Ask most Jews what their favourite holiday is and you'll hear Hannukah, Passover, Purim, Sukkot—maybe even Yom Kippur for some diehards. But despite being one of the big three holidays in the Hebrew Bible, the upcoming festival of Shavuot doesn't usually make the cut. Which is a shame, because some of its themes feel more relevant than ever. Today, Shavuot is about nationhood, covenant and belonging. It's a time to commemorate the biblical revelation at Sinai, when the Israelites were forged into a national collective through an eternal covenant with God. It's also the festival when Jews read the Book of Ruth, which tells the story of what it means to be part of the Jewish people in a very different way. Today on Not in Heaven, we discuss a new white paper from the Shalom Hartman Institute called “Building Communities of Belonging: Jewish Identity, Conversion, Intermarriage, and Adjacency.” Its goal is to help empower Jewish communities to speak openly about, and set policies around, Jewish status and affiliation in a way that feels aligned with a community's norms and values. According to the Pew Research Center, among Jews who married between 2010 and 2020, 61 percent are intermarried; when Orthodox Jews are omitted, that rate jumps to 72 percent. Contrary to historic assumptions, many families of mixed heritage remain committed, active participants in Jewish community life. One implication, the paper proposes, is the emergence of a whole new population of individuals we might call "Jewish adjacent"—including the networks of spouses, grandparents, family members, and others who are deeply involved in the Jewish community, but who neither identify as Jewish nor have Jewish status conferred upon them by the community. Nonetheless, they may be raising Jewish children, serving on synagogue boards or teaching in Jewish institutions, attending seders and shiva, and regularly dedicating their personal resources, time and labour to Jewish communal activities and causes. How can Jewish communities have open and honest conversations about competing notions of identity, status, membership, and belonging in the Jewish community? Ezra 10:9-44 New International Version 9 Within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin had gathered in Jerusalem. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.” 12 The whole assembly responded with a loud voice: “You are right! We must do as you say. 13 But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because we have sinned greatly in this thing. 14 Let our officials act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at a set time, along with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, opposed this. 16 So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to investigate the cases, 17 and by the first day of the first month they finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign women. Those Guilty of Intermarriage 18 Among the descendants of the priests, the following had married foreign women: From the descendants of Joshua son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah. 19 (They all gave their hands in pledge to put away their wives, and for their guilt they each presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.) 20 From the descendants of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah. 21 From the descendants of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel and Uzziah. 22 From the descendants of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad and Elasah. 23 Among the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer. 24 From the musicians: Eliashib. Canada's Jewish community is growing—but also becoming more diverse, more intermarried and older. As the 2026 census gets underway this month, Canadian sociologist Rachel Margolis explains why filling it out—especially the long form questionnaire—matters, and what it will reveal about Jewish life in Canada today. The census gathers data on religion, ethnic origin, languages spoken at home and household composition—information researchers use to track key demographic shifts. According to Margolis, a sociology professor at Western University in London, the most recent census shows 83 per cent of Canadian Jews identify religiously as Jewish, down from 89 per cent two decades ago, while the share identifying as Jewish by ethnic origin only has risen to 17 per cent (from 11 per cent). She also finds that 50 per cent of couples in households with at least one Jewish partner are now interfaith—up from about 40 per cent 20 years ago. Margolis expects the next census to show an even more diverse community, shaped in part by recent immigration from Israel following Oct. 7, as well as from Ukraine and Latin America. Various types of wine, and when they are permitted -- mostly they are prohibited, but not necessarily so, for example, if something is prepared prior to the Jew ever appearing as a recipient of the wine, or ointment, or other derivative products. Plus, the distinction between a healing beverage and plain old regular beverage -- and whether they can be prepared on Shabbat. Plus, concerns about how making such beverages can go wrong. Also, the distinction between wine and beer - which is usually acceptable. And the concern about social mingling that can lead to intermarriage. Also, leaving liquid and beverages uncovered - and the risk of the snakes leaving venom in the water.

