IDLES are a British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. The band consists of Joe Talbot (vocals), Mark Bowen (guitar), Lee Kiernan (guitar), Adam Devonshire (bass) and Jon Beavis (drums). A self-proclaimed 'angry band' from Bristol in Southwest England, IDLES take the fury of punk rock and wed it to a muscular but moody instrumental attack that matches the literate, purposeful menace of their lyrics. Lead singer and lyricist Joe Talbot's full-bodied ranting, in which he offers his vehement opinions on the state of British culture and his own personal issues, is matched by the rich, angular blast of the musicians, who can swing from melodic to brutally hard at a moment's notice. In this episode all songs selected by IDLES as guests for Australian TV show Rage, on Saturday June 8, 2019. Jordan sits down to a wild, funny, moving conversation with violinist, composer, Bad Seed, and author of Nina Simone's Gum Warren Ellis. It's an honest examination of where Warren's new book came from, how he learned how to write it, and why the potato is the miracle of the tuber world. Warren Ellis is an Australian multi-instrumentalist and composer, most famous for his work as collaborator and bandmate of Nick Cave, in both the Bad Seeds and Grinderman. Both solo and alongside Nick he is also a multi-award-winning film composer whose soundtracks include The Proposition, The Road, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Mustang and most recently This Train I Ride. His own band Dirty Three have released eight studio albums since 1994 and he is an in-demand producer and writer, working with artists including Marianne Faithful, Jupiter and Okwess and Tinariwen. Warren Ellis' music has been the soundtrack to my adult life. I remember when I first heard Dirty Three, they were like nothing else around; an instrumental band with a violinist who played like Hendrix, and epic songs that tore at the very fibre of your being. I listened to their albums and like many others put my own meaning into those wordless songs. In the mid 90's we started seeing him more in the Bad Seeds. He found a friend and collaborator in Nick Cave, they would form Grinderman together and compose beautiful soundtracks for film and television. Warren Ellis doesn't sit still. He also rarely looks back.. for him, creative life is about propelling forward, solving the mystery of song that awaits in his next project. When Dirty Three announced they'd be performing their debut album in full, I knew I wanted Waz to Take 5. He's always been the most entertaining part of Nick Cave doco's, and his fiery spirit on stage is magnetic; I wanted to get close to that, see what made him tick. What I witnessed, was an entirely different Warren Ellis. In a pin drop quiet room, he took us from his childhood in Ballarat, to the streets of Europe, finding his voice in Melbourne and then leaving it all behind to become the man he is today. Songs in the key of Waz. From the maestro himself. John Ellis - ‘Mis'ry is my Middle Name' Johnny Cash - ‘Orange Blossom Special' Beethoven -  ‘Symphony 7 slow movement number 2 Allegretto' Arleta - ‘Mia Fora Thymamai (I Remember a Time)' Alice Coltrane / John Coltrane – ‘The Sun'

On this week's Quietus Hour Special it's Luke Turner's great pleasure to take the hirsute and sharp Bad Seeds violinist, multi-instrumentalist and arranger down into a dark and concrete Soho basement for a chat about Nick Cave & his band's life and work. This week The Bad Seeds release Lovely Creatures, a new career-spanning anthology of classics and lesser-known tracks, and we take Warren through a choice selection of songs. Starting with the time that Ellis managed to miss seeing the Birthday Party's final tour because he fell asleep pissed outside the gig, we discuss Ellis' gradual progression from fan through his joining in the mid-1990s right up until the present day via Grinderman and his soundtrack work - discover how a pair of shorts made from flour bags and an early cheeky musical suggestion to Nick Cave cemented his position in one of our very favourite bands. Subscribe to The Quietus Hour podcast here. Thanks to our producer Seb White, The Social for the use of their basement bar and Natalie Quesnel for sorting it all out.
