When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is play guitar. It's an incredible instrument and I just love it.”But what does one do with that creative codependency? Page Hamilton's impactful contributions to rock music were cemented when Helmet wrote and recorded a pair of back-to-back blisters with 1992's Meantime and 1994's Betty. Those pillars of '90s alternative metal and guitar granite forever chiseled out his place in hard-rock history. Since 1989, Hamilton and Helmet have dished out a total of nine studio albums (plus a live set) that balance punishing, fastened-down ferocity with mercurial moments of melody that make their sledgehammer fall harder. Beyond that legacy, Page was a part of David Bowie's band for the 1999 Hours tour, playing Saturday Night Live and being included on two live albums from the Starman. Further diversifying his guitar vocabulary, he's contributed to several film scores for Heat, Titus, In Dreams, Catwoman, and Chicago Cab. He's explored the instrument's outer realms with German avant-garde guitarist Caspar Brötzmann on a live improv album (1996's Zulutime), and expanded his vocabulary by diving into jazz guitar, noting in our Rundown he'll release an album next year. Hamilton has even put out a guitar instruction DVD, Sonic Shapes: Expanding Rock Guitar Vocabulary for Hal Leonard. All of this (and more) accomplished because guitar is his lifeblood. And we found out during our Rig Rundown—filmed May 7, 2024 at Nashville's Exit/In—that most of this material was spawned from three key ingredients, all still in his rig: ESP Horizon guitars, Fryette amps, and DiMarzio humbuckers. These partnerships with each company are not gratuitous or grifting. He's been aligned with ESP since 1989. He started working with DiMarzio in the early '90s, and he and Steven Fryette have sharpened his sound since 1996. These three friendships have fostered an integral strand in Page's tonal DNA, and Hamilton covers each at length with us. Plus, he breaks down the simplifying move from a complicated Bradshaw rack-switching system to something more modern and efficient, with five Boss boxes and a duo of H9s.Shop Page Hamilton's Gear:ESP LTD Horizon 87 Solidbody Electric Guitar - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/9gKdg4 DiMarzio Air Norton - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/k0x2O0 D'Addario EXL140 XL Strings - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/anEGON Eventide H9 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/baQr0x Boss MT-2W Metal Zone Waza Craft - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/AW4MPK Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/1r4d9D Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/JzDdK2 Boss ES-5 Effects Switching System - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/ZQgj6K Pedaltrain Nano+ - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/XYJ9mGFull Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/helmet-2024Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - D'Addario Strings0:15 - Chris Kies Intro1:43 - Page Hamilton Intro3:09 - ESP LTD PH-6004:23 - ESP LTD...

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersHelmet are a niche kind of band in that once you discover them you can't help but fall in love with their music. The problem is, they are also not a band given much exposure in commercial channels, which makes the task of discovering them ultimately harder. But infinitely more rewarding.Formed by Page Hamilton in 1989 - with Hamilton being the sole original member still in the band - Helmet have had a stop/start career, punctuated by a 6-year siesta from 1998 to 2004, but have consistently churned out high quality, and musically diverse albums. While their popularity peaked with the 1992 album Meantime and 1994's Betty, Helmet have always maintained an ever-increasing fan base, due largely to the talent and vision of their enigmatic frontman.Their latest album Left has been a long seven years in the making, with Hamilton taking time to chat to HEAVY about the final product. We start by asking how the album has been received."Everybody tells me all the positive stuff," he smiled, "so as far as I know, positive (laughs). I don't read reviews and I don't pay attention. They send me emails saying you got this add and that add, and it's number 1 metal album in Australia on Spotify, and it all means next to nothing to me. My job's done as far as the album is concerned once it's released. Essentially, once it's mastered and the artworks done, and I pass it off to the label then I just have to learn the songs live and that's my job. I can't worry about the other stuff."Having an established fan base often means certain expectations when it comes to new music, with Hamilton admitting it has been an issue in the past."I don't know about now, but I think early on with Helmet mark 2 everybody had expectations because the band had been gone for a while, and it wasn't the same rhythm section," he offered. "So, of course, we had expectations, but the first album was Size Matters in 2003 or 2004 when it came out after the hiatus - the band broke up in '98 - and I remember Decibel Magazine reviewed the album and a few years later they re-reviewed it, and they were like 'we were wrong about this one. It's a really great album, it just doesn't sound like Betty or Meantime'. You are always gonna come up against that. If you do an album that everybody holds in high esteem or a couple of albums, then people want that for the rest of their lives, I guess. But… I couldn't write the same song over and over again. It's just not in my DNA. I had a conversation… I sang and played on a Linkin Park song and Mike Shinoda said 'yeah man we made our first album and sold millions of records so we made our second album exactly the same' and I said yeah, my approach is different. I like to do the opposite. Some people are cool with it and some people are not cool with it."In the full interview, Page talks more about Left, its musical direction, expectations following the success of their previous album Dead To The World in 2016 and runs through HEAVY's review of Left and gives his opinion on what we thought.

Sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn , Reynolds Landscaping & Lawncare, Everest Counseling (Farmington, Mo)Helmet, the iconic alternative metal band that emerged from New York City in the late 1980s, stands as a testament to the power of artistic innovation within the realm of heavy music. Founded by frontman and guitarist Page Hamilton, Helmet has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and metal with their unique blend of raw aggression, intricate songwriting, and thought-provoking lyrics. The band's journey began in 1989 when they released their debut album, "Strap It On," on the independent label Amphetamine Reptile Records. This album, marked by its deceptively simple yet highly effective riffing, immediately caught the attention of fans and critics alike. Page Hamilton's fractured soloing style and distinct vocal delivery set Helmet apart from the burgeoning alternative music scene, where they stood as a harbinger of a new era in heavy music.Helmet's breakthrough came with their second album, "Meantime," released in 1992 on Interscope Records. This album showcased Hamilton's songwriting prowess and cemented the band's status as a heavy-hitting force in the industry. Tracks like "Unsung" and "In the Meantime" became anthems for a generation, and the album itself achieved Gold certification, signifying its enduring impact. What sets Helmet apart from many of their peers is their dedication to musical intricacy and innovation. Page Hamilton, a trained jazz guitarist with a background in avant-garde music, brought a level of sophistication to their heavy sound that was unparalleled. The band's use of drop-D tuning, unconventional time signatures, and dissonant chords created a sonic landscape that challenged the conventions of heavy music. Songs like "Wilma's Rainbow" and "Rollo" exemplify this complexity, offering listeners a glimpse into the band's commitment to pushing the boundaries of their genre. After releasing two more albums, "Betty" in 1994 and "Aftertaste" in 1997, the original lineup of Helmet disbanded in 1998. However, Page Hamilton's artistic journey was far from over. He continued to explore various musical avenues, collaborating with artists like David Bowie, Caspar Brötzmann, and Wire, among others. This period of exploration allowed him to expand his sonic palette and further solidify his status as a musical innovator. In 2004, Hamilton reformed Helmet with an all-new lineup, releasing several albums, including "Size Matters" (2004), "Monochrome" (2006), "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010), and "Dead To The World" (2016). These albums demonstrated that Helmet's spirit of innovation and uncompromising intensity remained intact, even with a new lineup. In 2023, Helmet announced the release of their ninth studio album, "Left," set to be released on November 10th on earMUSIC. This announcement was accompanied by the "Look Left Tour," taking the band through various regions of North America. It marked their first tour since the pandemic, and fans eagerly anticipated hearing new material from this legendary band.Helmet's journey through the realms of heavy music and artistic innovation has been nothing short of remarkable. Page Hamilton's unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions has led to the creation of music that transcends genres and continues to captivate audiences. Helmet's legacy as pioneers of alternative metal is secure, and their enduring influence on heavy music is a testament to the enduring power of artistic innovation. All equipment used in the making of this video:Shure Sm7b https://amzn.to/3uAMzMAShure Sm58 https://amzn.to/3xlAj4pBoom Arm Desktop Mic Stand https://amzn.to/3rlZtvGMixcast 4 Audio Mixer https:/This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Interview by Kris PetersHelmet - led the whole time by frontman Page Hamilton - have been a mainstay on the hard rock scene for more than three decades now.Although never quite cracking the global mainstream market Helmet have still managed to play an influential role in the lives of countless music lovers, with a fanatically loyal underground fan base that rivals any other. Now, after a prolongued absence for them from our shores, Helmet are set to return this April for The Best Of Helmet Australian Tour taking in Newcastle, Sydney, Hobart, Perth, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.Known for their frenetic two hour plus live shows, Helmet have long held an affinity with Australian crowds with Hamilton admitting the band are pumped for the run of shows."We started this thing out in Prague back in early September, and it was kind of daunting at first trying to figure out how to make a set flow with 30 songs and just two hours of Helmet music - no opening band. But we got a groove going after a couple of shows and we added a bunch of songs that have never been performed live before and some that haven't been performed since 1991, 92. I find that when you bring new stuff - or new old stuff - into the set, it injects new life into the rest of the things that you've played quite a lot over the course of 30 years. It's been really fun. I'm surprised at how much fun it's been and I love doing it."In the full interview Hamilton runs over what to expect from the shows, fitting 30 years of material into one setlist, how Helmet's music has changed over the years, his greatest musical achievement, some of his side projects and what's happening with them, the early days of Helmet, his early vision and how it has changed since, steering clear of musical trends, what he has learned along the journey and more.

