Until 1900, most political parties in the United States chose their leaders – either in back rooms with a few party elites making decisions or in conventions. The direct primary, in which voters select party nominees for state and federal offices, was one of the most widely adopted political reforms of the early twentieth century Progressive movement. Intuitively, the direct primary sounds democratic. Voters directly select the candidates. They have more of say over who will ultimately represent or govern them. But decades of scholarship suggests that direct primaries might not have changed the outcomes of party nominations. The conventional wisdom is that as the strength of the Progressive movement declined and voters paid attention to other issues. Party leaders were able to reassert control over candidate selection. In Reform and Retrenchment: A Century of Efforts to Fix Primary Elections (Oxford UP, 2024), Dr. Robert G. Boatright insists this narrative is incorrect and misleading for contemporary efforts to reform the primary election system in the U.S. because some of the early concerns about primaries are still with us today. The book presents data from 1928-1970 explaining the type of reforms states implemented and their success or failure. Dr. Boatright argues that the introduction of the indirect primary created more chaos than scholars have previously documented. Political parties, factions, and reform groups manipulated primary election laws to gain advantage, often under the guise of enhancing democracy. How does this history impact contemporary plans for reform of the primary system? Many suggested reforms were tried – and failed – during the 20th century. Boatright concludes that despite the clear flaws in the direct primary system, little can be done to change the primary system. Reformers should instead focus on elections and governance. The end of the podcast features his suggestions. During the podcast, Rob mentions Dr. Jack Santucci's More Parties or No Parties: The Politics of Electoral Reform in America (Oxford 2022). Dr. Robert G. Boatright is Professor of Political Science at Clark University in Worcester, MA and the Director of Research for the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on the effects of campaign and election laws on the behavior of politicians and interest groups with a particular emphasis on primary elections and campaign finance laws. He is the author or editor of 9 books. Heath Brown and I have interviewed Rob previously on New Books in Political Science: Trumping Politics as Usual:Masculinity, Misogyny, and the 2016 Elections (with co-author Valerie Sperling) and The Deregulatory Moment?: A Comparative Perspective on Changing Campaign Finance Laws. Clay and his wife raised three children (two with severe autism and intellectual disabilities). He finds and creates opportunities to experience joy even after the passing of his wife. Let Clay help you find your joy. About Clay Boatright Happiness is a choice, and when faced with decades of extreme challenges, I proved that positive attitudes invigorate life, create options we had not foreseen, and improve the perspectives of others. My late wife and I had three daughters, including identical twins who both have severe autism and intellectual disabilities. Due to a faith-based experience when the twins were young, I had two full time careers for almost twenty years, one to pay the bills and one to fulfill my purpose. I became a nationally recognized volunteer advocate for people with severe disabilities, often contacted by Texas legislators and media for insight on families with disabilities. Six months after becoming empty nesters, my wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and passed away eighteen months later. As a result, I launched Clay 2.0 to pursue a new life with excitement. Get ready to gain powerful revelation as Katrina Boatright brings part 5 of Purpose City Church's "Down with The King" series. In this week's episode, Katrina uses the biblical story of Elijah and the widow to shed light on how God strategically brings things together in our lives to serve a greater purpose. With humor and relatable examples, Katrina explains the meaning of "conjunctions" - those divinely ordained collisions with people, circumstances, and events. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (12/20/2023): 3:05pm- On Tuesday night, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that former President Donald Trump is disqualified from holding office for his participation in the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021—citing his engagement in what they described as an “insurrection.” Consequently, Trump will now be barred from appearing on the state's Republican presidential primary ballot. The primary is scheduled to take place on March 5th, 2024. Jan Wolfe and Mariah Timms of The Wall Street Journal write: “The Colorado ruling disqualifying former President Donald Trump from the ballot puts a novel and highly sensitive set of constitutional questions before the Supreme Court, likely forcing the justices to intervene directly in a presidential election in a way not seen since Bush v. Gore in 2000.” You can read their full article here: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/law/colorado-ruling-knocking-trump-off-ballot-puts-supreme-court-in-hot-seat-de07e8f5?mod=hp_lead_pos2 3:25pm- Speaking with the press following news that the Colorado Supreme Court's decision barring Donald Trump from holding office, President Joe Biden said it is “self-evident” that Trump “supported an insurrection.” 3:30pm- While appearing on CNN with host Abby Phillip, Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williams said that—in response to the Colorado Supreme Court's ruling barring Donald Trump from appearing on the state's ballots—he is prepared to change the state's Republican presidential primary to a caucus system in which voters would be allowed to support Trump. 3:40pm- MSNBC's Rachel Maddow claimed it is the mark of a “healthy democracy” to have “some sort of disqualifying process” for people and political parties seeking to attain public office. 