything [05:35] Living 20 years in misalignment and autopilot [06:46] Financial collapse and personal reset after 2008 [07:42] The life-threatening health scare that sparked change [09:12] Rediscovering a lost dream: paragliding off Lookout Mountain [10:56] Turning one decision into a life transformation [13:55] Defining "hold my beer energy" [14:27] The hidden danger of the provider trap [17:55] Losing yourself in responsibility and routine [19:00] Why making time for yourself is essential [20:52] How to realign your life before a crisis hits [22:09] The "man zombie test" and self-check questions [24:05] Tackling misalignment one decision at a time [25:11] Why commitment, not interest, drives transformation [26:19] Building a positive momentum flywheel [27:08] Reigniting passion at any stage of life [30:13] Signs you're losing your fire and how to reverse it [31:56] It's never too late: overcoming the "I'm stuck" mindset [34:35] Where to find Dixon and what's next  Notable Quotes [05:56] "My passion and my fire for life went to sleep, and I call it a man zombie stage. I basically went into autopilot for 20 years." – Brian Dixon [08:35] "After the pulmonary embolism, I said: I am halfway through my life. I am 44 years old and I have been asleep this whole time." – Brian Dixon [15:21] "I feel like men can lose themselves inside of that provider ship piece – they don't have any guardrails for their own dreams." – Brian Dixon [21:56] "The big thing is, it's tough for men to actually know they're asleep. If you're taking a nap in the middle of the night, you don't know you're asleep." – Brian Dixon [22:23] "When is the last time you did something just for you? Not for your boss, not for your spouse, not for your kids? These check-in questions can help you avoid the hospital." – Brian Dixon [24:20] "Eat the elephant one step at a time. Find the one thing that's most misaligned. Then hold my beer – non-negotiable. Nothing's going to stop me." – Brian Dixon [24:44] "When you launch a paraglider, we call it a committed launch. Life or death. That's how you should treat Hold My Beer." – Brian Dixon [30:56] "If you ever find yourself where most of your conversation is about how things used to be, that's a trigger signal. Your fire is going out. You should be talking about what you're planning on doing right now." – Brian Dixon [31:35] "You don't quit snowboarding when you get old. You get old because you quit snowboarding." – Brian Dixon [33:59] "It's never too late if you can kindle that fire again." – Brian Dixon   Resource and Links Brian "Dixon" Dixon Website: www.gowithdixon.com Book: Hold My Beer, I'm Going to Change My Life (coming Fall)   Productivity Smarts Podcast Website - productivitysmartspodcast.com Gerald J. This is Part 1 of my deep dive into David McGowan's Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon: Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & the Dark Heart of the Hippie Dream.I kept seeing clips of Joe Rogan bringing up this book, and people started asking me what it was actually about. So instead of pretending I had a neat little opinion based on screenshots and vibes, I read it.This episode starts with the big picture: Laurel Canyon, the official hippie dream, the strange number of military-family backgrounds around the scene, and Lookout Mountain, the secret military film facility that sat above the same hills later mythologized as the birthplace of peace, love, folk rock, psychedelic rebellion, and the California counterculture.I'm not treating every connection in the book as proof of one giant master plan. Some of this is documented history, some of it is David McGowan's interpretation, some of it is speculation, and some of it is just so weird that even if you stay skeptical, you still have to sit with it for a second. This series is about the question underneath the book:What if the soundtrack of freedom was recorded inside a haunted house?Part 1 covers:Laurel CanyonDavid McGowanJoe Rogan's interest in the bookThe dark side of the hippie dreamMilitary families in the countercultureLookout Mountain LaboratoryHollywood, music, and covert powerThe beginning of the Laurel Canyon mythMore parts coming soon.Website: https://idiotmystic.comBlog: https://idiotmystic.com/blogDiscord: https://discord.gg/dXKjhZrZmMInstagram: https://instagram.com/idiotmysticTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@idiotmystic

Brian Dixon: Why Most Men Drift After College and How To Avoid It

Brian Dixon — most folks call him Dixon — is a Colorado-based Adventurer, Author, and Speaker, and a recovering midlife man-zombie. For twenty years, he lived misaligned — playing the superhero for everyone but himself. In 2014, a life-threatening mountain bike crash ended years of quiet drift. Alignment took longer — until he made a decision most men his age would never consider. At fifty, he chased down a dream from his youth. He found a mentor, committed to years of training, and flew a paraglider solo off Colorado's Lookout Mountain. It might sound like a midlife cliché. It wasn't—it was clarifying. That flight reset his True North. Everything he teaches fits into a simple mantra: Wake up. Realign. Move forward. Today, he helps men break free from misalignment — so they can Wake Up. Realign. Move Forward. In episode 653 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out how a driven, high-functioning guy ends up asleep at the wheel, what happened with his pulmonary embolism after the mountain bike crash, why he launched a paraglider solo off Lookout Mountain, why men drift after college and how to avoid it, what does misalignment look like in your twenties, how you lead others without losing yourself, what does "True North" actually mean for a 21-year-old, how to distinguish between destructive risk and growth-producing risk, what is the moment men give up but never talk about, and what daily habits keep a man awake instead of drifting. Enjoy!

