This is a special episode.  The Story of Rock and Roll turned Six.  On 12 Dec 2017, the first-ever TSORR aired from the Mix 93.8 FM Studios in Midrand Johannesburg.  Six years later to the day, S6E51 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 12 Dec 2023.  The world has changed, and my life has changed so it is good to know that the music has not.  The episode was a celebration of the bands and the songs that make the show what it is.  Thank you all for your support, wherever you are and whoever you are I am deeply grateful for your support.  I will continue to make sure that the show delivers the music that you have come to know it for years to come.   We skipped the Diabolical Challenge this week due to the birthday bash.  There were just too many bands and songs to recognize.  I had 9 hours of music (123 songs) that somehow ended up in a 3 hour 34 song show.   We made up for it with the Immortals feature where we needed the time.  The number 2112 is sacred to the show so to celebrate the 6-year anniversary on the exact date the show started 12 December i.e. 21 12 we took a listen to the title track of Rush's masterpiece ‘2112' Artists featured:  Sixx A.M., John Paul Young, Van Halen, Cold Chisel, Deep Purple, James Reyne, Scorpions, KISS, Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Judas Priest, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Joe Jackson, The Boomtown rats, Audioslave, Matthew Good Band, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, ACDC, Foo Fighters, The Stranglers, The Clash, Rush, Guns ‘n' Roses, Megadeth, Mötley Crüe, Hinder, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Lyzyrd Kyngz, Mötorhead, The Uninvited.  The Story of Rock and Roll. Welcome to episode 21 of Season 6. The show went out on Rebel Rock Radio on 25 May 2023.  It was pre-recorded as I was away in a wonderful little town called Sedgefield somewhere along the Garden Route in the Western Cape.  I listened in and chatted to the people and it was a very cool show.  We kicked off with Orange Goblin, they made their TSORR debut with ‘Save Me From Myself'.  I will be playing much more Orange Goblin in the future, Ben Ward and the lads know how to rock.  From there it was all slash-and-burn up-tempo stuff like Jørn, L.A. Guns and Ace Frehley with ‘In Pursuit of Rock ‘n' Roll.   https://yourlastrites.com/2016/07/26/diamonds-and-rust-exploring-metal-classics-riot-fire-down-under/  I had a great chat with Justin VR and it was really interesting to talk to him.  We took a listen to his brand new single ‘She Said'.  Justin is described as country alt-rock so we stayed in a related area and checked out a guy who is new to me followed by a guy who is definitely not new to me.  I am talking Jelly Roll and Kid Rock respectively.  After that, we needed a bit of metal so Exodus and Gojira were called into the ring to break some heads.   Near the end of the show, we checked out some interesting cover songs, Longview, which is a Bily Joe Armstrong side project, and Chris Cornell with a very interesting mix-up of the lyrics from Metallica and U2 in his version of the U2 track ‘One'.  Chris committed suicide on 18 May 2017, this track was recorded in 2015.  RIP Chris, you are missed.   This week's Immortals track was provided by one of my favourite bands ever The Stranglers.  We checked out 7:58 of the final track of their debut album Rattus Norvegicus.  JJ Burnell and Dave Greenfield are superb throughout.  For the Ultimate Challenge, we had a look at 2011 and the four albums chosen were Chickenfoot – III, Foo Fighters – Wasting Light, Sixx A.M. – This Is Gonna Hurt, and Five Finger Death Punch.  It was a toss-up between Foo Fighters and Chickenfoot.    Artists featured:  Orange Goblin, Jørn, Megadeth, L.A. Guns, Ace Frehley, Grand Funk Railroad, ACDC, Korn, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Van Halen, Tom Keifer, Triumph, Rush, Riot, Sinner, Texas Hippie Coalition, Circus of Power, Justin VR, Jelly Roll, Kid Rock, Exodus, Gojira, The Stranglers, Five Finger Death Punch, Chickenfoot, Sixx A.M. It is that time of year again, Dan Patlansky's guitar weekend down in Clarens.  This episode went out on Rebel rock Radio on 2 March 2023 at 19h00.  It was a bit messy, but messy is good, let me know if you disagree.  We kicked off with Fokofpolisiekar and their classic rock anthem, ‘Hemel Op Die Platteland, and followed up in quick succession with Airbourne, Grand Funk Railroad, and Mötley Crüe.  We heard from the ladies pretty early in the show, two stellar guitarists Sophie Lloyd and Laura Cox showing the way.  From there we checked out some Queen of Queen II and the opening tracks of My Chemical Romances masterpiece The Black Parade.   We broke radio rules and played Nickelback with no problem at all, I love Nickelback, I think Chad Kroeger is a phenomenal songwriter and has a golden voice.  I think the hate is coming from people piling on because others don't like them.  Be your own person and admit that there is nothing wrong with Nickelback

