What are the 10 albums that define your life? Music has such an immediate impact and leaves such a lasting impression on its listeners..Albums and songs can be such a timestamp in ones life..These are those stories. #10albums
October 16th marks the release of Tom Petty's 'Wildflowers & All the Rest' box set! 26 years since the release of the original LP the TEP crew releases the 10 songs that "didn't make the cut" , as well as all the 4 track demos that Tom recorded in preproduction ..and live versions of the songs that follow a 1995-2017 timeline!! Very much looking forward to this release!!
Ever experience that time where you're listening to a heavy or fast-tempo'd song and and you glance down at your speedometer - and you notice you are WELL over the speed limit?? Glen, Darci and Matt discuss their tales of being pulled over, accidents and ..near-misses in this mini-series of 'Songs to Speed To' !

This is a dense, layered, lengthy album full of challenging and complex songs. I have been listening to this album, in sequence, for the entire past 12 months and am more high on it now than ever before. It grows on you! Check out Dan Dubuque on youtube (he's the artist that performs 'Descending' in the intro/outro of this episode.
Pretty self-explanatory title.. On the same page as me??...not convinced? Have a listen - let me know what you think!
43 years ago today - The King, Elvis Presley was found dead in his Graceland mansion. He was only 42.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER ...we finally give some time to the 11th studio album from Pearl Jam. Released March 22nd, a week or so after the world had changed; a global pandemic shut down everything as we know it. This is a great summer album - Pearl Jam always deliver these excellent 'road trip' albums. I love how polarizing the first single of the album was, too..'Dance of the Clairvoyants' ..
25 years ago today Matthew Good Band released 'Last of the Ghetto Astronauts' , on a budget of roughly $5000 CAD - which went on to be the most successful independent release in Canadian history. Today we celebrate the 25 years of our favourite artist with a conjoined 'Top 10 Albums' list , between co-hosts Glen and Matt!!
Todd has returned and chosen his #9pick!! As Todd so eloquently pointed out his picks have all seemed to follow the same route of Glen not knowing the band or artist and I attempt to compartmentalize the pick and shove it into a category known as "Sonic : Modern Rock Radio" . MGMT has had a strange career that has followed a 'reverse climax' style trajectory...this album was HUGE and its crazy to think it was their debut!! ***** Todd bio : Award-winning Todd Anstett has brought the world 'VRS - Be Kind, Rewatch'. He is also a meteorologist located in East Coast Canada. A slightly younger perspective on the show leanings to more of a modern rock presentation.
As we approach the 3 year date of the tragic death of Chester Bennington - Grey Daze provides a look back into the beginnings of this incredibly talented musician... "Amends is an upcoming remix album by Grey Daze composed of Chester Bennington's vocals from the 90's over newly recorded instrumentals. "What's In The Eye" was released as the first “fan track” from the project on January 17, 2020 and was co-produced by Chris Traynor, Kyle Hoffman and Jay Baumgardner. The first single, "Sickness" featuring Page Hamilton and produced by Pete Nappi, was released on February 6th.[1] The release of the album was postponed from April 10th to June 26th due to the Covid-19 outbreak.[2][3] According to Sean, their distribution system was affected by the crisis and they thought it was unfair with fans who purchased physical copies to simply release the album digitally on the original date.[4] The band has no intention to tour without Chester or replace him with another vocalist and turned down every offer to play shows they got.[5]They are, however, open to the idea to do a tribute show with other singers if the right opportunity presents itself and it is done in a way that honors Chester." -linkinpedia Unreal vocals from Chester Bennington on this sleeper album!! It blew my expectations away.
For a certain kind of music lover, there’s nothing more alluring than a “lost” album. Unlike a record that was merely “scrapped” or “never released,” the term suggests something both mysterious and not worth losing—especially when that album is fabled to be particularly emotionally raw, and especially when the artist who created it is beloved precisely for his rawness, but also for his reticence. “Sometimes life hurts,” Neil Young wrote in a blog post announcing that he was finally releasing Homegrown, an album that’s something of a unicorn among the sort of fans who read his Times-Contrarian newspaper. “This is the one that got away.” -Pitchfork.com Fantastic addition to Neil Young's catalogue !! A must for any fan.