3:50pm- Stefan Becket and Melissa Quinn of CBS News write of the Colorado Supreme Court's 4-3 ruling against Donald Trump: “In their 133-page opinion, the four justices in the majority acknowledged that ‘we travel in uncharted territory, and that this case presents several issues of first impression.'…The three justices who were in the minority—Chief Justice Brian Boatright and Justices Carlos Samour and Maria Berkenkotter—each wrote their own opinions dissenting with the ruling. They each took issue with various portions of the court's opinion, and expressed concerns about what they saw as a lack of due process for denying Trump's access to the primary ballot. In his dissent, Boatright said that the section of Colorado's election code under which the case was brought "was not enacted to decide whether a candidate engaged in insurrection." You can read the full article here: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/colorado-supreme-court-opinions-decision-trump-primary-ballot/ 4:05pm- While appearing on CNN with host Pamela Brown, pollster Frank Luntz said that the Colorado Supreme Court's ruling against Donald Trump ostensibly validates the former president's claim that the deep state is out to get him. Luntz also suggested that this ruling, barring Trump from appearing on Colorado's presidential ballot, all but guarantees Republicans rally around him—ending Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley's presidential campaigns. 4:10pm- In response to the Colorado Supreme Court's decision, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick hypothetically suggested “maybe we should take Biden off the ballot [in Texas] for allowing 8 million people to cross the border.” 4:20pm- While speaking at a campaign rally in Waterloo, Iowa, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said that more needs to be done to stop the flow of migrants across the U.S. Southern border unlawfully. 4:25pm- During an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) said that an estimated 270,000 migrants are crossing the U.S. Southern border illegally every month—which, as he notes, is roughly the size of the population of Pittsburgh, PA. 4:40pm- How much would the McCallister family trip to France in the classic Christmas film Home Alone cost in 2023? Natalie B. Compton of The Washington Post answered that question in her latest article: an estimated $28,000! You can read the full article here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/12/19/home-alone-paris-trip-cost/ 4:50pm- Is California the next state to bar Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump from their presidential ballot? David Zimmerman of National Review writes: “In a letter dated Wednesday, California lieutenant governor Eleni Kounalakis (D) urged California secretary of state Shirley Weber (D) to ‘explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California's 2024 presidential primary ballot,' given the Colorado supreme court's decision.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/california-lieutenant-governor-calls-for-trump-to-be-removed-from-state-ballot/ 5:05pm- Dr. Carol Swain— Political Scientist, Legal Scholar, and Author of “The Adversity of Diversity”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss her latest editorial in The Wall Street Journal, “Claudine Gay and My Scholarship.” Dr. Swain explains that Harvard University President “Claudine Gay has been exposed as a serial plagiarizer,”—including Gay's failure to cite Dr. Swain's own work, “Black Faces, Black Interests.” So, why hasn't Gay been fired for her history of academic dishonesty? Dr. Swain says Harvard decided to “redefine what plagiarism is” in order to protect their president. In this episode 59 of Streets and Scholars with Frank "FG" Thornton and Alex Alonso they discuss: * Why Eric Holder has a parole eligibility date of 2039. Turns out that Holder is eligbile for the Elderly Parole program. The individual is eligible for a parole hearing under the Elderly Parole Program because they are not condemned or sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Depending on the individual's current sentence, their first parole hearing will be scheduled once they have either 1) been incarcerated at least 20 continuous years and at least reached the age of 50, or 2) been incarcerated at least 25 continuous years and at least reached the age of 60. Doesn't mean he will actually be released in 2039. But if he has good behavior, meets alls the requirements, there is a good change he will be released much sooner than expected. * BTB Savage shooter has been identified as Montrel Burley, 40. He was recently arrested just outside San Antonio, where BTB Savage and his girl shot and killed a would be thief, Omar Richardson. The police cleared BTB in that shooting ruling it a self defense, but after he went on VLAD TV, providing details of the shooting and posting photos from the scene of the killing, within hours, he was shot and killed in Houston. Burley, currently being held on $1 million bail, has been linked to the deceased Richardon. * Fetanyl dealer, 25-year-old Joaun Wright was caught with stash of 40 grams of fentanyl in Pringles container. He is also charged with multiplt gun charges. *Grandmother and Police Union executive, Segovia has been charged with dealing fentanyl including 61 shipments of the drug from foreign countries. * XXX tentacion's 3 killers all received LIFE sentences. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is up first on Talkin' Rock. Of course we talk about the 25th anniversary of his landmark album, Trouble Is. We talk about the re-recording of it, whether it produced any new songs and more. He tells me about playing David Gilmore's famous Black Stratocaster covering Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, which is an unreal story. We talk a little about the Pantera shows, John 5, and of course, Dodge muscle cars! Eric Boatright of Shallow side joins me to talk about his band, the currant single and possible plans for next year. He also tells a killer story of a legendary band heaping praise on Shallow Side for covering one of their classic songs. -Meltdown- https://kennywayneshepherd.net/ https://shallowside.net/ https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/