Episode 47 of season 5 aired at 19h00 on 254 Nov 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio.  I was worried the wifi wouldn't hold up with the load-shedding, but we made it.  The show kicked off with an old TSORR favourite called 'Tres Borrachos' by Left Lane Cruiser.  From there we took a listen to the perennial rock classic that is ‘Hair of the Dog.  Nevada Beach were up next with a track called ‘Hollywood.  Hank Decken is the main man in Nevada Beach, on guitar and vocals.  We will be taking a closer look at Hank in weeks to come because there are a lot of unsung heroes in the rock ‘n' roll business and I reckon Hank may be one of them.  We checked out two blues giants, Rory Gallagher and Philip Sayce, but listened to less bluesy tracks for a change.  Philip may have been a bit mellow for the early stages of the show so we ramped up a gear with Black Spiders and ‘KISS  Tried to Kill Me'.  Going back to Philip Sayce for a second, make sure you check out the solo at the end, it proves my theory that the songs are just vehicles for solos like this.   We changed pace with Black Spiders and a track called ‘KISS tried to kill Me' off their critically acclaimed (by me) album Sons of the North.  The new Soilwork is a really good album and we listened to ‘Death, I Hear You Calling'.  You may be aware I am a huge fan of Matthew Good Bands' early work so we took a listen to ‘Carmelina' off the Audio of Being album.  Brian Fallon's ‘My Name Is the Night' kept things tidy and then we floored it with In Flames and Parkway Drive.   From there we moved to an all-time South African classic by No Friends of Harry, you guessed it the one and only ‘Competition Rules'.  Wilko Johnson passed away yesterday, as a RIP we played 'Going Back Home' the title track of the album he did with Roger Daltrey back in 2014.  Wilko was a founder member of Dr. Feelgood with vocalist Lee Brilleaux.  Dr. Feelgood were often cited as a big influence by the UK Punk era bands such as The Jam and The Clash, so we checked out both with ‘Art School' and ‘Drug-Stabbing Time'.  Then it was back to the stuff like The White Stripes and The Bottle Rockets.  The Bottle Rockets track 'Radar Gun' sent me off on a little tirade about the police in South Africa.  We went back to South Africa for a brand new track from the uber-talented Mark Haze and then we checked out some more Diverted Disorder.  The boys from the Vaal are doing good things, the album launch is this weekend.  From Diverted Disorder we heard The Cars, I shit you not, The Cars on TSORR!.  Why?  because it's a great song, and that is why.  I totally ran out of time, we squeezed in (or is it squoze :-))? Boston, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, and a brand new track from Disturbed.   We finished off with an eight min plus live epic from Black Label Society called 'Stillborn'.  Thanks for listening, comments welcome, catch TSORR on the website or Facebook page.   Artists featured:  Left Lane Cruiser, Nazareth, Nevada Beach, Rory Gallagher, Philip Sayce, Black Spiders, Soilwork, Tremonti, KISS, Matthew Good Band, Brian Fallon, In Flames, Parkway Drive, No Friends of Harry, ZZ Top, Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey, The Jam, The Clash, The Cult, The White Stripes, The Bottle Rockets, Texas Hippie Coalition, Joe Lynn Turner, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Motor Sister, Killit, Mark Haze, Diverted Disorder, The Cars, Bad Company, Boston, Def Leppard, Red Beans & Pepper Sauce, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Black Label Society.   The Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 40 went out live on 6 Oct 2022 at 19h00 on rebel Rock radio.  We kicked off with The Who and 'I'm Free' which was fitting seeing as I have just finished nearly three years of study and now have a lot more time to dedicate to The Story of Rock and Roll.  It was a pretty laid-back start by TSORR standards featuring stuff by John Cougar, Black Stone Cherry, and Jimmy Barnes.  The pace picked up with Motörhead and when we went to Germany to visit Rammstein and Scorpions with ‘Zwitter' and ‘Wild Child' respectively.   The next part of the show covered some classic '70 and '80s stuff from Golden Earring and Pat Benetar.  Instead of KISS we took a listen to a Gene Simmons track called ‘Living in Sin.  