Elisha cared for the Shunammite woman after he raised her son from the dead by warning her to sojourn elsewhere during a famine. When she returned, the king of Israel showed that he was not entirely faithless by returning her family land. Elisha began to fulfill the ministry of Elijah by telling Hazael that he would be king in Syria, and God brought that word to fulfillment. Ezra is now back in Jerusalem. At the onset, he encounters the problem of intermarriage which moves him to tear his garment, pull his hair, and sit down in shock & disappointment at this lack of faith. At a deeper level, this shows a lack of faith in God, his promises, and his commandments. The bigger problem isn't getting married to other tribes; but getting married to people whose allegiance is to other gods, which will turn the hearts of God's people away. That's why Ezra is greatly disturbed moving him to confess this sin in prayer. INTERMARRIAGE REPORT: FAITHLESSNESS (9:1-2) EZRA'S RESPONSE: SORROW (9:3-4) EZRA'S PRAYER (9:5-15) Accepting guilt (9:5-7) Acknowledging favor (9:8-9) Accepting the dilemma (1:10-15)
No sooner has Ezra arrived in Jerusalem, he is informed that the community is intermarrying at a rapid rate; the leaders are the greatest culprits. Deuteronomy is Moses' final address to Israel before they enter the Promised Land. Chapter 7 continues his instructions, emphasizing God's covenant faithfulness and Israel's responsibility to remain holy and separate from the surrounding nations. This chapter feels like a father's final counsel to his children: “Don't forget who you are. Don't mix with the ways of the world. You are chosen.” Summary and Breakdown 1. The Lord Goes Before You (Verses 1–2) “When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations…” (v.1) Moses reminds the people: it is God who drives out the nations, not their strength. These nations were “greater and mightier,” but God has sovereignly chosen to displace them. The list of seven nations symbolizes completeness of conquest—God's full action to give His people space to flourish in the land of promise. Reflection: Victory belongs to the Lord. Often, what seems bigger than us is not bigger than God. He goes ahead of His people to prepare the way. 2. No Compromise, No Covenants (Verses 2–5) God commands: •Do not make treaties. •Do not intermarry. •Tear down their altars, smash sacred stones, cut down Asherah poles, and burn idols. This is not about ethnicity but spiritual purity. Intermarriage risked leading Israel into idolatry. God's desire is that they remain fully loyal to Him. Reflection: God calls His people to live distinct lives, not blending into the surrounding culture where it leads to compromise. Holiness is separation unto God, not isolation from people. 3. Chosen Because of Love (Verses 6–8) “The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you…” (v.7–8) Here is the heart of the covenant: God's love and faithfulness to His promise. Israel's election is an act of divine grace, not human merit. Reflection: We are chosen not because of our qualifications, but because of God's unchanging love. His grace is the foundation of our identity. 4. Blessings for Obedience (Verses 9–15) “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love…” (v.9) God's blessings include: •Multiplication of children and livestock •Prosperity in the land •Victory over enemies •Health and protection from diseases God ties obedience to covenant blessings—not as a transaction, but as a relationship. Obedience aligns Israel with the life God desires for them. Reflection: Obedience brings us into alignment with the fullness of life God desires. It is not about earning love but walking in the benefits of relationship. 5. Assurance of Victory (Verses 16–24) Moses reassures: do not fear the nations, no matter how powerful they seem. God will fight for them and deliver them into Israel's hands “little by little.” “Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.” (v.21) The “little by little” progression teaches patience and preparation. Sudden victory might leave the land unmanageable. Reflection: Victory in life is often progressive. God prepares us step by step, not all at once. Trust His timing. 6. Remove Every Snare (Verses 25–26) Moses warns against bringing anything detestable into their homes. Destruction is complete because idols are not neutral—they ensnare hearts. “Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.” (v.26) Reflection: We must be vigilant about what we allow into our lives and homes. What seems small can be a doorway to compromise. Key Themes of Deuteronomy 7 •God's Sovereignty: He goes before His people, fights their battles, and secures their inheritance. •Covenant Love: God's choosing of Israel is an act of steadfast love, not human achievement. •Holiness and Separation: God calls His people to live distinctly, reflecting His holiness. •Victory Through Obedience: Walking in God's ways leads to flourishing and protection. •Diligence Against Compromise: Removing every idol and snare preserves covenant faithfulness. ⸻ Life Application Deuteronomy 7 is not just for ancient Israel; it speaks today - Remember that we are set apart for God's purposes. Do not fear challenges, for God fights for His people. Be vigilant against compromise in the small things. Trust God's timing in your journey. For years, the Reform movement in America has allowed marriage between a Jewish and non-Jewish spouse, as long as the couple commits to raising their children as Jews. But a cultural taboo against intermarriage remained for Reform clergy, a taboo reinforced by admissions and ordination standards at the Hebrew Union College, the movement's main seminary. Applicants who were in a long-term relationship with a non-Jewish partner were denied, on the grounds that modeling a Jewish home was expected of rabbis. That changed this year. “Moving forward,” a recent letter