Tread Perilously's WandaVision month continues with an episode The Brady Bunch called "The Winner." When Cindy comes home with a trophy for winning a jacks tournament at the park, Bobby laments that he is the only member of the family to lack an award. Talking it over with Mike and Carol, he resolves to win at something. Anything. It soon leads to strife with the other kids as he becomes an increasingly sore loser. But will the Kartoon King offer him the chance to be the right sort of winner? And will Bobby learn the true value of competition without Mike lecturing on the topic? Justin finally watches his first true episode of The Brady Bunch and is amazed to see Mike without a perm. He also determines the series' premise. Jackie Coogan's Disease gets a new awareness advocate. Ann B. Davis is honored, even if she is mistaken for another actor. Gary Cole is celebrated for his contributions to Brady lore. Geography Corner somehow summons 7th Heaven. The pair recast Thomas Magnum for some reason. Robert Reed's feelings about the show are discussed. Carol's hatred of a certain word becomes a centerpiece of the story and Greg gets drafted into a company of notable TV veterans. Also: the "wholesomeness" of The Brady Bunch leads in strange directions.
Dennis is joined via Zoom and telephone by writer to talk about his new book It Seemed Like A Bad Idea At The Time: The Worst TV Shows In History And Other Things I Wrote. The book attempts to answer the question, "How did this project happen?" about such so-bad-it's-delicious shows like The Star Wars Holiday Special, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Paul Lynde Halloween Special as well as the feature films Can't Stop The Music and Ice Pirates. Bruce shares stories about working with Florence Henderson and Robert Reed on The Brady Bunch Variety Hour and reveals the famous socialite who was the Number 2 choice for "Fake Jan" on the show. Bruce, who was adopted as a baby, also shares the story of how, just in the last four years, DNA testing led him to discover a whole new birth family who have become a big part of his life. Other topics include: dealing with the Mormon elders while writing for Donny and Marie, what is was like to work with such 70's TV icons like Bob Hope, Robert Urich, Paul Lynde, Rip Taylor and Sid and Marty Krofft, why he he's happy to host benefits, the secret to his career longevity and the pact that he made to himself early in his career that "no one day should be like the other day."
A banger of a Q&A this week! Featuring topics like: Brady airdates and hiatuses, Robert Reed vs Gene Hackman, eating the food during takes, Chris's experience on a Gregg Araki film, jumping the shark, and more! It's Q&A #60! Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly columnSixty years ago, Texas wine was a curious microdot in the wine world. Two Texas Tech professors piddled around with a few grapevines, originally intending to make grape jelly to supplement their income.“Doc” McPherson, a chemistry professor, and Robert Reed, a horticultural specialist, wondered if the Texas High Plains around Lubbock could diversify regional crops beyond cotton and corn. Texas Tech encouraged them. In 1969, the pair planted a vineyard with more than 140 different grape varieties to see what worked.Texas stereotype: it is too hot and too dry for grape production. Flawed stereotype. Yes, there are hot summer days, but at elevations of 3,300-4,000 feet—that's why it is called the “High Plains”—the diurnal shift, a significant factor in quality wine, could be 40 degrees. There was fast-draining, phylloxera-free soils. A major aquifer to provide irrigation. Relatively cheap land and Texas money to buy it.Jon LebkowskyToday, the Texas High Plains grows some 85% of Texas grapes in a wide range of varieties. The palette available to Texas grape growers is a signature feature. Heat-tolerant Mediterranean and Rhône varieties tempranillo, mourvèdre, viognier lead the way, but there are many more—likely 75. Texans are still figuring it out.California dominates U.S. wine with 85% of the market, followed by Washington State with 5%, New York State with 3.5%, Oregon with 1.5%—closely followed by Texas and Virginia also with 1.5%.From humble beginnings, Texas now has more than 1,000 licensed wineries, 430 full commercial operations. By comparison, Napa has 500 physical wineries. In another comparison, the Texas Hill Country AVA, centered around Fredericksburg, is the second-most visited AVA in the country, trailing only Napa. The Texas wine industry annually contributes more than $20 billion to the state's economy, supports 75,000 jobs.Texas is not going to challenge the West Coast wine behemoths. It does have a solid niche in Texas, where most Texas wine is sold. Wider distribution will come. Right now, Texans can kick back at a charming Fredericksburg tasting room and note the state has come a long way from curious profs planning to sell grape jelly between semesters at Texas Tech.Tasting notes:• William Chris Vineyards Purtell Vineyard Grenache, Texas High Plains 2020: Smooth, easy drinker from a top Texas winemaker and leading Texas wine grape grower. 