When you arrive you can rent all the gear that you need, have a quick lesson from their staff, and then continue to learn for yourself on the hill. It is the perfect family activity. People come from all over to say that they have skied in AL. I recently was able to check it out for myself and we had a blast. They offer day and night skiing when they are able to blow snow. There is typically a short window of time that they are able to open in the winter because it is in the South. Ep. 489: Amanda Ripley on Why and How We Get Trapped in Conflict

MinistryWatch Podcast

Have you noticed that we live in contentious times? I certainly have. Our politics is polarized. Even our church life is too often contentious and ideological, with positions being driven as much by tribalism as by Scripture or a principled theology. Why is there so much conflict today, and is there a way out of it? Amanda Ripley thinks there is. She's an investigative journalist who has written for Slate, The Atlantic, and many other publications. She is also trained in conflict mediation, and she teaches other journalists how to cover high conflict situations in a professional and ethical way. Her book High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out came out in 2021, but I am just discovering it, and when I read it – a few months ago – I thought it explained a lot of what is going on today in the world of media, politics, and religion. Amanda Ripley doesn't write for Christian audiences, per se, and she draws on traditions that are not explicitly Christian for many of her examples and lessons. That said, I found this book to be both enlightening and nourishing, and I think you'll enjoy this conversation with her. Amanda Ripley spoke to me from her home in the Washington, DC, area, and I spoke with her from Covenant College, on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, where I was speaking to students at Summit Ministries. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm your host, Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.

Trigger Warning:In Part 2 of our exploration into Lookout Mountain, we delve into the mysteries hidden behind its walls in the Hollywood Hills. This area harbors secrets from the 1960s and 70s, a period where the darker aspects of Hollywood intersected with military operations and top-secret projects, including disturbing mind control experiments. In a previous podcast episode, I provided a detailed account of Lookout Mountain's enigmatic past. Where I discuss its fascinating journey from a film studio and military Air Force station to its current ownership by actor Jared Leto.In this podcast, we approach this compelling story from an exceptionally personal and impactful viewpoint. I am privileged to have with me a guest, Nancy, who directly experienced these harrowing events as a young girl within the building that is now a private residence near Wonderland Avenue. She will share her early induction into secretive rituals and recount the day she was taken to the "special school" on Lookout Mountain, where she witnessed the sinister underbelly of Hollywood. While her life has been profoundly redeemed and transformed by her faith in Jesus, she feels a strong calling to share her story to educate our listeners about the depths of evil and the ultimate triumph of His light.*Amy is a Christian Counselor and Coach:-To schedule an appointment: https://www.biblicalguidancecounseling.com/appointmentsAmy teaches online verse by verse Bible studies:Rumble link: https://rumble.com/c/BibleStudywithEyesontherightInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/eyesontheright4.0/https://www.instagram.com/eyesontherightpodcast/

Are you living under the constant pressure of feeling like you should be doing MORE? Or feeling like you should BE more? That you're always letting people down. Or letting GOD down. If guilt and overwhelm have become a big part of your life, I'm glad you found this episode! As my guest today writes in his new book, You Were Never Meant to Do It All: A 40-Day Devotional on the Goodness of Being Human, “God has not designed us to do everything, be everywhere, or know everything. We can value our work, our bodies, and our relationships without thinking we must have endless energy, always be strong, or have unending emotional reserves. God simply didn't create us in this way.” I'm excited to introduce you today to Dr. Kelly Kapic. Eric and I met Kelly and his wife, Tabitha, through mutual friends while our daughter was attending Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, where Dr. Kapic is a professor of theological studies. Kelly is also a speaker and an award-winning author. His books have greatly impacted our family, so for this episode, I asked my husband Eric to join me in this helpful conversation about accepting and finding freedom in our limitations as humans. There is much to be gained by leaning into God's good design for us. To realize that we CAN'T “do it all”, not because something is wrong with us, but because we are created to be dependent on God and on others. Only God Himself is without limits and fully in control. As we more deeply settle into this way of thinking and living, we can experience greater growth, a deeper sense of community, and more peace, rest, and JOY! You can learn more about Dr. Kapic's work and writing here: https://www.covenant.edu/academics/bible/faculty/kapic.html Also, don't forget that as a Fighting for Joy listener you can receive 10% off of your first month of counseling services from BetterHelp, my podcast sponsor.
