Israel pressed forward on two fronts Wednesday, pursuing a ground incursion into Lebanon against Hezbollah that left eight Israeli soldiers dead and conducting strikes in Gaza that killed dozens, including children. Europe looks set to toughen migration laws amid a surge in support for far-right parties across the continent. And scientists have produced the first wiring diagram of the complete brain of a fruit fly. Why they did it and what it means for human brains.

Adiel Cohen remembers Oct. 7 like it was yesterday. He was at his sister's house in Northern Israel when he woke up to hear his phone buzzing with rocket alerts and notifications. His first-ever panic attack washed over him as he realized he would quickly be called back into the army—which happened immediately after Shabbat. That night, Cohen filled a backpack with a few essentials and travelled south on the eerily quiet roads. After his time fighting in the south, he returned to his studies at Tel Aviv University, but didn't stop fighting for his country. Instead of prepping rocket launchers near Gaza, he took to TikTok and Instagram to argue against anti-Zionists describing his home country as a land of colonizing Europeans. For Cohen, this line of attack is particularly egregious, as one of his biggest inspirations is his grandmother, who came to Israel from Yemen decades ago. Cohen joins Rivkush, The CJN's podcast about Jews of colour, to talk about the history of Yemeni Jews, share his war stories and explain why watermelon is actually a very Israeli fruit. It has been nearly six months since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war, and Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a rare apology for the recent deaths of seven aid workers killed in an airstrike in Gaza. International pressure mounted for both Israel and the United States after this strike, as President Biden offered swift criticism for Netanyahu's failure to protect aid workers and Gazan civilians. The President stopped short of drawing a red line with U.S. military aid to Israel; however, this event only furthered the tensions between the two world leaders. FOX News foreign correspondent Trey Yingst joins the Rundown to explain the global fallout from the deaths of the World Central Kitchen aid workers, the potential escalation in the region with the Israeli strike on Damascus, and the dangers posed to the Israeli Defense Force if they stay in Gaza too long. The release of the docuseries "Quiet On Set" has brought increased attention to the treatment of child actors, with numerous former child stars calling out the abuse and mistreatment they faced while working on television and movie productions. Former stars are now speaking up and advocating for legislation that protects the welfare of child actors. Actor and advocate Alyson Stoner joins the podcast to discuss the challenges they faced during their time as child stars, the details of the "Kidfluencer Protection Act" that they are pushing to get passed in Ohio, and the heavy mental toll that the acting industry can have on adolescents. Plus, commentary by a former investment banker and author of 'You Will Own Nothing,' Carol Roth. Photo Credit: AP Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

As Yaakov prepares to meet Esav, he sends messengers with a cryptic message: “I have lived with Lavan.” What does this mean? Why does Yaakov say he fears Esav will attack one camp but spare the other? And why does he tell Esav that despite living with Lavan, he kept all the Mitzvos - would Esav care? This week, we gain insight into the two-front battle we must continuously be ready to fight. How can we ensure we have the right intentions when performing Mitzvos? How did living in Lavan's house strengthen Yaakov's commitment to Hashem's path? And what is the deeper message behind the seemingly redundant plea "Save me from my brother, from Esav"? Join us on this episode of the Prism of Torah as we explore how Yaakov's dramatic confrontation with Esav teaches an incredibly relevant message for our own battles in life. The story reveals the true battle we all face and will give us the Siyata Dishmaya to face our enemies, external and internal, as Yaakov Avinu did so long ago. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prismoftorah/message

