In this episode, Kim talks to Dr. Carmen Joy Imes about the women of Exodus. Dr. Imes brings her deep knowledge of Exodus to the average Christian audience, explaining how the structure and literary parallels of Exodus to show how the women are the rescuers of Moses, who then rescues the Hebrews. She provides the details of the midwives' spiritual work of saving lives. She demonstrates how Pharaoh's daughter displayed God's character as she sees Moses' misery, heard his cry, and took pity on him. She explains the Hebrew that illustrates how Miriam took a stand at the river to address Pharaoh's daughter just as Moses later took a stand to address Pharaoh. And she explains how Zipporah literally saved Moses' life as he decided which people group he belonged. Amidst these detailed portrayals of the Exodus women, Dr. Imes also points out the narrator's use of humor to depict the bumbling and nameless Pharaoh.    00:00 Introduction to Mutuality Matters  00:02 Exploring the Role of Zipporah in Exodus  01:04 Meet Dr. Carmen Joy IMEs  02:06 The Mystery of Exodus 4:24-25  03:26 Theological and Structural Significance of Zipporah  14:33 The Role of Women in the Early Chapters of Exodus  21:49 Elevating Women in Scripture  22:00 A Word from CBE  22:37 The Women of Exodus: Zipporah, Pua, and Shiphrah  22:52 The Story of Moses' Birth and the Women Who Saved Him  32:07 Moses' Identity and His Encounter with God  39:37 Closing Thoughts and Resources  41:20 Final Remarks and How to Stay Connected       Guest Bio   Dr. Carmen Joy Imes is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in Southern California.

Was tun?

Broadcasts – Christian Working Woman

Presented by Lauren Stibgen I think most of us have had moments of self-doubt. That moment when you deeply question a decision or words you used in a meeting or in discussion with a friend. Maybe you are left feeling like an imposter. Imposter syndrome is a term that first emerged in the 1970s. Although I noted that both men and women can experience feelings associated with imposter syndrome, the research was rooted in a study of how family patterns contribute to these feelings in women. The researchers, Clance and Imes, found these patterns were born of sibling comparison, and on the opposite end of these women were parents who overly praised accomplishments and supported perfectionist behaviors. Essentially, self-worth is equal to achievement. It didn't really matter if the self-doubt was caused by comparison or by over attribution of self-worth with achievement. Both instances had the same impact. There are also some innate personality traits that lend to imposter syndrome. These include low self-efficacy: a low sense of your own ability of success, perfectionism: overthinking of a situation or your words, neuroticism: which is linked to higher anxiety, tension, or guilt, and social anxiety: feeling like you don't belong in a social setting. Feelings of imposter syndrome represent a gap between your own self-perception and the way others perceive you. For example, if someone praises you, you may not believe what they say or feel you have truly earned the merit or the promotion. Playing these feelings on repeat can lead to a pattern of overwork where you feel like you need to become worthy of the role you have, make up for where you feel lacking in intelligence or even hiding from others where you feel most vulnerable. I would argue these feelings of self-doubt have escalated tremendously with the emergence of social platforms which are used to showcase our personal to professional lives. We live in a world of over curation—thinking about how your comments or pictures “fit” into whatever social or professional landscape you may be traversing in. LinkedIn is no longer the digital resume it used to be. It is a platform for thought leadership where algorithms are fed with impressions, likes, and comments! Ted Talks, new book announcements, a conference, a new position, a promotion. Everything is heralded about our professional lives. What about when this imposter syndrome creeps into our faith? Do you show up to Sunday service feeling different than everyone? Maybe you aren't worshiping like everyone else, or you find it hard to understand the message? You feel like you are on the outside looking in? Or perhaps it is the opposite. You serve on many teams at church. You are part of a women's small group and a couple's group. You lead student ministry—overdoing it to overcome a feeling that you don't quite have it all together in your Christian faith… One Google search of imposter syndrome will bring up many articles from top business magazines. In fact, Harvard Business Review published an entire issue of their magazine entitled, “How to Overcome Imposture Syndrome” in May of 2023. There are countless books that offer “letting go” or a “cure” for this group of feelings closely affiliated with work. All of this sounds very exhausting! What I love about God's Word is that I can always find someone whom God has used for the glory of his kingdom that embodies whatever I see in the world today. This includes imposter syndrome. The innate personality trait of low self-efficacy or the low sense of one's own ability for success can be seen in the Old Testament story of Moses. In Exodus 2, we learn God has heard the cries of the Israelites in Egypt. God calls to Moses in Exodus 3:4 by name. What happens next is nothing short of something that resonates deeply with me. Moses is called by God to do something and spends a lot of time telling God how he isn't the man for the job. Exodus 3:10-11, Come,