We changed pace with some Billy Talent (no he is not singing “I gave my life to Satan” :-), listen carefully) and Matthew Good Band out of Canada.  From there a good dose of Serbian Metal from Claymorean and then my current favourite thrash band out of San Franciso, Hell Fire, by now no strangers to this radio show.  Check out their new album Reckoning. The Punk came courtesy of The Clash, Die Toten Hosen, and Rancid, Carnival in Rio (Punk Was) went down very, very well.  Pairing George Lynch and Jeff Beck back to back was a great idea, listen out for those solos on the Lynch Mob and Ozzy tracks.   We hit the final straight with some great new SA stuff, another band out of the Devo Oosthuizen stable, this week a band called Forth Son South, and then we had Code 106 from their Alium EP.  From there some Springbok Nude Girls and classic Fokofpolisiekar.  A highlight of the show was a quick little tribute to the amazing Eddie Van Halen who passed away 2 years ago to the day.  You'll always be special to me Eddie RIP and thank you for everything. The ending was also very cool, we went acoustic with Rush, off Rush in Rio, and a track called 'Resist' and then Live with ‘Overcome', recorded live in Amsterdam at the Paradiso.  we then finished off with a bit of Neil Young and out with Megadeth off the new album The Sick, The Dying.......and The Dead.   Artists featured:  The Who, Fozzy, Black Sabbath, Jimmy Barnes, John Cougar, Black Stone Cherry, Motörhead, Rammstein, Great White, Scorpions, Pat Benetar, Seether, Stone Sour, Gene Simmons, Golden Earring, Billy Talent, Matthew Good Band, Pixies, Claymorean, Hell Fire, Led Zeppelin, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Eddie Van Halen, Van Halen, Die Toten Hosen, The Clash, Rancid, Kid Rock, Lynch Mob, Ozzy Osbourne, Kane Roberts, Fourth Son South, Code 106, Springbok Nude Girls, Fokofpolisiekar, My Chemical Romance, Linkin park, Rush, Live, Neil Young, Asphyx, Megadeth

S4E42 aired on Rebel Rock Radio on 21 Oct 2021.  I was in Clarens with my band the Bunk Girls Motorcycle Club on a guitar clinic with the most amazing Dan Patlansky so the episode felt a bit different from normal.  Having people around changes what you play and consequently, it's the first show that doesn't have something really heavy, no Slipknot, No Trivium, no Killswotch, sorry about that.  We kicked off in the usual way with some upbeat rock and roll from Buckcherry of the new album Hellbound,  Avenged Sevenfold's 'Girl I Know' off Diamonds in the Rough.  We stayed raucous for about  an hour and then got into the Neil Young, Springsteen phase before going really bluesy with the ladies, Larkin Po 9making a TSORR debut) and the wonderful Samantha Fish with a track called Down in the Swamp.   There was a nice stretch of SA music with Dan Patlansky and Albert Frost, two of the finest players around.  We paid special attention to Dan's tone and the fact that it is a product of a relentless lifelong search to get the right sound.   I then did something weird and played pretty much every band that the haters love to hate in a row.  I don't plan these things it just worked out like that.  All in all, I don't know what I think of this one, let's see what you think, comments as always are welcome, you can find The Story of Rock and Roll's Facebook page if you have anything to say about it.  Peace.    Artists featured:  Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, Godsmack, Halestorm, Warrior Soul, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Stone Cherry, Massive Wagons, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Larkin Po, Samantha Fish, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Megadeth, Hellfighter, ACDC, Kiss, Rush, Springbok Nude Girls, Bed On Bricks, Dan Patlansky, Albert Frost, Hinder, Nickelback, Def Leppard, Greta Van Fleet, Supertramp, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, John Mellencamp, Kid Rock, L7, Marilyn Manson, Matthew Good Band, The Wildhearts, The Damned, Foo Fighters, Mötley Crüe

