In this heartfelt conversation, host Joel Rosenberg is joined by Gal Lavie, Director of the Founder’s Office at the Joshua Fund and an IDF reservist, to address a devastating tragedy that has shaken both Israel and the United States: the recent murder of two young Israeli diplomats, Yaron Lischinsky and his soon-to-be fiancée, Sarah Milgrim, in Washington, DC. Joel and Gal share personal memories of Yaron—an accomplished, passionate, and peace-driven young man well-respected within Israel's evangelical Christian community. Together, they reflect on the grief and outrage felt by Israelis, the Jewish community, and friends of Israel around the world, and examine the surge in antisemitism that contributed to this horrific act. Joel and Gal place this tragedy within the broader context of ongoing conflict and struggle in the region, discussing not only the personal loss but also the implications for Israeli diplomatic security, the enduring pain of war, and the continued need for prayer, comfort, and solidarity. Listeners are invited to join them in honoring the lives of Yaron and Sarah, supporting their families, and praying for peace and protection for all those affected by this profound loss. Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat who delivered a eulogy at President Jimmy Carter's funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. Ambassador Eizenstat shares about Carter's domestic and international successes including the Camp David Accords and how the former president's sincere words and developed personal relationship made an impact to key principals when the talks were about to fail. Carter's tireless efforts led the foundational cornerstone for treaties with Israel's Arab neighbors including Jordan and later through the Trump Administration's Abraham Accords. Ambassador Eizenstat also shares about his personal friendship with the former president. He was at Jimmy Carter's side from his political rise in Georgia through four years in the White House, where he served as Chief Domestic Policy Adviser. He was directly involved in all domestic and economic decisions as well as in many foreign policy ones. The conversation on America's Roundtable also brings to the forefront President Carter's bold economic reforms and how he came to be called the "Champion of Deregulation" by former Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX), a fiscal conservative leader. In an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, Senator Gramm stated, " The Carter administration began oil-price deregulation using its regulatory powers and set in place the gradual deregulation of natural-gas prices with the 1978 Natural Gas Policy Act. And while the deregulation of the communications industry was driven by technological change, court decisions, regulatory action and finally legislation, the Carter regulatory reform through the Federal Communications Commission made competition the driving force in the development of policy. Energy deregulation, championed by Mr. Carter and then by Ronald Reagan, produced abundant oil and gas supplies." Brief bio: During a decade and a half of public service in six U.S. administrations, Ambassador Eizenstat has held a number of key senior positions, including Chief White House Domestic Policy Adviser to President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981); U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs, and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the Clinton Administration (1993-2001). His recommendation to President Carter to create the Presidential Commission on the Holocaust headed by Elie Wiesel led directly to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, for which he is recognized as a key founder. Ambassador Eizenstat is an author of "President Carter: The White House Years" and "The Art of Diplomacy" During the Trump administration, he was appointed by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as Expert Adviser to the State Department on Holocaust-Era Issues (2018-2021). In the Biden administration, serving as Special Adviser to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Holocaust Issues, he played a major role in the negotiation of the Best Practices for the Washington Principles on Nazi-Confiscated Art (2024), now supported by 25 countries. He was appointed by President Biden as Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Council (2022-present). Since 2009, he has served as pro bono Special Negotiator for the Jewish Claims Conference in negotiations with the German government, obtaining billions of dollars of benefits for poor Holocaust survivors, for home care, social and medical services, enhanced pensions, hardship payments, child survivor and Kindertransport survivors, special supplemental payments for the poorest of the poor, and worldwide educational benefits. americasrt.com (https://americasrt.com/) https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 X: @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Feature: 1972 Munich Hostage Crisis broadcast gets revisited in ‘September 5,’ we discuss the film with its director. Movies centered on journalists have been somewhat of a trend over the years, with Spotlight and The Post serving as recent examples, and some older classics like All The President’s Men and The Insider. Writer-director Tim Fehlbaum’s latest project, September 5, looks to add to the tradition with a timely story of broadcast journalists attempting to cover an international incident in real-time. The film follows the 1972 Munich Olympics, with its inciting incident being 11 Israeli hostages held by Palestinian militants. It was coverage that was watched by roughly 900 million viewers, showing just how serious this event was. Hansjörg Weißbrich, the film’s editor, creates tension despite most of the film being set in one building; his work on the film has since been acknowledged by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which awarded September 5 for its Best Editing category. For this week’s feature, we talk to filmmaker Tim Fehlbaum about the making of September 5 and the work it took to revisit a dark moment in history.

Christmas in Tehran: Bringing the Holidays to Hostages

In 1979, as Christmas approached, the United States Embassy in Tehran held more than fifty American hostages, who had been seized when revolutionaries stormed the embassy. No one from the U.S. had been able to have contact with them. The Reverend M. William Howard, Jr., was the president of the National Council of Churches at the time, and when he received a telegram from the Revolutionary Council, inviting him to perform Christmas services for the hostages, he jumped at the opportunity. In America, “we had a public that was quite riled up,” Reverend Howard reminds his son, The New Yorker Radio Hour's Adam Howard. “Who knows what might have resulted if this issue were not somehow addressed? . . .Might there be an American invasion, an attempt to rescue the hostages in a militaristic way?” Reverend Howard was aware that the gesture had some propaganda value to the Iranian militants, but he saw a chance to lower the tension. Accompanied by another Protestant minister and a Catholic bishop, Howard entered front-page headlines, travelling to Tehran and into the embassy. He gave the captives updates on the N.F.L. playoffs, and they prayed. It was a surreal experience to say the least. “It was in the Iranian hostage crisis that I understood how alone we are, and how powerless we are when other people take control,” Reverend Howard says. “And really it's in that setting that one can develop faith.”
