In this week's episode of Only Human, Dr. Kern covers a couple of stories involving basic OSHA required safety precautions that were ignored in three incidents. The first involves a worker who fatally fell from a scaffold in Madison, WI, the second a hazardous chemical spill at a plant in Toledo, OH, and the last a grain elevator explosion in Nebraska. He also covers worker issues involving companies disguising the efforts of exploited call center workers in the Philippines as “AI” and arguments on both sides of the issue of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a potential solution to raise people above the “basic survival” level of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to improve personal performance, self-actualization, and better contribute to society. Finally, he muses on the necessity of modern “technology detox” retreats versus building better daily habits which include breaks from technology to improve our focus and mental health.

The podcast is re-branding! Over the last few years, we've pursued the goal of bridging the gap between who you are today and who you are capable of being by focusing on reducing human error and improving human performance from a mostly philosophical stance. Starting today, we're centering practical application and real-world scenarios through the lens of the strategies and techniques we've been discussing. In this episode, Tony reviews an altercation between on-duty air traffic controllers at Ronald Reagan Airport, the experiences shared recently by the astronauts who were stranded on the International Space Station for the last nine months, and what both of these stories have to teach us about being Only Human.
Greg Strand joins Hans Madueme, associate professor of theological studies at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, to debrief the 2025 EFCA Theology Conference, and unpack Hans' plenary message from the conference ("A Theological Meditation on Sin and Freedom: Justification, Concupiscence and the Quest for Godliness") and why it matters to the local church.Watch (or listen to) Hans' full message from the 2025 Theology Conference here. For further reading:You're Only Human by Kelly M. Throughout the season of Lent, we're releasing weekly episodes focused on spiritual practices. We live in an age of speed and overwhelm, where we often feel we are expected to do more, move faster, work harder, brush past boundaries and limits, and shave margins. When we inevitably fail to meet all demands, we are left feeling not only exhausted, but often diminished."Part of what you start to see is ... our limits ... is actually what fosters our relationship with God, with others, even with the earth ... it's the stuff of life." But what if, instead of seeing our limitations as an impediment, we could learn to view them as a blessing, even a gift? In You're Only Human, theologian and scholar Kelly Kapic provides a theologically grounded approach to understanding and receiving the gift of our human finitude. He offers us a way to find joy and relief in our incarnational limits and use them to foster greater freedom, spiritual growth, and deeper community. This podcast is drawn from our Online Conversation from December 2022. Uncertainty is a major feature of the modern world. We have unprecedented access to a connected network of global information that we must constantly parse, analyze, and decipher. This adds a relentless complexity that our brains did not evolve to handle and creates a Petri dish of self-induced stress. In this week's Only Human with Dr. Tony Kernpodcast, our host uses a personal fishing story to explore the ways that extra information and complexity creates stress even in places where we once felt peace. He also shares ways that uncertainty can be good for us by encouraging flexibility in our thinking and how we approach problems. Finally, he shares his four-step process to survive and thrive in a world of relentless uncertainty. There's a lot of information available out there—much of it unhelpful—but you don't want to miss these valuable insights.
Max talks with Dr. Tony Kern about human error, airmanship, and the hidden threats pilots pose to themselves. Tony shares how his passion for understanding error began with the tragic loss of two of his former B-1 bomber students in 1992. The crash, attributed to "a failure of airmanship," prompted him to research the elusive meaning of that term—work that eventually led to his book Redefining Airmanship. Beyond medical transport, they assist military veterans by flying them to camps designed for rehabilitation, as well as special events like Major League Baseball games. They also provide commercial airline tickets, through partnerships with JetBlue and Southwest, as backup transportation. Tony emphasizes that even the best pilots are “one decision away from disaster” and discusses how errors often don't result in negative outcomes, which falsely reinforces bad habits. He introduces the concept of a “personal fingerprint of error” and advocates tracking errors—both in and out of the cockpit—to identify behavioral patterns. The conversation also touches on complacency, fatigue, and how inexperienced team members can sometimes better sense danger than veterans. He recalls the Thirtymile Fire as a case study in poor decision-making and leadership under stress. Tony concludes by stressing the instructor's responsibility not to pass along a faulty product, and encourages pilots to be relentless students of their own behavior. He also shares resources from his company, Convergent Performance, and his books, podcast, and LinkedIn newsletter. Modern technology enables instant global communication, microwave meals, and AI-generated artwork… but conveniences like these also come at a cost. In this episode of Only Human with Dr. Tony Kern, we explore why so many people find it difficult to connect the dots between their individual actions and any sort of meaningful impact, resulting in an epidemic of indifference. Far too often, we only make that connection when our actions or inactions lead to terrible consequences—for our personal lives, for our careers, and occasionally in the form of tragedies like January's midair collision above Reagan National airport. Tune in to hear Tony's thoughts on this accident and how the solution to all these problems is something we've lost in the Age of Apathy and Convenience: the pursuit of high precision performance.
Human beings possess a dangerous flaw in our inherent desire to confirm our current assumptions and perspectives. This flaw is amplified in the modern world through social media, like-minded friend groups, partisan news, etc. to create echo chambers that reinforce, rather than challenge, our pre-existing beliefs. In this episode of the Only Human with Dr. Tony Kern podcast, we explore the importance of mental agility—our ability to think flexibly, adapt, and question our own perspectives. This discussion covers both the dangers of a rigid perspective and how keeping an open mind when reviewing personal experience, discerning facts from opinions, and listening to opposing viewpoints keeps our brains healthy and encourages us to develop “strong opinions, loosely held.”

