Kenny Williams the 5'10 point guard, a legend at UIC, arrived at UIC in the fall of 1990 and he left an indelible mark on the program over the next four seasons. Artis Gilmore shares with us the ABA merger with the NBA, and how he wanted to dominated the game on both ends of the floor. While At Jacksonville University, Gilmore became one of five college basketball players ever to average at least 20 points and 20 rebounds over his career at 24.3 and 22.7. He led the NCAA in rebounding both years at Jacksonville, and his career average of 22.7 rebounds per game is still the highest in NCAA Division I history. And of course he shared some of his fond memories with the Chicago Bulls. But before the legend left us he talked about how important work ethic is for the younger generation of basketball players.
NBA veteran point guard Terry Porter tells us how he made it to the NBA. Who pushed him to be great. He also shared with on how he had to be patience. He was not heavily recruited coming out of high school as a matter fact he attended an NAIA school in Wisconsin. Terry is the true definition of hard work can take you places in life. Chase father Tony Adams talked about how Chase loved the game, and how he just wanted to be the best basketball player he could possibly be, from middle school all the way until college. Tim tells us who he watched as a teenager and saw all the dribble moves that Dwayne Pearl Washington was doing so he started doing some of the moves but adding his own flavor to them the Texas 2 step he mastered. He also mentioned on how he was over looked by some of the local and state universities. But it never stop him from living out his dreams to be successful.
Sonny has been giving hope to Chicago younger generation of basketball players thru his foundation for many years, and that has been apart of Jabari upbringing. Labradford Smith talks about playing against Michael Jordan, we talked about the NCAA tournament the sweet 16 run in 1989, and playing against the illini basketball team that was loaded with talent. Sean Higgins also joined us and boy was it fun having him on the show. Sean talked about playing against pro's when he was 13 yrs old and pretty much holding his own. He also talked with us about wanting to be the best and how he would do whatever it takes, even if that meant a few prank phone calls to his opponents lol. You will love this one!
Ronnie Lester talked about his first love was playing baseball but eventually found his truly love for basketball and the rest is history. We talked about how hard he had to work in order to be the best, He would watch older players from his high school and neighborhood, He would pick up certain moves and work on them over and over again until he mastered the moves, you see Ronnie was a student of the game. He wanted to be the best but also knew that his fundamentals had to be on point. Ronnie suffered a major injury but he never let that stop him from reaching his goals which was to get his degree and make it to the NBA and he did just that. It was unfortunately he did get hurt his senior year at the University of Iowa. He was drafted 1st round and the number 10th overall selection. After his playing career ended, he became an NBA scout for the Lakers, and he played a big part in the Lakers drafting the great Kobe Bryant.
The former light-heavyweight champ Montell “Ice” Griffin sure had a great career. He tells us how much he loves basketball, Ice is from Chicago and he had his fair share of seeing a lot of great high school basketball.
