We continue our season focusing on belonging by talking about places and spaces. What kinds of stories do you tell about the places of your past that made you who you are? How do you tell that story when that place has been destroyed by the effects of climate change?  dream hampton is an independent filmmaker who recently released a nine-minute short film called Freshwater. Prior to this project, hampton had worked on three long-form projects, including the widely recognized Surviving R. Kelly docuseries. Dealing with studios and facing creative limitations took a toll on dream, prompting a search for a creative project that could heal. In collaboration with her friend Invincible, dream embarked on a film project exploring flooded basements as a metaphor for memory, the effects of climate change, and the changing demographics of her hometown, Detroit. Freshwater was shot over all four seasons with a small crew of three or four people.  My conversation with dream includes thoughts around migration and climate refugees. Why aren't we doing a better job of responding to those who have left homes that have been made uninhabitable due to climate catastrophe? We also talk about ways that urban planning and surveillance have contributed to why our places are so poorly equipped to withstand the many challenges we're facing, whether it's fire or too much water. Through her story of loss, dream invites us all to reflect with her on how we might respond to this moment when, as she so aptly puts it, nature is talking to us. As storytellers, are we listening? Our next guest has scored everything from comic book adaptations to award-winning documentaries. He is a Filipino-American composer who has scored some of the most exciting projects of the last few years. His dark synth and guitar-driven work was heard on the Russo Brothers' adaptation of the acclaimed comic 'Deadly Class'. And his emotional and poignant music was featured in the powerful Peabody Award-winning docu-series 'Surviving R. Kelly'. For the latter, he also took home an ASCAP 2020 Screen Award.Born to Filipinx immigrants, his family taught him music at a young age. His curiosity would lead him to play in bands and to study film scoring at USC's prestigious Scoring For Motion Pictures and Television program. He would go on to be mentored by and collaborate with Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Goransson (Black Panther) and Theodore Shapiro (Bombshell). My special guest is author Lizzette Martinez who's here to discuss the years of sexual abuse and trauma she suffered at the hands of popular Grammy-winning music artist R. Kelly. KELLY at Aventura Mall in Florida where he was performing. At first, it seemed that her hopes of becoming a professional singer were about to come true when he offered to help boost her career. However, this mentorship quickly turned into sexual grooming, leading to years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. After struggling to free herself of the relationship and rebuild on her own, Lizzette's successful new life, far away from the entertainment industry, was interrupted in 2017 by allegations against R. Kelly by other women. This led her to coming forward to the authorities with her own history of abuse by the music icon. In January 2019, she participated with other survivors in a documentary series with Lifetime called “Surviving R. Kelly.” It should have been a healing experience but instead left them feeling abandoned and fearful for their lives. In August 2021, Kelly went on trial in New York on racketeering and sex trafficking charges and was found guilty of all charges. My special guest is author Lizzette Martinez who's here to discuss the years of sexual abuse and trauma she suffered at the hands of popular Grammy-winning music artist R. KELLY at Aventura Mall in Florida where he was performing. At first, it seemed that her hopes of becoming a professional singer were about to come true when he offered to help boost her career. However, this mentorship quickly turned into sexual grooming, leading to years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.   After struggling to free herself of the relationship and rebuild on her own, Lizzette's successful new life, far away from the entertainment industry, was interrupted in 2017 by allegations against R. Kelly by other women. This led her to coming forward to the authorities with her own history of abuse by the music icon.   In January 2019, she participated with other survivors in a documentary series with Lifetime called “Surviving R.