1974 was a landmark year for film, a convergence of exciting international cinema and the original voices of New Hollywood that still resonates 50 years later. In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. Anyone familiar with actor Marjoe Gortner's background as a child evangelist preacher (and his later milking of said image as depicted in the Oscar-winning 1972 documentary Marjoe) will know he often commanded his congregation to pray. But is there any prayer that could help the Wildcats? Anthony King - husband, father, beer leaguer, hockey player and film writer - is also a huge fan of Marjoe Gortner, and he's here to discuss the former minister's first full length film, Pray for the Wildcats, which debuted on ABC in January of 1974. A murderer's row of television personalities make up the titular squad: Mayberry's own Andy Griffith, Robert Reed of the Brady Bunch and William Shatner fresh off the USS Enterprise are joined by Marjoe on a dirtbike trip to the Baja California desert. Desperate to impress Griffith's sociopathic business exec, the three ad execs bring along plenty of personal baggage on a trip fraught with resentment and failure that ultimately ends in death. It's a terminally square yet truly strange and somewhat obscure TV movie that we're glad Anthony unearthed for us to survey. On May 25th throughout history, pivotal moments have shaped our world. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy set a bold goal to land a man on the moon by the end of the decade, a dream realized in 1969. Muhammad Ali's first-round knockout of Sonny Liston in 1965 became legendary, amid rumors of a phantom punch. The cinematic universe changed forever in 1977 with the premiere of "Star Wars," and the same day marked the end of "The Brady Bunch," sans Robert Reed. In 1986, Hands Across America united millions in a powerful stand against hunger and homelessness.

Joel Thurm's new book SEX, DRUGS and PILOT SEASON: Confessions of a Casting Director (Bear Manor Media) is smart, sardonic, and perhaps best of all: filled with great dish. One of Hollywood's most admired and accomplished casting directors, Thurm worked in a business where people were still deep in the closet. He was the first person in NBC history to take a same-sex partner as his date to company events. When the AIDS crisis hit, Joel made every effort possible to get work-any work- for actors who were ill, so that they could get or keep their health insurance. You might have seen the recent New York Post story where Joel shares his experiences with Rock Hudson and Robert Reed. SEX, DRUGS and PILOT SEASON takes us on the wild ride of his career from working in the theatre with legends Pearl Bailey, Judy Garland, Ethel Merman, David Merrick, and Gloria Swanson to being part of the wise (and sometimes unwise) early career casting decisions involving Jason Bateman, Tom Cruise, Ted Danson, Farrah Fawcett, Don Johnson, Regina King, Madonna, Joaquin and River Phoenix and Susan Sarandon, to name a few. Thurm played a key role in many of the most pivotal casting decisions in TV history (including Cheers, The Cosby Show, Hill Street Blues, and Taxi)-and for three enduringly popular movies: Grease, Airplane!, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In contrast to Hollywood memoirs where the author attempts to lionize himself and get even with the everyone on the planet, Joel is a wonderful storyteller who is honest about his success and failures. Thurm candid about doing his fair share of drugs in his leisure time and acknowledges instances where other powerful Hollywood people did employ a casting couch. If Thurm learned that someone did have a casting couch, he would subsequently have nothing to do with them.

The final episode of The Brady Bunch - Season 5 Episode 22 originally aired March 8, 1974. In the series finale, Bobby is convinced he can get rich by selling Neat & Natural Hair Tonic. He sells Greg a container, which turns Greg's hair bright orange on the eve of his high-school commencement. Robert Reed did not appear in this episode.