On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Page Hamilton from Helmet live at Aftershock, in Sacramento, California. Page starts by talking about how impressed he is with how far Aftershock has come since the first time they played it, when it was a gravel dusty parking lot with a porta potty a mile away from the stage. He says they seem to have taken some tips from European festivals. The guys touch on the pandemic, talking about the psychological effect the pandemic has had on them as they've been touring for so long, and then to suddenly stop was a shock to the system. Paige says he took touring for granted. The guys move on to speak about the struggles of being at festivals that people may not realize bands have to go through, whether it be sound issues or an array of potential problems which are out of their control, which just makes it all the more satisfying when you come to an event like Aftershock and it's run so well. During the pandemic, the guys did their first live album, which is something they've wanted to do for a while and required a lot of work transferring tapes and getting everything set up, but the pandemic allowed them to have the time to do that. Pipeman finishes off by asking Page about a story he's going to tell when he's 80, where he talks about meeting JP the drummer from Clutch along with a couple other anecdotes from their years of being together. Pipeman in the Pit is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. Topics covered in this jam packed episode: The New York indie scene of the early 90s, cancelling 250 shows, Page's time playing in Band Of Susans, odd time signatures, having a Gabed-up year, Scott and Page geek out over Gang Of Four, Amphetamine Reptile, time signatures, the post-Nirvana major label feeding frenzy, why Germans love Helmet, Gabe finally saw GET BACK, and Page fondly recollects his days playing guitar for David Bowie(!). We do 90's a lot. But we've been saving this absolute gem for a while. Helmet's '94 sledgehammer classic release, "Betty" refined the band's bite and helped redefine alt rock and metal for years and genres to come. All muscle, sinew and beer-cool melodies. Plus, Alex tries and fails to keep his composure, as maelstrom maestro and riff swinger Page Hamilton himself joins us for a detailed, insightful and fun chat looking at all this timeless, hook laden monster.

10 Albums - The Soundtrack of Your Life

As we approach the 3 year date of the tragic death of Chester Bennington - Grey Daze provides a look back into the beginnings of this incredibly talented musician... "Amends is an upcoming remix album by Grey Daze composed of Chester Bennington's vocals from the 90's over newly recorded instrumentals. "What's In The Eye" was released as the first “fan track” from the project on January 17, 2020 and was co-produced by Chris Traynor, Kyle Hoffman and Jay Baumgardner. The first single, "Sickness" featuring Page Hamilton and produced by Pete Nappi, was released on February 6th.[1] The release of the album was postponed from April 10th to June 26th due to the Covid-19 outbreak.[2][3] According to Sean, their distribution system was affected by the crisis and they thought it was unfair with fans who purchased physical copies to simply release the album digitally on the original date.[4] The band has no intention to tour without Chester or replace him with another vocalist and turned down every offer to play shows they got.[5]They are, however, open to the idea to do a tribute show with other singers if the right opportunity presents itself and it is done in a way that honors Chester." -linkinpedia Unreal vocals from Chester Bennington on this sleeper album!! It blew my expectations away.