Todd brings Radiohead into the mix here - his introduction to Radiohead album being 2000's 'Kid A'. We discuss the musical evolution of Radiohead, as well as the similar voices that Tom Yorke and Muse's Matthew Bellamy seem to have - among many other Radiohead-related talking points!
We are just shy of the 25th Anniversary of Matthew Good's 1st LP - "Last of the Ghetto Astronauts". So in a retrospective celebration Josh, Glen and Matt will be giving their Top 10 Matthew Good Albums in the coming weeks! The rules : EPs are excluded, no live albums...so 4 Matthew Good Band LPs (1995-2001) and 9 Matthew Good LPs (2003 - present). For those unfamiliar with Matthew Good - we apologize for the month+ of MG content , BUT definitely check this artist out if you haven't already ..you won't be disappointed. We will be getting back to the #10Albums format here over the summer!!
Glen and I list off our Top 10's for Matthew Good - spanning his amazing 25 year career ... There is only 2 songs that cross over on both of our lists, we also list off a few honourable mentions (oddly at the halfway point). Great content, lots of fun to talk about the career of such a talented dude!
Todd returns with another tremendous pick! Weezer released the dark LP in 1996 - 'Pinkerton' was a challenging/confusing rock-opera follow-up to the decidedly more whimsical 1994 Blue Album..which happened to be one of MY #10Album picks... We go into the album and what works about it, as well as the slow-burn, cult following this album seems to have gathered over time...and Todd and I can't resist taking a few more shots at what Weezer has become - not unlike Todd on the '2010s In Review' show from New Years Eve! ***** Todd bio : Award-winning Todd Anstett has brought the world 'VRS - Be Kind, Rewatch'. He is also a meteorologist located in East Coast Canada. A slightly younger perspective on the show leanings to more of a modern rock presentation.
Glen and I discuss the 25 year career of one of (if not) our favourite artists : Matthew Good. We'll be doing a 'Top 10 Songs' of Matthew Good in the coming weeks, as well as the 'Top 10 Albums' of Matthew Good. If you've never heard of this guy - you MUST check him out!!
Todd returns to continue his 15 month journey through his #10Albums! This time he brings Kings of Leon to the plate - with their 2008 bombshell "Only By the Night" which included the monster hits 'Sex On Fire' and 'Use Somebody'. Todd illustrates how this one was kind of a "one and done" album for his relationship with KoL, as well as how this album was a big part of travelling to a fro during high school. We also attempt to recollect how this band is related, and discuss how some bands in this era were more or less forced into an arena-rock format despite (probably) being much more effective in the smaller clubs. ***** Todd's bio : Award-winning Todd Anstett has brought the world 'VRS - Be Kind, Rewatch'. He is also a meteorologist located in East Coast Canada. A slightly younger perspective on the show leanings to more of a modern rock presentation.

As a precursor for the Quarantine Mixtape mini-series Glen and I discuss the art of making a mixtape and the choices between song placement, etc. We also bring up and delve into Columbia House Music Club (it was around in the 90s) where one could order 10 cassettes for 1 penny and then have to purchase 5 more at an inflated 'regular' price...it was a great way to expand your collection. We also bring up the chipmunks sounding 'high speed dubbing', trying to tape songs off the radio, top loading cassette recording devices and how the mixtape resurfaced in pop culture with Guardians of the Galaxy. Great episode! Lots of fun.
Darci, Glen and I have a tremendous plan as far as how to kill some time during this government issued isolation : Quarantine Mix Tape!!! 60 minutes (no going over, otherwise the song cuts off!), 30min a side...what would your mix tape be if you could only pick 60min of material to listen to for the rest of the quarantine?? Coming soon!!
"Selling out" is a common expression for the compromising of a person's integrity, morality, authenticity, or principles in exchange for personal gain, such as money. ... The term could also be used as 'sold out' depending on the context. Glen and I discuss and break down some the most infamous turnings-of-the-tide of bands that ended up alienating their initial or "target audience", seemingly in a calculated business move in order to pursue the Almighty Dollar!! source we used for some ideas : https://watchmojo.com/video/id/15882

It has been well-documented Matthew Good is one of, if not THE, favourite artist of both Glen and myself ..and here we have a chance to give our first impressions of his new album 'Moving Walls' ! We are attending his solo acoustic show - coming to the Jubilee Auditorium here in Edmonton, Canada..April 1st. We'll "Part 2" this episode with a show review!