Imposter syndrome is a myth. Well, mostly anyway. We'll unpack this concept of imposter syndrome, or rather, imposter phenomenon, emphasizing that the common perception of it as a 'syndrome' is misleading. In this first part of our two-part series, you'll get a historical overview of this phenomenon, which starts with the work of Dr. Pauline Clance and Dr. Suzanne Imes' research in the 1970s. Most importantly, we'll bust some myths around the "who" and "why" of this phenomenon, hitting on the facts that imposter feelings are universal and not solely linked to self-esteem or specific demographics. The takeaway is this: if we want to address our imposter feelings, we need to look at them more holistically and consider evidence-based strategies to reduce them. Those practical steps will be explored in part 2 of this series.  Joy Lab and Natural Mental Health are community-supported. When you buy through the links below, we may earn a commission. God replied to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.' God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors-the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob-has sent me to you.” - Exodus 3:13-15Genesis introduced us to the world and to ourselves. Exodus, the second book of the Old Testament of the Bible, does more to introduce us to God – to he who was, and is, and is to come. To a God so eternal that he identifies himself as I AM, but also a God so personal that he also chooses to identify himself in relation to people – the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Exodus is a book of movement, propelling the true story of God and his people forward in such a way that sets forth not just the rest of the Biblical narrative, but human history up to where we are today. It is in Exodus that we see the baby in the basket, the burning bush, the ten plagues, the first Passover, the parting of the Red Sea, the 10 commandments, and so much more. To introduce us to the book of Exodus, host Jason Wieland is joined by Dr. Carmen Joy Imes. Dr. Imes is an Associate Professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, author of the books Being God's Image and Bearing God's Name, and is currently working on a commentary of Exodus. Navigating the Bible is a special podcast series, part of the Doable Discipleship Podcast. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Dr. Carmen Imes joins Kaitlyn to answer the question “Why did God choose the Israelites as his special people out of everyone else, and bless them in a certain way he didn't bless others?” Dr. Imes takes us back to the Bible, pointing us to the reason God gives for choosing Israel and blessing them: so that they can be a blessing to all of creation. Dr. Imes teaches us a fancy new Hebrew word, gives us lots of biblical examples of what it means to bless the nations, and even touches on one of Kaitlyn's favorite phrases, “a city on a hill.” Sponsor - Purity Wood - Go to https://www.puritywoods.com/CURIOUSLY or enter code CURIOUSLY at checkout for an additional 10% off your first order