Joel Thurm is a well-known casting director, producer, and photo artist by profession. He is known as a casting director for the TV projects such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Grease (1978), Airplane! Big Big episode folks! This is an interview that is one year in the making and the guest is one that I am very excited about. When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s (which was amazing for many reasons) TV was just a different experience then. For one, there was only a few channels, there was no recording shows, there was no fast forwarding through show so you had to be there to watch and before NBC created “Must see TV” there was our own version of must see TV on channel 38 and 56 both UHF stations out of Boston – if you are under 35 and don't know what UHF is, look it up…you needed an actual antenna to watch…anyway, part my after school ritual with my brother and anyone else was around involved watching a Certain Show…it's the story of lovely lady who was bringing up three very lovely girls…that's right that show was "The Brady Bunch" a TV classic and groundbreaking show in many ways…a cultural touchstone for certain. Our guest tonight is Wendy Winans from Bradyworld.com and she is one of the biggest (IF NOT THE BIGGEST) Brady Bunch fan on the planet and she has a cool website to prove it! Wendy and I talk about the origins of Bradyworld.com, her amazing Brady Bunch collection that will be featured on this weeks version of "Collectors Call" on Metv! (go check it out!), we discuss the infamous Tiki Doll necklace (bad luck OR good luck?), we review the mystery of Carols first husband, the sad story of Tiger the dog(s), the amazing list of celebrity guest performers, the genius of Sherwood Schwartz, Fake Jan, MARCIA MARCIA MARCIA, the amazing talent of Barry Williams, the business acumen of Peter Brady, all the kids hooking up with each other, was Bobby a Dead Head?, MARCIA MARCIA MARCIA, a fact that no one knows about the Brady Bunch, the generosity of Robert Reed, the curse of Johnny Bravo, Wendy's favorite episodes, the efficiently powerful impact of Sam the Butcher, the miracle of all Brady child actors avoiding the very common pitfalls of child stardom, which character would she most want to hang out and and of course we tackle the subject of Cousin Oliver among many other hidden secrets and stories about the greatest TV show ever made*! We hope you enjoyed the conversation as much as we did and make sure to check out Wendy's edition of "Collectors Call" on MeTV! #Bradybunch #bradyworld #marciamarciamarcia #tikidoll #samthebutcher #metv #collectorscall #fakejan #cousinoliver #barrywilliams #johnnybravo #tigerthedog #lisawhelchel #UHF #aftershoolspecial #Alice #sherwoodschwartz #1970sTV

Being an ally is more than just recognizing the humanity of our neighbors, it's recognizing that arguments to the contrary make you part of the problem.11:39This caller got to learn about the evils of LGBTQ and poly folks from a religious friend. He also got recommended church instead of actual therapy. We all have a little laugh, but Robert hits the nail on the head when he says, “Make sure you can tell the difference between a doctor and a pastor.”20:25Xeno calls in to make yet another ontological argument for God, and Robert meets his claims with exactly the right reaction: uproarious laughter. Meanwhile, Vi points out the exact reason that Xeno's argument doesn't work using set theory, and Xeno suddenly needs to go… 35:10Uncle Beck wants to shout out just how important it is to have allies that are willing to go to bat. You can find Uncle Beck's channel here: https://www.youtube.com/c/BeNoJustBe 38:26If we need to pick one, should we pick skepticism or critical thinking? This caller thinks that addressing spiritual abuse is an easier pill to swallow if it doesn't include any extra baggage. Our hosts counter that just like leaving any other abusive relationship, recognizing the signs of abuse can prevent those who have suffered abuse from falling into it again in the future.1:00:15Does it really matter if bad reasoning is used to de-radicalize people? Vi shoots back that the problem isn't deradicalization, it's perpetuating bad thinking! If the louder person seems to “win” the debate, it's only a matter of time before listeners are convinced bv a louder person. The better tactic is to place less value on the “debate bro” culture in the first place. For more information about the Federalist Society, check out this article by the Harvard Gazette: https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/stor... 1:16:50Nick has been placed in a church mediation program to determine if he is allowed to communicate with his siblings.
