Raw, reactive conversations about movies. As you’ll soon find out, this is really just an excuse for a couple of old friends to hang out and catch up about movies that we find fun or interesting.
Timothy Anderson and William Fenyes
It's no small thing, dressing in a weird costume and gaining the power of the mighty ant. Wait, I guess it is. Anyway, enjoy our return to the marvel universe as we explore Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania! We were pleasantly surprised by a number of things but the biggest surprise had to be a cameo appearance by everyone's favorite... cameo guy. Give it a listen and let us know what you think. Don't forget to share, like, tweet, or just call someone to tell them about us.
Sometimes you hear or see something out of the ordinary that you need to stop whatever you're doing and talk to someone about it. A nun killing it at a poker table, the deleted scene from Free Willy where the whale actually landed on that kid, or you see a grown man sitting in a bar, alone, reading a comic book. Did you hear that? Tim thinks its perfectly normal to go to the local watering hole and whip out a comic. What do you think?
In the snow globe of an Argentinian grandmother, inside a house on a mountain, in a room with a door marked, “No girls allowed,” two podcasters shout obscenities into microphones that are, themselves, snow globes belonging to an Argentinian grandmother. Inside those snow globes, two identical twins, both played by Bill Murray, sit knitting a sweater for the aforementioned Argentinian grandmother. Look, I don't know. It's a Wes Anderson thing. You just kinda roll with it and enjoy the feels. This week we're reviewing the 2014 movie, “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” Enjoy! Don't forget to like and share on any social media platform you prefer. It helps the podcast, which currently is only listened to by Argentinian grandmothers.
How long has it been since an original screenplay was written and then put into production? After Knives Out, we'd have to say that it doesn't happen often enough. This movie was a breath of fresh air in a world full of Comic Book movies and sequels. The original character of Benoit Blanc, as played by Daniel Craig, is extremely entertaining. We loved it and we hope that you'll enjoy hearing our review of this movie. Don't forget to like, share, and comment on the podcast, we think it helps.
Today, for your listening pleasure, we have put together a fine selection of criticisms of Mark Mylod's “The Menu.” While awaiting the first course, please enjoy a sampling of our latest intro music. Note the sadness in the tones and imagine what might be wrong with the musician who created it. Next, we'll move into an amuse bouche specifically selected to cater to the most base of humankind, the everyman. We've named the amuse bouche, “Did you like it?” and while you'll receive very little in the way of substance from the discussion, you will feel like you heard something. Finally, our main course begins with a vicious attack on Foodies that ends with a hint of vindication for Billy, who suffered great emotional harm at the hands of a megalomaniac chef. Dessert consists of the podcast hosts saying over and over again that things “go off the rails” until finally outro music starts and you are free to move onto a more meaningful time in your life.
Would you submit yourself to terrible medical experiments if Chris Hemsworth asked you too? That's basically what's happening in this week's movie. Spiderhead is the story of a charismatic scientist, experimenting on prisoners but like, it seems pretty alright. Just how much would Billy and Tim put up with if it meant that Chris Hemsworth would smile at them and call them friends? Don't forget to like, subscribe, and all the other internet things, it really helps us out.
As Samuel L. Jackson says in Jurassic Park, “Hold onto your butts!” This week we review Netflix's Bullet Train, starring Brad Pitt. We marveled at the efficiency of the Japanese mass transit system and were thrilled by the nonstop action. Was it all good though? You'll have to listen to find out. As you listen, don't forget to like, subscribe, and all the other internet things.
Did you ever have that friend that seemed better than you in every way? Everything they touch turns to gold and everything you do is just, ok. The DC movie universe is the friend that just can't seem to live up to the success of their more attractive and successful friend, Marvel. Black Adam is one movie that might make you look twice about the merits of the lesser friend. Join us this week as we watch and enjoy the latest in movies from the DC universe. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and all the other internet things.
Do you want to spend two hours listening to Iron Man call Batman gay? What if this is set in a universe where Batman was actually gay and Iron Man was a petty thief pretending to be an actor, pretending to be a detective? No matter how you answered that question, you'll agree with one of us as we review Kiss Kiss Bang Bang! Don't forget to like, subscribe, and do all the other internet things. Tim worked really hard to produce this and Billy was present while recording.
Considered one of the best Batman movies of all time, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm certainly does warrant another watch. In this episode we discuss some of the things that make the movie such a masterpiece and both of us try to answer the question, “Is it really that good?” We also give a shout out in memory of the voice we hear in our heads whenever Batman is mentioned: Kevin Conroy, who sadly passed this year after battling cancer.
It's been a little while, but we are happy to be back, we're glad that you're here, and we are very excited for the holidays. So much so that we are polishing off season 3 with a Wintertime spectacular. Over the month of December we'll be releasing 4 episodes, starting with Mask of the Phantasm as a tribute to Kevin Conroy next Thursday. We really hope to see you there.