from the president, provost, and board chair of the seminary announced, “the religious identity of a student's or applicant's partner will no longer disqualify students for admission or ordination.” The letter goes on to explain that this decision is the result of a process of internal deliberation, and that it brings what's expected of the clergy in line with the reality of the broader Reform community. In reaction, the longtime Reform rabbi Mark Cohn took to the Times of Israel with an article, called “The Anguished Dilemma of a Reform Rabbi,” lamenting the decision. In today's conversation, Cohn joins Jonathan Silver to discuss the Reform movement's attitude toward interfaith couples, the relation between clergy and congregation, the purpose and nature of religious leadership, and in this case, who is leading whom, why this decision was made, and what it could mean for the future of Reform clergy in America. He was a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses that the LORD, the God of Israel, had given, and the king granted him all that he asked, for the hand of the LORD his God was on him. 7 And there went up also to Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king, some of the people of Israel, and some of the priests and Levites, the singers and gatekeepers, and the temple servants. 8 And Ezra1 came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. 9 For on the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylonia, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, for the good hand of his God was on him. 10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel. 11 This is a copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, a man learned in matters of the commandments of the LORD and his statutes for Israel: 12 “Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven. And those who do not know them, you shall teach. 26 Whoever will not obey the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgment be strictly executed on him, whether for death or for banishment or for confiscation of his goods or for imprisonment.” 27 Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the heart of the king, to beautify the house of the LORD that is in Jerusalem, 28 and who extended to me his steadfast love before the king and his counselors, and before all the king's mighty officers. Ezra Sends for Levites 15 I gathered them to the river that runs to Ahava, and there we camped three days. As I reviewed the people and the priests, I found there none of the sons of Levi. 16 Then I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, leading men, and for Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of insight, 17 and sent them to Iddo, the leading man at the place Casiphia, telling them what to say to Iddo and his brothers and8 the temple servants at the place Casiphia, namely, to send us ministers for the house of our God. 18 And by the good hand of our God on us, they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli the son of Levi, son of Israel, namely Sherebiah with his sons and kinsmen, 18; 19 also Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, with his kinsmen and their sons, 20; 20 besides 220 of the temple servants, whom David and his officials had set apart to attend the Levites. These were all mentioned by name. Fasting and Prayer for Protection 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods. 22 For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way, since we had told the king, “The hand of our God is for good on all who seek him, and the power of his wrath is against all who forsake him.” 23 So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty. Priests to Guard Offerings 24 Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests: Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their kinsmen with them. 25 And I weighed out to them the silver and the gold and the vessels, the offering for the house of our God that the king and his counselors and his lords and all Israel there present had offered. 26 I weighed out into their hand 650 talents9 of silver, and silver vessels worth 200 talents,10 and 100 talents of gold, 27 20 bowls of gold worth 1,000 darics,11 and two vessels of fine bright bronze as precious as gold. 28 And I said to them, “You are holy to the LORD, and the vessels are holy, and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering to the LORD, the God of your fathers. 29 Guard them and keep them until you weigh them before the chief priests and the Levites and the heads of fathers' houses in Israel at Jerusalem, within the chambers of the house of the LORD.” 30 So the priests and the Levites took over the weight of the silver and the gold and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem, to the house of our God. 31 Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and from ambushes by the way. 32 We came to Jerusalem, and there we remained three days. 33 On the fourth day, within the house of our God, the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed into the hands of Meremoth the priest, son of Uriah, and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas, and with them were the Levites, Jozabad the son of Jeshua and Noadiah the son of Binnui. 34 The whole was counted and weighed, and the weight of everything was recorded. 35 At that time those who had come from captivity, the returned exiles, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel, twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and as a sin offering twelve male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD. 36 They also delivered the king's commissions to the king's satraps12 and to the governors of the province Beyond the River, and they aided the people and the house of God. Ezra Prays About Intermarriage 9 After these things had been done, the officials approached me and said, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands with their abominations, from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race13 has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands. And in this faithlessness the hand of the officials and chief men has been foremost.” 