You might have always wanted to be an academic, but what if your academic research brought up a groundbreaking technology that you knew could dramatically revolutionize industrial processes? Would you choose to stay in academia or pivot to industry and bring your idea to market? Well, it is possible to do both! This episode's guest, Simon Rittman, shares with our host, Tina Persson, all about his experience with founding a company while still holding a position in academia. Simon Rittmann is the CSO and co-founder of Arkeon, a biotechnology company focused on alternative food production technologies. Additionally, he serves as the Principal Investigator at the Archaea Physiology & Biotechnology group at the University of Vienna, where he also shares his passion through teaching. Simon and Tina discuss the crucial steps and the strategic planning that go into building a start-up as an academic, highlighting the importance of finding the right people to help bring one's entrepreneurial vision to life. Further in the episode, they delve into the personal qualities needed to take the leap. They also talk about the concept of a dual career, how to keep “one foot in academia, one foot in the industry”, the motivations behind that choice, and how to manage both. With Simon's advice, you will learn that you can have the best of both worlds, if only you are flexible, open to personal growth and pick the right business-minded people to complement your scientific skills and build a great team! The planet Onderon has seceded from the Republic and joined the Separatist Alliance under a new king. Rebel forces have fled into the jungle and appeal to the Jedi for help. Oh wait, this happened at the start of the clone war by the legitimate government under a new king. The rebels claim he's a traitor though so it's totally fine.Anakin, completely off the cuff, invents the School of the Americas to help the freedom fighters on Separatist planets ensure their liberty? The fact that Padme is a majority stakeholder in Space Chiquita Bananas is probably coincidental. Yoda is down to help, but Obi-Wan pegs this as enabling terrorism. Anakin, because he's the worst, states that this is actually an insurgency and… points for vocab I guess. The Jedi council is split between pragmatists and idealists with Yoda and Obi-Wan suggesting that terror should not be a means to an end. Anakin and Mace suggest that they're merely helping Rebels, and Jedi Master Honru Kissingeru is getting real sweaty in the background. Anakin Ahsoka and Rex head to Onderon as ‘advisors' with Obi Wan to keep an eye on them.We meet Saw Gerrara for the first time riding a Tarakian mount. On a scale of Forest Whitaker, he's a lot closer to Fast Times at Ridgemont High than Rogue One at this point in his life. We also meet Steela and, hey, it's Lux Bonteri! Obi-Wan and Anakin hide behind polite fictions by stating that they aren't here to fight the war for the Onderonians. Ahsoka and Lux start talking about old times and Steela gets jealous. If Ahsoka were Kit Fisto's apprentice she'd already be engaging in some hands on training with them both, but she's only got Anakin so she immediately gets confused and sulky. RSVP Nandor the Relentless. The Rebels go through training and we see how much better at this Rex is than normal people. Shenanigans and training montages ensue. Lux and Saw apparently are rivals for leadership and all I can think of is the Bolshievek revolution. Trotsky lived a long and happy life right? The rebels have had many successful missions with zero civilian casualties, but the local population is on edge. The new King summons his predecessor and tells him to call off the attacks… which the old King denies he has a hand in since he is a prisoner and cannot leave the castle. We cut to the rebels talking about earning the civilian's trust, which they feel they can get if they hit one big target: A power station that powers all the droids. Saw Gerrara steals one of the B1's heads to grab the layout of the power substations. They stage a small attack to lure out a tank they need. Destroyers are sent, and their “slow-roll” training proves successful. A tank shows up, and they manage to disable it, then move on to complete their plan and destroy the power station. Soon the droids will forever sleep. The civilians are now cheering on the rebels. During the celebration, jealousy rears its ugly head again and Anakin tells Ahsoka to stay focused in a real “pot calling the kettle black” kind of moment. The Jedi, via Spacetime™, give an inspiring speech on how to proceed next. The King gives an update to Dooku, who tells the King he's sending more troops and a new general. We cut back to Steela, giving her own inspiring speech, being nominated as the leader… which rubs Saw the wrong way. He rushes out, Steela chases after him and reveals that Saw is her brother.https://twitter.com/ClosingCrawlhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/closing-crawl/id1530133296https://www.closingcrawl.com/Merch at: https://bit.ly/spacetimetm

A fresh documentary has been released on PBS that explores a rich, but complicated history of the Buffalo Soldiers. Film director Dru Holley says these 19th century troops fought military conflicts abroad all while being confronted with civil rights struggles at home. Join us for a special edition of I SEE U that honors the national holiday, JUNETEENTH. Host Eddie Robinson chats with documentarian Dru Holley, as he shares his inspiration behind the film, Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts. Plus, I SEE U travels to the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston to learn more about the many troops, who had been former slaves in the South, that were now suddenly wearing a uniform of the United States Army. The museum's exhibitions director and historian, Cale Carter II, provides insight into the challenges researchers are facing today as it relates to bias at certain phases of study and data collection. We find out how this dynamic could impact the next generation of learning and knowledge of Black military history.
After the ratification of the 14th Amendment in 1868, many Black men enlisted in the military as a way to earn both income and respect in U.S. society. Despite facing many barriers within the military, Black soldiers fought in many wars and conflicts, both at home and abroad. A new documentary from Vancouver-based filmmaker Dru Holley explores the complicated legacy of Black soldiers, particularly their role participating in the subjugation of Indigenous peoples. We talk to Holley about “Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts,” which airs on OPB TV Monday, June 12.