Did you know that Marvel is still putting out Comic Book movies? Of course you did, but we have to tell you we are getting a little burned out on the topic. This week we discuss the new Dr. Strange movie and how we wanted it to be just a little stranger. Also, is it possible that a Dr. Strange movie isn't even about Dr. Strange? Listen this week to hear our thoughts and please leave a review if you are enjoying the podcast, it really helps us out.
The Moon Knight series has wrapped up its first season and it's time for the review. It is fair to say that Billy isn't usually emotional when it comes to reviews but listen this week to hear him lose his freaking mind. Speaking of losing minds, just how crazy is Mark and are we all just in a turtle's dream or something? All this and more on this episode of the Cinema44 Podcast. If you're enjoying the podcast, don't forget to leave a review on whichever podcast app you're using. It really helps us out.
Remember that ridiculous guy from the most recent Suicide Squad movie? That's right, they made an entire series for him. Peacemaker might be one of our favorite guilty pleasure shows and this episode probably the most overwhelmingly positive review we've done. Is that because we set the bar really low or because Peacemaker is really just that great? We'll let you decide. If you're enjoying the podcast, please leave us a review in whatever podcast app you're using. It really helps us out. 0:00 – 2:12: Intro song talk 2:12 – 7:15: John Cena's arms 7:15 – 9:05: Suicide Squad talk 9:05 – 11:43: First thought on the series 11:43 – 16:40: Character talk/ Vigilante! 16:40 – 23:20: Story notes 23:20 – 32:30: The last episode/Some spoilers 32:30 – 38:48: Adebayo's crazy! 38:48 – 39:54: End credits/ Next week
Five years ago, a Moon Knight adaptation was unheard of. Now it's here and it definitely doesn't disappoint. Find out if we identify more with a super fly Steven or a classical Mark. The real question is, “Is Moon Knight just a mummy?” All this and more on this episode of the Cinema44 Podcast! Don't forget to leave a review and share on social media if you're enjoying the content.
It's another superhero movie! Morbius is out and we've seen it. We have a conversation about how the movie is trying to stand out from the MCU while still building an extended universe of its own. For some reason, we can't help but get trapped into a little bit of Spider-Man talk. If you enjoy the episode, please be sure to rate us and leave a written review in your favorite podcast app. We'd really appreciate it. 30 – 2:15: Interview Mishap/Sorry Paul 2:15 – 3:10: Sony, in association with Marvel 3:10 – 4:37: Trailers and Spiderverse! 4:37 – 9:05: Critics hate movies 9:05 – 12:40: The story, fake blood, and Jared Leto 12:40 – 18:40: Villain Talk 18:40 – 20:18: Tim being paranoid about music 20:18 – 26:00: Visual effects and makeup 26:00 – 41:33: Full rating, conspiracy theories, next steps
This week, we discuss the latest in the Spider-Man universe - Spider-Man: No Way Home. We're pretty sure that the only Spider-Man that we don't mention here is Spider-Pig from the Simpsons. We talk Holland (not the country), we talk Garfield (not the cat), and we talk Mcguire (not the baseball player). The most surprising thing about this movie is that we both loved it, so get ready for a fun ride into fandom. Below are timestamps for bite-size enjoyment. 0 - 4:40: Initial Reactions 4:40 - 9:00: Talking about the characters 9:00 - 12:30: The movie makes fun of the Spider-Man and it all lands. 12:30 - 15:15: Let's talk Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 15:15 - 17:00: What Sony should do with Spider-Man 17:00 - 21:45: Villain Talk 21:45 - 28:30: Plot and story discussion 28:30 - 43:00: The fight for Tom Holland Spider-Man's soul. This week we discuss the newest in a long line of Batman movies: “The Batman.” Some critics are calling it the greatest comic book movie ever made. Billy and Tim find plenty of things to criticize and just wonder in general if it's even possible for there to be a “best” comic book movie. Spoilers, if there is a “best,” this isn't it. Join us for a discussion about Ghostbusters: Afterlife. SPOILERS!
It's been a long time coming but we decided to release an episode after all. Sorry about the delay everyone but, you know, we have lives. Anyway, we talk DC Fandome, the new Venom movie, and John Carpenter's They Live. I hope you've brought enough bubblegum for this one…
Put your boots on, grab your shotgun, and come shoot the breeze with us. We didn't really watch anything big so we spent 30 minutes talking about upcoming movies and whether we're excited about it or not. Spoiler alert: Billy isn't excited about anything and Tim loves everything. And… like… Doom Patrol.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings! Find out if Tim is too much of a DC fanboy to enjoy any Marvel movies. Also, they are making a new Matrix movie! We hope you enjoy the episode. And If you do, leave us a review or hit us up on social media @filmjoypodcast.
Join us for a conversation about the Marvel trailers that have been dropping (Shang Chi out tomorrow!), Batman, Joker, and of course, FREE GUY directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, and Taika Waititi.
A SPOILER filled review of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Bright lights, funny jokes, and horrific violence. This film was intense, interesting and well worth the watch. Join the conversation with us on social media @filmjoypodcast
We are taking a subtle shift away from movies to talk about the Amazon Prime original series, Invincible, based on a comic book by Robert Kirkman, and published by image comics. This show is incredible and made for a great conversation.