They highlight her agency and affirmation of God's actions while acknowledging the cultural context of women's drumming and dancing in ancient times. They also offer a nuanced understanding of Miriam's leadership and moral responsibility in the Hebrew Bible. Key Takeaways: Miriam was a drummer, not a tambourine player, as often depicted in art.Miriam played a crucial prophetic role, leading the Israelites in worship after crossing the Red Sea.There are parallel rescue stories in Exodus - Moses' rescue as a baby and the Israelites' rescue from Egypt - with Miriam playing a vital role in both.Miriam is recognized alongside Moses and Aaron as a leader of Israel during the Exodus, as mentioned in Micah 6:4.God treats Miriam as a moral agent with responsibility, as seen in her punishment for challenging Moses' authority.Studying lesser-known biblical figures like Miriam can provide deeper insights into Scripture and Israel's history. Episode Resources: Exodus (Westminster Bible Companion) by Dr. J. Welcome to The Peds NP Acute Care Faculty series! This collaborative series was created and peer-reviewed by national experts and leaders in acute care PNP education to meet the needs of our current and future colleagues. In the push for competency-based education where faculty verify the skills of what a student can do, rather than their knowledge, our series focuses on the application of didactic content with a conversational approach so that you can learn nuances of clinical skills before you reach the bedside.  This episode welcomes the acute care PNP student to clinical, where you'll learn important bedside lessons that apply your knowledge to practical situations. Our faculty offered advice on preparation, clinical rotation best practices, and how to finish the rotation successfully. There are key pearls and pitfalls to guide the student toward gaining competency in their newfound skills. We acknowledge those pesky doubts that cause imposter syndrome, and encourage the role of the learner. Through it all, your clinical is what you make of it, and you can be confident that you have the skills to competently enter a new role. In this conversation, Dr. Carmen Imes joins Dr. Lynn Cohick to discuss their involvement in creating a study Bible for women, addressing problematic passages, and answering objections to the Bible and Christianity. They explore the misconceptions surrounding the Proverbs 31 woman and the purity laws in Leviticus, providing insights into the cultural and historical context. They emphasize the importance of including women's voices and perspectives in teaching and preaching and the need for resources like the Every Woman's Bible to address women's questions and concerns. In this part of the conversation, Carmen Imes and Lynn discuss the concept of impurity in the Old Testament and how it relates to the bleeding woman in the New Testament. They also talk about the Every Woman's Bible and its accompanying app, Filament, which provides additional resources for studying the Bible.Key Takeaways: Creating study Bibles specifically for women allows for exploring passages that are problematic or misunderstood from a female perspective. The Proverbs 31 woman should not be seen as a checklist for women to aspire to but as a personification of wisdom in various domestic spheres. The purity laws in Leviticus were not meant to be oppressive or judgmental towards women but rather had to do with their role in childbirth and the potential for life.Including women's voices and perspectives in teaching and preaching is important for addressing women's questions and concerns.Jesus' ministry challenged and transcended the purity laws, offering a new understanding of purity and healing. The Old Testament addresses issues of impurity beyond menstruation, including long-term discharges and abnormal discharges in both men and women. The Every Woman's Bible is a study Bible that focuses on women's issues and questions. That's why I'm excited to be talking with Dr. Imes today about her new book, Being God's Image.  What is the doctrine of the Image of God and what prompted you to write this book now? Early in the book, you make the distinction between being created IN God's image and being created AS God's image. Could you share a little more about that distinction?  What are some areas where the Imago Dei finds a lot of resonance in today's culture, and what are some areas where it's a powerful corrective?  What's the relationship between the Imago Dei and the gospel?  How can youth workers teach and talk faithfully about the Imago Dei and human dignity in the midst of the effects of sin and the fall?  Do you have any practical recommendations for youth workers who want to teach about the Image of God?  Recommendations: Dr. Imes' book: Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters Christa McKirland: God's Provision, Humanity's Need: The Gift of Our Dependence Every Woman's Study Bible (NLT)  Marc Cortez: Resourcing Theological Anthropology: A Constructive Account of Humanity in the Light of Christ Follow Dr. Imes' Youtube Channel for Torah Tuesday videos Join YPT's Facebook group: @youththeologian (make sure you answer the membership questions) Follow YPT on Twitter: @youththeologian Follow YPT on Instagram: @youththeologian YPT's ebook, Youth Ministry is Theological Ministry, is a free download for subscribers. A viewer asks:

“In Genesis 1:27, when it says we were "made in the image of God", What does it mean exactly? I hear people all the time say that it means we were made with the characteristics of God, but I grew and still believe It means we were made in the triune nature of God. We are body, soul, and spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 refers to this when it says "May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”.” ——— Here's how you can submit your own questions to DiscipleDojo: https://youtu.be/_bEUVpTSWLs More from Carmen Imes:

What if every human being is the image of God? What would that change about how we view ourselves and others?   In the episode, Carmen Joy Imes, author of Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters, helps us unpack this critical question.     Carmen Joy Imes is an associate professor of Old Testament at Biola University. A graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, she is the author of Bearing YHWH's Name at Sinai, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters, and the editor of Praying the Psalms with Augustine and Friends.   Some highlights from our conversation: Carmen shares the distinction between being God's image and bearing God's image – and why she thinks it's critical we understand that we don't just bear the image of God, but we are the image of God. We discuss the creation story found in Genesis 1 and how God creates and fills. She helps us see God's pattern of creation. Carmen shares how the Lord led her in her time meditation on Genesis 1. I love that Carmen has pretty much written an entire book on the creation account, yet God still had something new for her in this passage. We discuss how, when you read the creation account closely, God didn't create a hierarchy between male and female. Carmen shares the implication for why being God's image is so important – and how that gives every human inherent dignity and worth. Carmen and I talk about why the creation accounts in Genesis 1 and 2 are different. Carmen shares her research on what it means for a woman in Genesis 2:18 to be called a “suitable helper” or an “ezer.” Carmen has profound insight into why she believes a woman was the first to see Jesus after his resurrection. Don't miss this. It's so good. Does creation care and stewarding matter today? Carmen believes so. Listen as she unpacks why our earthly home and bodies still matter. Finally, Carmen encourages us to base our identity in Genesis 1 and 2, as people created by God and in his image, versus Genesis 3, as people marked by the fall and in need of grace. Both are true, but where we start matters.   GREAT NEWS! A Texas megachurch is facing criticism after a viral TikTok video showed a rehearsal of its Christmas production with drummers flying over the crowd on wires. The church says it's simply offering its best to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Critics say it's an extravagant violation of Jesus' humble spirit. Who's right? New data says Americans are far more isolated and lonely than ever before, and it's not because of Covid. Is the church the solution or part of the problem? And a researcher offers three surprising explanations for why the decline of religion in the U.S. didn't start until the 1990s. Then, Old Testament scholar Carmen Imes answers questions about the book of Exodus. Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart? What does it really mean to take God's name in vain? And how do all of the details about the tabernacle apply to Christians today? Could the secret to who we are lay hidden in the ancient past? Dr. Carmen Imes, associate professor of Old Testament Studies at Biola University, says "yes"! Specifically, Carmen directs us back to the events that took place at Mount Sinai, when the nation of Israel truly met their God. In this fascinating interview, Frank discusses issues with Carmen such as: How do the events of Mount Sinai point us to understanding our true identity today?, have we completely misunderstood the commandment 'Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain'?, and what does it mean to bear God's image vs. to bear God's name? Carmen discusses all of this and more in her recent book, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters. Carmen also reveals insights from her soon-to-be-released book, Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters (coming June 2023). She unpacks how acknowledging who we are as God's image bearers directs how we understand our purpose, identity, and significance. Plus, Frank sits down with Phoenix Hayes, the Creative Director at CrossExamined, to discuss some of the philosophical and moral implications that follow when we divorce our identity and personhood from our biology. Did Israel pass or fail God's test at Mount Sinai? And what did Yahweh mean when he made Israel a “nation of priests”? In this episode, Tim and Jon talk with long-time friend and Hebrew Bible scholar Dr. Carmen Imes. Tim and Carmen share differing interpretive perspectives of the Exodus story, reminding us that the Bible is meant to be meditated upon and studied within a community.View full show notes from this episode →Timestamps Part one (00:00-18:45)Part two (18:45-30:30)Part three (30:30-40:45)Part four (40:45-1:01:20)Referenced ResourcesBearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters, Carmen Joy ImesBaker Commentary on the Old TestamentTo Climb or Not To Climb?