Glen is BACK!! .and he's brought his 2nd #honourablemention : Corrosion of Conformity's 1994 LP - 'Deliverance'!! We talk CoC's hardcore roots and beginnings and how they morphed into a sludgy stoner-rock band through the 90's...how bassist/vocalist Pepper Keenan was rumoured to have joined Metallica around the St.Anger timeframe (yes, another St.Anger reference on the show haha). Good pick, good episode!!
This album was in exclusive/heavy rotation for me this past January and February...I had a huge life choice to make and this LP was my choice to lean on and help me keep grounded. Close to a flawless album, it has a great variance in soft/loud and long/short songs. I have always loved Neil when he plays with Crazy Horse!! 1975's Zuma follows 1974's 'On the Beach' and 1975's 'Tonight's the Night'. Great stuff!!
Well here we are : Josh is officially our 4th person to complete the #10Albums list!! He is clearly torn with WHICH Nick Cave album to pick...we bring up Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds "alias" Grinderman (which is an amazing album in its own right). But..in classic #10Albums form Josh sticks to the album that means most to him - there is the complete package for his choice : attending a live concert that supported the album; the album also helped Josh through the grief of his dog (Sinopa) passing away after 14 years of friendship. Thanks for contributing Josh! ***** Josh bio An RN from North Vancouver, grew up on 90s grunge, leanings towards favouring Singer/Songwriter material, have been playing & performing music for over 20 years, visual artist, graphic novel/comic artist.
This is a mini-episode that took place between recording 9 and 10 picks for Josh... We discuss some #honourablementions, and I happened to bring up my #hm2 : Guns N Roses - 'GnR Lies'. I remember getting this cassette from Columbia House (buy 10 cassettes for 1 penny etc) ..I was 10 years old ..and I was listening to it on my walkman during our family vacation and it really spoke to my rebellious side. I instantly felt more defiant and angry. I loved the swearing and attitude! (The racial and homophobic stuff really didn’t age well, however ...yeesh)
Josh is back and he's here to drop his #9pick! We give an overview of BC's own Matthew Good - from his humble beginnings in Burnaby, BC to becoming an international success (with Matthew Good Band) before entering an arguably more successful 2nd phase of his career with a string of amazing solo records. Josh picked 2007s 'Hospital Music'. I love when there is the synchronicity that occurs when an album releases and seems to speak to you and what is going on in your life at the time. This is definitely the case with Josh and 'Hospital Music'. ***** Josh bio An RN from North Vancouver, grew up on 90s grunge, leanings towards favouring Singer/Songwriter material, have been playing & performing music for over 20 years, visual artist, graphic novel/comic artist.
Josh brings his 10 best of the decade that was the 2010s, as well as some honourable mentions. A well-rounded list with some great picks you may have never heard of!
Josh has returned to discuss his favourites from the 2010s decade - but before we get there we take time to discuss how Spotify and Apple Music (among other streaming services) have permanently changed the music experience for all of us. Interesting episode!
