Support the Official Release You can listen to Band of Horses' Infinite Arms on: Apple Music Spotify Or purchase Infinite Arms on: Amazon Music Links Marvis Pro, the iOS music player Michael mentioned using to see his play counts. Vacationer's Relief, the only album that came close to Infinite Arms's play count number in Michael's library. You can read Michael's previous review on the record here. Michael mentioned having a Fracture print of Infinite Arms, which is a picture printed directly on glass for a minimal, sleek presentation. This is his current collection. Sun Kil Moon's Benji, the album Marc claimed to be a perfect foil to the easily digestible and repeatable Infinite Arms. You can listen to our previous discussion on the record in Episode 8. Band of Horses' new lineup during Infinite Arms, and would remain unchanged for years—the first “true” Band of Horses lineup: Benjamin Bridwell Creighton Barret Ryan Monroe Bill Reynolds Tyler Ramsey The star at the center of the pivot point in the album art is Polaris (more commonly known as the “North Star”). The star seems to stand still in long exposure photography while the rest of the northern hemisphere stars spin around it due to the North Star being in a (mostly) direct line with the Earth's rotational axis with respect to the North Pole. Christopher Wilson, the Photographer for Infinite Arms's cover art and all the band's album art up to that point. (information courtesy of the Albums app on iOS). Michael's insane graph of “vibrancy”/”energy” by track number Infinite Arms was nominated for “Best Alternative Music Album” for the 53rd Grammy Awards in 2011, the same year Arcade Fire famously secured Album of the Year with The Suburbs. You can read Marc's thoughts on The Suburbs here. Marc found “Factory” to share similarities with Paul McCartney and Wings's “Let Me Roll It” off 1973's Band on the Run and Vacationer's “Turning” off 2018's Mindset. You can read Marc's review of Band on the Run here or listen to our discussion on Mindset in Episode 14. “Factory” utilizes both a Memotron and Theremin. The Theremin also appeared in Lord Huron's “Love Like Ghosts” & “Way Out There” off 2015's Strange Trails, and you can listen to our previous discussion on that record in Episode 2. Michael's writeup on Jimmy Buffett's A1A mentioned during the show can be found here, the finest publication on the site thus far. The Last Bison's Quill, a record Michael felt was similar to “Compliments” since they both are high in character and charm in large part because of their imperfections. Grizzly Bear's Yellow House, the record Marc felt similarly leaned into “everything & the kitchen sink” production. Eagles, a classic rock band Michael could very easily see playing “Laredo” ChrisCorradi's comment on the “bullet in my Kai Lorenzo” lyric on genius.com “Band Of Horses Survived… Barely”, The SPIN interview Marc mentioned where Ben touches on his then-recent separation with his spouse. “Grumpy Old Men” (the 1993 film) and “Old City Bar” by Trans-Siberian Orchestra both evoked similar feelings and visuals in Michael as “Blue Beard”. The Explorer's Club, a classic rock & roll and classic pop-influenced band that Marc found strikingly similar to Band of Horses' experiments in “Blue Beard” and “Dilly”. “I need more cowbell!” Long in the Tooth and Repo Records referenced in the show are Marc's favorite record haunts in the Philly area. Support your local music stores! Marc kept saying “Dilly” was very “70's” but meant to say “60's” (oops). Ludo's “Good Will Hunting by Myself”, the song Michael mentioned takes the stereotypical “I'm better off without you, anyway” attitude from pop breakup songs and cranks it up to a comical extreme. Admiral Fallow, the band Michael mentioned was also sometimes similarly “rough” in vocal delivery like in “Evening Kitchen” and also works because of those edges. Arcade Fire's “We Used To Wait”—which explicitly and intentionally makes the audience “wait” for a final chorus that never again returns—Michael cheekily claimed to be the antithesis to the infinitely repeating chorus in “Older”. “Basement Shows” (also known as “House Shows”), a staple of Philadelphia college life. “Are You My Neightbor?”, a deep cut Marc made to the classic VeggieTales episode. Yes, this was a real thing. Grizzly Bear's “Colorado”, a song Marc found just as boring as “Neighbor”. Yes Michael, I will put it down there. The Arcade Fire lyric Marc was flopping around trying to remember is “Took a drive into the sprawl / To find the house where we used to stay”, where their usage of “house” instead of “home” is meant to communicate emotional distance and lack of attachment to the physical place they grew up. References Listed in order of reference on the show. “We actually started with a tonne of songs—about twenty-five or so—so we didn't even know which ones would make it, or which ones were good or bad really. So you don't really know until you're recording them, because we weren't really playing a lot of them live, so once they're recorded you're like, ‘Okay, this actually sounds like a real song, and this one sounds like a joke'—we're just taking the piss out of some soul song or something, you know? So we kinda learned as we went, like, ‘Oh wow, is what the record sounds like'.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH “‘We have this time off before we gotta go back out on the road again—let's just go do it ourselves. We'll get another engineer… We think we know what the songs sound like—let's just go for it'. And so we were like, “This is actually really fun”. That's when we really discovered we don't have to beat each other up on this, we can just have fun with it and enjoy the process.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH “I did stretch myself pretty much to being broke, at the same time we didn't have to worry about anybody even coming in and hearing mixes or anything, we could really take our time with it.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH “It's the first time the line-up hasn't been this revolving door. With this record it's a real band that I'm part of. No one's going anywhere, everyone's contributing to the songwriting process and this is our coming-out party.” “Band of Horses: Infinite Arms Q&A with Ben Bridwell, Uncut Magazine (archive)” “… But that's the best part about it—the fact that it is a mystery. People get the lyrics wrong—I do that all the time with my favorite songs. You read the lyrics five years later, or hear it differently, and you're like, ‘Oh, I always kinda sang something to that effect when I was singing along, but I didn't really realize what they were talking about', you know? In a way it's like little hints come around and the mystery kinda reveals itself, but the fact that people don't really know is my favorite part, because that's what I appreciate about songs as well.