In this episode of Figure Out Your Life Podcast, I reflect on my 20s and share 10 lessons I learned from it. So much happened in that decade that has impacted my life now--especially how I think and approach life--and I thought it would be helpful to share what I learned from those experiences in my 20s with others. Hopefully, this will help twentysomethings avoid some of the hard lessons I had to learn, or inspire thirtysomethings and older to reflect back and figure out what they learned from their 20s. The term "imposter syndrome" was coined by psychologists Clance and Imes in 1978 to describe the persistent feeling that one’s achievements have come about through some sort of accident, luck, or deception and that at any minute other people might find out you're an “imposter.” People of Color are particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon due to experiences with racial discrimination, racial-gender stereotypes of intellectual inferiority, and underrepresentation in professional spaces. In this episode of Figure Out Your Life podcast, I discuss imposter syndrome and share five tips on how to fight it before it hinders your success. Fear of Missing Out, or FOMO, is a new mental health syndrome plaguing a growing number of people. Those afflicted with FOMO fear that they are missing out on what other people are doing; specifically, they fear that others are having exciting experiences that they’re not. FOMO is especially strong for those who are addicted to social media because they’re constantly aware of what others are doing. In most cases, people with FOMO respond by either overcommitting and failing to fulfill many of their commitments or choosing to avoid agreements and commitments as much as possible. In this episode of Figure Out Your Life Podcast, I discuss the concept of FOMO and the dangers of being afflicted with this mental health condition, and I share 6 ways to overcome Fear of Missing Out. Halloween is here. And, if you are not sure what to wear, I created a special episode to help you celebrate the holiday without being culturally offensive (or straight-up racist). In this bonus episode of Figure Out Your Life podcast, I discuss cultural appropriation and Halloween, and explain why dressing up as “another culture” is racist and an act of privilege that everyone, including people of color, must recognize and consciously avoid perpetuating. Cancel culture is a modern internet phenomenon where a person is ejected from influence or fame due to their problematic tendencies and/or past actions. For example, R. Kelly was instantly canceled after the release of the docuseries Surviving R. Kelly, which documented the lenthy history of sexual abuse allegations against the singer. As a result, he was dropped by his record label, and most importantly, he was arrested on federal charges alleging sex crimes and obstruction of justice. Here the “cancellation” has worked as intended. But, then you have someone like a MAGA hat-wearing Kanye West who infamously said slavery was a choice (and did so with little remorse), he gets “canceled” and then starts performing “gospel music” at his “Sunday Services” and now has the #1 album on iTunes. What happened to him being #canceled? In this episode of Figure Out Your Life podcast, I discuss cancel culture, and explore why it doesn’t really work for everyone and should be canceled. Have you ever been ghosted by a friend or someone you are dating? Or, have you ghosted someone? Chances are the answer is yes---to both questions! In today’s dating culture approximately 50 percent of men and women have been ghosted or have done the ghosting; and whether it be by a friend or someone you are dating, being ghosted sucks and can actually leave psychological bruises and scars. In this episode of Figure Out Your Life podcast, I discuss the phenomenon of ghosting, particularly why people do it and why it hurts so much, and share how to move forward after being ghosted. There are lots of things in my life that I think SHOULD be a certain way---I should have a higher paying job, I should be in a loving romantic relationship, and I should be 50lbs lighter. However, focusing on the “shoulds” has rarely helped me accomplish my life goals. More times than not it has led to toxic self-talk, a distorted self-image, and debilitating depression. In this episode of Figure Out Your Life podcast, I discuss “shouldology,” which (if it were a real behavioral science) would be the study of a desirable or expected state, and share tips for moving past your “shoulds” towards embracing your reality and accomplishing your goals.
