On this episode of Burnt Toast we're featuring an episode of one of our other podcasts, Play Me a Recipe, in which podcast producer, Harry Sultan, invites you into his kitchen - albeit, originally for another podcast - while he cooks through Jenny Rosentrach's and Andy Ward's Pork Shoulder Ragu, and you'll be right alongside him, every step of the way.If you're cooking along, here's the recipe we're making today. Go ahead and grab the ingredients below before starting the episode.RecipeServes 62 pounds to 2 1/2 pound boneless pork shoulder roast (up to 2 1/2 pounds), tied with twine if there are any loose pieces1 small onion, chopped1 garlic clove, mincedSalt and pepper2 tablespoons olive oil1 small pat butter1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes, with juice1 cup red wine5 sprigs fresh thyme5 sprigs fresh oregano1 Small handful of fennel seeds1 tablespoon hot sauce, for smokiness (Andy used Trader Joe's Hot Chili Sauce, but Sriracha and Tabasco both work great, too)1 pound Pappardelle1 handful Freshly grated ParmesanPreheat oven to 325° F. Liberally salt and pepper the pork roast. Add olive oil and butter to large Dutch oven and heat over medium-high until butter melts, but does not burn. Add pork roast to pan and brown on all sides, about 8 to 10 minutes in all.Add the onion and garlic and saute for 1 minute. Add tomatoes, wine, thyme, oregano, fennel, and hot sauce and bring to a boil. Cover, and put in oven.Braise for 3 to 4 hours, turning every hour or so. Add more liquid (water, wine, or tomato sauce) if needed. (The liquid should come to about 1/3 of the way up the pork.) Meat is done when it's practically falling apart. Put on a cutting board (remove the sprigs of herbs at the same time) and pull it apart with two forks, then add back to pot and stir.Cook 1 to 2 pounds pasta according to package directions. When it's is ready, put into individual bowls and top with ragu and lots of Parm. Alternately, toss the pasta with the ragu and a bit of pasta cooking water, as needed, and top with Parm.Is there a recipe you'd like to hear us make? History of National Poetry Writing Month National Poetry Writing Month (also known as NaPoWriMo) is a creative writing project held annually in April in which participants attempt to write a poem each day for one month. NaPoWriMo coincides with the National Poetry Month in the United States of America and Canada. NaPoWriMo, or National Poetry Writing Month, is an annual project in which participating poets attempt to write a poem a day for the month of April. This website is owned and operated by Maureen Thorson, a poet living in Washington, DC. Inspired by NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month), she started writing a poem a day for the month of April back in 2003, posting the poems on her blog. When other people started writing poems for April, and posting them on their own blogs, Maureen linked to them. After a few years, so many people were doing NaPoWriMo that Maureen decided to launch an independent website for the project. My History with National Poetry Writing Month I started writing poetry in 1988 after I had been exposed to T.S. Elliot in my honors English class in high school. In 1992 I started reading my poetry publicly at Espesso Europia Coffee Shop in Abilene Tx while I was in the United States Air Force. This continued for many years when I ran my own poetry reading at Cannova's in Loves Park Illinois and attended the poetry slams at The green Mill in Chicago Illinois. While living in Rockford Illinois I published my first book of poetry Throwing Yourself at the Ground and Missing in 2007 followed by Postcards From Someone You Don't Know in 2008 Wisdom From the Sack in 2010 and Shaving Crop Circles In My Chest Hair in 2017. You can get copies of all of these books in my merch section. In 2009 I started participating in National Poetry Writing Month which became the basis for my book Wisdom From the Sack and Shaving Crop Circles in My Chest Hair. In 2020 I started publishing my podcast version of the challenge and those can be viewed here for 2020 and here for 2021. April 29th Poetry Prompt And here's our prompt (optional, as always). In certain versions of the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty, various fairies or witches are invited to a princess's christening, and bring her gifts. One fairy/witch, however, is not invited, and in revenge for the insult, lays a curse on the princess. Today, I'd like to challenge you to write a poem in which you muse on the gifts you received at birth — whether they are actual presents, like a teddy bear, or talents – like a good singing voice – or circumstances – like a kind older brother, as well as a “curse” you've lived with (your grandmother's insistence on giving you a new and completely creepy porcelain doll for every birthday, a bad singing voice, etc.). I hope you find this to be an inspiring avenue for poetic and self-exploration. April 29th Poem He Must be Born with It  29 April 2022  As I stand in the back of the room  Fiending for another smoke  I feel every emotion coming from the poets  Some of them are younger than my socks  Others share their experiences that I have no reference to  Yet I come back week after week  Like they say to do in the meetings  Where we just share our first names  I've always been able to empathize with most anyone  So much so I take on their struggle  Without being asked  Or wanted  Because I've felt since day 1  That I have to be the sacrificial lamb  Fending for myself  With parents who would rather drink  Than take care of their children  I stand outside, alone  Flicking ashes to the ground  Field stripping the butts  And the young poets come up to me  Asking how they did  Asking if I heard their latest piece  Quizzing me on their content  Giving them the wisdom that has been bestowed on me  Through years of searching  And I pass along to them the torch  Freshly lit with their energy and inquisitiveness  Praying they have a better life than what I was given  Knowing the predators that lurk just around the corner  I try to protect them and provide them  With an example of what I have done that works  And what I have done that doesn't  This is all I can give the next generations  The benefit of my experience  It's a precious gift that I wish I had been given  Or that I would have been open enough to receive  My spirit will be following