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH [With Regards to “Factory”] “I was listening to a lot of Nick Drake and was really enamored by the string arrangements in his songs. Also, I was trying to make it a bit dramatic sounding in a Bittersweet Symphony kinda way.” “Track-byTrack: Band of Horses' Infinite Arms”, THE SKINNY “I was actually out writing songs for the new record, and I had some crazy stuff going on. That song just kind of ended up tapping me on the shoulder. Even though some of it is a bit maybe too autobiographical for my own tastes, a lot of it dances around subjects like all my songs do. I try not to be too specific.” “Infinite Arms: A conversation with Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell”, Mike Ragogna of HuffPost Entertainment “We got to the point where we were touring so much that nowhere was really home. So I figured, at least if I'm gonna come home after these long stretches of traveling, it would nice to be around my family; my parents, and my brother and sister are having babies. So it was like, when I come home, at least I'm close enough so I get to see them at least twice a year compared to like maybe once a year.” “Band Of Horses Interview”, CLASH “This song [‘Infinite Arms'] deals a lot with the major theme of the record, and being the title track that's maybe a little obvious, but this is one I'm not quite ready to unveil the mask on. But I can tell you that it almost didn't make the record.” “Track-byTrack: Band of Horses' Infinite Arms”, THE SKINNY “We went bonkers with Infinite Arms, because we could. It was a challenge to see what we could do, but we also overcooked some shit.” “Band of Horses: Mystery Riders”, Magnet Magazine Art ♫︎

Dem Vinyl Boyz are back again and this week they're dropping the needle on some 90s Vinyl from the legendary rock band Nirvana. 'In Utero' coming two years after their second studio album 'Nevermind' which went on to change music history selling over 30 million copies. Their third studio album was unfortunately Nirvana's last, after lead singer Kurt Cobain tragically passed away after an alleged suicide. In Utero is contrarian rock, it's meant to be everything Nevermind wasn't and perhaps nothing illustrates that more clearly than the rough, dissonant chord that spearheads Serve the Servants. It's not exactly a song I would call strenuous, but it's abrasive and confrontational. The Vinyl Boyz listen to old interviews with Kurt Cobain which were few and far between due to his reclusive nature. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album and has been certified five-times platinum. It's also a fixture on all sorts of best album lists even nearly 30 years later. Make sure to like, comment, follow, and subscribe. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
She may be petite and blonde, but don't let that fool you. Phoebe Bridgers is a GIANT. A songwriting giant. And her mid-2020 album "Punisher" was not only the perfect accompaniment to Covid quarantine, but it solidified the Californian as a bona fide commercial and critical star. Her ability to weave in angst, anger, humor and indifference into compelling, catchy, layered songs resulted in a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, while "Kyoto" was also nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Other highlights of the album (of which there are many) are "Garden Song" and "I Know The End." The latter version, which she performed on "SNL," garnered headlines when she screamed and smashed her guitar – not unlike how she has already smashed stereotypes.
Arlo Parks - "Softly," a 2022 single on Transgressive. This week's Song of the Day were selected by KEXP DJ Kevin Cole, host of Drive Time, in honor of International Women's Month. Re-listen to our kick-off day of programming, and explore articles and live sessions from some of our favorite female artists here. Last year, Arlo Parks - the musical nom de plume of Anais Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho - released her highly anticipated debut record Collapsed in Sunbeams. The intimate, compassionate lyricism combined with earworm pop musicality made the album an instant classic that was a KEXP favorite of 2021. Parks recently returned with the single “Softly,” which while bubbly and upbeat in tone, is, in reality, a heartbreaking story of a relationship on the verge of cessation. “‘Softly' is a song about yearning, about how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you're still desperately in love,” the Grammy-nominated singer - who's up for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album - explained in a statement. “The song is about how it feels to brace yourself before the blow of a break up and reminisce about the days where it all felt luminous.” The song was released alongside a video by Zhang and Knight that sees a cityscape disintegrate behind Parks. The directorial duo had this to say about the video: “For us ‘Softly' explored the idea of wanting something that was once perfect to end in a gentle way, and we wanted to express this using the world surrounding Arlo. We were instinctively drawn to the warm toned, hazy nostalgia of the 1960s, as we loved the idea of something universally romantic being slowly stripped away throughout the film. We based the colors of the bricks, trims and doors on mid-century painting in order to bake this romanticism into everything. The production itself was a huge challenge, as everything was captured in-camera with each piece of the set built on wheels operated by several production crew. However, we knew it was all worth it when we saw the skyscrapers dancing around Arlo for the first time.” Arlo Parks will be in Seattle on Wednesday, March 23rd to play the Paramount supporting Clairo. The 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 3rd. Watch the video for “Softly” at the link below. It's not every-day that a musician creates a hit single so popular that it racks up over a billion views – and it's even rarer when that artist then drops off of the face of the planet – but somehow, that's exactly what happened to the man behind “Somebody That I Used To Know”, the enigmatic singer/songwriter known as Gotye. That single was a pop-culture staple of the early 2010's and took home a whole slew of awards including three Grammys for Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Alternative Music Album. And yet – soon after returning home from a World Tour, Gotye decided to move on from his world-famous persona to concentrate on a side-project, his alt-rock band The Basics. He's also worked hard to ensure that a pioneer of the electronic music genre will never be forgotten by preserving the musical legacy of his friend and mentor, Jean-Jacques Perrey. So, no, Gotye isn't passed away -- though you can bet that rumor sure made the rounds – instead, after achieving the very heights of success, he's decided to pursue his true passions even if that means shrinking away from the mainstream spotlight.