We are back for season 2 with a conversation about Marvel's Black Widow. Directed by Cate Shortland and starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz. This film gave us a great excuse to get back to the movies and back to the podcast. We hope you enjoy, and keep an eye out for more episodes coming soon.
Written and directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and the mandolorian himself - Pedro Pascal, WW84 made for a really interesting conversation about the movie itself, the DCEU, and what we'd love to see out of this whole universe of movies about some of our favorite characters.
Happy holidays! In order to stay true to the Christmas spirit, Billy and I are hangin' in with John McClain for Die Hard 2, directed this time by Renny Harlin. This movie is also is choc full of action and some great one liners, but takes a slightly different direction in how it’s executed. Anyway, don’t forget to follow us on social media, @filmjoypodcast, or write to us at filmjoypodcast@gmail.com. And if you like this podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review.
Today Billy and I are getting into the Christmas spirit with John McTiernan’s 1988 classic Die Hard starring Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman. This movie is choc full of action and some of the best one liners in the biz.
Happy thanksgiving and Welcome back to the Film Joy Podcast. In this episode, to the best of our ability, we are paying tribute to the legacy of Sean Connery, who just recently past a few weeks ago. To do that we watched and discussed From Russia with Love, directed by Tenence Young in 1963 , starring, of course, Sean Connery as James Bond. This was the second bond film in the series of movies that we all have come to know.
8 movies and 4 episodes later, we are happy to be on the other side. This bonus episode is a short reflection on that time where we talk about how we feel, what our favorite movies were, and what it was like discussing eight movies in the amount of time it usually takes to watch and talk about two. What a great time, hope you enjoy.
We’ve made it all the way to the end of our October spectacular. This time, we are diverting from the classic universal monster movies and taking a look at the 1968 film by George Romero Night of the Living Dead along with the 2004 parody by Edgar Wright - Shaun of the Dead. I really think we ended this deep dive into movies to watch at Halloween time with a bang. Again, these movies were very different, but Billy and I enjoyed both of these movies a ton.
In this episode, we are talking about yet another universal monster movie - Frankenstein. The 1931 classic based on the novel by Mary Shelley along with my favorite Mel Brooks Film, young Frankenstein, made in 1974. And wow, both of these movies are great. One capturing profound tragedy, and the other just being totally silly and a ton of fun to watch as always. Don’t forget to follow us on social media, @filmjoypodcast, or write to us at filmjoypodcast@gmail.com. And if you like this podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review.
In this episode, we’re talking Werewolves. Starting with George Waggner’s The Wolfman from 1941 along with the 1985 Rod Daniel film, Teen Wolf starring Michael J Fox. We had a great time with these movies with a surprisingly positive reaction to the original Wolfman and the sweet familiar embrace of Teen Wolf. Don’t forget to follow us on social media, @filmjoypodcast, or write to us at filmjoypodcast@gmail.com. And if you like our podcast, feel free to subscribe and leave us a review.
This week, we’re talking about the Mummy. The original, made in 1932 starring Boris Karloff and the remake from 1999 starring Brenden Frasier and Rachel Weisz. This episode kicks off our 4 episode run in October. Each episode will be a double feature, a classic paired with its more modern adaptation or parody. Billy and had a blast with this episode and are super excited to watch and talk through more monster movies with you guys this month.
In this episode, Billy and I discuss the 1991 hero flick, The Rocketeer, directed by Joe Johnston. The two of us walked away from this movie feeling very differently, but we both had a lot of fun revisiting and talking through another superhero move from the 90’s. Hope you enjoy!
In this episode, Billy and I discuss the 1996 superhero film The Phantom, directed by Simon Wincer and based on a newspaper comic strip from the 1930’s. This movie provided a healthy amount of contrast to modern superhero movies, especially movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Despite its lack of complexity, intensity, and over-the-top visual effects, we both had a great time watching and discussing something that is so far removed from our current exceptions. Hope you enjoy!
Welcome back to Film Joy for a bonus episode where Billy and I talk about the recent event, DC Fandome. This event took place on Saturday, August 22nd. Since Billy and I both have kids, we weren’t able to participate in this event as much we would have liked. That said, it was a lot of fun and we’re both excited for what DC has on the horizon. It was a opportunity to take a look at some new movie trailers, video games, watch actor/director panels, and overall to just get a feel of what’s ahead for DC entertainment. If you missed it, no worries. A lot of this content can be found on YouTube.
Welcome to the first episode of Film Joy. In this episode, Billy and I discuss Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. What we liked, disliked, and ultimately how we felt about it as the finale to a saga that many of us have been enjoying for over a decade. Although it’s tough to find someone who isn’t familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I still feel compelled to say SPOILERS ahead. This is a raw, reactive conversation. No details were intentionally spared. At the helm of both movies are the Russo Brothers. The director duo that brought us the Winter Soldier and Civil War within the MCU, and also had their hands in bringing us shows like Arrested Development and Community. I hope you enjoy our conversation about Marvel’s Infinity War and Endgame.