Helmet will be touring Australia in May, celebrating a distinguished 30-year career by assembling a special collection of 30 songs to showcase the bands' history."We started this thing out in Prague back in early September", details Page Hamilton, vocalist and lead guitarist, "and it was kind of daunting at first trying to figure out how to get a set flow with 30 songs of just Helmet music with no support band. We got a groove going after a couple of shows and we've added a bunch of songs that have never been performed live before and some that hadn't been performed since '91, '92. I find when you bring new stuff - or new old stuff - into the set it injects new life into the rest of the things that you've played over the course of thirty years. It's been really fun. I'm surprised by how much fun it's been and I love doing it".In the full interview Page discusses the selection process for the 30 songs, how his songwriting has changed since he started, how moving to New York to study jazz led to him forming Helmet, his early vision for the band and how it has changed, following trends in music, regrets and things he would have done differently and more.

Helmet: Recorded  & mixed by Branko Cosic Recorded at the Brightside, Brisbane, 30th April 2017 The original Helmet line up, consisting of Page Hamilton on guitar and vocals, Brisbane-born Peter Mengede on guitar, Henry Bogdan on bass and John Stainer on drums, formed in 1989 in New York City. Quickly signing to Amphetamine Reptile Records, they release their debut album Strap It On the year after. This led the band to be signed by Interscope Records in early 1992, with label mates including Primus, Nine Inch Nails, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Their first Interscope release Meantime   (1992) was certified gold and remains Helmets biggest commercial success to date. Betty (1994) soon followed, bringing the band to our shores to play the now legendary Livid Festival 1994 line up featuring Beastie Boys, Superchunk, Frank Black and Tumbleweed. A falling out between Hamilton and Mengede in 1993 meant Peter didn’t make the trip out, but returned to reside in Brisbane in later years. This would be the first of many line up changes for the band, with Hamilton remaining the only constant member. Once touring Aftertaste over 1997-98, Helmet disbanded before reforming again in 2004 to release Size Matters. They have released a total of 8 studios albums and remain one of the most influential bands of the alternative rock movement. In 2017, Helmet returned to Brisbane for the first time since 2011, as part of their ‘Betty’ retrospective tour. This set features selections from the album as well as tracks from their latest LP Dead To The World and fan favourites from their lengthy back catalogue. Spliced in throughout the set is an interview conducted by Branko Cosic with founding member Page Hamilton.

Helmet's Page Hamilton is a world class guitarist, a ‘90s alt-rock titan and a music lifer. He may very well be the only person who has played shows with Nirvana and the upstarts on Warped Tour. Here he's throwing some real talk (and a little shade), but that's only because he hates anything that gets in the way of his love of music.

Dave Case sat down with us for an in-depth conversation about the bands he’s currently in and his overall approach to playing music in general. About 8 years ago, Dave got a call from the legendary guitarist and vocalist, Page Hamilton. After lengthy auditions, he was asked to play in one of his all-time favorite bands, HELMET. His approach to being in that band from then until now mirrors the way he has always approached almost all aspects of his life. He takes all roles in his busy life seriously, gives it his all and has an admirable philosophy in the way he chooses to be a team player with his band-mates, co-workers, friendships and relationships. Dave starts off this interview with talking about how he got in to Helmet and the overall history of being in that band. He discusses how the band works and his relationship with a man he clearly respects and admires, Page Hamilton. Dave gets us up to date with his other projects he’s working on including KILLER HILL and AFTERBIRTH. He talks about the similarities and differences between all the bands, his position in those bands and how he juggles that, his work life and his marriage. As a musician, Dave is talented enough to stand on his own and do what he wants to do. As a band member, he’s there to create music WITH you and wants to support whatever’s going on in the song. He’s the consummate bass player and he enjoys maximizing playing in that pocket his band members have created for him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dave Case’s Current bands HELMET https://www.helmetmusic.com/ KILLER HILL https://killerhill1.bandcamp.com/ AFTER BIRTH https://afterbirthnydeathmetal.bandcamp.com/ Dave sometimes plays with the guys in Fawnn: Please check them out here-->https://soundcloud.com/fawwn Some of Dave Case’s previous bands (if anyone has better links, let us know and we’ll update them) THE JET BLACK HEART ATTACK https://www.facebook.com/thejbha/ EARTHLING MASSIVE https://www.last.fm/music/Earthling+Massive/+tracks EXPLODER ONE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-Gyg7W1C7Y Dave also mentioned these important people: You can check out Joe Cincotta and FULL FORCE STUDIO at http://fullforcestudio.com/ and Keith Moore, an excellent producer who has recorded and produced a lot of Dave's and our musical projects. - Contact Keith at https://www.instagram.com/iamkeithmoore/ To Contact DAVE CASE directly..., Good Luck with that....