Episode 8 of Season 4 aired at 7 pm on 25 Feb 2021.  I am very thankful to see the back of February, to be honest, it's been a really crap month.  I was on my last 24 hours of Covid quarantine and I find this shit really affects my mood.  This show was a good bit of medicine for anyone who is feeling a bit down.  We got straight into it with System of A Down and a wonderful cover of Sabbath'sSnowblind' and no it's not about the weather.  Next up we got into some ACDC and worked our way through some good up-tempo rock.  Ivan Ivankovic's demonstrated once again what a great guitarist he is,  The Dead Daisies took care of some new stuff, and then we went all the way back to '73 for a dose of The Rolling Stones off Goats Head Soup.  We took in some metal nice and early in the form of Parkway Drive and let The Clash and The Stranglers do the UK Punk honours.  Stevie Ray Vaughan made a rare appearance with 'Cold Shot'and it was fitting to follow Stevie with one of the only guys who can play Stevie like Stevie, South Africa's own Dan Patlansky.  I felt the need to stick the knife into Coca-Cola after this week's judgemental piece of wokeness and dedicated Fokofpolisiekars 'Vernietig Jouself' to them.  Other than that it was business as usual, with a nice little 3-play near the end featuring  Johnny Thunders, Asylum Kids & Matthew Good Band.  Artists featured:  System of a Down, Brides of Destruction, ACDC, Ivan Ivankovic, The Dead Daisies, The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Parkway Drive, The Clash, The Stranglers, Black Sabbath, Royal Blood, Megadeth, Dio, Accept, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dan Patlansky, The Gaslight Anthem, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Killswitch Engage, Those Damn Crows, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, Van Halen, Airbourne, Austin Gold, Gov't Mule, Pearl Jam, Fokofpolisiekar, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, The Pretty Reckless, Johnny Thunders, Asylum Kids, Matthew Good Band, Arch Enemy, Michael Schenker Group, Live.

Born and raised in Toronto, Wayley blends Indie, Folk, and Pop, to create a full band sound and anthem-style sing-alongs similar to the likes of Vance Joy, The Lumineers, and George Ezra.  At age 18, Wayley moved to a small beach town on the east Coast of Australia called, Coogee.  This is where he developed a love and passion for surfing, which he draws a huge amount of inspiration from.  His lyrics explore subjects anywhere from heartbreak to self encouragement that are held together by catchy choruses and sounds bites that you won’t forget.  After moving back to his hometown of Toronto, Wayley released his first single off his forthcoming EP in May of 2020, which received high praise from the press. After signing with Paris based Publishing Company ORA, he released his newest single “Waiting for You” in August of 2020. Tal Vaisman is a Toronto based producer, engineer, songwriter and professional guitar player.  He is an honorary graduate of the Metalworks Institute Audio Production/Engineering program and has worked with a multitude of both local and international musical acts over the years.  His musical work credits range from Canadian rock bands like Black Collar Union, Little Foot Long Foot, Sons Of Revelry, The Envy to Sway Clarke II under Island Records UK, Hammercult (under SPV Records Germany) and many more.  Tal has also worked with EDM and pop acts such as Shaun Frank, Automatic Toys and Twin City and X.Ari.  Some more recent credits include playing guitar for rising Country singer, Justin Tyler, and Canadian pop singer, Victoria Duffield, as well as production for Christee Palace, Julian Daniel and American teenage pop and American Idol contestant, Adem Dalipi. Tal also contributes both as a songwriter and as a musical producer to Family Channel and Netflix shows such as The Next Step, Lost And Found and Orphan Black. Tal has also composed music for various commercials for companies such as Mazda, Shoppers Drug Mart, Whirlpool, Nestle, Fiat and more.  In addition, Tal was the guitarist and one of two primary songwriters for the Ontario Rock band, Ascot Royals, with whom he toured Canada multiple times opening for bands like Big Wreck, Our Lady Peace and Matthew Good Band and many more.  They’re singles “New Skin”, “Best Is Yet To Come” and “Evil I Know” have received major airplay over rock radio stations as well as streaming platforms.  In 2017 they won the CASBY award for “Best New Act.”  These days Tal plays in a new Band called Kadeema with his long time musical partner Jimmy Chauveau. Josh is back and he's here to drop his #9pick! We give an overview of BC's own Matthew Good - from his humble beginnings in Burnaby, BC to becoming an international success (with Matthew Good Band) before entering an arguably more successful 2nd phase of his career with a string of amazing solo records. Josh picked 2007s 'Hospital Music'. I love when there is the synchronicity that occurs when an album releases and seems to speak to you and what is going on in your life at the time. This is definitely the case with Josh and 'Hospital Music'. ***** Josh bio An RN from North Vancouver, grew up on 90s grunge, leanings towards favouring Singer/Songwriter material, have been playing & performing music for over 20 years, visual artist, graphic novel/comic artist.