up after I release these earthly bonds  I expect to see  A better world than what was left to me  Reaching Out To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. If you would like to be on the show or have me discuss a topic that is giving you trouble write in and let's start that conversation. What's happening? What's wrong with you? Do you realize what you're saying? Do you know who you're talking to? Snap out of it! Pull yourself together! Can you hear me? Welcome back to the podcast! For our second pocket episode for the very cohesive and not stupid in any way themed month of Ape-ril, we're going to be talking about Ape Escape. This is a Playstation 1 title that necessitates the use of the Dual-Shock analog controller. Which in the grand scheme of things doesn't necessarily sound all that important of a detail to focus on, but playing the game it becomes very clear that its purpose was really to showcase all of things that were possible by having multiple analog sticks (as well as the L3/R3 button concept), and does so in a really unique way. The control scheme of this game is actually really clever, with the face buttons used to switch between multiple gadgets that can be mapped by the player and all use the right stick to function, as well as having jump mapped to the R1 button to keep the stick always available to be used. It was certainly novel at the time, and since we live in a world now where every modern controller has multiple analog sticks, it's clear that the Dual Shock has had an impact with Ape Escape having at least a small part in introducing this concept to players. On top of that, the game is just solidly designed, having a lot of mechanical complexity and player abilities, but with a simple concept and mostly very tightly designed levels. This overall simplicity meant that the player can focus on using platforming, stealth, climbing and all of the different gadgets without sacrificing the flow of the level. We're going to be talking about the successes and failures of the novel control scheme, the legacy of the game and why it's worth playing, and our desire to see someone in a big foam Spike mascot costume. Thank you for joining us this week! This game wasn't an unknown quantity for us coming in, but we were still surprised by just how well this game held up, particularly in the face of some of the older games we've played recently. It really is an interesting title with a lot of good ideas that really haven't been iterated on much outside of its own series. Did this game introduce you to twin stick controllers? Did you have an equally smooth time playing this one in the modern era? Let us know down in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time we're leaving Ape-ril and entering into Mystery May (and then hopefully taking a fairly long break from themes) and we're going to be talking about Gemini Rue, so we hope you'll join us for that!

In this week’s episode of The Breakout Growth Podcast Sean Ellis and Ethan Garr chat with Mayur Gupta, Gannett’s Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer. Very few industries have been as dramatically impacted by digital disruption as the newspaper industry, so we wanted to learn from Mayur how he approaches and looks to drive growth in a world of constant change. Gannett owns USA Today and more than 1000 other daily and weekly publications. As the world has shifted from print to digital consumption of media, the company has had to evolve from its legacy media roots into a content subscription business. Mayur describes Gannett today as “The Netflix of non-fiction content” and that has meant a new approach to marketing and growth. What has not changed is Mayur’s underlying beliefs about what drives sustainable growth. Mayur describes growth as foundational, and not just a tactic or a hack. And he goes on to explain that sustainable growth is a mindset and culture where you work to create flywheels that grow the brand, grow the user base, and grow user value. So when the world is changing around you, as is now the norm in the newspaper business, there is still firm ground from which to view and seize opportunities. This is our second conversation with Mayur, who joined The Breakout Growth Podcast a few years ago when he was at Freshly. He also previously led growth at Spotify. So as we look to learn more about how to lead and navigate growth in a rapidly changing environment Mayur’s perspective is both unique and powerful. Let’s jump in with Mayur Gupta, and don’t forget to subscribe to `the Breakout Growth Podcast YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-K_CY4-IrZ_auEIs0j97zA We discussed: * Joining Gannett, “The Netflix of non-fiction content” (06:44) * The formula for sustainable growth: grow the brand, grow the user base, grow user value (10:23) * Seizing digital growth while respecting a loyal but ebbing print market (17:29) * North Star Priorities, OKRs, and Cross-functional pods (35:00) * Managing through data blind spots (26:00) * Establishing ourselves as a “trusted destination” (54:23) * Growth is a foundation and an outcome (56:00)

Freshly resupplied with Laphraoig and Glen Livet, Lucretia assumes hosting duties this week to examine—and cross-examine—Steve about his new biography M. Stanton Evans: Conservative Wit, Apostle of Freedom, which comes out officially on Monday. Lucretia walks Steve through how he came to know Evans (41 years ago now!), and why he think Evans is “the perfect conservative,” both in theoretical and practical terms. In addition to his legacy as a tutor for a generation of young journalists and writers whose ranks include Ann Coulter, Greg Gutfeld, John Fund (and Steve!), Evans was instrumental in several key turning points in the conservative movement in the 1960s and 1970s (such as providing desperate life support to Reagan’s faltering campaign in 1976), as well as writing The Sharon Statement, the founding document of Young Americans for Freedom. As a thinker, Evans was early on to the problem we today call the “administrative state,” as well as critiquing in counter-intuitive ways the flabby anti-Communism of establishment liberalism. His mode of inquiry is very useful to circumstances today. Worth listening all the way to the very end, where we have included a short clip of Stan telling “con law jokes” (no kidding), set to the backdrop of his favorite Elvis tune, “Suspicious Minds.”