Today we're talking about our favourite songs from one of our favourite bands, The White Stripes. Formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1997 by singer/ guitarist Jack White and drummer Meg White, the band emerged from a vibrant local scene and were soon taking their unique blues rock sound around the globe with a relentless touring schedule. Their first three albums won them a serious cult following– their third album White Blood Cells got a re-release in 2002, which coincided with the garage rock explosion that year, and they never looked back. They earned 3 Grammy's for Best Alternative Music Album over their career, with a catalogue that consists of six studio albums, a best of, two live albums, one EP, a concert film, a documentary, and 14 very cool music videos. The White Stripes stood out with their lo-fi recording and writing process, their blues rock influences, their fashion and design concepts with the red white and black theme across all albums, their genius music videos and their brilliant publicity ideas, such as the great mystery of if they were brother and sister as originally specified, or if they were actually ex-husband and wife. For the record, it was the latter, with Jack White originally being Jack Gillis the upholsterer before taking Meg's surname. Disbanding in 2011, they recently put out a Greatest Hits album via Jack White's label, Third Man Records, a name which goes all the way back to his first company, Third Man Upholstery. Let's talk about our favourite songs from The White Stripes.

Rokkland fjallar um Tómas M. Tómasson Stuðmann sem lést í vikunni í seinni hluta þáttarins en í þeim fyrri skoðum við aðeins Grammy verlaunin sem verða afhent í New York í kvöld og spjöllum við Sindra Ástmarsson hjá Mid Atlantic Entertainment. Rokkland var í vikunni sem leið á Eurosonic Festival í Groningen í Hollandi og þar var Sindra Ástmarsson framkvæmdastjóri umboðsskrifstofunnar Mid Atlantic Entertainmnent sem er t.d. með Glowie, Kaleo, Úlfur Úlfur og Emmsjé Gauta á sínum snærum. Sindri var á Eurosonic fjórða árið í röð að fylgja sínu fólki. Rokkland ræddi við hann í dönsku samkvæmi sem haldið var vegna þess að Danmörk og dönsk tónlist var í fókus á Eurosonic. En Eurosonic er svo stærsta tónlistarhátíð Evrópu sem gengur út á að kynna nýja tónlist fyrir nýjum eyrum. Svo verða Grammy verðlaunin afhent í nótt og það verður sýnt beint frá því á RÚV. Verðlaunin verða afhent í New York og við skoðum það aðeins í þættinum, skoðum t.d. hvaða lög eru tilnefnd í flokkunum Best Alternative Music Album og Best Americana Roots performance. En svo var það Tommi Tomm, Stuðmaðurinn og Þursaflokksmaðurinn Tómas M. Tómasson sem lést í vikunni eftir snarpa baráttu við krabbamein. Við höfum tekið ofan fyrir Tómasi í vikunni hérna á Rás 2 og Rokkland ærlar að minnast hans aðeins í dag og svo betur síðar.

John Wilson continues with the second series of Mastertapes, in which he talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios. Each edition includes two episodes, with John initially quizzing the artist about the album in question, and then, in the B-side, the audience puts the questions. Both editions feature exclusive live performances. Programme 3, A-side. "Rumor And Sigh" - Richard Thompson Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of all time, Richard looks back at the making of what is not just his most commercially successful album, but also one of the high points of his career. It was album that earned him a Grammy Nomination for the Best Alternative Music Album (he lost out R.E.M.) and it captures Thompson's obsession with romantic despair and the more miserable quirks of fate. And yet, like all good tragedy, it does not sound depressing - it is instead life affirming. Richard has said that the albums he considered "successful" were those where his initial concept most closely matched the finished product. By this yardstick, 'Rumor And Sigh' was one of his most successful albums, containing such tracks as "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", "God Loves A Drunk" and "Why Must I Plead". Producer: Paul Kobrak.