Volume 12 of our Radio Sucks Radio Show came a little early but that's okay. We've been saving this one for a while. Why? Well, it could be any number of reasons (ie. a guest cancelled, a scheduling issue, we wanted a week off) but it doesn't matter because we're still back this week to provide you with some great music that the schmucks from corporate radio are just not giving you.   We start of with something brand new and Chris' pick of a track from the recently-released Motherland album by Pretty Maids. The inspiration to play this track comes from Chiaki of the Metal Moment podcast who spun a track from their previous album that got our attention. Pretty Maids is an outstanding band with a  large catalog of music that sadly doesn't get enough attention in the States. We hope to help change that with the opening track from their new album on Frontiers Records. Aaron kicks off his choices with a great pick from Helmet's 1992 Meantime album. A band that truly deserved to be bigger, Helmet were ahead of their time and stuck in a strange time in the musical landscape that was very transitional. Listening back to this hard-hitting track helps one to appreciate how innovative Page Hamilton and crew really were. It's no secret around the Decibel Geek offices that we love Russ Dwarf. After all, he was the first interview we conducted after Aaron joined the show and our Canadian writers have done a great job spreading the word about his endeavors. We tip our hat to our diminutive friend from the Great White North with a selection from his new Wireless EP that features acoustic takes on Killer Dwarfs classic.  Another band that certainly didn't fit into their time period was Life Sex & Death (L.S.D.). Of course, any band fronted by a homeless person is probably not going to fit in to their scene. Led by the eccentric Stanley, Aaron's choice of a track from their Silent Majority album from 1992 showcases the quirky but talented band in a good light. We may not be able to pronounce the song title, but it's pretty clear that it rocks. We return from the first break with a track that was recorded when Poison had the Blues....Saraceno, that is. Crack a Smile was an album that was recorded with the gifted plaid-clad guitarist replacing a replacement of an original guitarist. After CC Deville imploded from drugs and Richie Kotzen was shown the door after "relations" with a band members girlfriend, the L.A.-based glam band recruited Saraceno to provide his technical expertise to their next record. Unfairly ignored for years due to being shelved after it's 1995 recording; the album finally got a proper release in 2000 to little fanfare as Deville had returned to the fold by then. We spin a track off this highly underrated album. Chris & Aaron usually see eye-to-eye on many of the artists featured on the Decibel Geek podcast but one artist that splits them down the middle is Gilby Clarke. Chris never liked him; Aaron does. Aaron tries to sway Chris' stance on Clarke with a track from his pre-GNR band Kill for Thrills. Will Chris change is his mind? Listen and see. Not much needs to be said when it comes to the greatness of Van Halen's 1978 self-titled debut. It was influential, intense, and revolutionary. Chris' choice of a rarely-spun-on-radio track features everything that makes this early VH-era amazing; great harmonies, incredible guitar playing, and total charisma in a singer. Dream big. If you asked many hard rock/metal fans what they thought of when they heard the name Weezer, you'd typically hear answers referring to sweaters, Buddy Holly, or living Beverly Hills. While the band is well-known for their ironic turns-of-phrases and poppy hooks, there's lots of harder edged stuff that many people don't know about. Aaron's track selection from their Maladroit album is a clear indication that Weezer is a band worth investigating. Some of our most popular shows, without question, revolve around Vinnie Vincent. Listeners can't seem to get enough of the behind-the-scenes stories provided by some of our past guests regarding the troubled guitarist. While that stuff is interesting, we want to also show the most important side of Vincent; the amazingly gifted songwriter/guitarist that, behind all of the rumors and speculation, has penned some great rock music that deserves more notice. We spin a track from the All Systems Go album that proves that point. Closing out the show this week is Aaron's choice of a song from Twisted Sister's mega-selling 1984 classic Stay Hungry. The album is certainly well-known enough based on its singles/videos but we give you a taste of a deep cut that is a monster in its own right. Featured Artist: Screaming Eagles Buy Music!
