Matt Barnes is a fighter. From 2003-2010, he signed six one-year contracts with six different teams. In this week's episode, we hone in on Phoenix in 2009, where the Suns were entering a new phase. Mike D'Antoni, the architect of the '7 Seconds or Less' Suns, fled to New York, and Terry Porter took the helm as head coach.Porter was quick to dismiss D'Antoni's run-and-gun offense. "If you look at the history of the game, no team that has played that running style has had much success,” said Porter before the season. Porter's defense-first approach did not go well, and he was fired before the trade deadline. Phoenix finished 46-36 but missed the playoffs in a loaded Western Conference. The overall diference with this team the last few amount of games, particularly since the Mike Conley trade, is the high IQ that is much more on display than before, when a certain other point guard was leading the charge. Kyle Anderson and Mike Conley in a lot of ways are the Sam Mitchell and Terry Porter style players that this team has lacked forever, and now that they're here, this team has a better chance to get somewhere! facebook.com/timberwolvesexplosion @TwolvesEx @wolvesexplosion paladinolive@yahoo.com A Part of The Basketball Podcast Network! @HoopsPodNet https://tinyurl.com/DraftKingsTBPN Call (800) 327-5050 or visit gamblinghelplinema.org (MA), Gambling Problem? Host Andy Patton recaps the Gonzaga Bulldogs' win over the LMU Lions on Thursday night. Gonzaga struggled in the early going, but an excellent game from Chet Holmgren (21 points, nine rebounds) and stellar play from the four guards, who combined for 10 assists and zero turnovers, led this team to a commanding 89-55 victory.Andy also recaps the five things he was watching for in this one, including how Gonzaga will shoot from three (52.2%) and how much we will see of young players like Hunter Sallis (seven points) and Ben Gregg (five points). Then, Patton previews Gonzaga's Saturday opponent, the Portland Pilots, who have already won more games in WCC play (2) than they did in any single season from the Terry Porter era. Shantay Leggans has this team on the right track, but the Zags should secure another easy victory on Saturday.Locked on Zags - Part of the Locked on Podcast Network.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. ABOUT TERRY PORTER Portland basketball icon Terry Porter was named head men's basketball coach at the University of Portland in April of 2016. Porter, a 17-year NBA veteran player and former NBA head coach, is the 21st basketball head coach in Pilot history. Porter was a standout for the Portland Trail Blazers and had his jersey retired by the franchise in 2009. During his 17-year NBA career, Porter averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 assists, 1.2 steals, made two All-Star appearances (1991, 1993), two trips to the NBA Finals (1990, 1992) and scored 15,586 career points. In addition to his playing and coaching accolades, Porter has been one a strong advocate for various community and charitable organizations. He was a long-time team ambassador for the Trail Blazers after his playing career ended and one of the biggest community contributors of any Portland-area celebrity. He is a Boys and Girls Club Hall of Fame member, board member at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, and created the Milwaukee Scholars Fund in 1994, which provides college scholarships to minority students. He and his wife Susie have three children – Brianna, Franklin and Malcolm. THIS TOPIC IN A NUTSHELL [01:30] His career background in NBA[02:40] Privilege to coach his boys in college basketball[04:18] Recognition received by retiring his jersey number[06:51] How to motivate players to be a top-notch level[07:20] Two types of Leadership or Coaching style [09:20] Building the culture and relationship with the players [14:40] Determining what type of player to recruit[16:08] Coaching between amateur and professionals [19:10] Recruitment and evaluation of players [21:14] How to set the right goals, measure & achieve them[23:55] Mentorship and coaching[24:45] Managing outside distractions[26:21] Core values he brought into his coaching style[29:25] Dealing with players who don't perform and are not committed[33:36] Achieving greatness in your chosen career[37:07] Advice to his 25-year-old self[38:16] First Entrepreneurial endeavor[39:20] Formal and Informal training that shaped his journey[40:20] Biggest mistake or disappointment and what he learned from it[43:45] Best way to reach out to Terry KEY QUOTES: [10:50] In professional sports, you've got to be honest and be careful with how you coach them with mistakes and how to handle criticism. Some guys you can yell at them in front of others, some guys you can't. The decisions you make are best for the group, not individual. Everybody's got to understand that their role is valued for the organization and the team. [25:00] On managing outside distractions:You need to have a hard conversation with them and let them know that this will not last forever. You have to be smart on how to manage your big purchases, how you're gonna live, and the importance of taking care of your body. You should enjoy the fruits of your labor, but there's a fine line of understanding how to enjoy and also maintain the condition of your body in order to perform the next day. [33:31] There's a lot of different levels of greatness. Each organization has to determine what greatness is. Improving yourself from the following year is reaching greatness. Next, they discuss a number of players who Porter reminds them of, including Mo Cheeks, Kyle Lowry, and Michael Conley Jr, and how Porter stacks up against his contemporaries in the 1990s (13:59). Finally, they talk through how Porter's stellar advanced metrics impact his HOF case (27:30), before both stating whether or not they believe Porter deserves a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame (30:03).
Sakamichi Brewing is located in Tachikawa, Tokyo. Each episode Daniel and Matthew pick a beer or two from the menu and talk about it a bit. This week's beer was a can of the excellent Terry Porter from Gilgamesh Brewing in Portland, Oregon. This beer was first made in 2016 as a seasonal winter brew and a collaboration between Gilgamesh and the Portland Trail Blazer's legendary point guard Terry Porter, but since then it's become a regular favourite and a great way to raise money for The Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation. Talking basketball was also a great way for Daniel to test the limits of Matthew's knowledge, and an opportunity for us to talk about a charity that we've been supporting here in Japan.