On Monday's show: The first days of Houston's public schools under new management have been dramatic. A new superintendent has been installed. A new board of managers has been sworn in. New policies are going into place. And there's the same old protests about all of it. We assess the opening days of a new era for Houston ISD with the help of News 88.7 reporters Dominic Anthony Walsh and Rebecca Noel. Also this hour: Tonight at 9, Houston Public Media, TV 8 will air Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts. The documentary chronicles the story of the African-American troops who served our nation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a time of great racial discrimination and segregation. We hear an excerpt of a visit to the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston from an upcoming edition of I See U with Eddie Robinson, which debuts June 17. Then, Meg Tapp of The Garden Club of Houston answers your questions. And we get an update on sports from Jeff Balke.
During a recent period of unrest in the troubled Palestinian territories producer Brian Kenny travelled to meet those Palestinian women who are suffering both under the Israeli occupation and in a deeply patriarchal society. In the Hebron hills, we hear from a community denied access to their lands, education, and in some cases electricity. We hear how one strong woman rose up against all the odds facing down the IDF and illegal settlers to build a school ensuring the education of future generations. In the Gaza strip, described by one resident as an open prison, the community workers tell us about the daily struggles facing its inhabitants but primarily how it is the women that suffer the most, be it through a lack of access to education and rule over their own lives, or living in daily fear of Israeli attacks. "Fighting on Two Fronts" showcases the struggles and triumphs of these women, highlighting their determination to fight for their rights and make a difference in their communities. From organizing protests at great personal risk to campaigning in their communities' Palestinian women are often at the forefront of a difficult struggle for justice. Fighting on two Fronts was produced and edited by Brian Kenny (www.kennysound.com) with the aid of funding from the BAI's Sound and Vision programme. Voice over and translation by Dina Al Jaro.
The Los Angeles Galaxy debuted at home in a 1-1 comeback draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, March 18, 2023. LA was denied a win after a Dejan Joveljić goal was disallowed, while a supporter group protest meant the Galaxy battled on two fronts.

After the EU finally came to an agreement with Hungary over financial aid for Ukraine, all eyes are now on Poland and its own protracted conflict with Brussels over its rule-of-law inadequacies. Meanwhile, a series of public spats between Warsaw and Berlin has drawn attention to the rifts within the EU and a new East-West divide. The heroes try to head the villains off at the pass by dividing and (hopefully) conquering in a preemptive strike. Mirko kicks arse, Garaki gets cornered, and Kaminari gains some confidence. A nuclear conflict could be sparked by either side making a calculated decision to use nuclear weapons (and you're fooling yourself if you believe the US is any less trigger happy in that regard than Russia), but it can also be sparked by either side due to a mistake resulting from a technological malfunction, miscommunication, misunderstanding or miscalculation, as nearly happened many times during the last cold war. The more things escalate, the more likely both such possibilities become. And, clearly, things are escalating. And that's just Russia; tensions are rapidly escalating between the US-centralized empire and China as well. In an article for Antiwar.com titled "There's Little More Washington Can Do To Convince China To Invade Taiwan," Andrew Corbley describes the frighteningly extensive provocations the US has been pouring into another massive geopolitical powderkeg just in the past few weeks. Bashar Murad's danceable riffs and live concerts and videos - filled with bubbles, enormous hats, and layers and layers of veils - have earned him the nickname "Palestinian Lady Gaga" from his fans. And much like Born This Way is an anthem of equality, Murad's songs challenge conservative social norms and push for LGBTQ rights while also challenging the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. Earlier this summer, Murad's concert in the West Bank city of Ramallah was cancelled under threats by anti-LGBTQ activists. As an outspoken proponent of LGBTQ rights, Murad is challenging both the external conflict Palestinians face with Israel and the internal conflicts imposed by a conservative society. This week, NPR's Daniel Estrin speaks with Bashar Murad about his music, his activism, and how anti-LGBTQ events that unfolded during the summer have added to the complexities that can come with being a voice for both the Palestinian and the LGBTQ communities. In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment that will help you make sense of what's going on in your community. With today's episode, we bring The Clone Wars Season 4 to an end and kick Season 5 off with, if not a bang, then at least the death of a somewhat major Jedi. Our Favorite Zabrak, Savage Opress (ugh) is back! And this time, he's got a brother turned partner in crime turned abusive boss. While these eps do have some low lows, they also have a few extremely high highs: A diner, a warehouse worker who steals our heart, an Obi-Wan/Ventress flirt-a-thon, and... finally... at least some of our hearts melting for a fan favorite character we have really hated up until now. Hot on the heels of our arc about brotherhood, we have another sibling story — and this time, it's about Saw and Steela Gerrera. Our recap of the first half of the Onderon Arc (The Clone Wars 5.2–3, “A War on Two Fronts” and “Front Runners”) throws us into a rebellion of Anakin's making. There is a fantastic training montage, a sort of meh love triangle between Ahsoka, Steela and Lux, and a delightful heist that brings the rebellion to new heights. We talk about overachieving daughters and proxy wars of history. Most importantly, we celebrate Anakin giving extremely good dad-vice to Ahsoka. Snips and Skyguy 4ever. Next week, we're finishing off the Onderon Arc with 5.4–5, “The Soft War” and “Tipping Points.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/growingupskywalker/message
In this episode, Anne Marie interviews Airforce Veteran and Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle member Nick Brooks. They came to be known as Buffalo Soldiers. Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts explores the often-contradictory role played by the Black soldiers throughout American history, emphasizing the settling of the American West and colonialism abroad.Director Dru Holley is a Northwest-based filmmaker, and the documentary features interviews with Quintard Taylor (Ph.D. Historian at UW), Ryan Booth (Ph.D. Candidate, WSU), and members of the Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle, among many others.