As this phase of Sound Extractor winds down, Stew Kirkwood takes a time-out to reflect on the past 20 years... This episode we discussed : - What collaboration means to Stew - dealing with band dramatics - What is on the horizon in 2020 - What advice Stew has for indie bands and indie producers - What is the legacy of Sound Extractor at this point - What is the impact Stew wants to leave moving forward BIO : Stew Kirkwood is a musician's producer. He began recording his own songs at the age of 7 with a primitive multi-tracking technique he developed out of necessity to accommodate his sonic visions. Today, he owns and operates one of the most successful studios in Western Canada, Sound Extractor Studios, and is in high demand as a producer and audio engineer. He has produced albums for over 200 artists, many of which have had mentionable success on radio charts, in film placements and in written and online press. As a producer and a multi-instrumentalist, he has the vocabulary to speak to the artist and musicians in the language of their respective instruments. Stew Kirkwood is at the tippy-top of the list as far as Producers in Western Canada, dare I say the entire country! As this phase of Sound Extractor winds down, Stew Kirkwood takes a time-out to reflect on the past 20 years... This episode we discussed : - Grant proposals - Stew's 2007 LP "Free to Fly on a String That's Tied" - Family life mixed with owning a business - engineering Keith Urban, Justin Beiber and Shinedown and what in meant to Sound Extractor - the 2010s Sonic Band of the Month showcases (many of which were produced by Stew) - partners in business and the importance of being able to share and delegate - how many projects at once? Stew Kirkwood is the at the tippy-top of the list for Producers in Western Canada..I dare say in Canada entirely. As this phase of Sound Extractor winds down, Stew Kirkwood takes a time-out to reflect on the past 20 years... This episode we discussed : - The start of Stew's engineering days (grade 2!) - his band 'Welcome' , who's rehearsal space gave birth to Sound Extractor - how he expanded his business in the early 2000s - when he "quit his day job" - music industry changes and how they affected business - his cover band 'Rotting Fruit' - why indie bands still need CDs BIO : Stew Kirkwood is a musician's producer. At the time of posting this episode we are just HOURS away from 2020 !!...a new decade... So instead of just a Year in Review - we went big and did the whole decade. Join Matt, Darci, Glen and Todd as we attempt to compile a 10best for the 2010s!! HAPPY New Years TO ALL!!
Todd is back for #5pick - where he discusses his process for narrowing down to Bright Eyes being his "sad white guy with an acoustic guitar" pick...as there is only room for one! This 2005 release was ranked at number 50 on Rolling Stone list of "Top 100 Albums of the Decade"and at number 31 on NME's "Top 100 Greatest Albums of the Decade". **** Todd bio Award-winning Todd Anstett has brought the world 'VRS - Be Kind, Rewatch'. He is also a meteorologist located in East Coast Canada. A slightly younger perspective on the show leanings to more of a modern rock presentation.
Foster the People make Todd's #10Albums list with their debut 2011 release 'Torches'. This album had the Uber-catchy 'Helena Beat' and the controversial 'Pumped Up Kicks'. We discuss the subject matter of the latter, as well as why FtP songs are so catchy!! ..did you know the singer, Mark Foster, used to write radio and commercial jingles?? Torches received generally favorable reviews from critics and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. The record peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 in the US and number one on the ARIA Albums Chart in Australia. It has been certified platinum in Australia and the US, Philippines, and Canada. **** Todd bio Award-winning Todd Anstett has brought the world 'VRS - Be Kind, Rewatch'. Todd is back, in studio this time, with his #3pick!! Todd tells the story of seeing Cage the Elephant in concert and getting kicked in the head by lead singer Matthew Shultz! We also discuss how this wild lead singer might be looked back on by the next generation of listeners... Melophobia is the third studio album by American rock band Cage the Elephant. Recorded at St. Charles in Nashville, Tennessee and produced by Jay Joyce, the album was released on October 8, 2013, through RCA Records. It is also the final album that features lead guitarist Lincoln Parish. For Melophobia, Cage the Elephant attempted to distance themselves from comparisons of the sound that influenced them, shutting themselves off from as much recorded music as possible. Melophobia means "fear of music"; the band did not view the term literally, but rather thought of the term as "a fear of creating music to project premeditated images of self, like catering to cool, or making music to project an image of being intellectual or artistic or poetic, rather than just trying to be an honest communicator." *** Todd's bio : Award-winning Todd Anstett has brought the world 'VRS - Be Kind, Rewatch'. He is also a meteorologist located in East Coast Canada. A slightly younger perspective on the show leanings to more of a modern rock presentation.
#hm = honourable mention Erik was pretty enamoured with The Who during his late teens/early 20s. We discuss how much the band changed from their early years before taking on a much more mature, conceptual band. BIO : Erik is an Audio Engineer / Live Sound Tech based out of Vancouver, BC. He has made a career in music since 2002. Due to the constant, daily exposure to music Erik has a vast knowledge, varied taste and enormous vinyl collection.