In the words of a listener, Episode 29 was “really cool, good energy”.  I have to agree wholeheartedly.  The show was recorded at midnight on 26 July 2019.  It was probably one of the first shows to wish Mick Jagger a very happy 76th birthday.  We played ‘Bitch' to celebrate, taken from the Live in Atlantic City album.  The show kicked off with Metallica and we didn't stop rocking for  the next two hours.  There was a wonderful part where we went from Slayer to Dylan and it was like someone had poured cool water over the entire world.  It felt like the whole planet was on fire and then Bob came and soothed our souls.  Another great part was listening to Put That Record On by Hinder where Austin Winkler sings “I know it's only rock and roll but it's the soundtrack of our lives”.  Those words sum up the whole ethos of the Story of Rock and Roll, this music is important, we love it and it is indeed the soundtrack to our lives.   Artists featured on Episode 29 included Metallica, Skid Row, Jack Hammer, Bush, Judas Priest, Halestorm, The Police, Mustasch, Rush, Sammy Hagar, Aerosmith, Jerry Cantrell, The Rolling Stones, Matthew Good Band, Slayer, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Kiss, Tesla, The Uninvited, Madness, Austin Gold, Cold Chisel Avenged Sevenfold, Windowpane and Hinder.  As usual I was out of time and I played out with an amazing new track by The Wildhearts called Let ‘Em Go , which cut off due to podcast length restrictions so I'll be playing that again soon.

We're keeping things short and sweet this week as the three-piece rock unit known as The Jins stopped by Sunday afternoon to chat in the studio. The band is in the midst of a pivotal year in their careers as they released their latest EP Death Wish on 604 Records with the assistance of producer Dave Genn of 54-40 and the Matthew Good Band and the band is looking to expand their audience beyond the loyal following they have fostered here in Vancouver.

Like we said before, from time to time we have the opportunity to get a band or a musician into a studio and have them walk us through their career. What comes out of these interviews can be  honest and pure conversations about the ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and challenges that come with being a musician trying to keep it all together in the madness and chaos of recording, touring and living. On this second episode we pick up the story with Matt from the last days of the Matthew Good Band through the start of his solo career.   This is Matt Good...in his own words. Part 2

We delve into our 2nd pick in the 10 album set that is the Soundtrack of Our (respective) Lives.. Glen and Matt actually picked the same album, if you can believe it! Glen/Matt : Matthew Good Band - Beautiful Midnight Darci : Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP ** Welcome to #10albums! My name is Matt and my co-hosts Darci and Glen join me as we unravel/reveal our 10 Life Defining Albums!! Glen is the clan elder and has metal tastes with surprisingly tender pop sensibilities ... Darci brings the female perspective and is in that 'millenial' age group that grew up in the ashes of Grunge, into the boy and girl bands, into EDM and Hip Hop. Also - she grew up with a rocker dad. I am in between Glen and Darci's ages and definitely grew up with 90s grunge, as well as being heavily influenced by my dads 70s rock. I am the musician of the group, as well. The basics of this series is : In no particular sequence Glen, Darci and Matt each reveal our 10 most influential albums, as what would make up the "soundtracks" to our lives...albums that are so intertwined with crucial times in our growing older; we share the stories as to the why, where, how. As we reveal our own lists , we will be introducing new people, with different tastes and the stories behind their choices - those stories are the backbone of the show. The stories behind the album picks are those goosebump inducing recollections that truly affirm all that's exciting about life.