Suzanne's Giesemann's path from military officer to spiritual advisor was anything but conventional. Her 20-year Navy career saw her rise to the role of aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She flew on Air Force One with the President, met world leaders, and bore witness to pivotal moments in history, including the tragic events of 9/11. It was a life of service, discipline, and precision. But Suzanne's transformation began with profound personal loss. The death of her stepdaughter, Susan, who was struck by lightning while serving as a U.S. Marine, left Suzanne questioning the nature of life and the afterlife. This heartbreak became the catalyst for her spiritual awakening. Determined to find answers, Suzanne embarked on a journey of meditation, self-discovery, and mediumship training that eventually revealed her own innate ability to connect with the spirit world.Suzanne's teachings are grounded in the understanding that science and spirituality are not at odds but are deeply intertwined. She often draws upon principles of quantum physics to explain the mechanics of mediumship and consciousness, bridging the gap between the seen and unseen worlds. For those hesitant to embrace spiritual concepts, this scientific foundation provides a reassuring anchor. This week, you'll learn how death inspired Suzanne to learn more about the spiritual existence, how she reconnected with a dear friend who had crossed to the spirit realm, and the connection between physics and spirituality.LEARN MORE:> > Visit Suzanne Giesemann's website (http://www.suzannegiesemann.com)NSLS MEMBERS ONLY:> > Listen to the bonus episode to learn what Suzanne hopes readers will gain from her new book, and why Suzanne disagrees with the expression, “We're Only Human” (http://members.nsls.org/audio/suzanne-giesemann)Mentioned in this episode:NSLS members!

The response was so positive, and they enjoyed it so much, they decided to continue booking shows and writing songs. They recorded and released a homemade CD titled Rise Up; which sold over 1,000 copies at local shows. Shortly after, friend and local musician, Sawyer Rikard, joined the band on bass guitar in 2015, bringing their stage sound and performance to another level. In March of 2016, they released a follow-up EP, All Fall Down, which debuted #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. They soon began touring and being invited to festivals such as Rocklahoma, SXSW, Rockfest, Dirtfest, Loud in Lima, etc.In 2018, they joined forces with Legend Recordings, and released another EP, Ascension, which became their biggest release yet with singles “Back to Life” and “Killer Queen” landing on the radio. Shortly after, they added local powerhouse drummer (and childhood friend of Sawyer), Dakota Watson, to form the rhythm section Casandra, Paul, and Sawyer had always dreamed of. In 2019, they recorded standalone single “Love Will Win” with producer/videographer, Jake Jones, which gained even more radio play, and placed them on numerous national tours; supporting artists such as Tantric, Saliva, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dokken, and being added to the KISS Kruise and NAMM Show. The band continued to write, record, livestream, and perform wherever they could during the 2020 pandemic, and only continued to gain traction and fans from all over the world. Reaching out on a whim, they won over the attention of renowned producer/songwriter, Elvis Baskette, and shortly thereafter, entered the studio to record their first professionally made, full length album, Street Magic, in 2021. This release proved to be a monumental success, skyrocketing their audience with over 5 million views and streams across all platforms. Radio singles from this release alone include “For the Record”, “Despicable”, “Repeat Offender”, “Can't Quench the Fire”, and “Only Human”.Paralandra has since toured the country on multiple headlining runs, and is constantly supporting iconic bands such as Warrant, Lita Ford, Firehouse, Last in Line, and countless others with no end in sight. They reentered the studio with Elvis Baskette in 2023 and recorded their 2nd studio album, which is due April 4, 2024. They plan for this release to be just as big, if not bigger than the last, as they continue to record, write, tour, and work tirelessly to build their brand, and change the direction of rock music to be a force for good in this world.