3 As soon as I heard this, I tore my garment and my cloak and pulled hair from my head and beard and sat appalled. 4 Then all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the faithlessness of the returned exiles, gathered around me while I sat appalled until the evening sacrifice. 5 And at the evening sacrifice I rose from my fasting, with my garment and my cloak torn, and fell upon my knees and spread out my hands to the LORD my God, 6 saying: “O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens. 7 From the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt. And for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering, and to utter shame, as it is today. 8 But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant and to give us a secure hold14 within his holy place, that our God may brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our slavery. 9 For we are slaves. Yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, but has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, to grant us some reviving to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us protection15 in Judea and Jerusalem. 10 “And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments, 11 which you commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land that you are entering, to take possession of it, is a land impure with the impurity of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations that have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness. 12 Therefore do not give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.' 13 And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a remnant as this, 14 shall we break your commandments again and intermarry with the peoples who practice these abominations? Would you not be angry with us until you consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape? 15 O LORD, the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this.” The People Confess Their Sin 10 While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel, for the people wept bitterly. 2 And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this. 3 Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord16 and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God, and let it be done according to the Law. 4 Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it.” 5 Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take an oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath. 6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night,17 neither eating bread nor drinking water, for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles. 7 And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem, 8 and that if anyone did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles. 9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain. 10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have broken faith and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel. 11 Now then make confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives.” 12 Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, “It is so; we must do as you have said. 13 But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a task for one day or for two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter. 14 Let our officials stand for the whole assembly. Let all in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every city, until the fierce wrath of our God over this matter is turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them. 16 Then the returned exiles did so. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter; 17 and by the first day of the first month they had come to the end of all the men who had married foreign women. The apostle John calls the final vision of evil he sees, "Mystery, Babylon the Great: Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth." (Revelation 17:5) This title speaks to the true wickedness of who this Mystery Babylon represents and her incomparable influence over mankind. She is the source of all the abominations of the Earth, as well as the "Mother" of harlots. We know that throughout the bible women are used figuratively to speak of the body of believers - a virgin always represented the pure and faithful group of believers, while a prostitute signified an apostate group of believers. Morning: Ezra 9–10 Ezra 9–10 (Listen) Ezra Prays About Intermarriage 9 After these things had been done, the officials approached me and said, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands with their abominations, from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race1 has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands. Behold, we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this.” The People Confess Their Sin 10 While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel, for the people wept bitterly. 2 And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this. 3 Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord4 and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God, and let it be done according to the Law. 4 Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it.” 5 Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take an oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath. 6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night,5 neither eating bread nor drinking water, for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles. 7 And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem, 8 and that if anyone did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles. 9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days.