It's shocking to think that CCR was only around for 5 years - yet they put out SOOOO many classic songs. I always think about Forest Gump and The Big Lebowski when I think CCR. Erik picks another stellar pick with this one... Think of the hits on this one : Someday Never Comes, Lodi, Down on the Corner, Have You Ever Seen Rain?, Who'll Stop the Rain, Fortunate Son, Heard it Through the Grapevine and on and on... BIO : Erik is an Audio Engineer / Live Sound Tech based out of Vancouver, BC. He has made a career in music since 2002. The Almighty Neil Young resurfaces to the series - this time its 1989's Freedom. It's always tough to pick one album from such a prolific artist - but Erik gives his reasons why in this episode. **of note - Erik seems to change his pick mid-episode to a live Neil Young album... BIO : Erik is an Audio Engineer / Live Sound Tech based out of Vancouver, BC. He has made a career in music since 2002. #hm = honourable mention 'The Missing Album' is a must-listen for any blues fans. Erik solves the mystery of the fact this album seemed to have gone missing, yet again - I honestly couldn't find it online, nor could I find my CD of the same name. (it is actually titled "More Real Folk Blues : The Missing Album). BIO : Erik is an Audio Engineer / Live Sound Tech based out of Vancouver, BC. He has made a career in music since 2002. Due to the constant, daily exposure to music Erik has a vast knowledge, varied taste and enormous vinyl collection.
Pearl Jam resurfaces - this time on Erik's list. He initially chooses 'Yield' but after we talk about it Vitalogy reveals itself to have had more impact on his life, overall, then 'Yield'. This album set off Erik's desire to collect vinyl, started him off on playing drums and was a part of the infamous "Columbia House 10 CD's for a Penny" deal. SEASON 2 HAS BEGUN !! Black Sabbath paved the way for all the stoner-rock and grunge rock that we've enjoyed over the years - from Kyuss to Soundgarden and beyond. This ground-breaking album came out in 1970 ..it was the 2nd album released by the band...AND the 2nd album released THAT YEAR! I would like to introduce Erik Armstrong to the podcast series. He has been living in Vancouver since he turned 19 and has managed to maintain a career in music ever since (he is an Audio Engineer and a Live Sound Tech). In late 2005 Erik was employed at The Warehouse - Bryan Adams' recording studio - as an Assistant Engineer...much to his delight Canada's most famous band, The Tragically Hip, entered the studio to record their 10th studio album "World Container". Erik shares his stories about his 6 weeks working closely with The Hip and producer Bob Rock...stories such as getting a drum lesson from Johnny Fay on the very drum kit Fay used on "Fully Completely"...Downie bouncing last-minute lyric changes off him...the band setting up and settling in to the studio and starting into 'Wheat Kings' as Erik walked around the room running cables...Erik even got offered a job to go back to the Hip's home studio 'The Bath House'. There are some hilarious stories about how Canadian and down(ie) to earth the band is, as Erik remembers this experience! October 17th, 2006 was the release date for this album....who would think that 11 years later the same calendar day would share Gordon Downie's last day on Earth. Great podcast - enjoy!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Container Erik will be joining us with his personal #10Albums list! ***ALSO OF NOTE : THIS IS OUR 1ST BDAY OF THE PODCAST TODAY!! THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE LISTENED AND CONTRIBUTED!! ...HERE'S TO MANY MORE YEARS.
Well I started with the first cassette I ever purchased with my, at the time, $5/week allowance...1988's Bon Jovi 'New Jersey' ! I was about 7 or 8 when this album came out - I had the kid mullet and liked me some hair rock. Some pretty funny stories in this episode. Glen and I also discuss our war stories for injured fingers for some reason. *** About Matt : "I am in between Glen and Darci's ages and definitely grew up with 90s grunge, as well as being heavily influenced by my dads 70s rock. I am the musician of the group, as well."
2 years ago today - Gordon Downie left us in the physical sense of things...but his legacy continues, and will always continue, to live on. This was a fun list to do!! Josh and I compare notes, I chime in with my Top 10 - starting with my #1 pick.
HAPPY CANADIAN THANKSGIVING WEEKEND!! ....also : TODAY IS NATIONAL ALBUM DAY so we felt the distinct need to record and post an episode. Glen reveals the first "runner up" album that didn't QUITE make the cut for his #10albums.... Deftones 1997 release : Around The Fur! **** Glen is the clan elder and has metal tastes with surprisingly tender pop sensibilities ...
We START on #1 and work our way backwards in this reverse-engineered Top 10 List. Anyone not familiar with The Tragically Hip - do yourself a favour and check them out!!
