As incredibly well written as it is, it can be difficult to watch at times, when the parallels being drawn between what is happening in the fictional Star Wars galaxy and our own are getting clearer with each passing moment. In this brand new style of episode, we break down the timeline for Star Wars: Underworld, all the way from the first rumors of its existence in 2004 to the eventual public acknowledgement of its shelving in 2012, and then a resurgence in interest post Disney acquisition all the way up until 2017. We finish up our Nightsisters arc with two episodes that, combined, we feel give us the strongest story arc we have had up to this point in Clone Wars. While in the short term it is somewhat overshadowed by the Mortis arc that followed it, in the long term this arc has far reaching effects on the Star Wars universe beyond just the animated shows. This week we begin one of the strongest arcs that Clone Wars has had to date, fleshing out the relationship between Asajj Ventress and Dooku, and adding the Nightsisters to George's highest tier of canon. Clone Wars third season gets its first four episode arc, even if one of those episodes is technically from season one, but we get more Cad Bane so who's complaining? Both episodes have something to love about them, from getting to visit a scenic Alderaan to listening to Anthony Daniel's have a great time as C-3PO, so even if the stories themselves aren't the best they're still enjoyable to watch. Well, we have discovered that the Chronological list does appear to be wrong, at least in this case. These two episodes, we believe, are actually the first two episodes of Season 3, and they are maybe the best examples of standalone episodes we have seen so far. Each episode showcases a totally different side of The Clone Wars but they both to it really well. We return to Mandalore to investigate some smugglers who are flooding the black markets with *checks notes* poisoned tea? And we're back with the second part of our Episode 4 discussion after only a small delay! We love the introduction to our new locale, and the continuation of the mystery is both satisfying and intriguing. Let's jump in!Editor's Note - I'm trying a different style of editing to improve the flow of the episodes, but it takes me around twice as long to edit the episodes. Back again for our third episode in less than seven days, this time with some slightly differing opinions on how the show has progressed. We have finally arrived at one of the strongest arcs in all of the Clone Wars early seasons, with a new introduction to Mandalore and its culture that will have long lasting impacts on new Star Wars canon. We return with a true standalone episode which we were surprised to learn came directly from a George Lucas pitch. We continue our watch-through with a very typical Clone Wars episode with some fun lightsaber fights and exciting battles, followed by half of an episode which discusses the moral quandary with using Clones, with the other half being a continuation of the less than exciting chase for Grievous. We end up wishing that the focus had been entirely on the Clones, and the question of whether they are allowed to have free-will, but it does lay some interesting groundwork for later seasons of Clone Wars and The Bad Batch. We finally end our five episode "Second Battle of Geonosis" arc with a two-part horror story line, which we find to be one of the most unique stories told in all of Clone Wars. Somehow managing to delightfully toe the line between scary and fun, it leaves both of us wishing we had more horror themes in Star Wars content. We continue on, a week delayed, with the middle part of our 5-part Geonosis arc. Standing strong on their own, Landing at Point Rain channels the best parts of Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan without becoming too adult, and Weapons Factory takes a hard look at the master-padawan relationship between Ahsoka and Anakin, in a way that is strongly reminiscent of some scenes we have seen recently in Ahsoka's own show. Let's jump in!BECOME A PATRON: https://www.patreon.com/massivebreakdownpodcastsCHAT SERVER: https://discord.gg/C44PeM5RSf
A surprisingly decent episode that feels like the first real attempt at fleshing out Anakin and Padme's relationship in the Clone Wars, and also serves as a bridge to the Geonosis arc. We were surprised to learn that this episode was actually referencing a Hitchcock movie, Notorious, from 1946, which helps to explain why the story ends so strongly. The chronological watch through provides us with a big bonus early in the second season, with a Seven Samurai tribute episode immediately followed by a Godzilla/King Kong arc with the Zillo Beast episodes. After an extended break for Bad Batch and The Acolyte we finally return to our chronological watch through of the Clone Wars series. Disney's annual D23 celebration has wrapped up, and we have a handful of "first looks" at the next four upcoming Star Wars projects. On the heels of the conclusion of The Acolyte and just before Disney's slate of D23 news, we thought we'd take a minute to get everyone up to speed on where all of the upcoming Star Wars TV and film projects are at. We discuss everything we know so far about Skeleton Crew and chat about what we know we have to look forward to over the next couple years. We've finally reached the Season 1 finale, and somehow they managed to pull it off, wrapping up the story and doing it with not a single wasted minute! Maybe one of our longest individual episodes yet, "Choice" has a ton to talk about and really sparks a lot of good conversation around the best way to consume the flashbacks in service to the story. It also successfully pulls off what is very difficult to do in Star Wars, which is painting characters in shades of grey. We're back with episode 6 which is, in our opinion, one of the best "middle of an arc" episodes we've gotten in a Star Wars show to this point. Well written, with good character development, the only flaw is that it seemingly asks more questions than it gives answers, which we find to be a very risky proposition this late in the season. And what a stunning follow-up this episode ended up being! Maybe one of the most jaw-dropping fight scenes we have ever seen in live action Star Wars, and an incredible performance from [spoiler] in their newly revealed role. After this episode, we cannot wait to see where the story goes next! A return to form for The Acolyte, our only criticism of Episode 4 is that we wish there was a little bit more of it. However, the closing minutes of the episode are some of the best Star Wars we've gotten yet, and we're excited to talk about where it leads! Let's jump in!BECOME A PATRON: https://www.patreon.com/massivebreakdownpodcastDESTINY 2 PODS:PVP: https://destiny-massive-breakdowns.captivate.fm/listenPVE: https://pve-podcast-versus-enemies.captivate.fm/listenCHAT SERVER: https://discord.gg/TheyfeQHOME PAGE: https://destinymassivebreakdowns.com
For the first time, we feel like The Acolyte stumbles a bit. Not because of any canon-breaking issues, which in reality are non-issues blown massively out of proportion, but because of an odd tonal shift with an incomplete feeling episode that doesn't add enough to the current mysteries to be worth the full diversion from the core story line. Episode 2 picks up right where Episode 1 left off, making us happy they released them together. With a strong showing from the central cast, some fun introductions to a couple new characters, and some smart mystery-setting alongside upending typical tropes of the genre, this episode gets bonus points from us! With two episodes that really feel like they should have been combined into one singular finale, we have finally reached the end of The Bad Batch. Really feeling the spaced out release schedule now with these episodes, Into the Breach is a solid story but feels incomplete without the surrounding episodes. With these two episodes we experience a bit of tonal whiplash following so close on the heels of the excellent and very dark Identity Crisis, but there's some good stuff to be found. Point of No Return is a solidly decent episode, although at times we wish it had pushed the stakes a little higher, and Juggernaut is a return to typical Bad Batch fare for better or worse, though it has some good humor and excellent animation.
